Notizen: Objective  To compare peripheral pulse pressure waveforms in normal pregnancy, gestational hypertension (GH) and pre-eclampsia (PE).Design  Comparative study.Setting  Tertiary referral teaching hospital.Sample  Women with hypertensive disease in pregnancy and matched normal pregnant controls. Methods  Women in the third trimester of pregnancy with newly developed PE (n= 27) or GH (n= 33) were studied by radial artery applanation tonometry. Values were compared with those for gestational age matched normal pregnant women (n= 39).Main outcome measures  Augmentation Index. Results  Hypertension was of equal severity in PE and GH. Central augmentation pressure and augmentation index, indicating vasoconstriction, were mildly elevated in GH, but markedly elevated in PE.Conclusion  Non-invasive applanation tonometry discriminates among normal pregnancy, GH and PE, and may be useful to predict PE.

Notizen: Abstract Obesity has increased dramatically over the past two decades and currently about 50% of US adults and 25% of US children are overweight. The current epidemic of obesity is caused largely by an environment that promotes excessive food intake and discourages physical activity. This chapter reviews what is known about environmental influences on physical activity and eating behaviors. Recent trends in food supply, eating out, physical activity, and inactivity are reviewed, as are the effects of advertising, promotion, and pricing on eating and physical activity. Public health interventions, opportunities, and potential strategies to combat the obesity epidemic by promoting an environment that supports healthy eating and physical activity are discussed.

Notizen: In order to study neuroendocrine and behavioural stress responses in female rats post partum we aimed to establish a relevant emotional stressor – the maternal defence test based on maternal aggression of a lactating resident towards a virgin or lactating intruder approaching the cage. Exposure to maternal defence significantly elevated corticotropin (ACTH) and corticosterone responses of the residents and of virgin or lactating intruders, with an attenuated response in lactating residents and lactating intruders. Exposure to maternal defence increased plasma oxytocin in virgin intruders only. The aggressive behaviour displayed by the residents was directly correlated with the amount of defensive behaviour of the intruder and independent of the intruder's reproductive state. However, the amount of maternal and explorative behaviours displayed by the lactating residents was significantly higher when exposed to a lactating, compared to a virgin, intruder. ACTH responses in lactating residents exposed to virgin intruders were significantly correlated to the amount of offensive (direct correlation) and maternal (inverse correlation) behaviours they displayed. Plasma prolactin concentrations, elevated in lactating compared to virgin rats under basal conditions, were found to be reduced in the lactating residents and intruders in response to exposure to the maternal defence test, whereas it was unchanged in virgin intruders. To test for the involvement of brain oxytocin in neuroendocrine and behavioural responses of the lactating residents an oxytocin receptor antagonist (0.1 µg/5 µL) was infused icv 10 min prior to testing. This treatment increased basal, but not stress-induced, ACTH, corticosterone and oxytocin secretion. Whereas parameters of aggressive behaviour were unchanged, the antagonist reduced signs of maternal behaviour during maternal defence. In summary, the maternal defence test has been characterized as a relevant emotional stressor for female rats which is useful for studying neuroendocrine and emotional responses in females, in particular in the context of reproductive adaptations.

Notizen: 1. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of long-term nitric oxide (NO) blockade on contractions of the rat ileum induced by muscarinic agonists.2. Male Wistar rats received the NO synthesis inhibitor NG-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME; 20 mg/rat per day) in drinking water for 7, 15, 30 and 60 days. Concentration–responses curves to methacholine and carbachol were obtained and pEC50 values were calculated. Saturation binding assays were performed in membranes prepared from rat ileum after 60 days of l-NAME treatment and the dissociation constant (KD) and maximal number of binding sites (Bmax) were determined by Scatchard analysis.3. The NO synthase activity of the ileum was markedly reduced in all l-NAME-treated groups. At 60 days after l-NAME treatment, a significant increase in the potency of methacholine (fourfold) and carbachol (threefold) was observed. In binding studies, we found a significant increase in Bmax for [3H]-quinuclidinyl benzilate of approximately 57% in the l-NAME treated group without any significant change in KD values. The contractile response to methacholine was not modified by the soluble guanylate cyclase inhibitor 1H-[1,2,4]oxadiazolo-[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (3 µmol/L). No morphological alterations in the rat ileum were observed in l-NAME-treated rats.4. Our findings suggest that treatment with l-NAME for 60 days induces a marked increase in the potency of methacholine and carbachol, as well as an increase in receptor number in the rat ileum.

Notizen: Summary A 13-year-old male pseudohermaphrodite (mixed gonadal dysgenesis, unilateral testicular differentiation) was found to be a chromosomal mosaic of the 45, XO/46, XY type, the Y chromosome being a symmetrical dicentric chromosome. Presumed Y chromosomes similar to this one have been observed before, but their identification was not supported by autoradiographic data. In the present study the identification of the dicentric as a Y chromosome was supported by observing a relatively late DNA replication during the S period. The differentiation of testicular tissue on one side may be related to the presence of short arm material of the Y chromosome in the genome of the XY dic cells.

Notizen: Abstract A giant aneurysm of the right callosomarginal artery is reported in a 3-month-old child. This location is rare: including our case reported here, only three cases have been described. Clinicoradiological findings are presented and the surgical procedure is illustrated.

Notizen: Abstract Recently, porous metals and ceramics have been made by melting the solid in a hydrogen atmosphere and then cooling through the eutectic point; the technique is known as the GASAR process. The size, shape, orientation and volume fraction of the pores can be controlled by the direction and rate of cooling and the pressure of the system. Here we describe the uniaxial compressive behaviour of GASAR copper with cylindrical pores oriented in the direction of loading. The elastic modulus and yield strength of the porous materials increase linearly with increasing relative density. Initial plastic deformation was found to be due to plastic yielding of the solid rather than buckling of the cells walls. The characteristic densification strain decreased linearly with increasing relative density.
