    Notes: Roothaan-Hartree-Fock (RHF) calculations are carried out for the ground states of the atoms from helium to xenon using a minimal basis set of Slater-type functions whose principal quantum numbers are allowed to take variationally optimal noninteger values. The resulting energies are substantially superior to those obtained previously under the usual restriction that principal quantum numbers be positive integers. The energy lowering relative to the single-zeta wave functions of Clementi and co-workers ranges from 0.0066 Eh in He to 11.2 Eh in Xe. Our results are superior to those obtained by Höjer using a minimal basis set of unconventional binomially screened basis functions. Noninteger principal quantum numbers benefit d-orbitals the most; physically realistic negative d-orbital energies are obtained in all cases including those transition-metal atoms for which a conventional single-zeta STF basis leads to positive d-orbital energies. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: An ab initio study on the reaction of the ground state (3D) and the excited state (1D) of Sc+ with methane was performed. Reaction channels on the singlet and triplet potential surface (PES) and the reaction mechanism are examined and discussed. Three regions of the potential surface was studied: the molecular complex, the C(SINGLE BOND)H insertion products, and the transition states for the reaction. Comparisons between singlet and triplet PESs show that the excited state (1D) of Sc+ has more reactivity with methane than does the ground state (3D) due to the spin quantum number conservation with the more stable insertion intermediate. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The importance of the hybridization displacement charge (HDC) in describing molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) maps was demonstrated by studying six molecules; pyrazine N-oxide, para-nitropyridine, 5-nitropyrimidine, 3-nitropyridazine, N2, and N2O. It is shown that continuously distributed HDC-corrected Löwdin charges reproduce the MEP features of these molecules, most of which have competing electrophilic sites, in agreement with ab initio results. Further, it is found that for homonuclear diatomic molecules MEP minima can be located properly using HDC-corrected Löwdin (or HDC-corrected Mulliken) continuously distributed charges, but these features cannot be obtained using the conventional Löwdin (or Mulliken) charges. It was shown that the order of molecular electric field (MEF) values near the different electrophilic sites becomes changed when one moves away from the molecules. Thus, pyridine-type nitrogen atoms are the preferred binding sites close to the molecules, while at large distances, effects of oxygen atoms of the NO groups become dominant. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Some types of atomic vibrations in a chain of the DNA type constructed of G-C pairs were studied. These are the atomic vibrations of the lateral groups of guanine and N(3)H(1)H(2) of cytosine connected by the hydrogen bond h-b-1 and the vibrations of the centers of masses of bases in the direction parallel to bonds h-b-i, i = 1-3. The vibrations mix partially due to the dependence of the energy of the bond h-b-1 on its length and split into two bands because of the interaction between neighboring base pairs. It was shown that the excitation of the bond h-b-1 results in the splitting off of the two local vibrations and in a small deformation of the chain in the vicinity of the pair with the localized hydrogen bond. The law of the dispersion of band vibrations, values of the split-off frequencies, and degree of poly(dG)-poly(dC) chain deformation were determined. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Simple molecular orbital calculations are employed in searching electronic parameters which may characterize the chemical carcinogens. Using frontier orbitals, the carcinogen-DNA bond formation is described as an electron transfer from the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of DNA to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the carcinogen. Analysis of the DNA bases units shows that the electron donation occurs preferentially at the guanine site. The calculated low LUMO energy of several carcinogens indicate correctly the electrophilic character of these compounds. The difference between the carcinogen and the ultimate carcinogen is analyzed. Epoxides, free radicals, alkylating agents, and other metabolite forms are studied. A reasonable correlation is found between the LUMO energy and the carcinogenic function. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The Gaussian expansions of the generalized relativistic effective core potential (GRECP) components are reported for elements Hg through Rn. The accuracy of the analytical GRECPs is estimated by calculations of atomic transition energies with the numerical one-configurational wave functions in comparison with Dirac-Fock calculations. The results of the corresponding calculations with the RECPs of other groups are also given. An “averaged error” in the reproduction of the transition energies without the change of the occupation number of the 5d-shell is an order of magnitude smaller than that for the RECPs of other groups. As is demonstrated for the transitions with the change of the occupation number of the 5d-shell in mercury, the largest absolute error of the GRECP is only 1.5-2 times smaller than that of the energy-adjusted pseudopotential (PP) or the RECP of Ross et al. with the same space of explicitly treated electrons. However, the dispersion of these errors is 19⋅10-4 au for the energy-adjusted PP, 35⋅10-4 au for the RECP of Ross et al. and only 4⋅10-4 au for the GRECP. One-configurational spin-averaged calculations of the molecular properties for HgH and HgH+ are carried out and compared with the corresponding results of Häussermann et al.   © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: Molecular dynamics simulations of liquid formamide(HCONH2) were carried out using the GROMOS software. The formamide molecule is represented by all of its atoms with all internal degrees of freedom. In contrast to other simulations dealing with bulk properties, this study focuses on the interface liquid-vacuum for the first time.     