    Notes: The anisotropy contributions in epitaxial Fe/MnPd bilayers were analyzed in this study. It was found that due to ferromagnetic–antiferromagnetic interfacial exchange coupling, large uniaxial and cubic anisotropy contributions are also induced, in addition to the unidirectional anisotropy. These contributions play an essential role in the magnetization reversal process of the system, in which unusual reversal processes were found upon some fields orientations. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Tunneling giant magnetoresistance (MR) of the Fe–Al2O3 nanogranular films has been observed over a wide range of Fe volume fraction x and it took a maximum of 4.4% at room temperature for the film with x=0.45 at H=10 kOe. Furthermore, the field dependence of MR of the samples is well described by the form proportional to the square of the magnetization. Moreover, an estimate of the magnetic anisotropy energy density Ku increases with the decrease of x, yielding a value 2 orders of magnitude greater than the value for bulk Fe when x=0.23. The Bloch's law, MS(T)=MS0(1−BTb), can also hold for all the samples but with nonbulk parameters dependent on the Fe volume fraction. These results reveal a percolation effect on the magnetic properties, as well as the conductance, in such nanogranular films. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Large magnetic-field-induced strain (MFIS) of −2700 ppm has been obtained from the Heusler alloy Ni52Mn23Ga25 at 300 K. The temperature for structure transformation was confirmed by three types of magnetic measurements. A burst of MFIS up to 5400 ppm could be induced by rotating a steady field of 1 T. In the martensitic phase, the material have a high saturated magnetization of 66 Am2/kg and a high anisotropy of 0.8 T. The variant reorientation mainly occurred in the region of 0.2–0.8 T. The large MFIS is sensitive to temperature, suggesting that it can only be induced when martensite and parent phase are coexisted. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The hysteresis loops of exchange-biased FeMn/Co bilayers have been measured by means of a superconducting quantum interference device magnetometer. The obtained right and left coercivities exhibit different temperature dependences. With temperature increasing, the left coercivity monotonously increases while the right one remains almost constant until a critical temperature Ti. Upon decreasing the thickness of the antiferromagnet (AF) layer, Ti decreases. The asymmetric behavior of the right and left coercivities indicates that the reversal mechanisms are different for increasing and decreasing field. By taking into account the temperature dependence of the spin alignment in the AF layer, the unusual asymmetric behavior is well explained. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A giant magnetic-field-induced strain (MFIS) of −3100 ppm has been obtained in Heusler alloy Ni52Mn22.2Ga25.8 single crystal in the [001] direction at a temperature from 23 to 31 °C. This MFIS reaches saturation in an applied field about 6 kOe, and exhibits the same amplitude with an opposite sign while the field is perpendicular to the samples. According to a previous model, this MFIS associates with the twin boundary motion. The martensitic self-strain has been found to be 2%, implying a preferential orientation of martensite variants. Results related to the magnetic properties are discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have found a complete thermoelastic intermartensitic transformation between modulated and unmodulated martensite in single-crystal Ni52Mn24.5Ga23.5. This intermartensitic transformation provides a much larger strain than that of the martensitic transformation. A giant switching-like strain of ±5.0% can be achieved by a small magnetic field of 0.2 T upon the intermartensitic transformation. In the modulated martensite, a large recoverable magnetic-field-induced strain of up to 1.2% has been obtained. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The low-temperature magnetic and transport properties of La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 nanoparticles have been investigated. It is found that a surface spin-glass behavior exists in La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 nanoparticles, which undergo a magnetic transition to a frozen state below 45 K. The low-temperature surface spin-glass behavior exists even at the highest field used (H=50 kOe). Moreover, the spin-glass-like transition disappears for particles above 50 nm. In addition, the suppressed low-field magnetoconductivity (LFMC) observed at low temperature for nanosized La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 is obviously lower than the expected upper limit of LFMC, 1/3, for polycrystalline manganites, which is proposed to arise from the higher-order tunneling through the insulating spin-glass-like surface layers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Single crystals of a pseudoquaternary Heusler alloy, Ni52Mn16Fe8Ga24, have now been synthesized. The substitution of Fe for Mn strengthens the magnetic exchange interactions, increasing the Curie temperature to 381 K. The Fe also increases the Ni magnetic moment to 0.41 μB relative to that in the stoichiometric Heusler composition. The strain accompanying the martensitic transformation is 2.4% in zero field and can be enhanced to 4.2% by a field of 1.2 T. A field-induced strain of 1.15% has been induced along [001] in unstressed crystals with magnetic fields of 1.2 T applied at 291 K. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The temperature dependence of the coercivity in biased FeMn/Co bilayers is investigated. An asymmetric behavior of the left and right coercivity with varying temperature is observed. The asymmetry can be understood by taking into account the variation of the spin arrangements in the antiferromagnetic layer. The calculated results are in agreement with the experimental ones qualitatively. All these results suggest that the magnetization reversal mechanisms are different for increasing and decreasing fields. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Stress-free and two-way thermoelastic shape memory, with 1.2% strain and 6 K temperature hysteresis, has been found in single crystalline Ni52Mn24Ga24. The deformation can be enhanced more than three times, up to 4.0% shrinkage with a bias field 1.2 T applied along the measurement direction, or changed to 1.5% expansion by the 1.2 T applied perpendicular to the measurement direction. For achieving a large deformation, the magnetic field exhibits a more evident contribution than an external stress on this material. These characteristics can be attributed to the low level of internal stress and the preferential orientation of the martensitic variants. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
