    Notizen: In this paper Kron's primitive composite system matrix is shown to be reducible to a symmetric indefinite matrix. This matrix, although never formed explicitly, can then be transformed to a tridiagonal matrix of reduced order by the Lanczos algorithm. Eigenvalue solutions of this partially tridiagonalized matrix give very good approximations to the eigenvalues of the composite system. The method has multiplication counts which are over 90 per cent lower than when the (condensed) Kron matrix is solved by the Newton-Raphson iteration applied to the Kron scalar equation. Numerical examples illustrating the Kron-Lanczos method when solving for the natural frequencies of frames with large numbers of degrees of freedom are presented.

    Notizen: A methodology is described for the inverse design and/or analysis of coolant flow passage shapes in multiholed internally cooled turbine blades. The user of this technique may specify the temperature (or heat flux) distribution along the aerofoil outer surface. In addition, the temperature on the surface of each of interior coolant flow passages (holes) may be specified. The numerical solution of the outer hot gas flow field determines the remaining unspecified aerofoil outer surface quantity - surface heat flux if temperature was originally specified or vice versa. The position and shape of each turbine blade coolant hole is then found iteratively by solving the heat conduction problem within the solid portions of the blade. This solution procedure involves satisfying the dual Dirichlet and Neumann specified boundary conditions of temperature and heat flux on the outer boundary of the aerofoil. The inner hole geometry is then modified using an optimization procedure in such a way as to minimize the error in satisfying the specified Dirichlet temperature boundary condition on the surface of each of the evolving interior holes. Results are shown for single-hole and double-hole configurations that have analytic solutions and for a realistic turbine blade design problem.

    Notizen: We present a new finite element analysis of the linear dynamic responses of a slender fluid-structure system, namely the elasto-acoustic beam, neglecting flow and viscosity effects. Using one unknown field in the fluid, namely the ‘mass-flow’ corresponding to a cross-section mean value of the longitudinal displacement field component, an original symmetric formulation is derived which does not exhibit the usual spurious modes associated with the irrotationality constraint occurring in displacements formulations of fluid-structure problems.

    Notizen: An examination is made of suppression techniques used to obtain global monotonicity when applying iterative processes to the determination of the zeros of residual functions in linear vibration analysis. It is shown that, when computational errors are taken into account, induced instability is a ubiquitous feature of this class of techniques. A method of inhibiting this instability behaviour is presented which at the same time avoids missing zeros between the restarting value and the last determined zero on restarting the iteration.

    Notizen: In this paper, a simplified, economical and highly accurate method for large deformation, post-buckling, analyses of frame-type structures is presented. Using the concepts of polar-decomposition of deformation, an explicit expression for the tangent stiffness matrix of a member/element of the frame, that accounts for the nonlinear bending-stretching coupling, is derived in closed form, at any point in the load-deformation path. The ranges of validity of the present simplified approach are discussed. Several example problems to demonstrate the feasibility of the present approach, over ranges of deformation that are well beyond those likely to occur in practical large frame structures, are included.

    Notizen: In this paper a class of nonlinear evolution problems is considered. It is shown that, under special conditions, the application of the product approximation method for nonlinear problems in the finite element method results in constant (i.e. time-independent) matrices. In those cases the amount of computing required to solve these equations with an explicit time-stepping algorithm is decreased considerably compared to the standard Galerkin formulation in which the matrices are time-dependent. The method is applied to two practical two-dimensional problems: the shallow water equations and a nonlinear heat conduction problem.

    Notizen: Plates governed by Kirchhoff's equation have been analysed by the boundary integral equation method using the fundamental solution of the biharmonic equation. In the case of supported plates, the boundary conditions permit the uncoupling of the field equation into two harmonic equations that originate, due to the nature of the fundamental solution, easier integration kernels and a simpler system of equations. The calculation of bending and twisting moments and transverse shear force can be formed, combining derivatives of the integral equation which defines the expression of the deflection on any point of the plate. The uncoupling of the biharmonic equation into two Poisson's equations involves the discretization of the domain of the studied problems. Nevertheless, the unknown quantity of the problem does not appear in the domain integrations for which a refined discretization is unnecessary. In the paper, however, a numerical alternative is considered to express the domain integral by means of boundary integrals. In this way, we need only discretize the boundary of the plate, making it necessary to solve a supplementary system of equations in order to calculate the coefficients of the approximation carried out.

