    Notizen: Beams of high-energy heavy ions (Ar and U) from the UNILAC accelerator have been used to excite rare gases at pressures near 1 bar. The dominant spectroscopic feature observed in Ar, Kr, and Xe gases was molecular excimer emission at the second excimer continuum at 130, 150, and 170 nm, respectively. The excimer radiation was studied as a function of time (with respect to the excitation pulse), ion-beam current, pressure, and excitation density. The efficiency of excimer production from heavy-ion-beam energy was found to be several percent. Details of spectral shape, especially the ratio of first-to-second continuum emission, were found to depend on pressure and exciting beam type.

    Notizen: Spin-dependent absorption spectroscopy with circularly polarized synchrotron radiation is presented as a new method to study magnetism in magnetic solids. In the near-edge absorption region, the spin-dependent absorption coefficient probes the spin density of unoccupied states of selected angular momentum at the absorber atom. The spin-dependent absorption effects as function of temperature contain information on the local magnetic coupling. A large spin-dependent part of the absorption of ∼+0.22 at the Pt L2 edges in PtFe is observed in transmission and fluorescence mode.

    Notizen: Abstract The excitation function for Bhabha scattering was reinvestigated in the energy range between 775 and 840 keV (c.m.) in 1.4 keV steps using a monoenergetic e+ -beam and a high-resolution kinematic coincidence detector device. Corroborating our previous results, no resonance was observed around 1.8 MeV/c2 up to an improved upper limit of 0.5 b·eV/sr (c.m.) for the energy-integrated differential cross section (97 % C.L.) The data rule out the existence of a resonance with a cross section of 5.0 b·eV/sr, recently reported elsewhere.

    Notizen: Abstract γ-ray spectroscopic techniques have been applied to measure properties of excited states (E *〈2MeV) in210Pb,212Po, and213At after populating these neutron rich (N=128) nuclei via18O induced few-nucleon transfer reactions on208Pb and209Bi targets. In212Po an isomeric state is located atE *=1,477 keV with a halflife oft 1/2=14.7±0.3 ns. This state is interpreted to be the 8+ yrast level which decays to the ground state via the measured $$8^ + \left( {121.1 keV} \right)6^ + \left( {223.3 keV} \right)4^ + \left( {405.1 keV} \right)2^ + \left( {727.8 keV} \right)0^ + $$ γ-cascade.α-decay (E α≈10.2 MeV) of the isomer is also observed. In210Pb the time spectra for members of the 4+ (297.8keV) 2+ (799.4keV)0+ γ-cascade show a delayed component with a halflife oft 1/2=152±13 ns which is attributed to the known 8+ yrast state atE *=1.27 MeV. For213At first results on theγ-decay of excited states are presented.

    Notizen: Abstract The 2S 1/2-2P 1/2 Lamb-shift in hydrogenlike Sulfur was measured with a field quench technique. A high velocity beam of S15+-ions (v/c=0.086) prepared in the metastable 2S 1/2 state crosses a homogeneous magnetic field of about 1.8 Tesla. The strong electric field of 4·107 V/m in the rest frame of the ions mixes the longlived 2S 1/2-state (τ=7.18 nsec) with the short lived 2P 1/2-state (τ=2.4·10−5 ns). From the measured lifetime of the thus quenched 2S 1/2-state a Lamb-shift value of 25.14±0.24 THz is derived and compared with theoretical predictions.

    Notizen: Abstract Large spin-dependent absorption effects have been observed with circularly polarized photons of energies between 10.8 keV and 13.8 keV at theL 2,3-edges of Os, Ir, Pt, and Au impurities (3 at.%) in iron. The largest value of the spin-dependent absorption coefficient (µ c /µ o ∼+0.22) is found at the PtL 2-edge. From the energy dependence of the spin-dependent absorption at theL 2- andL 3-edges the spin-density profiles of thed 3/2-andd 5/2-projected states populated in the absorption process are derived. Thed 5/2-spin densities deduced from theL 3 spin-dependent absorption spectra agree well with spin-polarized band-structure calculations for the ferromagnetic ground state. A comparison of thed 3/2- andd 5/2-spin densities shows a strong contribution of the spin-orbit effects to the exchange splitting in Os, whereas only small spin-orbit effects are indicated for Ir, Pt and Au impurities.

    Notizen: Abstract The spin-dependent absorption of circularly polarized x-rays is studied at theL-edges of ferromagnetic Gd and Tb metal. At theL 1-edge a spin-dependent part of the absorption coefficient of 10−3–10−2 is observed. Strong resonance absorption known as “white line” occurs at theL 2- andL 3-absorption onset. Correlated with it one finds large spin-dependent absorption effects with amplitudes of a few percent. The spin-dependent absorption spectra reflect the profiles of the spin densities of the states populated in the absorption process. Thep-states show spin densities correlated with the first two flat bands above the Fermi level. The spin density of thed-like states is concentrated in the energy range of the white line. In Gd a splitting of ∼(0.5–0.6) eV of the unoccupied 5d spin up and spin down bands is indicated for both spin-orbit partners. In Tb a large dependence of the 5d spin density on the spin-orbit configuration is observed. The experimental results on the spin densities in Gd are compared with band structure calculations for the ferromagnetic ground-state. The theoretical and experimental spin density profiles agree well for thep-states but not for thed-states. The discrepancy concerning thed-states may be attributed to core-hole polarization effects in the absorption process.

    Notizen: Abstract Nuclear magnetic resonance on oriented nuclei has been detected for the first time via the destruction of the anisotropy of characteristic Lx-rays. The new method can be applied to isomeric states which decay only via highly converted transitions, for which the standard NMR-ON technique — detection of NMR via the anisotropy of γ-rays — is not applicable. The X-NMR-ON technique has been used to measure the magnetic hyperfine splitting of193mpt (Iπ=1322+; E=149.8 keV; T1/2= 4.3 d) to be ¦ gμ NBHF/h¦=111.3 (3) MHz. with the known hyperfine field of −1280(27) kG the magnetic moment of193mpt is deduced to be ¦μ¦=0.7417(14) μN. This magnetic moment differs strongly from the known magnetic moments of the 13/2+ isomeric states in Hg and Pb and195mPt.
