    Notes: Solutions to the momentum and diffusion equations are obtained for rotating disk systems with an imperfect semipermeable interface, with direct application made to the reverse somosis or hyperfiltration process of salt water purification. The equations are solved exactly, and a new technique for solving the momentum equations is described. An approximate solution to the diffusion equation is also obtained which is also applicable to the energy equation, and is shown to be accurate for Prandtl and Schmidt numbers ≥ 1, for a wide range of interfacial mass transfer, for all wedge-type flows as well as the rotating disk system.

    Notes: The fundamental problem in this work was to determine if methods of predicting mass transport rates in porous catalysts, developed from theory in the absence of chemical reaction, are valid in the presence of reaction. By using the ortho-para shift of hydrogen over a ferric oxide gel catalyst as the reacting system, the effective diffusivity within the catalyst was determined from kinetic data on five different particle sizes of the catalyst. This effective diffusivity was then compared with that predicted by three different procedures recently published. These procedures predicted diffusivities approximately 40% below the experimentally obtained diffusivity. Although the differences between the experimental and predicted effective diffusivities can be regarded as within the limitations of the accuracy of the predictions, the observed differences may also be caused by some form of surface transport.

    Notes: An experimental study of velocity and void-fraction profiles has been carried out for the cocurrent two-phase flow of both air and water, and air and glycerine-water systems. The investigation was restricted to flow in a horizontal, 1 in. diam. tube with primary emphasis on the bubble flow regime. The assumptions which must be made to reduce the general equations of continuity, momentum, and energy to the forms appropriate for two-phase flow are presented and the equations simplified for the case of no local slip. A model is proposed which allows the determination, by trial, of the two-phase velocity and void-fraction profiles. The profiles generated by the use of the model in conjunction with experimental sampling data are presented, the profile shapes are discussed, and their variations with Reynolds and Froude numbers and gas volumetric flow fraction are shown to be self-consistent. The horizontal profiles are found to be in fair agreement with those predicted from Levy's mixing length theory. A correlation scheme is outlined which, supplemented by data over wider ranges of operating conditions, would serve as a method for estimating pressure drops in two-phase flow.

    Notes: Area-free continuous-phase mass-transfer coefficients for continuous flow of ethyl acetate (dispersed) and water (continuous) were measured in a 9.5 in. diameter baffled vessel, agitated with 3 and 5 in. diameter flat-blade turbines, and with the 3 in. turbine in the absence of baffles. Specific interfacial area was determined by a light-transmission technique which permitted a vertical traverse of the vessel.The specific area is greatest, and mean drop diameter smallest, near the impeller. The mean area is lower than that predicted from existing correlations for batch operation in the absence of mass transfer. Continuous-phase mass-transfer coefficients increase with increased impeller Reynolds number and dispersed-phase holdup, and are about 2.5 times larger in the unbaffled vessel at the same impeller power. The coefficients are generally larger than those predicted by existing correlations based on suspended solids, and it is suggested that this and the effect of holdup is the result of drop coalescence and redispersion, which causes a renewal of the continuous phase surrounding each drop. Rough estimates of the minimum coalescence frequency in the baffled vessel and application of the renewal concept to the data appear to confirm this view. Lack of information on circulation rates prevents immediate test of the data from the unbaffled vessel.

    Notes: By using an isothermal throttling calorimeter, built for recirculating vapor operation, the effects of pressure on the enthalpy of methane and two methane-propane (93.9 and 86.2% methane) mixtures were measured. Pure methane was run at 150°F. and the two mixtures were studied at 90, 150, and 200°F. The pressures for these experiments were 500, 1,000, 1,500, and 2,000 lb./sq.in.abs.The resulting data were compared with similar data from other sources for these same systems and conditions. Agreement is good with enthalpy values obtained from both experimental volumetric and Joule-Thomson data.Prediction methods for the isothermal pressure effect on the enthalpy are compared with these data. These methods demonstrate the reliability of the Redlich-Kwong and Benedict-Webb-Rubin equations and Pitzer's corresponding states correlation for calculating isothermal enthalpy changes for these systems and conditions.

    Notes: The quasilinearization technique is used to overcome the dimensionality difficulties of dynamic programming. The approach is based on the fact that if the difference or differential equations are linear, their closed forms ofsolution can be obtained. This solution permits us to separate the effects due to the initial state from the effectsdue to the control variables. By using this separation combined with quasilinearization, the dimensionality of the functional equation of dynamic programming can be reduced to one in most cases. First, the optimization problem in cross-current extraction with discontinuous objectionfunction is used to illustrate the technique. Then the technique is generalized to systems of difference and differential equations with fairly general objective functions.

    Notes: Correlations for the adsorption of a binary gas mixture on a heterogeneous adsorbent have been developed for both mobile and immobile models. Experiments determined the form for the expression of the surface heterogeneity, and only one dimensionless constant for the molecular size was required.The correlations were tested by experimental data on the system methane-ethane-silica gel. For the same amount of adsorption the root-mean-square deviation of calculated versus experimental fugacity ranged from 4.1 to 5.2% for methane and from 2.7 to 3.4% for ethane at 5.0, 15.0, 25.0, and 35.0°C. for surface coverage ranging from zero to monolayer and for the complete composition range. The system at these conditions is classified as highly mobile based on examination of spreading pressure curves, both experimental and calculated based on the correlations.

    Notes: Equations are derived for predicting the velocity above which a jet forms when one Newtonian liquid is injected into a second stationary immiscible liquid. Comparison of the theory with experimental data obtained for fifteen liquid-liquid systems and five nozzle diameters shows a mean error of 6.6%. The equation also predicts the jetting velocity for injection of liquids into gases and the critical velocity at which bubble formation changes from a constant volume to a constant frequency mechanism for gas injection into liquids.

    Notes: The kinetics of physical adsorption of propane from helium on fixed beds of activated alumina at 30°C. and at atmospheric pressure was studied. Two grades of activated alumina with the same average pore size distribution but different pore size distributions were used. Gas concentration, flow rate, and adsorbent particle size were also varied. The rate of internal diffusion controlled the adsorption process and was best described by Ficks' equation for unsteady state diffusion into a sphere. The internal diffusion appeared to be by a pore diffusion rather than by a surface diffusion mechanism.

    Notes: In chemical engineering and process control, the numerical solution of large systems of linear, time-invariant, differential equations must often be considered. Standard numerical techniques such as the Runge-Kutta method usually require excessive computational time. Since often the time solution of only a few variables is desired in such large systems, a method has been developed to take advantage of this and allows the solution of large systems of differential equations to be obtained in an extremely fast and efficient manner. The basis of the method is to solve for the poles and zeros of the system and then to find the time solution in terms of these poles and zeros.

    Notes: The phenomenological theory previously prsented for describing the rheological properties of non-Newtonian materials was applied to two polymer solution systems. The basic shear diagram is needed over a wide range of shear rates and polymer concentrations, and such data are not readily available; however, what could be found supported the analysis. In order to confirm the theory further, ten solutions of polymethylmetacrylate in diethyphthalate with concentrations up to 55% were investigated at 40°C. The results indicated that the forward and reverse orders were 1 and 2 respectively and that the two parameters of the theory (a susceptibility to shear term and an equilibrium type of constant) were constant over the range of concentrations investigated. The flow data were reproduced to within a few percent for all solutions, although the errors were large for the very dilute concentration, where experimental difficulties precluded obtaining reliable data. The method allows correlation of polymer solution data over the range from lower to upper Newtonian viscosities and over a wide concentration range.

    Notes: This paper reports on an experimental study of the direct contact heat transfer between oil and water in turbulent pipe flow under nonboiling conditions. Data were taken by a new technique, namely, monitoring on a very fast response recorder the output of a small thermocouple placed in the two-phase flow. The variables studied were the liquid velocity, the pipe diameter, the water volume fraction, and, to a lesser degree, the interfacial tension and the oil viscosity. A successful semiempirical method of correlating the data is also presented.

    Notes: The intramembrane transport properties of carbohydrates were investigated in cellophane. The experiments performed were the measurement of net volume transfer under a concentration and pressure gradient and the solute transfer due to a concentration difference together with the physical properties of the membrane. The matrix of phenomenological coefficients characteristic to the transport was established after the phase boundary contributions were extricated from the experimental transport data. These thermodynamic coefficients were then interpreted through the Spiegler-Kedem-Katchalsky frictional model.The analysis of the frictional coefficients clearly indicated the importance of solute-polymer interactions. The magnitude of solute-solvent frictional coefficients in the membrane were compared with the corresponding interactions in free solutions. Their differences were explained in terms of the interaction of the solute with the macromolecular network and were quantitatively expressed by introducing two reduced frictional coefficients. The tortuosity factor was shown to be related to these interactions and not a simple geometric property of the membrane. The temperature dependence of the frictional coefficients was established.

    Notes: An analytical investigation of gas side heat transfer in high contraction, high convergence flows is presented. A partical criterion for retransition of a turbulent boundary layer is derived from the integral momentum equation and the effect of pressure gradient in the turbulent boundary-layer flow regime is described with the help of external flow relations. The validity of the analytical results is demonstrated by comparison to available internal and external flow, throat heat transfer data.Accordingly, various turbulent boundary-layer heat transfer levels are obtained depending on the sonic-point pressure gradient, the specific heat ratio, the reference-to-stagnation temperature ratio, and the exponent of the viscosity-temperature function. Furthermore, the pressure gradient and the superficial mass velocity have opposite effects on the onset of retransition of a turbulent boundary layer.

    Notes: An eddy diffusivity model was developed and used to predict velocity distributions for turbulent flow of air in annuli. Comparison of distributions calculated by the model with experimental data shows that good agreement between calculated and measured values can be attained for core-to-shell ratios from 0.001 to 0.990. The significant advantage of using a diffusivity model to predict velocity distributions lies in the inherent ability to consider systems with nonlinear stress distributions.

    Notes: A mathematical model for multicomponent batch distillation was derived, and a FORTRAN IV program was written for solution on a digital computer. The program has been used in the simulation of several commercial batch distillation columns.A calculation procedure for the numerical solution of batch distillation equations starting from total reflux steady state conditions was developed, and the step-by-step procedure is presented here. Also included is a discussion of the stability and relative computational effectiveness of various numerical integration techniques when applied to transient distillation calculations. The discussion applies equally well to both batch distillation and unsteady state continuous distillation.

    Notes: Bubble driven fluid circulations are present in bubble columns, gas lifts, pool boiling, etc. Their mechanism is shown to be quite similar to the mechanism of natural covection but with much larger driving forces. These circulations are stable in many baffled systems but unstable and rapidly changing in size, shape, and orientation in unbaffled systems. The effect of these circulations in bubble columns is to lower holdup and vapor residence time, thus decreasing the mass transfer efficiency of the column.

    Notes: Temperature profiles of dispersed kerosene and water were measured in a spray column heat exchanger, 15 cm. in diameter and 160 cm. long. Dispersed packing of drops and narrow temperature ranges were used. The flow rates used were 0 to 50 liters/min. of water and 5 to 40 liters/min. of kerosene. The physical picture that emerges from the temperature profiles is that heat is transferred from fully mixed drops to fully mixed wakes while the wakes are formed, by shedding and renewal of elements of wakes in most of the column and by complete mixing of all streams at the water inlet at the top of the column. Mathematical equations were developed from the physical model. The volume of the wakes and the rate of shedding of wake elements were estimated from the temperature profiles and were used to calculate the temperature profiles for this and for other studies. The agreement of the calculated profiles with the experimental data is very good.

    Notes: Local and average heat transfer coefficients have been measured for a sphere in a randomly packed bed. A steady state technique was employed in which internally heated spheres were placed in a bed 35 in. deep and 12 in. sq. Air passed through the bed in downflow, the range of Reynolds numbers being from 120 to 1,700 based on the sphere diameter and the superficial velocity.Average heat transfer coefficients have been measured at twenty-five positions permitting the assessment of the effect of position. An entrance region limited to the first two particle layers in the bed has been verified.Distributions of the local heat transfer coefficient on the surface of a single sphere in the top layer and in the nineteenth layer of the bed have also been measured. These distributions indicate that a laminar boundary layer exists over portions of the sphere surface.

    Notes: Vapor-liquid equilibrium data for polar solvent-hydrocarbon mixtures are relatively plentiful for paraffins and aromatics; they are somewhat less plentiful for olefins. However, almost no data at all have been published for such mixtures wherein the hydrocarbon possesses a triple bond. This paper reports vapor-pressure measurements of binary mixtures of 1-hexyne with acetone, acetonitrile, dimethyl carbonate, nitroethane and dimethyl formamide in the temperature range 0 to 70°C. The results are compared with those for polar solvent-hydrocarbon mixtures wherein the hydrocarbon is paraffinic, olefinic, or aromatic.

    Notes: A boundary layer solution applicable to a certain general type of mass transfer operations was developed by Baasel and Smith (1). When the solution was adapted to the systems of condensation of a vapor from noncondensing gases and absorption of a gas into a wetted wall column, the temperature and interfacial area could not be completely controlled. To overcome these difficulties, the rate of internal dissolution of a hollow cylinder of benzoic acid was experimentally measured and compared to the theoretically predicted values.The ratios of the predicted rates to the observed rates fell, with the exception of two runs out of twenty nine, between 0.622 and 1.303. It was therefore concluded that the finite difference techniques used to obtain a mathematical solution were valid. However, it was observed that the assumption of unidirectional diffusion was possibly not valid. It was concluded that for systems in which the ratio of the total molar density of the fluid to the saturation concentration of the material being transferred was large, in the approximate range of 700 to 2,700, the boundary layer approach corresponded to the Leveque approximation of the classical Graetz solution for heat transfer for fluids with a parabolic velocity distribution.

    Notes: In this paper a method for obtaining periodical solutions of the nonlinear equations of motion is proposed. The method is applied to the case of a falling liquid film in wave motion. It consists in a triple series expansion; the first is a Taylor expansion, with respect to the distance y1 from the free surface; a second one, representing the periodicity condition, is a Fourier expansion with respect to the variable z = k(x - ct), and a third one is a Taylor expansion with respect to the amplitude 2iφ1. The calculation of the different coefficients is made easy by the fact that the algebraic equations obtained are linear and do not simulataneously contain all the unknowns. This allows the performance of the computation step by step in increasing order of the powers of φ1. The periodicity conditions allows the determination of all physical quantities as functions of one of them. The amplitude |2iφ11| was selected as the parameter.The existence of a dimensionless quantity for the wave flow is outlined. Arguments are adduced in support of the fact that the amplitude| 2iφ1| depends only on ψ and a universal curve |2iφ1| vs. ψ is plotted on the basis of experimental data. Theoretical equations for the wave length, the wave velocity and the film thickness as a function of ψ are established. There is good agreement between the theoretical equations and experiment.

    Notes: Several methods that can be used to obtain solutions to the laminar boundary layer momentum, energy, and diffusion differential equations for moving continuous flat surfaces with suction and injection are presented. Results are obtained for a wide range of the injection parameter, f(0), at Prandtl and Schmidt numbers of 1, 10, and 100. Those methods which permit hand calculation of the properties of interest are compared using the numerical solutions of the boundary layer differential equations as the exact solutions. The new integral method of Hanson and Richardson which gives results for the momentum thickness that deviate less than 2.2% from the exact values is recommended for predicting values of the momentum boundary layer parameters. The Von Karman-Pohlhausen method, which was modified to account for suction and injection, is most generally valid. This method gives acceptable values of the transfer coefficients for heat, mass and momentum transfer for most of the values considered.

This method is also compared with the alternative structural analysis method of the authors.

    Notes: The influence of nonuniform initiation on conversion in single-step photoreactions is examined theoretically. Reaction types studied include reaction following absorption by reactant and photosensitized reaction. The batch slab reactor and the laminar flow tubular reactor with outside radiation are considered. In the case of reaction following absorption by reactant in the batch slab reactor, nonuniform initiation is found to have no influence on conversion, whereas for the other combinations of reaction and reactor its presence requires the specification of diffusion as well as kinetic parameters in order to characterize the conversion history unequivocally. The characteristics of conversion histories in the presence of nonuniform initiation are determined, and the influence of nonuniform initiation on chemical measurements of radiation and on tubular reactor performance in the neighborhood of laminar-turbulent flow transitions is discussed.

    Notes: The Martinelli model for pressure drop in flowing two-phase systems has been examined in detail for para-hydrogen from 1 atm. to its critical pressure. Amethod for obtaining the Martinelli Φ term, two phase friction factor, at intermediate pressures is presented. Φ2 can be expressed as a function of pressure and quality. The Martinelli β term, ratio of actualvapor or gas area to an idealized cylindrical area, is found to vary greatly and to indicate first an increase in gas-liquid interface to gas volume ratio and then a decrease with increasing pressure. Some experimental data are examined in light of this development.

    Notes: Superheated mixtures of vapor and noncondensable gas were cooled and condensed in down-flow inside a single tube vertical condenser, 0.995 in. I.D. and 3.5 ft. long. The systems studied were air-water, carbon dioxide-water and helium-water. A bulk stream mixing probe was developed which enabled the measurement of point values of the stream temperature and partial pressure at various positions within the condenser. The Reynolds number range of the investigation was 5,700 to 34,000.A theoretical solution of the problem, using Bras' design method, was solved rigorously on a digital computer. Results indicated excellent agreement between the theoretical and experimental cooling paths and the required transfer area. The inclusion of the Ackerman correction factor (for the sensible heat carried by the diffusing vapor) into the calculation gave significantly better agreement for all cases tested.