    Notizen: Seven infinite ring elements have been proposed for the stress analysis around opening in an infinite medium. All elements employ trigonometrical series for interpolation in the θ-direction and decaying function in the r-direction. Numerical results indicate that all of them can converge for self-equilibrating force systems, but only the element which was derived from the stress function can converge in the non-self-equilibrating external loads. The present study clearly indicates the close relationship between the semi-analytical element and closed-form solution.

    Notizen: An algorithm for reducing the profile and wavefront of a sparse matrix is described. The scheme is applicable to any sparse matrix which has a symmetric pattern of zeros and may be used to generate efficient labellings for finite element grids. In particular, it is suitable for generating efficient labellings for profile and frontal solution schemes. Empirical evidence, obtained from analysis of the 30 test problems collected by Everstine, suggests that the new algorithm is superior to existing methods for profile and wavefront reduction. It is fast, requires only a small amount of memory, and is simple to program.

    Notizen: The objective of this study is to examine the applicability of the boundary element method to analysing a plate on elastic foundation. The fundamental solution of the problem is presented as a Fourier-Bessel integral. For the computation of the values of the fundamental solution an algorithm was developed in which the Fourier-Bessel integral was decomposed into an alternative convergent sequence. Equations based on the direct and indirect boundary element method were derived for a plate situated on a one- or two-parametric elastic foundation. According to the theory presented, computer programs based on the direct and indirect boundary element method were developed. These programs can be used for examining the behaviour of a smooth-boundary plate on a one- or two-parametric elastic foundation. The computer programs were tested by several examples. The results obtained by using a small number of boundary elements compared favourably to the results obtained by a fine finite element mesh. The study shows that the boundary element method is applicable to the analysis of a plate on elastic foundation.

    Notizen: An unconditionally stable algorithm for plane stress elastoplasticity is developed, based upon the notion of elastic predictor-return mapping (plastic corrector). Enforcement of the consistency condition is shown to reduce to the solution of a simple nonlinear equation. Consistent elastoplastic tangent moduli are obtained by exact linearization of the algorithm. Use of these moduli is essential in order to preserve the asymptotic rate of quadratic convergence of Newton methods. The accuracy of the algorithm is assessed by means of iso-error maps. The excellent performance of the algorithm for large time steps is illustrated in numerical experiments.

    Notizen: The kinematics of degenerated finite elements using explicit integration are investigated, in particular for geometric nonlinear applications. Two representations of the nodal rotational degrees-of-freedom are investigated; the first adopts the infinitesimal representation of rotations, while the second uses a valid large rotation representation. A method of explicit integration is presented which satisfies rigid body rotations under arbitrary large rotations. The accuracy and convergence of these formulations are investigated.

    Notizen: Mesh grading of finite element meshes is greatly simplified by allowing two or more finer elements to abut the entire straight or curved edge of a neighbouring coarser element. This paper proposes the technique by which it can be achieved while maintaining inter-element compatibility by introducing modified shape functions. The concepts and potential advantages of this technique are described in detail for two-dimensional isoparametric quadrilateral elements, although the same procedure can also be applied to other element types including three-dimensional. Implementation of this technique to existing finite element programs requires only minimal modifications. Finally, numerical examples are presented to illustrate the application of the mesh grading technique to several wave propagation problems.

    Notizen: To develop geometrically nonlinear, doubly curved finite shell elements the basic equations of nonlinear shell theories have to be transferred into the finite element model. As these equations in general are written in tensor notation, their implementation into the finite element matrix formulation requires considerable effort. The present paper will demonstrate how to derive the nonlinear element matrices directly from the incrementally formulated nonlinear shell equations using a tensor-oriented procedure. This enables the numerical realization of all structural responses, e.g. the calculation of pre- and post-buckling branches in snap-through analysis and especially in bifurcation analysis, including the detection of critical points and the consideration of geometric imperfections. To avoid loss of accuracy care is taken for a realistic computation of the geometric properties as well as of the external loads. Finally, the developed family of shell elements will be presented and its efficiency will be demonstrated by some applications to linear and geometrically nonlinear structural phenomena.

