    Notizen: Erasing magneto-optical disks were studied using constant frequency pulses. The magnetic layer was Gd12Tb12Fe76. The linear velocity was 7.2 m/s and writing and rewriting were done at 1.8 MHz. The magnetic field was the same during writing and erasing. If the erasing power is too low, bits are incompletely erased, and if the erasing power is too high, erase pulses nucleate domains. Erasing performance can be improved by high frequencies and low duty cycles. Erasing performance decreases as the magnetic field in the write direction becomes stronger. However, almost the same rewriting C/N as the original C/N can be obtained in a weak magnetic field. We obtained a rewriting C/N of 29 dB, while an original C/N was 31 dB at a magnetic field of +50 Oe.

    Notizen: T←S phosphorescence excitation spectra of benzaldehyde and its aldehyde deuterium derivative in methylcyclohexane at 4.2 K are analyzed in terms of canonical mixture of 105 Born–Oppenheimer vibronic wave functions of the nπ* and ππ* triplet states. Two perturbation terms are employed; one accounting for vibronic interactions, and the other for direct environmental coupling interactions between T1 and T2. A good simulation of the benzaldehyde-h6 T←S spectrum is thus obtained with the zeroth order origin level of T2(ππ*) lying 675 cm−1 above the zeroth order origin of T1(nπ*). The T←S spectrum of benzaldehyde-ld1 is also approximately simulated (the zeroth order ππ* origin is located 625 cm−1 above the zeroth order nπ* origin) but with some disparities from the observed vibronic profile. For comparison, vapor phase T←S spectra are also calculated as a function of the zeroth order energy separation.

    Notizen: Using a heat-pulse modulation technique, phosphorescence spectra of 9-xanthone have been studied in n-pentane at 77 and 2.1 K. The three legitimate phosphorescent levels with different lifetimes are detected at 25 751, 25 766, and 25 774 cm−1 above the zero-vibrational level of the ground state. The origin of these multiple levels is explained in terms of spin–orbit interaction superimposed on environmental electrostatic coupling between T1(ππ*) and T2(nπ*). The two coupling constants obtained are: (for the spin–orbit coupling) ||〈1ξ||Hso||2η〉|| =15.70 cm−1 (ξ=x, η=y or vice versa); (for environmental direct coupling) 〈1ζ||Henv||2ζ〉 =3.14 cm−1 (ζ=x, y, or z). For comparison, the T←S phosphorescence excitation spectrum, measured in the same matrix, are in good agreement with the calculated ones.

    Notizen: Abstract Using chicken brain mRNAs, α and γ enolase precursors were synthesized in the rabbit reticulocyte cell-free translation system. The product proteins showed molecular weights almost identical to those of the mature subunits. The levels of translatable mRNAs for α and γ subunits were determined by the cell-free translation system and immuno-precipitation with specific antisera, during development of chicken brain. The level of α mRNA was high at any developmental stage of the brain. On the other hand, the γ mRNA level was very low at the early embryonic stage, and increased rapidly during development of the brain. These changes were closely correlated with those of the corresponding enzyme activities, indicating that the levels of enolase activities in developing brain were controlled primarily by the level of the translatable α and γ mRNAs.

    Notizen: Desmoglein (Dsg) 1 and Dsg3 are recognized as the autoantigens in pemphigus foliaceus and pemphigus vulgaris. Pemphigus-like syndromes have been reported to occur in individuals after exposure to a variety of drugs, but pemphigus caused by carbamazepine is not common. We found that anti-Dsg1 and anti-Dsg3 antibody titres were increased in three individuals administered carbamazepine. Antibody titres against Dsgs 1 and 3 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Of 42 serum samples (25 patients administered carbamazepine, eight patients administered valproic acid and nine healthy volunteers) tested by ELISA, three patients administered carbamazepine showed positive reactivity against both Dsg1 and Dsg3. The patient with the highest titre against Dsg1 and Dsg3 (the index values of anti-Dsg1 and anti-Dsg3 were 79.3 and 86.4, respectively) was a 23-year-old woman (Case 1). The other two patients with positive reactivity were a 5-year-old boy (Case 2) and a 65-year-old man (Case 3). In addition, indirect immunofluorescence study showed intercellular antibodies to the cell surface of the whole epidermis with a titre of 1 : 64 in Case 1 and 1 : 2 in Cases 2 and 3. However, no skin or mucosal involvement was found in any of these cases. There was no difference in the serum concentrations of carbamazepine between the three positive cases and the 22 negative cases of carbamazepine administration. From these facts, the lack of skin diseases may be explained by relatively low values of anti-Dsg 1 and 3 antibodies in Cases 2 and 3. However, it cannot be excluded that undefined exogenous and/or endogenous factors are involved in an outbreak of pemphigus. Furthermore, these findings might be helpful for preventing susceptible individuals from exposure to the suspect drugs.

    Notizen: Properties of the silicon surface cleaned by the irradiation of the hydrogen electron cyclotron resonance plasma has been studied by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, reflection high-energy electron diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. It was confirmed that the irradiation of the hydrogen plasma eliminated both a native oxide layer and a contaminated carbon layer from the silicon surface. In addition, it was found that the surface has the retardation effect on the air oxidation at room temperature. However, the plasma irradiation caused the minute roughness on the surface and hydrogen penetration into the bulk.

    Notizen: Deep electron-trapping centers present in InAlAs (barrier layers) are found to have significant effects on the optoelectronic properties of InGaAs/InAlAs multiquantum-well structures grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. When the energy depths of these centers are less than the discontinuity of the conduction band for this heterojunction, they come to be ionized to produce two-dimensional electron gas in the quantum well (InGaAs). The excess electrons thus accumulated dissociate the excitons by screening the attractive potential between electrons and holes. Hence, the deep levels in barrier layers must be reduced in order to improve the optoelectronic quality of this class of multiquantum-well structures.