Notes: The H2 interaction with the Pd dimer and trimer were studied using multiconfigurational self-consistent field (MC-SCF) calculations with the relativistic effective core potential (RECP); the correlation energy correction was included in the extended multireference configuration interaction (MRCI), variational and perturbative to second order. Here, we considered the Pd2 first six states: 3Σ+u, 1Σ+g, 3Πg, 3Δxy, 1Σ+u, and 3Σ+g. For them, the four geometrical approaches included were the side-on H2 toward Pd2, for the hydrogen molecule in and out the Pd dimer plane; the perpendicular end-on H2 toward Pd2; and the perpendicular end-on Pd2 to H2. The Pd2 ground state is 3Σ+u, which only captures H2 in the C2v end-on approach, softly relaxing the H(SINGLE BOND)H bond. The closed-shell 1Σ+g captures the H2 molecule in all the approaches considered: The side-on approach of this state presents deep wells and relaxes the H(SINGLE BOND)H bond, and the end-on approach captures H2 with a relatively longer H(SINGLE BOND)H distance and also a deep well. The 3Πg state was the only one which did not capture H2. For the triangular Pd3 clusters, H2 was approached in the C2v symmetry in and out of the Pd3 plane. In the triangular case, H2 was absorbed in both spin states, with deep wells and relaxing the H(SINGLE BOND)H distance. The linear Pd3 singlet and triplet states capture outside of the Pd3 and break the H(SINGLE BOND)H bond. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: We presented a calculation of the total and partial decay widths of vibrational predissociation (VP) of the HeI2 molecule for low initial vibrational excitations from the lowest van der Waals (vdW) state with total angular momentum J = 0. A time-dependent golden rule wave-packet method was employed in our numerical calculations for the decay widths. The computed total decay widths, lifetimes, and rates of VP are in fairly good agreement with those extrapolated from the experimental data available. Predicted total decay widths as a function of initial vibrational levels exhibit a highly nonlinear behavior. These results demonstrate that a quantum mechanical decay mode for low vibrational excitation remains as well. The total propagation time needed in the time-dependent golden rule wave-packet calculations is much shorter than is the lifetime of the predissociation of HeI2. It is shown that the final-state interaction between the fragments is important for determining the final rotational-state distribution (partial decay width). We find that the major peak position in the final rotational-state distribution shifts to lower rotational energy levels with increase of the initial vibrational quantum number, which is evidently different from that for higher vibrational levels. This fact can be clearly explained by the dependence of the amount of kinetic energy released to the product degrees of freedom on the initial vibrational state. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: An extension to the theory of Schrödinger equations has been made which enables the derivation of eigenvalues from a consideration of a very small part of geometric space. The concomitant unwanted continuum effects have been removed. The theory enables very convergent or “superconvergent” calculations. In the case of the helium ground state, E=-2.90372437703411987 Eh was obtained from 251 terms. The result is comparable to that from the largest variation calculations so far carried out reinforced by extrapolation techniques. The theory is extensible to atoms and molecules irrespectively of the number of electrons or nuclear centers.     Notes: We calculate the resonant and antibound state energies for a Morse potential with a centrifugal barrier using Siegert boundary conditions. Starting with a complex wave number k (purely imaginary for bound and antibound states), we integrate numerically from the origin up to a matching point using Numerov's method. The inward integration is performed using the corresponding (first-order) Riccati equation. The complex eigenvalues are found by matching the two logarithmic derivatives. We find narrow shape resonances within the well, above the dissociation limit, and broad resonances above the centrifugal barrier. Antibound states are found even with J = 0. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Numerical experiments with a nonlinear (λχ4) oscillator which has its harmonic frequency changing randomly with time reveal certain interesting features of its dynamics of quantum evolution. When λ = 0, the level populations are seen to oscillate. But, as the nonlinear coupling is switched on (λ 〉 0), a threshold is reached at λ = λc when the evolution is seen to be characterized by an abrupt transition dominantly to the highest available state of the unperturbed (initial) oscillator. It is shown that this transition probability is maximized at a particular value of λ. The time threshold for this transition decreases with increasing nonlinear coupling strength. The numerically obtained structures of the underlying quantum-phase spaces of the linear and nonlinear random oscillators are examined. Possible use of these results in a problem of chemical origin is explored. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Testosterone (17β-hydroxy-4-androsten-3-one) was studied by the semiempirical AM1 and PM3 and ab initio STO-3G*, 3-21G*, and 6-31G* methods. The goals were to compare those methods and to know the electronic structure of the hormone. Full geometry optimization was performed, and two crystal conformers (T1 and T2), and experimental dipole moment in solution were used for comparison. One conformer with a dipole moment similar to the solvated conditions was generated. Total energy, entalphies, dipole moments, charges, electrostatic potentials, and highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) were calculated. Root-mean-square (RMS) index of the theoretical molecules against T1 and T2 showed best results with the 3-21G* and 6-31G* methods, while AM1 gave better energies than PM3. Dipole moments were directed toward the OH group and the botton face of the A ring. The frontier orbitals were located along the C4-C5 π bond, particularly the LUMO was split between C4 and C5, predicting the action of enzymes at C5 yielding to 5α and 5β-reduced androgens. Electrostatic potentials might be also of biological importance since they are coincidental with the dipole-moment orientation. Finally, it is interesting that the solvatedlike conformer, its properties, and the OH group laid between the same group of T1 and T2 and with a total energy between the crystals and the gas phase or in vacuo conditions. This results might also explain the biology of testosterone and use them to model the hormone-receptor interaction. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Restricted geometry optimizations at the ab initio SCF level with the 3-21G basis set were employed to investigate the conformation space of flavone acetic acid (FAA) and its related compounds. All the conformations are produced from a conformation which is, according to our previous work, probably the active conformation in terms of antitumor activity shown by these compounds. Detailed studies on FAA were carried out while only brief discussions are made on the analogs. The main results obtained are that (1) FAA is a very flexible molecule, e.g., with the energy barrier up to about 3 kcal mol-1 from the reference conformation, the important torsional angle τ1 can change from 27.0° to 117.0°, τ2 from -168.0° to 2.0°, and τ3 from -50.0° to 30.0°; (2) the hydrogen-bonding effect plays an important role in determining lower-energy conformations; (3) among all the FAA conformations considered, some are active and some are inactive; (4) it seems that the analogs will have similar behavior to FAA when the torsional angle τ3 is restricted to the values which are around the equilibrium values; and (5) the hypothesis put forward previously has been further developed in this work. Now, we postulate that efficient charge transfers will lower the energy and that proper charge transfers will activate the molecule. There are mainly two different types of charge transfer corresponding to two different types of conformation, which are specified in this article. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: We compare geometry configurations, vibrational properties, and electronic structures of (HF)2 in a free state and inside argon atom shells Arn. For the first stage, molecular dynamics calculations for the (HF)2 · Ar62 heterocluster are performed with the help of model potentials HF(SINGLE BOND)HF, Ar(SINGLE BOND)Ar, and Ar(SINGLE BOND)HF. Then, ab initio quantum chemistry analysis is carried out for the smaller systems (HF)2 · Ar15 and (HF)2 · Ar6 when keeping the argon atoms closest to the trapped dimer. We conclude that the hydrogen-bonded complex (HF)2 gains some extra stability inside the argon shells, originating primarily from a decrease of intermolecular distance RFF. Electronic structure calculations are in accord with the changes in dynamical properties, namely, a noticeable increase in the vibrational frequency assigned to the F(SINGLE BOND)F stretching mode (+25 cm-1) and decrease in rms deviations for the corresponding coordinate δFF. In addition to these changes, the argon atoms of the nearest solvent shell donate a small fraction of electron charge which is spent for an increase of population of the antibonding orbital σ*Hf(SINGLE BOND)Ff of the free monomer unit and shift orbital energies primarily of the lone-pair fluorine species. These shifts are greater than the changes due to geometry alterations and the possible inaccuracies of the calculation scheme. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: An analysis of the anisotropic Heisenberg model is carried out by solving the Bethe ansatz solution of the model numerically as a function of the anisotropy parameter for finite N. A brief introduction to the limit of the infinite chain is presented. The energy for a few special limiting cases of the anisotropy parameter in the Hamiltonian are worked out. Numerical results for finite cycles as well as for the infinite chain are given. Comparison can then be made with the case of finite increasing N. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: An efficient expansion method for the evaluation of VB matrix elements is introduced. The overlaps of VB wave functions of N electrons can be treated as algebrants, i.e., generalized determinants, of N × N matrices. An algebrant can be expanded with subalgebrants of lower orders in a successive way. By choosing Rumer spin bases and appropriately arranging the expansion, it is found that the number of unique subalgebrants involved in the expansion increases in a quite moderate way with N. In contrast to the traditional symmetric group approach, which explicitly utilizes all N! representation matrices, the new strategy incorporates the group theoretical factors in a simple way in the successive expansion. As only the unique subalgebrants are further expanded, the computational effort required by the new strategy scales in a very acceptable manner with the increasing number of electrons. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: The mechanism and kinetics for the decomposition of β-hydroxypropaldehyde, primary and secondary β-hydroxyketones, were studied by using ab initio RHF/6-31G and RHF/6-31G* methods. The activation barriers of these reactions were refined to be 39.57, 40.10, and 36.80 kcal mol-1 at the MP2/ /RHF/6-31G* level, respectively. The calculated results show that each decomposition is a concerted process with hydrogen transferring and bond breaking via a six-membered cyclic transition state. The thermal rate constants of the decomposition of primary and secondary β-hydroxyketones were obtained by calculating microcanonical probability fluxes through each transition state. It is theoretically confirmed that methyl substitution at the hydroxyl carbon of β-hydroxyketones causes a small enhancement in rates. The theoretical investigations of the mechanism and the rate constants are in agreement with the experimental results. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The method of o(4, 2) operator replacements is generalized. As a result, the series whose limiting values when the variable goes to  +∞ should correspond to the two-electron atom energies now have rational coefficients. This generalization allows one also to compute the series for the case of singlet S symmetry, a case which could not be considered in the previous original formulation of the method. Series with rational coefficients for the helium singlet and triplet S ground-state energy are calculated up to order 41 and 45, respectively. Moreover, symbolic computations also allow one to give the first few coefficients of these series for arbitrary values of the nuclear charge Z. Finally, a new method for analytic continuation to the limit  +∞ is presented for the energies of the helium singlet and triplet ground states.   © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: A few simple atom-transfer reactions (i.e., Ȧ+X-A→A-X+Ȧ) are studied by quantum mechanical ab initio methods. Emphasis is given to the detailed analysis of density matrices rather than to the energetics. Results reveal that during these reactions a small free valence always develops on the migrating atom at the transition state. The barriers in these reactions arise from the greater extent of bond cleavage in the reactant than that of bond formation in the transition state. Analysis of bond orders estimated from bond lengths using Pauling's relation also leads to the fact that the bond-cleavage process is more advanced than is the bond-formation process in these reactions.   © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: The problem of evaluating the radial electron-electron distribution function P0(r12) from the spin-free 2-particle density matrix P(2)(r1, r2Ir'1, r'2) is considered in detail. The analysis is first applied to 2-electron S-type functions built from l2 configurations. For the special case l = 0, the expression for P0(r12) reduces to the result obtained by Coulson and Neilson.For non-spherically symmetric states of N-electron atoms, the angular integrations are handled by a procedure used by Calais and Löwdin in their evaluation of atomic integrals containing functions of r12. Consideration is also given to the evaluation of necessary radial integrals.

