    Notes: The article deals with synthesis, characterization, and polymerization of 5-norbornene-2,3-dicarboximide end-capped resins (bisnadimides) based on 4,4′-diaminodiphenylether, 1,4/1,3-bis(4′-aminophenoxy) benzene, 2,2′-bis[4-(4′-aminophenoxy)phenyl]propane, and bis[4-(4′-aminophenoxy)phenyl]sulphone. Both exo and endo bisnadimides were prepared by reacting the aromatic diamines with exo or endo nadic anhydride in glacial acetic acid at 120°C. The exo or endo bisnadimides could be distinguished on the basis of differences observed in IR or 1H-NMR spectra. Both thermal (in solid state) and metathetical polymerization (using WCl6/tetramethyltin catalyst and chlorobenzene solvent) of bisnadimides was carried out. Only exo bisnadimides could be polymerized using metathesis reaction whereas thermal polymerization of both endo and exo bisnadimide could be successfully carried out at 300°C in static air atmosphere. The polymers were highly crosslinked and insoluble in common organic solvents. The polymers obtained by metathesis polymerization were light brown in color whereas those obtained by thermal polymerization were dark brown in color. Thermal stability of the thermally polymerized exo or endo bisnadimides was comparable. These polymers were stable up to 400°C and decomposed in a single step above this temperature. The char yield at 800°C depended on the structure of the polymer and was in the 39-56% range. The polymers formed by metathesis polymerization showed a 1-3% weight loss in the temperature range 226-371°C and decomposed in a single step above 440°C. The char yields were higher in these polymers (53-71%) compared to those obtained by thermal polymerization. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 35: 2323-2331, 1997

    Notes: The paper deals with the synthesis and characterization of seven polypyromellitimide samples having varying contents of phosphine oxide and ether linkages in the backbone with pendant maleimido groups. Curing characteristics and thermal stability of polymers were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic thermogravimetry. It was observed that an increase in pendant maleimido groups resulted in an increase in the heat of polymerization. Char yield also increased with increase in phosphorus content. Conductivity and dielectric parameters were also evaluated. The mechanism of conduction was found to be a combination of electronic and ionic type.

    Notes: Cardinyl acrylate (CA), prepared by the reaction of acryloyl chloride and cardinol, was copolymerized with methyl methacrylate (MMA) in bulk at 80°C using 2% benzoyl peroxide as an initiator. The copolymer composition was determined by 1H-NMR spectroscopy. Three copolymer samples containing 0.0048-0.0838 mol fraction of cardinyl acrylate were obtained. A significant improvement in the thermal stability of MMA was observed by incorporating 0.0048-0.0838 mol fraction of CA in the backbone. The activation energy for decomposition in the temperature range 350-480°C for copolymers was higher than PMMA. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The curing behavior of epoxy resins prepared by reacting epichlorohydrin with 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl methane (DADPM)/4,4′-diaminodiphenyl ether (DADPE) or 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) was investigated using DDS and tris-(m-aminophenyl)phosphine oxide (TAP) as curing agents. A broad exothermic transition with two maxima were observed in the temperature range of 100-315°C when TAP was used as the curing agent. The effect of varying DDS concentration on curing behavior of epoxy resin was also investigated. Peak exotherm temperature (Texo) decreased with increasing concentration of DDS, whereas heat of curing (ΔH) increased with an increase in amine concentration up to an optimum value and then decreased. Thermal stability of the resins, cured isothermally at 200°C for 3 h, was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis in a nitrogen atmosphere. Glass fiber-reinforced multifunctional epoxy resin laminates were fabricated and the mechanical properties were evaluated. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: This article describes the synthesis and thermal characterization of copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and alkyl methacrylates. The copolymerization was carried out using different mol fractions (0.05-0.25) of alkyl methacrylates, i.e., octyl methacrylate (OMA)/decyl methacrylate (DMA)/lauryl methacrylate (LMA)/stearyl methacrylate (SMA), in the initial feed at 80°C. The copolymer composition was determined from 1H-NMR. The thermal stability of the copolymers was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis and pyrolysis gas chromatography. A two/three-step degradation was observed in the copolymer samples. The monomers were the major product of degradation in most of the copolymers except in SMA/MMA copolymers where the product of side-group elimination was also observed. An attempt was also made to determine the yield of the monomers during degradation and then to evaluate the copolymer composition. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The article describes the effect of incorporating low mol fractions of N-o-tolymaleimide (MO)/N-p-tolymaleimide (MP) in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) on Tg, thermal behavior, mechanical, and optical properties. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of PMMA increased by 10-12°C upon incorporation of an ∼ 0.026 mol fraction of N-arylmaleimides. A further increase of N-arylmaleimide content up to 0.1 mol fraction in the copolymers resulted in a further ∼ 10°C increase in Tg. The tensile strength and % elongation decreased, whereas modulus increased with increasing maieimide content. The solar transmittance and % transmittance at higher wavelengths of the copolymer sheets having a low mol fraction of N-arylmalemides (i.e., 0.026-0.05) were comparable to PMMA. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Urethane prepolymer was prepared by reacting two moles of tolylene diisocyanate with one mole of poly(ethylene glycol) (mol wt 400), followed by end-capping with two moles of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate at room temperature (30 ± 1°C) in the presence of stannous octoate as catalyst. Different proportions of methyl methacrylate (MMA) were added to the urethane prepolymer in order to study the effect of composition on mechanical properties. Sheets were fabricated by adding 1% azobis (isobutyronitrile) (w/w) to this solution. All the copolymer sheets had a transmittance similar to the PMMA sheet, in the wavelength range of 400-800 nm. Tensile strength and modulus decreased with decreasing MMA content, whereas percent elongation at break increased. All the samples showed 2-3 stages of degradation. Initial decomposition temperature increased with increasing carbamate content. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: This article describes the synthesis and characterization of several methyl nadimides endcapped resins based on tris(3-aminophenyl)phosphine oxide. These resins were prepared by reacting methyl-5-norbornene 2,3-dicarboxylic anhydride (methyl nadic anhydride) (MNA), pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA)/3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (BTDA)/2,2-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane dianhydride (6F), and tris(3-aminophenyl)phosphine oxide (TAP) in glacial acetic acid/acetone. Structural characterization of the resins was done by elemental analysis, IR, and 1H-NMR. Thermal characterization of uncured resins using DSC and TGA techniques revealed an exothermic transition accompanied by a weight loss in the temperature range of 200-350°C. Residual weight at 800°C in nitrogen was found to be 47-55%. Isothermal curing of the resins was done at 340°C for 1 h in an air atmosphere. The cured resins were stable up to 400 ± 20°C. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
