    Description / Table of Contents: Some noteworthy advice on the prevention of incrustationOn the strength of American and British publications, the compositions, the composition and the form of deposition of the incrustation formed by the evaporation of sea water are surveyed, and reference is made to an agent, developed by the British Navy, which is designed to prevent such incrustation.In addition, mention is made of some more recent structural suggestions which reduce the quantity of incrustation. Finally, an American publication is quoted where unsuitable suggestions are sharply criticized.
    Notes: Auf Grund amerikanischer und englischer Veröffentlichungen wird über die Zusammensetzung und Abscheidungsform des bei der Verdampfung von Meerwasser entstehenden Kesselsteins berichtet und auf ein in der englischen Kriegsmarine entwickeltes Mittel zur Verhütung solcher Abscheidungen hingewiesen.Darüber hinaus werden neuere konstruktive Vorschläge genannt, die zu einer Verminderung des Kesselsteins führen und schließlich auch auf eine amerikanische Publikation aufmerksam gemacht, in welcher abwegige Vorschläge scharf kritisiert werden.

    Description / Table of Contents: Improving the corrosion resistanceCopper and ist alloys are notorious for their excellent resistance in aqueous and gaseous media. Admittedly, however, there are no materials based on copper which can, in the strict sense, be regarded as capable of passivation. The corrosion resistance of this group of materials is, in fact, the result of the electropositive normal potential of copper, and of the existence, on the metal surface, of dense covering layers difficult to dissolve. But the applicability even of materials containing copper is impaired by corrosion phenomena such as flaking and selective and intercystalline corrosion. The examples of internal and external oxidation, of the dezincking of brass, and of stress corrosion are used to demonstrate how these specific forms of corrosion can be countered by the addition even of small quantities of a further alloying component.
    Notes: Kupfer und seine Legierungen besitzen bekanntlich in wässerigen und gasförmigen Medien eine ausgezeichnete Beständigkeit. Allerdings bestehen auf der Basis Kupfer keine als passivierbar im strengen Sinne zu bezeichnenden Werkstoffe. Die Korrosionbeständigkeit dieser Werkstoffgruppe ist vielmehr eine Auswirkung des edlen Normalpotentials von Kupfer sowie der Existenz schwerlöslicher und dichter Deckschichten auf der Metalloberfläche. Korrsionsvorgänge wie Verzunderung, selektive und interkristalline Korrosion beeinträchtigen jedoch die Einsatzmöglichkeiten auch von kupferhaltigen Werkstoffen. Am Beispiel der inneren un äußeren Oxydation, der Entzinkung von Messing und der Spannungskorrosion wird dargelegt, wie durch Zusätze schon geringer Mengen einer weiteren Legierungskomponente diese spezifischen Korrosionsformen bekämpft werden können.

    Description / Table of Contents: The influence of hydrogen peroxide on the corrosion of brassThe corrosion behaviour of brass 80/20 and 59/41 in acetic acid, phosphoric acid, citric acid, malic acid, lactic acid and tartaric acid as well as in buffered hydrochloric acid and ammonium chloride in the presence of small additions of hydrogen peroxide is investigated. In general, the intensity of corrosion was found to be considerably increased thereby. In the case of α-brass, the de-zincking process in suppressed to such an extent that decopperization is already encountered. With α/β-Brass, the zinc-rich β-phase is attacked first, followed by an attack on the α-Phase so that the overall result is an intensified corrosion attack. In the case of tartaric acid, passivation phenomena were encountered which were, however, not investigated in detail.
    Notes: Das Korrosionsverhalten von Messing 80/20 und 59/41 in Essigsäure, Phosphorsäure, Citronensäure, Äpfelsäure, Milchsäure und Weinsäure sowie gepufferter Salzsäure und Ammoniumchlorid wird in Gegenwart geringer Wasserstoffsuperoxydzusätze untersucht. Dabei wird im allgemeinen der Angriff wesentlich verstärkt. Bei α-Messing wird die Entzinkung gleichzeitig soweit zurückgedrängt, daß schon Entkupferung vorliegt, während bei α/β-Messing zunächst die zinkreiche β-Phase und erst nachher auch die α-Phase angegriffen wird, so daß sich im Endeffekt verstärkter Gesamtangriff ergibt. Im Falle der Weinsäure treten nicht näher untersuchte Passivierungserscheinungen auf.