    Notes: A simple semi-theoretical expression for β, the core resonance integral as used in the semi-empirical π-èlectron calculations has been proposed. β's for some standard C = C and C = 0 lengths have been evaluated with the proposed formula and the calculated values are compared with those obtained by other semi-theoretical and empirical methods. Electronic spectra of ethylene, formaldehyde, trans-butadiene and benzene have been calculated by a Pariser-Parr-like semi-empirical method with the values of β thus obtained. The calculated spectra are found to be in good agreement with the observed ones.

    Notes: The variation perturbation method in the coupled Hartree-Fock (HF) scheme has been used to calculate the fourth-order energies of He, Li+ and Be2+ ions subjected to a uniform external electric field. The hyper-polarizabilities γh which are related to the fourthorder energies have been calculated neglecting intra-atomic correlation. For He the observed value is γh = 53.6 ± 4.0 a.u. The present estimate in the coupled and uncoupled HF schemes yield 36.2 and 45.3 a.u. respectively. The other calculations using correlated ground state wave function gave values in the range 42-44 a.u. The discrepancies between our result and those of others have been discussed.

    Notes: The separated electron pair (SEP) model (strongly orthogonal geminals) and methods for its systematic extension have been applied to three different localization schemes for C≡O. The optimum SEP wave function is obtained for the particular localization scheme that involves three equivalent bent bonds. The major corrections to the SEP model arise from one-electron transfer terms. Two-electron transfer terms were important only for those pairs that were not well localized. It was found that the separate definitions of the total intrapair and interpair correlation energies did not depend strongly on the choice of localization scheme.