    Notizen: The thermomechanical response of a uniaxial bar with thermoviscoplastic constitution is predicted herein using the finite element method. After a brief review of the governing field equations, variational principles are constructed for the one-dimensional conservation of momentum and energy equations. These equations are coupled in that the temperature field affects the displacements and vice versa. Due to the differing physical nature of the temperature and displacements, first-order and second-order elements are utilized for these variables, respectively. The resulting semi-discretized equations are then discretized in time using finite differencing. This is accomplished by Euler's method, which is utilized due to the stiff nature of the constitutive equations. The model is utilized in conjunction with stress-strain relations developed by Bodner and Partom to predict the axial temperature field in a bar subjected to cyclic mechanical end displacements and temperature boundary conditions. It is found that spacial and time variation of the temperature field is significantly affected by the boundary conditions. The nomenclature used is given in an Appendix.

    Notizen: A new algorithm for solving transient thermal problems in a reduced subspace of the original space of discretization is described. The basis of the subspace is formed by using the system response at the first time step (or an approximation to it) and a set of orthogonal vectors obtained by the algorithm of Lanczos. Derivatives of these vectors are included when treating non-linear cases. The method allows one to handle the sharp gradients that appear in thermally loaded structures, and the response is accurately predicted by using only a small number of degrees of freedom in the reduced system. The algorithm is specially well suited for treating large-scale problems. Examples dealing with one-, two- and three-dimensional cases of linear and non-linear conduction problems are presented.

    Notizen: A new integral method is proposed here to solve the diffusion equation (confined flow) and the Boussinesq equation (unconfined flow) in a two-dimensional porous medium. The method, based on Green's theorem, derives its integral representation from the portion of the original differential equation with the highest space derivatives so that the resulting kernel of the integral representation is not time dependent. Compared to an earlier integral formulation, namely the direct Green function, based on the same theorem, the kernel is simpler so that the present theory provides a more efficient numerical model without compromising accuracy. An iterative scheme is employed along with the theory to achieve solutions to the non-linear Boussinesq equation. Concepts used in the finite difference and finite element methods enable simplification of the temporal derivative. The method is tested with success on a number of numerical examples from groundwater flow.

The method can also be applied to continuous variables. The original formulation leads to a non-linear constrained minimization problem with inequality constraints, which is solved by means of a sequence of approximate problems using dual techniques. In the dual space, the objective function is to be maximized, depends on continuous variables, is concave and has first and second order discontinuities. In addition, the constraints deal simply with restricting the dual variables to be non-negative. To solve the problem an ad hoc algorithm from mathematical programming has been adapted.Some examples have been developed to show the effectiveness of the method.

    Notizen: A finite element method coupled with the method of characteristics is applied to the problem of convective-dispersive transport with non-equilibrium reaction. Convective terms are calculated using moving particles together with influence element meshes for particle tracking, whereas dispersion terms are calculated by means of finite element techniques. The contribution from the term of non-equilibrium reaction is incorporated into the algebraic equations by the use of analytical solutions to the equation of non-equilibrium reaction for each time step and extended Simpson's numerical integrations.Comparison of the numerical results from the proposed procedure with analytical solutions to the simultaneous partial differential equations shows good agreement for the wide spectrum ranging from dispersion- to convection-dominated transport with various reaction parameters.

    Notizen: A method is described for including the effect of shear deformations in existing thin plate finite elements, and thereby extending their range of application to include moderately thick plates. The method does not add extra degrees of freedom to the final element, so the thick and thin plate elements can be used interchangeably, and the thick plate solution is not appreciably more expensive than the thin plate solution.It is assumed that the shear deformations are constant over the element and, to account for this, two extra internal shear strain variables are added to the element. Various methods for eliminating these internal variables are examined but it is shown to be impossible to simultaneously satisfy both the constant bending moment and constant shear patch tests, except for parallelograms. However, one method gives elements which pass the constant shear patch test and, although failing the constant bending moment patch test for arbitrary geometries, gives errors which are small enough to be neglected in most engineering applications.This method has been applied to a triangular plate element and it is shown that the results obtained with this element converge (for all practical purposes) to the correct thick plate results.

