    Notes: Magnetic relaxation experiments constitute a unique method of determining the nature of fluctuations in dissipative magnetic systems. At high temperatures these fluctuations are thermal and strongly temperature dependent. At low temperatures, where quantum fluctuations dominate, magnetic relaxation becomes independent of temperature. Such behavior has been observed in many systems. In this review we emphasize the study of low temperature relaxation in ferromagnetic nanoparticles, layers, and multilayers (including "domain wall junctions''), and large single crystals. The results of magnetic relaxation experiments are shown to agree with theoretical predictions of quantum tunneling of the magnetization. When dissipation becomes important, in large and complex systems, a time dependent WKB exponent needs to be introduced.

    Notes: Both Nd15Fe77B8 and Sm(CoCu)5 sintered magnets have been reported to exhibit staircase hysteresis loops with giant Barkhausen jumps below about 10 K. The pattern is reproducible at a fixed temperature. Here the observation of heat pulses associated with the magnetization jumps in Nd15Fe77B8 magnets is reported. The origin of these Barkhausen jumps in sintered magnets is discussed as a two-stage trigger/propagation process. The first stage may be dominated by magnetization reversal in volumes of δ3, where δ is the domain-wall thickness, as in the magnetic after effect, whereas the second stage reflects thermally induced domain-wall motion facilitated by the small lattice specific heat below about 10 K.

    Notes: Background We identified 19 patients with facial atopic eczema who failed to respond to tacrolimus (FK506) ointment, although tacrolimus ointment has shown excellent benefit for the treatment of recalcitrant facial erythema in most patients with atopic dermatitis. Objectives We attempted to determine the efficacy of an original lotion formulation of tacrolimus for facial atopic dermatitis resistant to tacrolimus ointment. Patients/methods Recalcitrant facial erythema of these 19 patients was treated with an original tacrolimus lotion preparation for 6 months. Patch testing with white petrolatum was performed in both the 19 patients and in 30 other atopic dermatitis patients who had experienced excellent results with tacrolimus ointment. Results Of the 19 resistant patients, those whose symptoms were greatly or moderately improved by the lotion were 95%, 89% and 89% after 2 weeks, 3 months and 6 months of treatment, respectively. Further, patch testing to petrolatum showed positive reactions in several (six of 19) patients, compared with none of 30 controls with atopic eczema that had responded to topical tacrolimus ointment. Conclusions The tacrolimus lotion had a significant effect on the recalcitrant facial erythema in adult patients with atopic dermatitis who were resistant to tacrolimus ointment. We suggest that one reason for the unresponsiveness to tacrolimus ointment may be because of contact sensitivity to white petrolatum.

    Notes: Magnetization measurements of powder and sintered samples of Ba2Y1Cu3O9−y have been made at 77 K. Excellent critical current densities Jc's of about 3×104 A/cm2 at 10 kOe were estimated for the powder samples, which consisted of single-crystal particles of ∼3 μm in dimension. These Jc's were about two orders of magnitdue larger than those of the sintered sample.

    Notes: We report significant intergrain magnetoresistance (IMR) in polycrystalline double perovskites of SrFe1−x(Mo or Re)xO3 at room temperature. Systematics of the temperature dependence of IMR indicates that the observed large room-temperature IMR in SrFe1/2Mo1/2O3 originates from the ferrimagnetic nature of insulating grain boundaries as well as the half-metallicity of this perovskite. Our results indicate that a new avenue for spin-polarized tunneling junctions is to utilize insulating interface layers with ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic coupling. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Thirty-eight biopsies of prurigo lesions (22 large, mature nodules and 16 smaller, intermediately developed nodules) were obtained from 17 patients with idiopathic prurigo nodularis Hyde who had not been bitten by insects, nor had other underlying diseases. Each biopsy was serially sectioned to reveal its histological structure. In 88% (14/16) of the smaller nodules and in 55% (12/22) of the large ones, a hair follicle was observed in the center of the prurigo lesion. The follicular epidermis and the adjacent surface epidermis showed various degrees of acanthosis and spongiosis. The dermal infiltrates extended from the superficial dermis into the middle dermis in a triangular fashion around the involved hair follicle. It is suggested that idiopathic prurigo nodularis most frequently occurs in connection with a hair follicle.

    Notes: Recent progress in the understanding of the texture formation mechanism in the hydrogenation-disproportionation-desorption-recombination (HDDR) process, improvements of stability with regard to thermal and structural losses, and the state-of-the-art performance of both compression and injection molded magnets made from the newly developed anisotropic HDDR powders are reported. Transmission electron microscopy observations of disproportionated Nd–Fe–Co–Ga–Zr–B alloys have revealed the existence of finely dispersed crystallites of Nd2(Fe,Co,Ga)14B which have a common crystallographic orientation. It is proposed that, upon removal of hydrogen, the hydrogen-disproportionated structure recombines from these crystallites to form textured submicron crystallites of the 2:14:1 phase. Using highly anisotropic HDDR powders, energy products (BH)max exceeding 170 kJ/m3 (21 MGOe) have been obtained on compression-molded resin-bonded magnets and 130 kJ/m3 (16 MGOe) on injection-molded ones. High coercivity HDDR powders with an intrinsic coercivity (HcJ) exceeding 1.27 MA/m (16 kOe) have also been obtained by replacing part of Nd with Dy, which enabled improvement of thermal stability. It is shown that the degradation of magnetic performance of resin-bonded HDDR magnets is prevented by eliminating pore formation during the molding process. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Background The genetic background of atopic eczema might be heterogeneous and there is a possibility that immunoglobulin (Ig)E responsiveness in patients with atopic eczema is controlled separately from the development of atopic eczema. Although both interleukin (IL)-4 and the IL-4 receptor α chain have an important role for IgE production and are therefore possible candidate genes for atopy, it has not been clarified whether these genes play any roles in atopic eczema patients who have normal IgE productivity.Objective We aimed to assess whether the polymorphisms of the IL-4 gene and the IL-4 receptor α chain gene play any roles in atopic eczema patients, particularly in patients who have normal IgE productivity.Method We determined the genotype with regard to polymorphisms in the genes for IL-4 and the IL-4 receptor α chain (− 589C/T of IL-4; Ile50Val, Ala375Glu and Arg551Gln of IL-4 receptor α chain) in patients with atopic eczema using the fluorogenic 5′ nuclease assay.Results IL-4 and the IL-4 receptor α chain genotypes were not significantly associated with either total patients with atopic eczema or atopic eczema patients who had normal IgE productivity. The distribution of genotypes of IL-4–589C/T differed by the serum IgE levels in patients with atopic eczema.Conclusion These results suggest that the polymorphisms in the IL-4 gene and the IL-4 receptor α chain gene play no role in the development of atopic eczema in patients who have normal IgE productivity.

    Notes: Blood eosinophil levels were examined in 200 (100 mild and 100 severe) patients with atopic dermatitis. Eosinophil levels roughly correlated with disease severity. However, the pattern of eosinophilia was not homogeneous. Very high eosinophilia counts were common in severe cases of atopic dermatitis who had a personal or family history of respiratory atopy, while normal or moderately elevated eosinophil values were obtained in severe cases of‘pure’ atopic dermatitis who had neither personal nor family history of respiratory atopy. It is suggested that disease severity and personal or family history of respiratory atopy are important factors in determining high blood eosinophil levels in atopic dermatitis.