    Notes: The ground state H—H+ and H—H interactions are used as model interactions for investigating the feasibility of using Gaussian basis sets for representing charge overlap effects in intermolecular forces. The non-expanded charge-induced dipole energy and the non-expanded dipole-dipole dispersion energy, respectively, for these interactions are calculated using two types of Gaussian basis functions to represent the first order wave function, Ψ(1). Very good results for these interaction energies, which include charge overlap effects, are obtained for all interatomic separations by using small Gaussian basis sets to represent the interaction, that is Ψ(1), and/or the isolated atoms (the zeroth order wave function).

    Notes: The valence electron distributions of the hydrogen-bonded systems C4H4NH … NC5H5 formed from pyrrole and pyridine and C4H4N- … HNC5H+ from pyrrole anion and pyridinium ion have both been investigated using the charge iterative extended Hückel method. The results are presented in the form of contour diagrams showing the charge densities in pertinent sections of the hydrogen-bonded systems, and also in the corresponding parts of the non-interacting constituent molecules. The density differences between interacting and non-interacting systems brought about by hydrogen bonding are also presented. Like earlier investigated hydrogen bond types, an N—H … N bond is characterized by an increase of charge density in the covalent N—H bond, and a decrease at the acceptor atom. The formation of a rather low maximum in the centre of the H … N bond is also observed. The hydrogen bonding interaction causes a transfer of charge to the donor molecule of the same order of magnitude in both systems considered.

Contrary to previous investigations which have considered only one particle perturbations, two particle perturbation operators are considered. Expressions for the first-order density matrix and first- and second-order energy corrections are obtained. A diagram formulation of the complete perturbation expansion is presented.The results are applied to the treatment of the intermolecular interaction problem. The interaction energy is represented as a sum of several contributions: Coulomb, exchange, resonance, polarization and exchange repulsion. A semi-empirical version of the theory is suggested which explicitly involves all the physically significant energy terms and may be useful for the investigation of complex systems.

