    Notes: The operational limits observed in spherical tokamaks, notably the small tight aspect ratio tokamak (START) device [A. Sykes et al., Nucl. Fusion 32, 694 (1992)], are consistent with those found in conventional aspect ratio tokamaks. In particular the highest β achieved (∼40%) is consistent with an ideal magneto-hydro-dynamic (MHD) Troyon type limit, the upper limit on density is well described by the Greenwald density (πa2n¯e/Ip∼1) and the normalized current (Ip/aBt) is limited such that q95(approximately-greater-than)2. Stability calculations indicate scope for increasing both normalized β and normalized current beyond the values so far achieved, although wall stabilization is generally needed for low-n modes. In double null configurations current terminating disruptions occur at each of the operational boundaries, though the current quench tends to be slow at the density limit and disruptions at high β may be due to the low q. In early limiter START discharges, before the divertor coils were installed, disruptions rarely occurred. Instead internal reconnection events which have all the characteristics of a disruption except the current quench occurred. These various disruptive behaviors are explained in terms of a model in which helicity is conserved during the disruption. Due to the low toroidal field beam ions in START, and α particles in a ST power plant, are super-Alfvénic. This gives the possibility for toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAEs) to occur and such modes are frequently observed in START neutral beam injection (NBI) discharges, but seem to be benign. The features of these observed TAEs are shown to be in agreement with MHD calculations.

    Notes: The trajectories of neutral beam injected energetic ions in spherical tokamaks are examined. The large poloidal magnetic field in the outboard region of spherical tokamaks causes neutral beam injected ions to be born on trapped orbits even with cotangential injection. Numerical solutions to the equations for particle motion and for guiding center drifts are compared in several magnetic equilibria for a range of particle initial conditions. Even when rL/a∼1/4 the guiding center orbits closely resemble the path of the instantaneous center of gyration of the particle motion; exceptions occur primarily for orbits near the trapped/passing boundary. Finite Larmor radius effects are included in guiding center simulations of prompt orbit loss in the National Spherical Tokamak Experiment (NSTX) [J. Spitzer et al., Fusion Technol. 30, 1337 (1996)]. Orbit loss in the NSTX is caused primarily by collisions with the close fitting conducting shell, and severe losses would be expected with counter directed injection. While most orbits are similar to those found in conventional tokamaks, additional orbit types are possible in spherical tokamaks. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Small Tight Aspect Ratio Tokamak (START) [A. Sykes et al., Nucl. Fusion 32, 769 (1994)] spherical tokamak has recently achieved the record value of toroidal β∼30% in a tokamak-like configuration. The improvements that have made these results possible are presented along with a description of the global equilibrium parameters of the discharges. The ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability of these discharges is analyzed, and they are found to be in close proximity to both the ballooning limit and the external current driven kink limit, but they are found to be far from the pressure driven external kink limit. Disruptivity for a range of shots is not correlated with the normalized β limit, but does correlate well with the empirical high-li disruption limit. The transport properties of these high-β equilibria are analyzed and compared to conventional tokamak scaling laws and transport models. The global transport is at least as good as that predicted by the ITER97-ELMy (edge-localized) scaling law. The local ion transport is in good agreement with that predicted by neoclassical models. The electron transport is anomalous, showing rough agreement with the Lackner–Gottardi transport model. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The cockroach is known to possess several morphologically distinct types of sensilla on its antenna, each of which contain a couple or a few receptor cells that respond to an array of compounds. We recorded the response of cells exclusively from one type of sensillum to evaluate the variation in the response of the cells in these sensilla to three closely related alcohols and their binary mixtures. Our results indicate that cells within the class of those responsive to aliphatic alcohols are otherwise variable in their response to particular aliphatic alcohols and not easily classifiable into subclasses. They also indicate that patterns of responses among cells are not robust with respect to concentration. Finally, a considerable level of inhibition is indicated in the response of the receptor cells to binary mixtures compared with the response to pure odorants. The data suggest that discrimination of alcohols (and other odorants of general but not special significance) by the cockroach cannot be understood simply in terms of labeled lines or linear filters.

    Notes: Abstract Using 27 490 Z0→τ+τ− decays, accumulated in 1991, 1992 and 1993 with the OPAL detector at LEP, a direct test ofCP-invariance in the neutral current reactione + e −→τ+τ− is performed by measuringCP-odd observables which are proportional to the weak dipole moment of the τ-lepton. A new method based on optimalCP-odd observables constructed from the τ flight and spin directions is employed. More sensitive measurements of the real and, for the first time, the imaginary part of the weak dipole moment with highest possible signal to noise ratio are obtained. No evidence for a non-zero expectation value of the considered observables and hence forCP-violation is observed. An upper limit on the weak dipole moment of |Re(d τ ω )|〈7.8×10−18 e·cm and |Im(d τ ω )|〈4.5×10−17 e·cm with 95% confidence level is obtained.