    Description / Table of Contents: Spotless drying and temporary corrosino protectionThe author discusses the problems of „spotless drying“ which are encountered in different industrial processing techniques, possibly in combination with the applicating, in a single operation and without additional energy consumption, of a corrosion protection film; he also deals with the possibilities of tackling these problems with the aid of so-called „de-watering fluids“. The function of dewatering fluids is explained by analyzing their composition, and the influence of this composition on the applicability of such fluids is discussed. The author has tried to take into account the practical requirements of the processing techniques themselves as well as those of the persons called upon to carry them out, and has endeavoured to show that both considerations can well be combined and may be conducive to economic production.A description is given of the two main components of de-watering fluids, viz. solvent and wetting agent, and experience gained in practical applications is discussed Again on the strength of practical experience, advice is given on the pretreatment of the workpieces required for the application of de-watering fluids as well as on the treatment, economic size, and regeneration of the baths.
    Notes: Es werden die in verschiedenen industriell verwendeten Verfahrenstechniken auftretenden Probleme der “fleckenfreien Trocknung” gegebenenfalls in Kombination mit Aufbringen eines Korrosionsschutzfilms in einem Arbeitsgang und ohne zusätzliche Energieaufwendung kurz aufgeführt und die Möglichkeiten, mit Hilfe sog. „Dewatering Fluids“ diese Probleme zu meistern, erläutert. Die Funktion von Dewatering Fluids wird anhand deren Aufbaus erklärt ung gleichzeitig wird deutlich gemacht, wie dieser Einfluß auf ihre betriebliche Eignung hat. Der Verfasser war bemüht, von den praktischen Forderungen sowohl des mit solchen Betriebsmitteln hantierenden Menschen, als auch jenen der technischen Verfahren selbst auszugehen und aufzuzeigen, daß eine Kombination beider möglich ist und fertigungswirtschaftliche Vorteile bringen kann.Die beiden Hauptkomponenten von Dewatering Fluid, das Lösungsmittel und das Netzmittel, werden näher beschrieben.     Description / Table of Contents: Observations concerning primary and secondary passivationPotentiostatic and galvanostatic measurements in sulphuric acid electrolytes have been carried out on high-purity ironchrome alloys with chromium contents ranging from 5 to 70 per cent., as well as on high-purity chromium. These measurements were supplemented by the examination of passivation curves, using the galvanostatic insertion method.The passivation currents thus measured were found to differ considerably from the values known so far. The newly found values can be calculated with the aid of an approximation formula as a function of the chromium content. Apart from the “primary” passivation, it was possible, in the concentration range from about 10 to about 40 per cent. Cr, also to observe the „secondary“ passivation which is likewise governed by the current (i) / time (t) law characteristic for passivation generally: (i - i0) t = const. As this phenomenon is greatly dependent on the pH value of the electrolyte and on the presence of complex-forming substances, it is suggested that the phenomenon might be explained by the formation, due to hydrolysis of a second passivation layer.It is assumed that, in the state of “primary passivation” the alloys are covered by a very thin film comparable to that of passive chromium, and that this film is then covered by a “secondary” passivation layer of greater thickness, similar to the iron passivation layer.In the zone of primary passivation, the alloys are anodically dissolved over the whole area whilst, the zone of secondary passivation, strong pit corrosion can be observed.
    Notes: Es wurden an sehr reinen Eisen-Chrom-Legierungen mit Cr-Gehalten von 5 bis 70% sowie an reinstem Chrom potentionstatische und galvanostatische Messungen in Schwefelsäureelektrolyten durch geführt, die durch die Untersuchung von Passivierungskurven nach der galvanostatischen Einschaltmethode ergänzt wurden.Für die Passivierungsstrommengen wurden Werte gefunden, die von den bisher bekannten erheblich abweichen. Die neu ermittelten Werte lassen sich in Abhängigkeit von Cr-Gehalt der Legierungen durch eine Näherungsformel berechnen. Neben der „primären“ konnte im Konzentrationsbereich von etwa 10 bis 40% Cr auch die „sekundäre“ Passivierung beobachtet werden, für die ebenfalls das die Passivierung kennzeichnende Strom(i)-Zeit(t)-Gesetz (i-i0) = const. gilt. Wegen der starken Abhängigkeit dieses Vorganges von pH-Wert des Elektrolyten und der Anwesenheit von Komplexbildnern wird zu dessen Erklärung die hyrolysebedingte Bildung einer zweiten Passivschicht vor geschlagen.Es wird angenommen, daß die Legierungen im „primärpassiven“ Zustand mit einer sehr dünnen Schicht belegt sind, die mit derjenigen des passiven Chroms vergleichbar ist und auf der sich bei der „sekundären“ Passivierung eine dickere zweite Schicht aufbaut die einer Eisenpassivschicht ähnelt.Im primärpassiven Gebiet werden die Legierungen auf der ganzen Fläche anodisch aufgelöst, während im sekundärpassiven Bereich starke Lochfraßbildung beobachtet wird.

    Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion protection by means of paintsThe degree of protection afforded to metal surfaces such as iron or aluminium by coats of paints, i. e., organic protective coatings, is largely governed by three factors: the metal surface acting as a boundary layer; the boundary layers between the different coats of paint; and the top surface of the paint system, i. e. the boundary layer between point and air. These boundary layers are here subjected to closer scrutiny, and special attention is drawn to the importance of the boundary layers as regards the preparation and pre-treatment of the base, the application of the different protective coatings, and the service life required from them. The problems of the thickness of the coatings and their freedom from porosity are discussed, and brief reference is made to the importance of pigment volume concentration. The informative value of the sections dealing with boundary layers is enhanced by references to the influence of the structural design, to the correct preparation and pretreatment of bases, to the economic aspects, to the most suitable ways and means of applying the coatings and, finally, to the influence of the surroundings. The sections dealing with the structure and system of coats of paints and the discussion of the solution of difficult problems of corrosion protection by means of organic coatings convey an idea of the practical application of the coating nowadays available for corrosion protection. In conclusion, the author discusses the notions „metal-bare“ and „metal-pure“.
    Notes: Die Sicherung von Metalloberflächen wie z. B. Eisen oder Aluminum durch Anstrichschichten, d. h. organische Schutzschichten, wird im wesentlichen von 3 Komponenten: der Metalloberfläche als Grenzschicht, den Grenzschichten zwischen den einzelnen Anstrichschichten und der Anstrichoberfläche, d. h. der Grenzfläche Anstrich/Luft mitbestimmt. Diese Grenzschichten werden einer näheren Betrachtung unterworfen und auf die Bedeutung der Grenzschichten in bezug auf Vorbereitung und Vorbehandlung des Untergrundes, auf die Aufbringung der einzelnen Schichten und die Lebensanforderungen, die an die Schutzschichten gestellt werden, wird hingewiesen. Die Probleme der Schichtdicke und Porenfreiheit von Schutzschichten werden besprochen und die Bedeutung der Pigmentvolumenkonzentration kurz erläutert; Hinweise auf den Einfluß der Konstruktion eines Bauwerkes, auf das richtige Vorbereiten und Vorbehandeln von Untergründen, auf die größte Wirtschaftlichkeit, auf zweckmäßige Aufbringung und Aufbringungsmethoden und endlich auf die Einwirkung der Umwelt sollen den Aussagewert der Abschnitte über die Grenzflächen noch vertiefen. Die Abschnitte über Anstrichaufbau und -systeme sowie die Erläuterungen zur Lösung schwieriger Korrosionsschutzprobleme durch organische Schutzschichten geben einen Ausblick auf die praktische Anwendung der heute verfügbaren Anstrichmittel im Korrosionsschutz. Als Abschluß wird zu den Begriffen metallisch blank oder metallisch rein Stellung genommen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion of metals caused by intermediate compoundsThe author reports cases of heavy corrosion of tantalum and noble metals caused by mixes of methane and halogens. Series of tests suggest that this kind of corrosion is caused by the influence of intermedialely generated chloro-formic acid. Mixes of halogens with higher alcohols such as ethanol, propanol, etc. have no corrosive effect on tantalum.
    Notes: Es wird über starke Korrosion von Tantal und Edelmetallen durch Mischungen aus Methanol und Halogenen berichtet. Durch Versuchsreihen wird nahegelegt, daß dieser Angriff auf der Einwirkung intermediär entstehender Chlorameisensäure beruht. Gemische von Halogenen mit höheren Alkoholen wie Äthanol, Propanol usw. greifen Tantal nicht an.

