Notes: Abstract The colonization of Macrophomina phaseolina sclerotia by microbial parasites was evaluated in unsterilized field soil at different levels of soil moisture (0, –5, and –10 kPa) and temperature (20, 30, and 40°C). The maximum colonization of sclerotia was recorded in soil held at –5 or –10 kPa at 30–40°C. Trichoderma harzianum isolate 25–92 and Pseudomonas fluorescens isolate 4-92 were recorded as potential sclerotial parasites, and they significantly (P=0.05) reduced the germination of sclerotia by 60–63%. Cells of P. fluorescens and buffer-washed conidia of T. harzianum were completely agglutinated at 28°C with crude agglutinin of M. phaseolina. The ability of different antagonists to parasitize the sclerotia were correlated with the agglutination ability of the antagonists.

Notes: The finance literature abounds with theoretical and empirical developments of the original Sharpe/Lintner models of equilibrium in capital asset markets. Almost all of these contributions are premised upon the existence of equilibrium in such models and yet there is apparently no formal existence proof in the literature. The purpose of this paper is to establish such a proof.

Notes: This paper argues that if scarce resources are to be allocated efficiently and to greatest advantage then it is necessary to have explicit monetary measures of the benefits of reduced accident rates so that these benefits can be weighed against costs in the process of determining the appropriate amount to expend on alcohol-related accident prevention programmes. The conceptual issues related to the definition and estimation of monetary values of safety are discussed and the case in favour of basing such values on individual willingness to pay for safety is developed. The paper then summarises existing empirical estimates of wittingness-to-pay based values for the prevention of fatalities and reports the preliminary results of recent work aimed at estimating willingness-to-pay based values for the prevention of non-fatal injuries. The paper concludes by examining the applicability of existing empirical estimates of the value of safety in the alcohol-related accident context and the transferability of estimates derived in developed countries to the developing country context.

Notes: Background  Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is a distinct skin cancer of unknown histogenesis. Data from genome-wide surveys for chromosomal aberrations in EMPD are limited. Objectives  To identify chromosomal aberrations that are present in EMPD.Methods  Fifteen cases of EMPD were analysed by comparative genomic hybridization (CGH). We used pooled DNA CGH, instead of studying a single sample. In addition, immunohistochemistry was performed for detection of androgen receptor (AR).Results  The most recurrent change was amplification at chromosomes Xcent-q21 and 19, and loss at 10q24-qter. In addition, expression of AR, located in chromosome X, was found in six cases. Conclusions  Results suggest that AR may play a role in EMPD tumorigenesis.

Notes: We report four children with linear eruptions on the nose, with overlapping features of lichen striatus and linear cutaneous lupus erythematosus. However, linear lupus erythematosus has rarely been reported, and lichen striatus, although classically linear, rarely affects the face. The linear distribution of lesions from the glabella to the ala nasi may represent distribution following Blaschko’s lines.

Notes: Churg Strauss granuloma (cutaneous extravascular necrotizing granuloma) is a distinct entity which is associated with systemic immunoreactive or autoimmune diseases in a majority of cases. Typically, Churg Strauss granuloma presents as symmetrical papules or nodules on the extremities. There are two histological patterns: the classic pattern reveals palisading granuloma with central degenerated collagen, interspersed polymorphonuclear leukocytes, and leukocytoclastic debris; the focal basophilic necrosis pattern does not show palisading granuloma. We report two cases of Churg Strauss granuloma with different histopathological patterns.

Notes: We have measured the optical transmittance of thin films of gadolinium trihydride GdH3 over a broad spectral range, 0.05–6 eV. The analysis indicates that GdH3 is a wide-gap semiconductor with an energy gap of 2.55 eV. The fundamental absorption and impurity-related transitions dominate the spectra in the high-energy region, 1–6 eV. Hydrogen vibration modes dominate the spectra in the low-energy region, 0.05–0.2 eV. A strong free-carrier absorption effect is observed. In addition, the frequency-dependent refractive index, extinction coefficient, dielectric function, and optical conductivity are determined from the transmission spectra. This work also evaluates the plasma frequency associated with free carriers. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This work investigates the variations of the infrared transmission spectra of yttrium-hydride films YHx during the hydrogen loading process for the frequency range 500–4000 cm−1. The results indicate that the transmittance slightly decreases in the dihydride phase, followed by a significant increase in the trihydride phase. In addition, the carrier concentration decreases, whereas the carrier relaxation time increases with hydrogen content. The hydrogen vibration modes at interstitial sites are completely screened in the dihydride phase. The screening effect decreases as the system goes through the metal–insulator transition. Moreover, the screening effect can be continuously tuned by simply varying the hydrogen content in the yttrium-hydride system. Analysis indicates that the absorption intensity of the vibration mode depends on the carrier concentration. This effect can be used as a diagnostic tool for estimating the carrier concentration and hydrogen content in rare-earth hydrides. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The transmission spectra of thin films of γ-phase yttrium trihydride YHx, x≅2.87, are measured in the energy range 0.05–6 eV at room temperature. The measured quantities are used to determine the frequency-dependent index of refraction, extinction coefficient, dielectric function, and optical conductivity. In the energy range (E=0.2–6 eV), interband transition and impurity-related transitions dominate the optical properties. In the low-energy range (E=0.05–0.2 eV), hydrogen vibration modes dominate the optical properties. In addition, strong absorption due to free carriers is observed. This work also evaluates several parameters such as plasma frequency, effective carrier density, and donor ionization energy. The possible sources for optical features observed in the spectra are also described. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