    Notes: Liapunov's direct method is used to obtain regions of asymptotic stability for nonlinear systems with natural boundaries. In some cases this leads to larger stable regions of interest than if the bounds had been neglected. With account taken of the natural boundaries, a design method is formulated to find controller gains that give stable responses for anticipated disturbances. To compare the stability effects of different controllers and their gains, the change in the shape of the Liapunov function must be considered as well as the change in size of the region in which its time derivative is negative definite. Neglect of changes in the shape of the Liapunov function has led to misleading conclusions in previous work.

    Notes: A correlation is presented for predicting the drop volume for injection at low velocities of one Newtonian liquid into a second stationary immiscible Newtonian liquid in the absence of surface active agents. The analysis, which is based on a two-stage process of drop formation, predicts drop volumes within an average error of 11% for fifteen liquid-liquid systems covering a wider range of variables than any previous study. Although the equation was tested primarily with mutually saturated liquids, if correctly predicted drop size for two systems where mass transfer was occurring.

For a Noll simple material, inertial effects may be neglected with respect to viscous effects as the product of a Reynolds number with a Weissenberg number goes to zero (in the limit of a Newtonian fluid, inertial effects may be neglected as the Reynolds number goes to zero). When inertial effects can be neglected, a resistance transformation for each phase is introduced which in part maps the local volume-averaged velocity vector into the local force per unit volume which that phase exerts on the pore walls and the moving phase interfaces. Capillary pressure is defined through a local surface average of the jump balance for momentum. The shape of the curve denoting capillary pressure as a function of saturation in a two-phase flow may vary with the contact angle. For an isotropic multiphase flow of incompressible materials, the functional dependence of the resistance coefficient for a Noll simple material and for a Newtonian fluid is discussed by means of the Buckingham-Pi theorem.

    Notes: We have developed analytic design methods for combination feedback-feedforward control systems and have evaluated systems yielding optimal performance while subject to constraints commonly encountered in the chemical industry. Using the mathematical techniques pioneered by Wiener for the solution of the design equations, we have based the optimization on minimization of the mean square output of a system subject to a random disturbance. Side conditions for the constraint on mean square control effort, signal-to-noise ratio in the feedback system, and minimization of error output caused by misidentification of plant parameters were found to be necessary to give physically realizable and meaningful designs. The analytic design methods are useful for analysis of control system performance and capabilities under a variety of constraints, but the optimal designs are marginally superior to ideal or invariant feedforward controllers coupled with tuned proportional feedback controls. The principal improvement in the optimal design is in conservation of control effort when compromises in system performance are necessary because of this restriction.

    Notes: A limited number of tests were made of promoters, their method of application, corrosion resistance, etc.The best promoter found to date is tetrakis octadecyl thio silane (C18H37S)4Si which differs only in parafinic chain length from (C12H25S)4Si which was found to be one of the best promoters for drop-by-drop condensation by Blackman and Dewar (1, 2), Hampson (2, 3), and Osment (4, 5). These compounds are nontoxic.The C18 compound appears to be superior to the C12 compound in that it is less volatile, lower melting (∼34°C), and appears to impart superior oxidation resistance to copper when adsorbed on clean oxide-free metal.Copper tubes can be rapidly cleaned in place by sulfur dioxide or hydrochloric acid in steam, or, if previously promoted by a thio silane, by treatment first with chlorine gas in steam.The thio silanes may be rapidly applied as a 1% solution in octanoic acid injected into the sea-water feed. The acid acts as cleaner and poor promoter, allowing the good promoter molecules to contact the metal tube.The amounts of the best promoters required are in the parts per billion range.

    Notes: An experimental and analytical study is reported of transient natural convection in a vertical cylinder. For the experiments a cylinder was partially filled with liquid and subjected to a uniform heat flux at the walls. Thermocouples were used to measure the unsteady temperature field within the liquid; dye tracers were used to study flow patterns. Parameters that were varied included the test liquid (water-glycerin mixtures), the liquid depth, and the wall heat flux. A range of Prandtl number from 2 to 8,000, L/D ratio from 1 to 3, and Grashof number from 103 to 1011 were studied, encompassing both laminar and turbulent flow regimes.An analytical model was developed by dividing the system into three regions: a thin boundary layer rising along the heated walls, a mixing region at the top where the boundary layer discharges and mixes with the upper core fluid, and a main core region which slowly falls in plug flow. The temperature of the core fluid was assumed to vary in the vertical direction but not in the horizontal direction. Natural convection boundary-layer equations were modified to allow for a temperature variation at the outer edge of the boundary layer. The model may be used with a step-by-step computational procedure to predict the temperature distribution in the fluid as a function of time for an arbitrary set of conditions. Results computed by using the model were in good agreement with the experimental data.

