Notizen: Detection and quantification of Macrophomina phaseolina, causal agent of charcoal/dry root rot disease in many crop plants, was carried out using the ELISA serological technique. Polyclonal antisera raised to water soluble extracts of mycelium, the residual water insoluble mycelial materials or ribosomal proteins were evaluated for specificity and cross-reactivity with 16 common soil fungi by ODD and DAS–ELISA. Soluble and cell wall antisera exhibited strong cross-reactivity with most of the fungal isolates. Ribosomal antibodies were less reactive to common soil fungi except Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. ciceri. Mycelial antigens of M. phaseolina on chickpea roots were detectable with DAS–ELISA at a minimum concentration of 10 ng g−1 at 1 : 100 root : buffer dilution. Quantitative estimation of M. phaseolina on roots was evaluated by ELISA under different temperatures and moisture conditions, and in soil amended with a potential antagonist (Trichoderma harzianum 25-92). A significant reduction in ELISA values was observed in T. harzianum-amended treatments. This method may be useful for detection and rapid screening of M. phaseolina under different environmental conditions.

Notizen: The interactions of aldehydes, methyl ketones, methyl esters, sulfur compounds and alkylpyrazines with low density polyethylene (LDPE) were investigated. LDPE film, suspended on a stainless steel support, was immersed in simulated milk ultrafiltrate containing a flavor compound. After shaking the glass bottles containing the solutions and film samples for 24 hr at room temperature (24 ± 2°C), the flavor compound was extracted from both the LDPE samples and the SMUF, and quantitated using gas chromatography. The sorption was: aldehydes (C7-C10) 11% to 63%, methyl ketones (C7-C10) 1.5% to 43.0%, methyl esters (C7-C9) 6.0% to 42.0%, and sulfur compounds 8.5% to 21%. Insignificant levels of alkylpyrazines were sorbed. For all flavor compound classes, as carbon chain length increased, the quantity of sorbed flavor compounds increased.

Notizen: Abstract The colonization of Macrophomina phaseolina sclerotia by microbial parasites was evaluated in unsterilized field soil at different levels of soil moisture (0,-5, and-10 kPa) and temperature (20, 30, and 40°C). The maximum colonization of sclerotia was recorded in soil held at-5 or-10 kPa at 30–40°C. Trichoderma harzianum isolate 25–92 and Pseudomonas fluorescens isolate 4–92 were recorded as potential sclerotial parasites, and they significantly (P=0.05) reduced the germination of sclerotia by 60–63%. Cells of P. fluorescens and buffer-washed conidia of T. harzianum were completely agglutinated at 28°C with crude agglutinin of M. phaseolina. The ability of different antagonists to parasitize the sclerotia were correlated with the agglutination ability of the antagonists.

Notizen: Abstract Dominant phylloplane fungi of guava (Psidium guajava L.) were screened for their antagonistic activities against the two pathogens,Colletotrichum gloeosporioides andPestalotia psidii, bothin vitro andin vivo. Culture filtrates ofAspergillus niger, Fusarium oxysporum andPenicillium citrinum caused more than 50% growth inhibition ofC. gloeosporioides. Filtrates ofCephalosporium roseo-griseum andF. oxysporum were most effective in reducing the growth ofP. psidii. Volatiles produced from the cultures ofA. niger, F. oxysporum, P. citrinum andP. oxalicum inhibited the growth ofC. gloeosporioides, whereas volatiles fromC. roseo-griseum, F. oxysporum andTrichoderma harzianum inhibited the growth ofP. psidii. The inhibitory effect of volatiles decreased with increase in incubation time. In general, the maximum effect of volatiles was noticed after 48 h incubation. Different grades of colony interactions in dual cultures were recognised between the two pathogens and the phylloplane fungi examined. Maximum inhibition ofC. gloeosporioides was caused byAureobasidium pullulans, Cladosporium cladosporioides, epicoccum purpurascens, F. oxysporum andMyrothecium roridum, whereasAspergillus terreus, C. roseo-griseum andP. oxalicum significantly reduced the growth ofP. psidii. Application of a spore suspension of each test fungus inhibited lesion development of guava leaves caused by the test pathogensin vitro. Inhibition was more pronounced when the spore concentration was increased.A. pullulans, C. cladosporioides, E. purpurascens, F. oxysporum, andT. harzianum were found to be strongly antagonistic toC. gloeosporioides. A. niger, A. terreus, C. roseo-grisem andT. harzianum were strongly antagonistic toP. psidii.

Notizen: Summary Pestalotiopsis funerea Desm. causing leaf spot ofEucalyptus globulus Labill. failed to coloniz strongly staled agar discs of phyllosphere inocula. Antibiotics, besides alteration in pH, and nutrient impoverishment of the staling growth products, may play a major role in the mycostasis phenomenon leading to colonization of staled agar by phyllosphere microfungi.

Notizen: Summary The effect of fungal staling growth products on leaf-inhabiting microfungi, with special reference to a leaf spot pathogenPestalotiopsis funerea Desm. ofEucalyptus globulus Labill. was studied. Results depict that antibiotics produced by competing microfungi caused the phenomenon of mycostasis on the leaf surfaces.

Notizen: Summary Colony interactions betweenRhizoctonia solani Kuhn: a root pathogen ofLycopersicon esculentum Mill and some dominant rhizosphere fungi were assessed in vitro in virgin and staled agar to examine their antagonistic ability and tolerance to antagonism. Notizen: Abstract Seed treatment of Phaseolus mungo Roxb. with non-volatile metabolites of dominant seed fungi such as Chaetomium indicum Corda and Curvularia lunata (Walker) Boedijn and the antibiotic substances: chetomin, curvularin and brefeldin reduced the percent incidence of microfungi and bacteria but induced the Streptomyces sp. The antagonistic behaviour of seed microflora was assessed in vitro.