    Notizen: This paper is concerned with the effect of material properties, boundary friction, and inertia on the flow and strain patterns in material undergoing large plane strain compression. Experimental results are presented for both the rapid compression of Plasticine and the quasi-static compression of aluminium. In addition, a finite element code for rigid-plastic material behaviour is discussed, and approximate procedures are described for both in-plane and platen friction. Provision in the code was also made for strain hardening and strain rate sensitive material properties, and inertia effects. Comparison of the finite element and experimental results showed good agreement. Finite element calculations revealed that in-plane friction had a very significant effect on the strain patterns observed in the Plasticine experiments. Finite element calculations also showed that strain hardening was of fundamental importance in determining the strain patterns that were observed to occur in the quasi-static compression of aluminium.

    Notizen: The determination of the natural modes of wave propagation in an anisotropic layered medium requires the solution of a transcendental eigenvalue problem that is usually approached numerically with the aid of search techniques. Such computations require great effort. The method presented in this paper provides an alternate solution to this problem in terms of a quadratic eigenvalue problem involving tridiagonal matrices, for which the eigenvalues can be found with great speed and accuracy. The technique is then illustrated by means of an example involving a cross-anisotropic Gibson solid.

    Notizen: A three-noded curved beam element with transverse shear deformation, based on independent isoparametric quadratic interpolations, is designed from field-consistency principles. It is shown that a quadratic element that is field-inconsistent in membrane strain suffers from ‘membrane locking’ - i.e. an error of the second kind propagates indefinitely as the element length to thickness ratio and/or the element length to radius of curvature ratio increase, in nearly inextensional bending. However, field-inconsistency in shear strain does not lead to ‘shear locking’ but degrades its performance to exactly that of a field-consistent linear element. It is also seen that field-inconsistency leads to severe axial force and shear force oscillations. Error estimates for locking are derived, wherever possible, and confirmed by numerical experiments. The field-consistent element offered here is the most efficient quadratic curved beam element possible.

The work complements the similar dynamic stiffness derivations of Reference 2. Numerical results for a beam with substantial taper (c = 1.0) give better than seven figure agreement with the stiffnesses obtained by extrapolation from stepped beams with 400 and 500 uniform elements. A procedure is given for calculating the number of critical buckling loads of a clamped/clamped member that are exceeded by any trial load so that an existing algorithm can be used to obtain the exact critical buckling loads of structures which contain tapered members.

    Notizen: In many practical applications it is desired to describe a surface enclosing a given volume which has to possess a minimum area. Moreover, there are engineering criteria, e.g. the requirement of minimum resistance, which cannot be involved in the present interpolation algorithms of the existing CAD systems. The present paper describes an approach where the surface creation task is formulated as a constrained minimization problem. The pointwise specified co-ordinates are used as boundary conditions. The volume enclosed is a constraint, and the functional under minimization is the surface area. Thus, as the viscous resistance is roughly proportional to the area of the wetted surface, the result approximates the form having minimum viscous resistance. The finite element method is employed and the elements used are C1 continuous isoparametric elements to be able to represent infinite slopes. In the light of applications studied thus far it can be said that the method converges and is thus capable of creating surfaces of minimum area enclosing a given volume.

    Notizen: This paper presents an efficient numerical solution of the quadratic eigenproblem arising in the analysis of gyroscopic systems. Such problems are known to reduce to a generalized linear eigenproblem defined by two real non-singular matrices, one symmetric and one skew-symmetric. For this class of problems, the general Lanczos algorithm for unsymmetric matrices is shown to simplify considerably and yields an efficient solution of the problem. Full advantage can be taken of the sparsity of the matrices and of the specific nature of gyroscopic systems. Numerical examples are presented, which demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the solution procedure.

    Notizen: Low-order triangular finite shell elements are computationally economical and easy to implement, but often exhibit very slow convergence. Two new membrane formulations for triangular shell elements are examined which rectify these drawbacks. The first element is based on the Marguerre shallow shell theory and a strain projection method that eliminates spurious membrane strain energy. Resulting expressions are provided in an explicit form for easy implementation of the element. The second element is based on a linear membrane field governed by normal rotations and reduced quadrature.The difficulties with shell-normal rotations are analysed and a method for omitting these rotations while preserving rigid body motion is presented and tested. Finally, a set of test problems are examined which show the importance of mesh patterns and degrees-of-freedom per node on triangular element performance.