    Notes: The electronic structure and preferred conformations of F3P·BH3 and F2HP·BH3 are investigated in the framework of the CNDO/2 approximation. In complete agreement with microwave data, the staggered conformations are predicted to be the most stable ones. The barriers to internal rotation are in good agreement with experimental values (F3P·BH3: calc. = 3.03 kcal/mole, exp. = 3.24 ± 0.15 kcal/mole; F2HP·BH3: calc. = 3.63 kcal/mole, exp. = 4.05 ± 0.45 kcal/mole) and a bicentric energy partitioning shows that the variations of the total energy are completely reflected by the only variation of the interaction energy between phosphorus and H atoms bonded to boron. The analysis of the electron densities reveals the importance of the 3s(P) → 2px(B) transfer in the formation of the co-ordination. Finally, the computed dipole moment value and direction agree with corresponding experimental data.

From this data values of 〈χ〉 and 〈σ〉, for which nuclear motion due to zero-point vibration and centrifugal stretching is taken into account, are calculated at 300°K. These averages are 〈χ〉 = -0.3902 α2ao3 and 〈σ〉 = 1.096 × 10-5 c.g.s. units which are approximately 3.1% and 1.4% respectively, smaller than the equilibrium values.

    Notes: The molecular-electronic structure of the metal phthalocyanines (Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) has been determined by the molecular orbital treatment. Coulomb integrals of the metal atom occurring in the secular determinants have been approximated equivalent to the valence state ionization energy (VSIE) of a metal orbital for a particular charge configuration. The calculated π-electron charge densities have been found to be higher on the nitrogen atoms as compared to the other atoms in the molecule. This is in agreement with the e.s.r. studies of the metal phthalocyanines. To test the correctness of the molecular orbital calculations, the π-π* transitions (14,000 cm-1 - 30000 cm-1), d-d* transitions (20000 cm-1 - 60000 cm-1) and charge transfer transitions (15000 cm -1 - 30000 cm-1) have been calculated in the metal phthalocyanine molecules. The calculated frequencies have been compared with the observed ones and found in fair agreement.

    Notes: An exact cluster expansion of many electron wave functions is derived, beginning with a finite linear combination of Slater determinants rather than the more usual single determinant. This general cluster expansion is found to apply both in the case where all possible Slater determinants from a finite set of spin orbitals are included in the linear combination, and in the case where the number of determinants is restricted.The special properties of that finite linear combination of determinants closest to the exact wave function in the least squares sense are studied. These properties lead to the derivation of a general correlated wave functions method, illustrating again the close relationship between methods of this type and cluster expansion theory. Additional approximations, necessary for practical calculations, are set out.

    Notes: A one center method, based on the work of Karplus and Kolker, is discussed and used to calculate the induction energy, through O(R-8), for the H(ls) - H+ interaction employing two types of Gaussian basis sets constructed from functions of the form {rje-αr2}. The effective hydrogen atom excitation energies and transition multipole moment matrix elements generated in these calculations are used to calculate the dispersion energy for the H(ls) - H(ls) interaction, through O(R-10), and the R-9 triple dipole energy corresponding to the interaction of three H(ls) atoms. The results indicate that Gaussian functions can form good basis sets for obtaining long range forces for a variety of multipole interaction energies.

    Notes: In order to treat the interaction energy of two molecules a standard Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory is developed. The Hartree-Fock functions of the separated molecules are used as one particle basis functions, the initial set of states being truncated and non-orthogonal. The non-orthogonality is included into the Hamiltonian by orthogonalization of the basis set. The unperturbed Hamiltonian is chosen so that it possesses the correct symmetry properties with respect to the electron permutations between different molecules. The procedure of this kind automatically results in the appearance of charge transfer states.A graphical technique is elaborated which is a modified version of the Feynman-Goldstone technique and provides a convenient representation of the interaction energy contributions of any order. As an example the first- and the second-order diagrams are considered.A correct expression for the dispersion energy is obtained which differs by a factor from that of the theory using a nonsymmetrical zero approximation.

