Description / Table of Contents:
Kinetics of the oxygen sorption of metal filmsAs part of a major experimental research programme, the sorption of oxygen on vapour coated films of the metals Fe, Ni, Pt, Cr, Al, Cu and V2A steel has been investigated for periods from 1 to 104 minutes over a temperature range from 20 to 400°C. At low temperatures, the sorption variation shows, with all metals, a clear distinction between a rapid intitial sorption, and a slow gas sorption. By means of statistical testing methods, it was found that the slow sorption is better expressed by a potential law with exponents varying with temperature, that by logarithmic functions. It would, however, appear from minor devations from the straight line in the double logarithmic diagram as well as from theoretical considerations that this law can only be regarded as a good approximation to a law containing futher terms. The behaviour of each of the metals is in keeping with its passivity properties; thus, the oxygen sorption of platinum is, at higher temperatures, more rapid that that of aluminium. The simultaneous presence of water vapour causes, with all electronegative metals, a considerable acceleration in oxygen sorption. In contrast, platinum dose not show any significant influence. In the case of copper, the oxygen sorption is even markedly inhibited by water vapour.Further sorption measurements with radioactively marked gases (chlorine, hydrocyanic acid, DICHAN vapour) will be the subject of a further report.
Notes:
