Notes: Abstract Wet electrolytic oxidation of organics in the presence of electrolytes and externally added oxygen gas was investigated for wastewater treatment. The experimental apparatus was a 300 ml electrolytic batch autoclave operated mainly at 250 ∘C and 7 MPa. The results showed that the presence of halide ions such as chlorides and bromides strongly catalyses the conversion of pollutant organic compounds to innocuous compounds such as CO2 and water. The addition of external oxygen gas in wet electrolytic oxidation of acetic acid strongly suppressed the cathodic evolution of hydrogen gas and demonstrated a TOC removal profile with an apparent current efficiency higher than 100% for high concentration acetic acid solutions.

Notes: Summary Human neutrophils preincubated with chemotactic factors showed enhanced OPZ-induced oxygen consumption. Maximum capacity of neutrophils to consume oxygen was found to be limited for both FMLP-treated cells and control cells. But with lower doses of OPZ, FMLP-treated cells consumed more oxygen than control cells.

Notes: Summary The levels of plasma testosterone, testosterone-oestradiol binding globulin (TeBG) and total serum acid phosphatase (TSAP) following antiandrogenic hormone therapy were investigated in 17 patients with prostatic carcinoma. The low levels of plasma total and free testosterone induced by castration decreased further after diethylsitlboestrol diphosphate (DES-D) administration. Plasma TeBG binding capacity after castration was 118.9% of the pre-treatment level and increased to 193.9%, 204.0% and 212.7% at 1, 2 and 3 weeks after DES-D dosing. The in vitro binding of 3H-testosterone to TeBG was not influenced in the presence of DES-D or stilboestrol. Clinical response following the DES-D therapy was associated with a decrease in the levels of TSAP. A significantly inversed correlation was found between the decrease in TSAP and increase in TeBG at completion of DES-D therapy. These results suggest that the high binding capacity of TeBG lowers the biologically active fraction of testosterone and thus may produce clinical effects.

Notes: Summary Reticulocytosis was induced in rabbits by bleeding anemia and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity was determined. Reticulocytes were found to contain about 1.3 times as much activity as mature erythrocytes.

Notes: Summary Lipid peroxides in rabbit erythrocytes and plasma were determined while anemia was induced by daily bleeding. They increased as reticulocytes increased and returned to normal with the morphological transformation to mature cells.

Notes: Summary Serum opsonic activity against zymosan was found to be decreased more markedly in highly diluted O type serum than in the other 3 types, among which no difference was noted. Heat-killed bacteria were equally well opsonized with any type of serum. This peculiar activity of O type serum against zymosan was not affected by the removal of isohemagglutinins. No inhibitory activity was demonstrable in O type serum.

Notes: Abstract A cleidocranial dysplasia syndrome associated with atresia ani, urogenital anomalies, and psoriasis-like skin lesions is reported in two siblings (1 boy, 1 girl) in a family of Japanese descent. There is no family history of cleidocranial dysplasia syndrome and/or psoriasis. Consanguinity is denied.

Notes: Abstract In a patient with typical copper deficiency, we found superoxide dismutase (SOD, 1.15.1.1) activity and copper in erythrocytes to be decreased to 52% and 46% of age-matched controls, respectively. However, these were not so markedly depleted as plasma copper (17%) or ceruloplasmin (20%). After copper replacement therapy, erythrocyte copper and SOD activity gradually returned to the control levels. Although certain abnormalities reported in copper deficiency in animals were expected, osmotic fragility of erythrocytes of the patient was normal and damage of the liver and heart were not a feature as far as could be determined by electrocardiography and routine laboratory examinations. Probably a decrease of SOD to this extent is not severe enough to lead to superoxide-induced damage.

Notes: Abstract A 12-year-old boy with growth hormone deficiency and partial diabetes insipidus resulting from transsphenoidal meningoencephalocele and with eye abnormalities is described. Fifteen other patients with transsphenoidal meningoencepalocele have been reported. Hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunctions were diagnosed by endocrinological studies in seven cases. It is important to recognize transsphenoidal meningoencephalocele as a cause of hypopituitarism, since some cases may have gone unrecognized. The association of hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction and a midline craniocerebral anomaly has been reported in patients with cleft lip and/or palate, septo-optic dysplasia, the holoprosencephalies, and Kallmann syndrome. However, there was no evidence of transsphenoidal meningoencephalocele in these disorders and this may be a different form of midline craniocerebral and midfacial anomaly.

Notes: Abstract Pituitary hyperplasia, microadenoma or an empty sella was detected in three children with primary hypothyroidism and three with Turner syndrome with the use of high resolution contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) with thin slices. Hyperplasia or microadenoma of the pituitary gland frequently occurs secondary to primary hypothyroidism and gonadal dysgenesis, and recognition of these results may eliminate unnecessary surgery in favor of hormone replacement therapy. High resolution contrast-enhanced CT, especially coronal CT, with thin slices is very helpful in demonstrating these pituitary abnormalities.
