    Notes: A statistical model to investigate the distribution of dynamic random access memory data retention times is proposed. The model assumes that the retention time is determined by a junction leakage current generated at carrier traps by a Shockley–Read–Hall process, and that the trap levels are randomly distributed not only among the memory cells but also within a cell. Monte Carlo results based on the model were in excellent agreement with experimental results, which confirmed the validity of the model. An analytical expression of the retention time distribution was also derived, and proved a good approximation near the 50% cumulative probability. Based on the model, variation in the retention time distributions among samples was found to be related to different trap-level distributions at the SiO2/Si interface. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The solid immersion lens (SIL) near-field magneto-optical (MO) recording technique offers a significant increase in areal density through near-field resolution enhancement. Since the near-field recording scheme requires close proximity of the optical recording head and the magnetic medium, the SIL MO recording setup is usually changed to a "first surface" recording. This requires further optimization of the optical flying head design and a MO medium. In this work marks as small as 150 nm using a SIL with a 680 nm laser source and a TbFeCo magneto-optical medium were recorded. The minimum size of a recorded mark is strongly dependent on the slider flying height, the flying attitude, and lens centering. It should be emphasized that recording power as small as 4 mW is sufficient enough to achieve carrier-to-noise ratio of more than 30 dB. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Magnetic and magneto-optical properties of TbFeCo/Pt and TbFeCo/Pd multilayer films prepared by sputter deposition are discussed in conjunction with the multilayer structure. The magnetic behaviors in TbFeCo/Pt and TbFeCo/Pd multilayers are very similar to each other, and the saturation magnetization Ms at 298 K increases with thickness t of Pt and Pd up to tPt, tPd=12 Å. In TbFeCo/Pt multilayers, the contribution of Pt to the polar Kerr spectra is significant at ultraviolet photon energies. The Kerr rotation θK and ellipticity ηK are enhanced with Pt layer thickness and become saturated at tPt=12 Å. On the other hand, little contribution from Pd atoms is found in the TbFeCo/Pd multilayer. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effect of Pt additives in TbFeCo(Pt)/Pt multilayers on magnetic properties and magneto-optical Kerr effect is investigated. The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy Ku of the multilayer becomes larger (∼2×106 erg/cm3) than that of the TbFeCo(Pt) single layer. Pt layers are found to contribute significantly to the polar Kerr spectra at ultraviolet photon energies beyond 4 eV. The largest enhancement in the Kerr rotation θK is found at about 5 eV. The Kerr rotation θK and ellipticity ηK are enhanced with increasing Pt layer-thickness tPt, and become saturated at tPt=12 Å. This result implies that Pt atoms up to about 6 Å from the interfaces are contributing to the Kerr activity. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have studied the dynamical motion of magnetic-flux lines penetrating into a melt-processed Y–Ba–Cu–O bulk superconductor during pulsed field magnetization. Subsequent flux creep was investigated by measuring signals from three Hall sensors mounted at the center, periphery, and the midpoint on the top surface of the sample at 77 K. The penetration of the magnetic flux into the sample is quite sluggish as long as the applied field is low. However, the magnetic flux penetrates suddenly and moves rapidly in response to the changing external field during the ascending stage of the pulsed field, when the intensity exceeds 1.5–2 T. Furthermore, when the rise time of the pulsed field is very short, the local magnetization measured at the midpoint is found to oscillate with time, as soon as the sudden penetration of the magnetic flux takes place. The fast motion of the magnetic flux generates heat and increases the temperature of the sample. This effect appears as a reduction of the trapped flux, already in the descending stage of the pulsed field and it contributes to the suppression of the flux creep after the pulse. The creep is suppressed more when the applied field is large, and it diminishes most in the center of the sample. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We demonstrate optical response from a side-injection light-controlled bistable laser diode buried with semi-insulating InP using hydride vapor phase epitaxy. The buried surface around both the 〈110〉 and 〈−110〉 oriented mesas is flat. The bistable operation is obtained by applying control voltage to the saturable absorption region. After optimization of the device parameters, we obtained error-free operation at a bit rate as high as 2.5 Gbit/s. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: Neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS) is considered to be involved in the pathogenesis of ischemic brain damage. In the present study, the effect of a novel neuroprotective phenylpyrimidine derivative, 4-(4-fluorophenyl)-2-methyl-6-(5-piperidinopentyloxy)pyrimidine hydrochloride (NS-7), on depolarization-stimulated NOS activity was examined in cultured neurons of mouse cerebral cortex. Various depolarizing stimuli such as veratridine, KCl, and N-methyl-d-aspartate increased the NOS activity determined by cyclic GMP formation. NS-7 concentration-dependently inhibited both the veratridine- and KCl-induced NOS activation with IC50 values of 9.3 and 9.6 µM, respectively. The reversal of KCl-evoked NOS activity by NS-7 was also observed under blockade of both ionotropic glutamate receptors and the Na+ channel with MK-801, 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione, and tetrodotoxin. In contrast, NS-7, even at 100 µM, did not affect N-methyl-d-aspartate-stimulated NOS activity, nor did it have any influence on NOS activity determined in the soluble fraction of rat hippocampus. Because NS-7 has already been shown to block both Na+ and Ca2+ channels, the present findings suggest that this compound inhibits depolarization-induced NOS activation by reducing Ca2+ influx through blockade of Na+ and Ca2+ channels in primary neuronal culture.

    Notes: Monoclonal antibodies against human serum amyloid A (SAA) were generated in rat (which seems not to have mature SAA proteins) by immunizing intact human SAA. Thirteen clones selected by initial screening were analysed based on reactivity with synthetic peptides of SAA and with carboxyl-terminal truncated recombinant SAA. Antibodies were divided into four types, i.e. those recognizing the area around residue 18, 30, 90, and 100, respectively, of SAA. The antibody to the carboxyl terminus (around residue 100) of SAA, when subjected to immunohistochemistry for amyloid deposits in specimens from patients with reactive amyloidosis, always yielded negative reactivity, supporting the general concept that the carboxyl terminus of SAA is absent from human AA deposits.

    Notes: Spontaneous regression is sometimes seen in malignant skin tumours. We report a 68-year-old woman whose Bowen's disease showed spontaneous complete regression. Prominent infiltration of T cells and increased vascularity were found in the upper dermis of the regressed lesion. Strong expression of Fas (APO-1/CD95) antigen, an apoptosis-related tumour necrosis factor receptor family protein, in the primary lesion and faint expression following regression suggest the involvement of Fas-mediated apoptosis in the spontaneous complete regression of our patient's Bowen's disease.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of 4-(4-fluorophenyl)-2-methyl-6-(5-piperidinopentyloxy) pyrimidine hydrochloride (NS-7), a novel neuroprotective compound, on the voltage-sensitive sodium channels (VSSC) were examined in the rat brain and cardiac myocytes. NS-7 inhibited [3H]batrachotoxinin A 20α-benzoate (BTX) binding (neurotoxin receptor site 2) in brain membranes with a Ki value of 1 μM , while the compound was less effective in the cardiac myocytes (Ki = 13 μM). Aconitine, on the other hand, inhibited [3H]BTX binding to brain membranes and cardiac myocytes with the same potency. In contrast, NS-7 had no affinity for [3H]saxitoxin binding in brain (neurotoxin receptor site 1). In superfused slices of the rat cerebral cortex, NS-7 inhibited the veratridine (5 μM)-evoked glutamate release in a concentration-dependent manner, the IC50 value of which was 7.7 μM, whereas the compound showed a weak and not significant suppression of KCl-evoked glutamate release. The tissue concentrations of NS-7 in the rat cerebral cortex and heart were 89 and 28 nmole/g tissue, respectively, 5 min after its intravenous injection (8 mg/kg). Furthermore, in the cerebral cortex, NS-7 distributed preferentially to the membrane-enriched synaptosomal fraction. Since neurotoxin receptor site 2 is located in the transmembrane region of the VSSC moiety, the channel function may be substantially inhibited by a peripheral administration of NS-7. These results suggest that the blockade of neurotoxin receptor site 2 of VSSC in the brain contributes to the neuroprotective action of NS-7.