    Notizen: Recently, several methods of time integration of the equations of motion have been proposed. Many of them result in square mass, damping and stiffness matrices. The space-time finite element method is an extension of the FEM, familiar to most engineers, over the time domain. A special approach enables the use of triangular, tetrahedral and hyper-tetrahedral elements in time and space. By special division of the space-time layer the triangular matrix of coefficients in the system of equations can be obtained. A simple algorithm enables the storage of non-zero coefficients only. Dynamic solution requires a small amount of the memory compared to other methods, and ensures considerable reduction of arithmetic operations. The method presented is also efficient in solving both linear and non-linear problems. Matrices for a beam and plane stress/strain element are derived. Exemplary problems solved by the method described have proved the effectiveness of the application of triangular and tetrahedral space-time elements in vibration analysis.

Then two stratagems are given for the use of the algorithm in concurrent machines where the number of processing elements is less than required to factor the matrix in as few serial steps as possible, and where uniformly high efficiency is expected from all processing elements. Expressions are given for the efficiency factor e appearing in the speed-up expression g = eN, and these are specialized for the N node hypercube machine as a function of partition size s, the number N of processing elements of the hypercube machine, and the cost μ of interelement transmission relative to computation. It is shown that efficiency factor e is inversely proportional to μ/s, and that e is almost independent of N when N is large and μ/s = 0. The task is completed in n/s serial steps with no limit on n. The half bandwidth b of the matrix is 2Ns.

    Notizen: In static force-deflection applications of the finite element method, convergence rates for the p-version, in which the polynomial degree of element interpolation functions is increased while the mesh remains fixed, are superior to those for the h-version, in which the element degree remains fixed while the mesh is refined so that element size approaches zero. In structural dynamics applications, one does not seek to approximate a single solution, as in static applications, but seeks estimates for a number of the lower system eigenvalues. This paper identifies factors responsible for poorer accuracy in higher computed eigenvalues. In addition, it explains why the p-version of the finite element method can be expected to exhibit significantly better eigenvalue convergence than the h-version. Numerical examples demonstrate the superiority of the p-version over the h-version. They also show the effects of various mechanisms limiting eigenvalue convergence.

    Notizen: The value of the permissible pressure in torispherical heads is usually judged from the size of the permanent deformations after the first load cycle. The difficulty always lies in the determination of the maximum permanent strain caused by the pressure, as the strain depends on the changes of the elastic-plastic state. The elastic-plastic state of the heads can be, for example, found and well followed by the finite element method. Values obtained in this way are naturally valid only for the case examined. However, by extending the numerical investigations and by appropriately processing and evaluating the results certain regularities and generalizations can be recognized. On this basis certain approximations can be made, leading to a very simple and reliable calculation process.

    Notizen: The quality of solution obtained using the boundary element method (BEM) is dependent on how the boundary is discretized. This is particularly true in domains of complex geometry. A rule for grid optimization for the BEM is derived on the bases of an asymptotic measure of the boundary element error that preserves the number of elements (degrees of freedom). Three example problems are provided to show the advantages of grid optimization in terms of accuracy and cost.

    Notizen: A modification of the dynamic relaxation method is proposed which facilitates static analysis of non-linear problems. Continuous loading in time is adopted instead of the ordinary step function of time. Inertia and damping forces arising during the loading process are kept at a minimum using an optimum load time history. This results from the stationary condition of an appropriate functional. The equation of motion is included as a subsidiary condition. Continuous load - deflection curves can be obtained. An incremental solution is avoided. Application of the method is extremely simple. Existing programs based on explicit time integration schemes can be easily adapted for it. Sample solutions are presented.

    Notizen: The advantages in formulation and use of semi-discretized approaches to the numerical solution of initial/boundary value problems are well known. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that it is feasible to obtain accurate results even with a coarse spatial mesh. A method is developed which produces in a simple manner matrix representations for high-order central difference operators. Dirichlet, Neumann and mixed boundary conditions are considered, both homogeneous and non-homogeneous. It is shown in all cases that, for linear problems at least, there is no need to use a finer mesh than that dictated by the essential frequency content of the initial function data.