    Description / Table of Contents: The influence of embedding media on the oxidation and corrosion behaviour of heating conductor alloysIn many applications, contact between metallic heating conductors and ceramic embedding media is unavoidable. The possible consequences of such a contact are discussed from different points of view.Special attention is paid to the influence of insulating compounds on the oxidation behaviour of austenitic and ferritic heating conductor alloys and its great dependency on the degree of impurities contained in these substances. The corrosion behaviour of moist-embedded ferritic alloys is discussed as well as the type of oxygen corrosion with special reference to the corrosion encountered in embedding compounds at room temperature. Finally, the discussion turns to the phenomenon of “green rot oxidation” and the dissociation of impurities of the compounds accompanied by the formation of metallic iron as possible consequences of an oxygen reduction in the voids of compressed insulating compounds, caused by oxidation of the heating conductor.
    Notes: Die möglichen Folgeerscheinungen eines in vielen Anwendungsfällen notwendigen Kontaktes zwischen metallischem Heizleiter und keramischer Einbettmasse werden unter verschiedenen Gesichtspunkten erörtert.Besonders eingehend wird der Einfluß von Isoliermassen auf das Oxydationsverhalten der austenitischen und ferritischen Heizleiterlegierungen untersucht und auf die starke Abhängigkeit vom Verunreinigungsgrad dieser Stoffe hingewiesen. Weiterhin wird das Korrosionsverhalten feucht eingebetteter ferritischer Legierungen behandelt und der Typ der Sauerstoffkorrosion speziell für den korrodierenden Angriff in Einbettmassen bei Raumtemperatur besprochen. Schließlich werden als mögliche Folgen einer durch Oxydation des Heizleiters verursachten Sauerstoffverarmung des Porenvolumens verdichteter Isoliermassen, die Erscheinung der Grünfäule und die Dissoziation von Verunreinigungen der Massen unter Bildung metallischen Eisens diskutiert.

    Description / Table of Contents: The importance of layer thickness in corrosion protection coatingsThe protective value of coatings is decisively governed by the layer thickness. This applies to active as well as passive anti-corrosive coatings.The layer thickness has a bearing on the factors important to corrosion protection, such as adhesion, hardness and elasticity, porosity, durability, and corrosion protection effect.Contrary to earlier assumptions, the layer thickness required for optimum protection cannot be determined from the depth of roughness of the coating base alone. What is decisive is the ratio of depth and width of roughness.The layer thickness that can be achieved with a given coating compound depends on the type of this compound, on the application technique used, and on the processing.Of particular importance is the measuring of the layer thickness, and a description is given of the methods most commonly used.On the basis of the investigations carried out by R. pierce, it is shown that corrosion protection can only become possible with a dry layer thickness exceeding 125 micron.
    Notes: Von ausschlaggebender Bedeutung für den Schutzwert eines Anstriches ist die Schichtdicke. Dies gilt für die aktiven und passiven Korrosionsschutzanstrichsysteme.Die Schichtdicke beeinflußt die für den Korrosionsschutz wichtigen Faktoren wie Haftung, Härte und Elastizität, Porigkeit, Beständigkeit und Korrosionsschutzwirkung.Die für einen optimalen Schutz erforderliche Schichtdicke läßt sich nicht, wie bisher angenommen, allein aus der Rauhtiefe des Anstrichuntergrundes ableiten. Vielmehr ist das Verhältnis Rauhtiefe zu Rauhbreite entscheidend.Die mit einem Anstrichmittel erreichbare Schichtdicke ist bedingt durch den Typ des Anstrichmittels, der Art der Anstrichtechnik, der Verarbeitung.Von besonderer Bedeutung ist die Messung der Schichtdicke. Die gebräuchlichsten Verfahren werden aufgeführt.An Hand der Untersuchungen von R. Pierce wird gezeigt, daß korrosionsschutz erst oberhalb einer Trockenschichtdicke von 125 μ möglich ist.

