Notes: The size-dependent melting temperature and the size-dependent melting entropy of organic nanocrystals are predicted by use of our simple model being free of any adjustable parameter. The model predictions for the size-dependent melting temperature and the size-dependent melting entropy are supported by the experimental results on benzene, chlorobenzene, heptane, and naphthalene nanocrystals. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We describe a new method, applying molecular beam epitaxial (MBE) growth and microfabrication techniques, to experimentally model nonlinear phenomena. Specifically, we have built a periodically loaded monolithic nonlinear transmission line which has been fabricated on a specially designed MBE GaAs wafer to duplicate a theoretical physics model, the one-dimensional exponential lattice, which was proposed by Toda. An advantage of the current approach over previous lumped element circuits is that it precisely reproduces the physics of the model without depending upon mathematical manipulations and corrections. To accomplish this, the line capacitance and parasitic capacitance were canceled by proper design of the MBE wafer profile. The conditions required to apply this approach to other nonlinear systems have also been studied. The experimentally measured pulse shapes for the Toda soliton system were compared against calculated results, with good agreement. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Single-crystalline Bi nanowires with diameters ranging from 20 to 70 nm were prepared by electrodeposition using nanoporous aluminum oxide membranes rather than the more usual track-etched polycarbonate membranes. X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction investigations revealed that the nanowires are essentially single crystalline and highly oriented. The temperature dependence of zero-field resistance of different diameter nanowires indicated that these Bi nanowires undergo a semimetal–semiconductor transition due to two-dimensional quantum confinement effects. The resistance maximum was observed at 50 K in zero magnetic field for 20 nm Bi nanowires, while the resistance minimum at 258 K for 50 nm Bi nanowires, due to the quantum size effect. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present a study of the morphological and magnetic transformation of hcp(0001) Co thin films, grown via sputtering on Al2O3(112¯0), which occurs when they are annealed in vacuum in the temperature range of 500 °C〈TA〈600 °C. In this temperature range, the films undergo a reentrant smoothening transition. For very thin films (thickness t〈20 nm), this coincides with a fcc(111) to fcc(001) recrystallization, and with the appearance of rectangular pits. For thicker films, the recrystallization does not occur, even though the surface smoothens out leaving hexagonal pits behind. The number of pits per unit area decreases exponentially as the thickness of the film is increased, demonstrating that interactions at the film surface and film–substrate interface cause the smoothening and pit formation during the annealing process. Whereas the hcp(0001) and fcc(111) phases are magnetically isotropic in the film's plane, the fcc(001) films exhibit a biaxial in-plane anisotropy. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The dissociative chemisorption of nitrogen on clean and cesiated Ru(0001) surfaces has been studied using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). N2 (at 300 K) chemisorbs dissociatively with a sticking coefficient of 2×10−6, independent of substrate temperature which was varied between 420 and 700 K. The saturation coverage is found at 0.5 monolayer. The energy of the N–Ru stretching vibration is 71 meV at the bare surface and 69 meV at the cesiated Ru(0001) surface. The activation energy for desorption is about 190 kJ/mol for small coverages. The kinetic data suggest the existence of an activation barrier in the entrance channel of adsorption. Preadsorption of 0.08 monolayer of Cs increases the sticking coefficient only by a factor of 1.3, and the maximum amount of adsorbed N is reduced due to blocking of adsorption sites through Cs.

Notes: The microstructure of high quality Pb-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox single crystals grown by the flux technique has been studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The single crystals have a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of about 90 K as grown; Tc drops to about 83 K after annealing in air at 600 °C. TEM results show that the as-grown crystals exhibit twinning. The twin boundaries were found to be parallel to the (100) and (010) lattice planes. However, upon annealing the twin structure disappeared. This microstructure change is discussed in terms of a possible cause for the Tc decrease in the annealed crystals.