    Notes: Abstract The leptonic branching ratios of the tau lepton have been determined from data collected by the OPAL detector in 1991 and 1992. From a sample of 27196 e+e−→τ+τ− candidates we find 7322 $$\tau \to e\nu \bar \nu$$ and 7941 $$\tau \to \mu \nu \bar \nu$$ candidates. Using efficiency and background estimates determined from a study of Monte Carlo events and control samples of data, the branching ratios $$B(\tau \to e\nu \bar \nu )$$ =(18.14±0.20±0.28)% and $$B(\tau \to \mu \nu \bar \nu )$$ =(17.48±0.18±0.23)% have been obtained. These new results have been combined with the published results for the 1990 OPAL data to yield the following branching ratios for data taken between 1990 and 1992: $$\begin{gathered} B(\tau \to e\nu \bar \nu ) = (18.04 \pm 0.33)\% , \hfill \\ B(\tau \to \mu \nu \bar \nu ) = (17.36 \pm 0.27)\% . \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ These leptonic branching ratios are used with other properties of the muon and tau-lepton to test the universality of charged current leptonic couplings in these decays. The ratio $$R_\tau = B(\tau \to hadrons + \nu _\tau )/B(\tau \to e\bar \nu _e \nu _\tau )$$ is calculated using our measured values of the leptonic branching fractions of the tau and tau lifetime from which a value of α s (Q 2=M τ 2 ) is extracted. The value of α s (Q 2=M Z 2 ) is obtained byQ 2 evolution and agrees with the value from the Z0 line shape analysis.

    Notes: Abstract The properties of hadronic Z0 decays with final state photons, measured with OPAL at LEP, have been compared with predictions from two different matrix element calculations ofO(αα s ). Two calculations, GNJETS and EEPRAD, have been investigated which use different schemes to restrict the phase space around the poles of the cross section. Assuming the E0-JADE jet definition, both calculations describe the data well in large regions of phase space fory cut values around 0.06. For very large and very small jet-photon masses some deviations from the predictions have been found, indicating the importance of higher order corrections. Significant differences between the calculations are only apparent in the predicted rate of 1-jet plus photon events. The rate is higher in GNJETS which reproduces the data better than EEPRAD.

    Notes: Abstract The results of a study of charm meson production in semileptonic B hadron decays are presented. Based on a sample of 1.72 million hadronic Z0 decays the following product branching ratios (averaged over electrons and muons) are obtained: $$\begin{gathered} B(b \to D^ + \ell X) \cdot B(D^ + \to K^ - \pi ^ + \pi ^ + ) \hfill \\ = (1.82 \pm 0.20 \pm 0.12) \times 10^{ - 3} , \hfill \\ B(b \to D^0 \ell X) \cdot B(D^0 \to K^ - \pi ^ + ) \hfill \\ = (2.52 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.17) \times 10^{ - 3} \hfill \\ B(b \to D^* \ell X) \cdot B(D^{* + } \to D^0 \pi ^ + ) \cdot B(D^0 \to K^ - \pi ^ + ) \hfill \\ = (7.53 \pm 0.47 \pm 0.56) \times 10^{ - 4} \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The results of a search for the narrow P-wave charmed mesons, (D J ), in semileptonic B decays are also reported. Using the decay channels D J 0 →D+π−, D J 0 →D*+π− and D + J →D0π+ we observe a total signal of 44±8 −7 +3 D J 0 and 48±10 −6 +3 D J + events. This is the first evidence for semileptonic B decays to charged P-wave charm states. The observed signals also provide evidence for the production of both pseudovector and tensor P-wave charmed mesons in semileptonic B decay. Together these modes are estimated to make up 34±7% of charmed semileptonic B0 and B+ decays.

    Notes: Abstract The decay τ−→π− − + v τ has been studied using data collected with the OPAL detector at LEP during 1992 and 1993. The hadronic structure functions for this decay are measured model independently assuming G-parity invariance and neglecting scalar currents. Simultaneously the parity violating asymmetry parameter is determined to be $$\gamma VA = 1.08 _{ - 0.41 - 0.25}^{ + 0.46 + 0.14} $$ , consistent with the Standard Model prediction of γVA=1 for left-handed tau neutrinos. Models of Kühn and Santamaria and of Isgur et al. are used to fit distributions of the invariant 3π mass as well as 2π mass projections of the Dalitz plot. The model dependent mass and width of thea 1 resonance are measured to be $$m_{a_1 } = 1.266 \pm 0.014_{ - 0.002}^{ + 0.012} $$ GeV and $$\Gamma _{a_1 } = 0.610 \pm 0.049_{ - 0.019}^{ + 0.053} $$ GeV for the Kühn and Santamaria model and $$m_{a_1 } = 1.202 \pm 0.009_{ - 0.001}^{ + 0.009} $$ GeV and $$\Gamma _{a_1 } = 0.422 \pm 0.023_{ - 0.004}^{ + 0.033} $$ GeV for the Isgur et al. model. The model dependent values obtained for the parity violating asymmetry parameter are γ VA =0.87±0.27 −0.06 +0.05 for the Kühn and Santamaria model and γ VA =1.10±0.31 −0.14 +0.13 for the Isgur et al. model. Within the Isgur et al. model the ratio of theS-andD-wave amplitudes is measured to beD/S=−0.09±0.03±0.01.