    Description / Table of Contents: Cleaning and Sanitation of tanksIn recent years, cleaning and sanitation of milk tanks by spraying methods have assumed greater importance. In this connection, the question arises whether the spraying methods might expose the tank construction materials to corrosion risks. With the spraying chambers conventionally used for corrosion tests, the solutions are deliberately sprayed into the air, and not directly on the specimens of material. For an assessment of the corrosivity of sprayed solutions, it was therefore necessary to develop an apparatus which permits the direct spraying of the solution on to the test plates. Design and operation of this plant are described in detail.
    Notes: Die Reinigung und Desinfektion von Milchtanks mittels Sprühverfahrens haben in den vergangenen Jahren Bedeutung gewonnen. Im Zusammenhang damit taucht die Frage auf, ob die Sprühverfahren mit Korrosionsgefahren für die im Tankbau eingesetzten Werkstoffe verbunden sein können. Bei den bisher für Korrosionsversuche eingesetzten Sprühkammern werden die Lösungen absichtlich nur in den Luftraum, aber nicht auf die Materialproben direkt versprüht. Daher mußte für die Kontrolle des korrosiven Verhaltens versprühter Lösungen eine Apparatur entwickelt werden, welche es gestattet, die Lösung unmittelbar auf die Prüfbleche zu sprühen. Aufbau und Arbeitsweise der Anlage sind eingehend beschrieben.

    Description / Table of Contents: Basic behaviour of passive alloysThe corrosion proneness of a base metal such as iron can be considerably reduced by suitable alloying constituents, e. g. chromium, which increase the passivation tendency, either by reducing the current density required for passivation to values of the magnitude of the corrosion current, or by shifting the Flade potential to more electro-negative values. A further possibility consists in adding alloying components where the transition for cathodic hydrogen generation is small so that the initial corrosion current density can be increased to the critical passivation current density. This is the case, for example, if palladium is added to stainless 18/8 steel or to titanium. With a multi-phase alloy, passivity can essentially be created in a similar way, viz. Through a local current effect by increasing the speed of the cathodic reaction.The critical passivation current density reaches a minimum at and above a critical alloy composition which lies at 12 per cent. Cr with Cr-Fe alloys, and at 30 to 40 per cent. Ni with Ni-Cu alloys. The reasons for the observed critical alloy composition are discussed.
    Notes: Die Korrosionsanfälligkeit eines Grundmetalls wie Eisen kann wesentlich durch geeignete Legierungsbestandteile, z.B. Chrom, herabgesetzt werden, welche die Tendenz zur Passivierung erhöhen, indem entweder die zur passivierung erforderliche Stromdichte auf Werte von der Größe des Korrosionsstromes herabgedrückt wird oder das Fladepotential zu unedleren Werten verschoben wird. Eine weitere Möglichkeit besteht darin, Leigierungsbestandteile zuzusetzen, an denen der Übergang für kathodische Wasserstoffentwicklung klein ist, wodurch die anfängliche Korrosionsstromdichte auf die kritische Passivierungsstromdichte erhöht werden kann. Dies ist beispielsweise bei der Zugabe von Palladium zu rostfreiem 18/8-Stahl oder Titan der Fall. Bei einer Mehrphasenlegierung kann Passivität im Grunde genommen auf ähnliche Weise erzeugt werden, und zwar durch Lokalstromwirkung bei Erhöhung der Geschwindigkeit der kathodischen Reaktion.Die kritische Passivierungstromdichte erreicht ein Minimum bei un oberhalb einer kritischen Legierungszusammensetzung, die für Cr-Fe-Legierungen bei 12% Cr und Ni-Cu-Legierungen bei 30 bis 40% Ni liegt. Die Gründe für die beobachtete kritische Legierungszusammensetzung werden diskutiert.

    Notes: Auf dem Kupfer-Fahrdraht elektrischer Eisenbahnen bilden sich die drei Kristallarten von grüner Kupferpatina. Sie entsprechen basischem Kupferchlorid, -nitrat und -sulfat. Das Chlorid findet sich am Meeresstrand, das Nitrat in der Gebirgsgegend und das Sulfat in Fabrikgegenden.