Notes: The morphologic and luminescent behaviors of various 4-(dicyanomethylene)-2methyl-6-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM) containing films have been investigated. This involves pure DCM layers deposited on top of a tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq) layer or positioned between two Alq layer, DCM-doped Alq films, and periodically arranged Alq/DCM multilayer structures. The occurrence over a period of time of aggregation and permeation of DCM molecules at room temperature and at temperatures as low as ∼260 K is found in all the cases studied. Such a phenomenon will result in degradation of related organic light-emitting devices and is closely related to the electric polarity of the DCM molecule. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In order to investigate microscopic steps of ammonia synthesis on Ru surfaces, hydrogen adsorption on a Ru(0001) surface, precovered by atomic nitrogen, has been studied using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). Hydrogen adsorption has been performed with the Ru sample at 90 and 300 K. At 90 K, the saturation coverage of hydrogen decreases with increasing N precoverage. The vibrational properties of H do not change much in the presence of N compared to those on the bare Ru(0001) surface exhibiting one single mode at 85 meV for small H coverages and losses at 99 and 141 meV at H saturation. Heating of the H+N coadsorbed layer from 90 to 300 K does not result in any observable N–H bond formation. After exposure of N/Ru(0001) to H2 at room temperature, however, NH3 and NH species are observed on the surface. NH3 is characterized by its symmetric bending mode δs at 145 meV. The reaction intermediate NH is stable up to 400 K and shows losses of ν(Ru-NH), δ(N–H), and ν(N–H) at 86, 166, and 410 meV, respectively. A barrier height of 93 kJ/mol is estimated for the NH3 synthesis reaction from N and H. In the presence of some coadsorbed Cs, NHx species are not observed at 300 K indicating a destabilization of NHx by Cs. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes:  Allergic asthma is characterized by airway hyper-responsiveness and chronic mucosal inflammation mediated by CD4+ Th2 lymphocytes. Regulatory CD4+CD25+ T cells are important components of the homeostasis of the immune system, as impaired CD4+CD25+ T cell activity can cause autoimmune diseases and allergy. The mechanism of suppression by CD4+CD25+ T cells remains controversial; different in vivo and in vitro studies raise possible roles for the immunosuppressive cytokines interleukin-10 and transforming growth factor-β, forkhead transcription factor Foxp3, glucocorticoid-induced tumor necrosis factor receptor, cytotoxic lymphocyte associated antigen-4, 4-1BB costimulator receptor, a CD4-related molecule LAG-3, and neuropilin-1. Current data suggest that Th2 responses to allergens are normally suppressed by CD4+CD25+ T cells. Suppression by CD4+CD25+ T cells is decreased in allergic individuals. Furthermore, CD4+CD25+ T cells play a key role in regulating airway eosinophilic inflammation. The immunomodulatory properties of CD4+CD25+ T cells do extend to Th2 responses, most notably by limiting the development of a proinflammatory CD4+ Th2 phenotype characterized by reduced cytokine production. An understanding of the roles of CD4+CD25+ T cells in vivo could provide better insight into the design of novel approaches to modulate the chronic airway inflammatory reaction evident in bronchial asthma.

Notes: Background:  The serum soluble cytotoxic T lymphocyte associated antigen-4 (sCTLA-4) concentration is significantly elevated in patients with asthma, and sCTLA-4 concentration correlate with the severity of asthma. The aim of the present study was to investigate effects of allergen inhalation and oral glucocorticoid on concentration of serum sCTLA-4 in patients with allergic asthma. Methods:  Allergen inhalation challenge was conducted in allergic asthmatics with isolated early asthma response and those with dual asthma response. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel group fashion, prednisolone or placebo was give orally once a day for 2 weeks. Venous blood samples were collected before and after allergen inhalation or prednisolone administration for obtaining sera. The serum sCTLA-4 concentrations were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results:  The serum sCTLA-4 concentrations in the dual responder group increased from 29.0 (14.5–43.7) μg/l [median (25–75 percentiles)] before allergen inhalation to 44.0 (24.3–61.3) μg/l 24 h after allergen inhalation. In the isolated early responders, there were no significant increase in serum sCTLA-4 concentrations after allergen inhalation compared with baseline levels. There was a significant decrease in serum sCTLA-4 concentrations after 2 weeks of glucocorticoid therapy [22.0 (15.5–31.0) μg/l] compared with baseline values [37.0 (19.5–53.0) μg/l], whereas there was no significant difference in the placebo group. Conclusion:  This study has demonstrated that serum sCTLA-4 concentrations increased after allergen inhalation in sensitized asthmatic subjects, and that serum sCTLA-4 concentrations were downregulated by prednisolone therapy.