    Notes: Two different perturbation series (the polarization expansion and a united-atom expansion) of the ground state energy of the delta-function model for one-electron diatoms are studied and the radii of convergence are determined. For both expansions the singularity in the energy which limits the radius of convergence is a branch point with exponent one-half. The physical significance of the branch point is that for particular values of the perturbation parameter, two different energy eigenvalues coalesce. The positions of the branch points are computed as a function of the internuclear separation R. For all values of R, both series converge for all physical values of the perturbation parameters. A lower bound to the radius of convergence of the polarization expansion has been computed previously by Claverie. It is proved in the present paper that the lower bound calculation is in fact an exact determination of the radius of convergence. The results of the model study are applied to real one-electron diatoms to suggest the possible location of a branch point singularity in the energy of the ground state.

    Notes: A variational formulation of the Hartree-Fock-Roothaan (HFR) theory for open shell ions in presence of time dependent perturbations is presented. The theory has been used to calculate the dynamic polarizabilities of the first three ions of the Li sequence. The polarizability values, extrapolated to zero frequency, show good shell by shell agreement with the corresponding static results. The polarizability graphs display resonance behaviour at the transition frequencies of the ions, and a study of these points leads to analytic HF wave functions for their low lying excited states. The calculated transition frequencies are in excellent accord with the experimental values. The calculated oscillator strengths for the 2s → np transitions are in reasonable agreement with the extensive multiconfiguration calculations of Weiss and the available experimental results.

    Notes: Hougen has established, for quasi-rigid molecules, the relationship between permutationinversions acting on the molecular Hamiltonians written in Cartesian co-ordinates and permutation-rotations (perrotations) of symmetry acting on nuclear equilibrium configurations. We extend these relations to the case of non-rigid molecules. For this, we introduce kinetic perrotations which act on nuclear equilibrium configurations in the same way as do Altmann's isodynamic operators. We show that isodynamic operators do not always form a group. Moreover, their action cannot be extended to the electrons. They cannot be used for the classification of molecular wave functions. This classification is achieved by using the group of Longuet-Higgins and the group of the corresponding feasible perrotations.

    Notes: The one-electron integral over Slater-type atomic orbitals centered at A and B and irregular solid spherical harmonics as operator centered at C is evaluated analytically by using elliptical coordinates and translation of the solid spherical harmonics from center C to either focus A or B. A special case is the three-center nuclear attraction integral which is also evaluated by means of the Neumann expansion and expressed without associate Legendre functions of the second kind. The strict observation of the charge distribution concept leads to compact expressions for the integral. It has the further advantage that the charge density distributions which have been developed for the two-center cases and used in calculations for diatomic molecules can be utilized.

    Notes: A computational method for calculating quadrupole moments from molecular wave functions in a Slater orbital basis set is described. Using both IEHT and CNDO wave functions quadrupole moments for a series of polyatomic molecules are calculated. They are compared with experimental results and the IEHT wave functions are found to give agreement with experiment while CNDO wave functions do not. The importance of bicentric densities (overlap densities) in the calculation of multipole moments is shown. This is followed by a discussion of the usefulness of these wave functions for a quantitative characterization of the electronic structure of large molecules.

    Notes: A quasi-relativistic approach to the MO-LCAO method is formulated taking into account the relativistic effects with an accuracy up to (v/c)2 terms, the relativistic part of the electronic interaction in the Hamiltonian being neglected. In the framework of this approximation a set of SCF equations of the Roothaan form is derived; here only the relativistic analogue to the closed shell systems with one-determinant wave functions is considered. In so doing three types of relativistic corrections arise which are quite similar to those of the Pauli equation for one-electron atoms. The new matrix elements appearing due to these corrections can be reduced to some common integrals, which have to be calculated with relativistic radial atomic functions. The method allows a semi-empirical approach to the problem and does not require the Dirac four-component atomic functions (unknown in the most cases), thus making possible approximate quasi-relativistic electronic structure calculations of heavy-atom compounds.