For each time step the stress is found as the projection in complementary energy of the elastic stress onto the set of plastically admissible stresses, while the velocity field is the extremal of a non-quadratic functional. Explicit formulas for von Mises' yield criterion with mixed hardening are developed and the nonlinear equations arising from finite element discretization are solved, for comparison, by a number of Newton-type iteration procedures with line search and are-length control. A few numerical examples with proportional and non-proportional loading are analyzed.

    Notizen: A finite element procedure for solving multidimensional phase change problems is described. The algorithm combines a temperature formulation with a finite element treatment of the differential equation and discontinuous integration within the two-phase elements to avoid the necessity of regularization. A new criterion for the computation of the iteration matrix is proposed. It is based on a quasi-Newton correction of the Jacobian matrix for conduction problems without change of phase. A set of test problems with exact solution is analysed and demonstrates that the procedure can accurately evaluate the front position and temperature history with a reasonable computational effort.

    Notizen: Modal synthesis is a method of formulating the equations of motion for complex vibratory systems. This approach has many advantages in modelling systems that consist of an assembly of linear dynamic elements whose modal characteristics are given. Presented in the paper is a procedure for synthesizing linear dynamic models into one dynamic description in a numerically stable way. This task is achieved by an orthogonal co-ordinate transformation replacing the matrix inversions required when other procedures are used. The modal synthesis approach is formulated as a problem of finding the equations of motion for a linear system subject to a set of linear constraints. The numerical procedure to generate the equations of motion in terms of independent co-ordinates is presented. The paper concludes with several examples that demonstrate the properties of the proposed method and its application to the modelling of vibratory systems.

    Notizen: As an effort to predict effectively the actual collapse load of a structure, a series of numerical studies on the stability of shell structures are made. The difference in formulation between the two types of linear buckling loads, the classical and the fully linearized, is first demonstrated. Their correlations with respect to the actual stability limit of the structure are compared, and finally the two types of critical load approximations are obtained at various stages of a nonlinear analysis to study the pattern of convergence to the actual collapse load. It is found that the fully linearized buckling analysis, when combined with nonlinear analysis, can serve as a useful tool for prediction of the stability limit of a structure. While for most types of structures the approximation is within engineering accuracy, the rate of convergence of the extrapolated critical load also gives some insight to the accuracy of the approximation.

    Notizen: A very efficient technique is presented to model the effects of radiation damping in the computation of added mass for the dynamic analysis of submerged structures. The structure is assumed to be surrounded by an infinite, incompressible and inviscid fluid field and the effect of the free surface is neglected. The technique is implemented in the finite element analysis of two-dimensional problems, assuming pressure to be the nodal unknown. The implementation procedure is quite simple and the symmetrical and banded form of the matrix of coefficients remains unchanged. With the use of the proposed radiation condition, the fluid field may be truncated at a relatively very short distance from the solid - fluid interface. This results in great computational advantages. Furthermore, a guideline is suggested for the selection of the geometry and the location of the truncation boundary to enhance the computational efficiency. The effectiveness and efficiency of the technique is demonstrated by analysing several cases for different geometries of the solid - fluid interface and the truncation boundary.

    Notizen: A fast vectorized algorithm is presented for a sparse matrix-vector multiply. It can be used when the matrix, A, can be represented as a multiplitting, A = ∑Ae. In particular, it can be applied to a matrix-vector multiply arising in finite element techniques where the matrices Ae are associated with the individual element contributions to the global matrix A. The algorithm presented here uses a data structure which is based on the individual matrices Ae and can be applied both to symmetric and to non-symmetric matrices. This algorithm would be attractive for vector architecture similar to either the CYBER 205 or the CRAY and has been implemented for both regular and irregular finite element grids on the CYBER 205. Execution times and storage requirements are compared to standard sparse and band matrix-vector multiply algorithms.

In the analysis the exact field transfer matrix is derived from the solution of the fundamental equation of the three-dimensional curved beam theory. The transfer matrix is given by combining this field transfer matrix and the point transfer matrix. The analysis derives the frequency equation which is applicable to coil springs of general shape. Numerical calculations have been carried out for hyperboloidal springs and barrel springs. Experimental tests also have been carried out to verify the present results.

The formulation is based on membrane shell theory, using the total Lagrangian description and simple constitutive relations, which include elastic, plastic and creep effects.The method of lines is used in the computational algorithm to separate variables. The algorithm involves two steps: first the initial value problem in load-time is considered, then the boundary problem is solved by finite differences. A numerical procedure to study the inverse metal forming problem is developed.The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is illustrated by several examples.

    Notizen: A posteriori error estimates and adaptive mesh refinements are now on a rigorous mathematical foundation for linear, elliptic boundary-value problems of second order. Yet, for non-linear problems only a few results have been obtained till now. In this paper we consider as a non-linear model problem the two-dimensional fluid flow with free surface and show how results from linear a posteriori theory can be used to control the non-linear iteration and to refine the mesh adaptively. A numerical example shows that, similar to linear problems, considerable improvement of the accuracy is obtained by an adaptive mesh refinement and that the influence of singularities on the order of convergence disappears.

The scheme is applied to a pin insulator in open space. The results are in close agreement with those of an established technique for modelling field problems.     Notizen: Early attempts to derive curved beam and shell elements in a curvilinear system were dramatically unsuccessful. This was wrongly attributed to the failure of these elements to recover strain-free rigid body displacement modes in a curvilinear co-ordinate description. Recent evidence points to a ‘membrane locking’ phenomenon that arises when constrained strain fields corresponding to inextensional bending are not ‘consistently’ recovered. This accounts for, more completely and precisely, the failure of such elements.In this paper, a simple linear two-noded C0 continuous thick curved beam element based on a curvilinear deep shell theory is derived free from shear and membrane locking. Lack of consistency in the shear and membrane strain-field interpolations in their constrained physical limits (Kirchhoff and inextensional bending limits, respectively) causes very poor convergence due to locking and severe spurious oscillations in stress predictions. Error estimates for these are made and verified. Field-consistent strain interpolations remove these errors and produce the most efficient linear element possible.

    Notizen: The accuracies of the computed temperatures of a liquid in a corner region under freezing conditions are compared for various fixed-grid finite element techniques using the analytical solution for this problem as a reference.In the finite element formulation of the problem different time-stepping schemes are compared: the implicit Euler-backward algorithm combined with an iterative scheme and two three-time-level methods - the Lees algorithm and a Dupont algorithm, which are both applied as non-iterative schemes.Furthermore, different methods for handling the evolution of latent heat are examined: an approximation method suggested by Lemmon and one suggested by Del Giudice, both using the enthalpy formulation as well as a fictitious heat-flow method presented by Rolph and Bathe.Results of calculations performed with the consistent heat-capacity matrix are compared with those performed with a lumped heat-capacity matrix.

    Notizen: Finite element and boundary element methods are described for predicting high-frequency electromagnetic heating of tissue as a cancer therapy. For the class of clinical problems of interest, the patient is electrically inhomogeneous and best discretized by finite elements, but the unbounded nature of practical source configurations calls for a boundary element approach. A hybrid is introduced which couples the two methods and is superior in algebraic requirements to either method alone. The formulation is three-dimensional and allows exact satisfaction of the electromagnetic jump conditions at interfaces separating distinct tissue types. Test cases show its validity for transverse magnetic and electric situations with known solutions. Examples of clinical applications are shown.

    Notizen: The small-displacement free vibration of elastic Euler-Bernoulli beams subjected to non-uniform axial forces and the buckling of elastic columns are both analysed by means of various types of beam finite elements. The procedure incorporates beams and columns of varying cross-sections, such as linear tapers, inhomogeneous beams and columns, distributed axial forces, elastic end and interior restraints and point masses with linear and rotary inertias. All of these topics individually or in some combinations have been analysed by others. The purpose of this paper is to bring together under a single umbrella the various problems studied by others, and to provide the solution to one problem apparently not yet solved - the buckling and vibration of tapered columns under non-uniform axial thrust. The mass, stiffness and geometric stiffness matrices for the standard beam element are fully written out for direct incorporation into existing finite element programs. A FORTRAN subroutine for generating these matrices, and those for various higher-order beam elements, is also provided.