Various fixed one centre calculations of other workers for the lsσ states of H2+ and HeH++ and for the 2pσ state of HeH++ are generated as limiting cases of this more general treatment. The floating one centre perturbation results for the 1sσ states of H2+ and HeH++ are used as models for discussing the usefulness of allowing the expansion centre in the one centre method to be a function of nuclear configuration.

    Notes: Canonical transformations have been widely used to simplify Hamiltonians and other operators. In molecular and in solid state theory, the so-called Van Vieck expansion is usually employed for this purpose while in theories of particles interacting with fields a combination of canonical transformations in closed form with Van Vleck type expansions has been found effective. For some of the transformations used in applications formulas in closed form are well known. It will be shown here that such formulas can be derived whenever the transformation function is bilinear in the canonical variables, and further that the use of matrix operators makes it possible to simplify these derivations substantially. The Cayley-Hamilton theorem is then used to express the expansions for the matrix operators in closed form. The number of separate operator terms appearing in the formulas thus obtained is the same as the rank of the matrices used. To calculate the coefficients of these operator terms a new type of special functions is introduced. The resulting linear canonical transformations include generalized rotations in both ordinary and phase-space. Explicit results have been obtained for several two- to four-dimensional problems.

    Notes: First-order wave functions and binding energies of the 1sσg and 2pσu states of H2+ are calculated by simple methods for internuclear separations between 0.2 and 10a0. An exact perturbation treatment of the lsσg state with a zeroth-order function of the form N exp (-sRλ/2) exp (sR μ2) yields only fair results. An alternative method starts with zeroth-order functions of the form N exp (-sRλ/2)[exp (-sRμ/2) ± exp (sRμ/2)] for the 1sσg and 2pσu states, respectively. An approximate first-order trial function is set up and the energies are determined variationally. For both states the results are comparable to those obtained by exact perturbation treatments of the same order.

    Notes: The electron density and spatial correlation as given by the MO, VB and AMO methods for H2 and H6 are studied by means of diagrams. For comparison, diagrams representing accurate wave functions for H2 are also given.     Notes: Trial wave functions, written as the sum of a configuration interaction expansion and an explicitly correlated term which is not antisymmetric, are proposed for use in calculating the electronic properties of atoms and molecules. A variational principle, modified to allow the use for such partially antisymmetric wave functions, is developed. It is shown that the consequences of partial antisymmetry on calculated expectation values can be estimated. The method avoids difficult three-electron integrals which arise in other theories.

    Notes: The analysis of the equations of the unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) method for polyenes CNHN+2 with even and odd N » 1 is carried out. The equations of the UHF method are shown to be the same in both cases. The comparison of the UHF method with the extended Hartree-Fock (EHF) method applied to large systems is performed. The ground state and π-electron spectra of long cumulene chains CNH4 are treated by the EHF Method. The end effects are taken into consideration. It is shown that the EHF method gives a finite value of the first optical transition frequency and, at the same time, zero value of torsion barrier of end CH2-groups in long cumulene chains (N → ) in contrast to previous calculations of cumulenes by the Huckel method and the restricted Hartree-Fock method.

    Notes: The valency state (vs) concept is analyzed in the Hartree-Fock approximation. A valency state “standard” is defined for atoms at infinite separation. A molecular orbital valency state (Movs) is defined from a partitioning technique (bond energy analysis) previously introduced for the Hartree-Fock molecular wave functions. The Movs for a given atom in a molecule is much higher in energy than the vs and its energy varies from molecule to molecule depending on the exact field of the surrounding atoms. The examples selected in the discussion are the CH4 CH3F, CH2F2, CHF3 and CF4 molecules.An analysis of the orbital energies is then given in terms of the bond energy. The importance of the rearrangement effects following ionization of inner shell electrons (simulation of ESCA type experiments) is illustrated with computations of the positive ion for methane and its fluoroderivatives. It is concluded that rearrangement following ionization from inner shells is as important as rearrangements following ionization from valency electrons. A direct consequence is that the orbital energies should not be equated to the inner shell ionization potentials. The computation of such ionization potentials agrees to about 99.5% with ESCA data, when the energy of both the neutral and ionic species are computed; the use of the orbital energies limits this agreement to about 95%.