    Notes: Physical and chemical equilibrium in the carbon dioxide-diethanolamine system was studied by the direct chromatographic method. The amine was present as a coating on the inside of a capillary tube. Carbon dioxide-helium mixtures were passed through the capillary until equilibrium was attained, at which time a sample of C14O2 was injected into the carrier stream. The retention volumes (carrier volume flowed at peak appearance) of concentration and radioactive perturbations were measured at four temperatures and five carrier gas compositions. Static equilibrium solubility of carbon dioxide in the amine was also measured to verify the dynamic results.The theory of reactive chromatographic flow was extended to this system. The concentration and isotope retention volumes, which theory predicts to be different functions of carrier composition, were shown to be self-consistent. The static solubility data was also seen to be consistent with theory and with the direct chromatographic data. The liquid phase of the system appeared to be ideal except at infinite dilution of carbon dioxide. The apparent departure from ideality could be explained in terms of weak ionization of reaction products. Electrical conductivity measurements tend to confirm this hypothesis.Both physical and chemical equilibrium constants for carbon dioxide were obtained at the four temperatures. Gross heat of reaction and apparent ionization heat were also obtained.

    Notes: Nucleate boiling curves and peak nucleate boiling fluxes (P.N.B.F.'s) have been measured for oxygen-nitrogen mixtures of 3.25, 8.35, and 68.5 mole % oxygen and for carbon dioxide free air on a flat horizontal platinum surface from 1 atm. to Pr ˜ 0.95.The nucleate boiling correlations of Kutateladze and of Borishanskiy-Minchenko, which were successful for the pure components, fail for the mixtures at elevated pressures. Of the correlations tested, that of McNelly is most nearly successful for both pure components and for their mixtures at all pressures.The Chang-Snyder form of the Kutateladze correlation for the P.N.B.F. is successful for mixtures up to Pr = 0.75, beyond which it overpredicts the P.N.B.F. No anomalies in P.N.B.F. at 1 atm. similar to those reported for binary aqueous systems were observed.

    Notes: Peak nucleate boiling fluxes (P.N.B.F.'s) for nitrogen, oxygen, argon, methane, and carbon tetrafluoride on a flat, horizontal platinum plated copper disk were measured up to Pr 〉0.95. The P.N.B.F. correlation in the form proposed by Chang and Snyder and various other investigators is superior, for these liquids, to those of Addoms, Noyes, Borishanskiy, and Moissis and Berenson. The P.N.B.F. on a given surface is found to be reproducible to within a few percent, but exposure of that surface to other test liquids or even to the laboratory atmosphere can produce changes of ± 15%.

    Notes: An analysis is presented which extends the analogy between energy and momentum transport for turbulent pipe flow of purely viscous fluids to include drag reducing, non-Newtonian fluids. The correlation by Meyer is used to predict friction factor and sublayer thickness for the drag reducing fluids. The use of the friction factor correlation with the heat transfer analogy makes it possible to predict heat transfer rates from simple measurements of pressure drop and flow rate for the drag reducing fluids. Some recent experimental data for two effective drag reducing fluids and for water are compared with the predicted heat transfer rates, and the mean deviation in Nusselt number is found to be +8.5% for all of the data. The heat transfer analysis predicts a reduction in Nusselt number accompanying a reduction in friction factor for a given Reynolds number and for Prandtl numbers greater than 1.

    Notes: The law of the wall, the law of the wake, and the velocity defect law have been proposed as similarity types of solutions of the turbulent boundary layer momentum equation. Spalding proposed an approximation of the same type as the solution of the energy equation. This study shows these laws to be derivable from a small-perturbation type of solution of the general boundary layer equations for turbulent flow. The limiting conditions where each can be expected to be valid are clearly demonstrated. In particular, the law of the wall is shown to be the zeroth-order solution of the momentum equations when the solution is expressed in the form of a small-perturbation expansion. The first-order perturbation is shown to generate a relationship similar to Coles' law of the wake. Likewise, Spalding's approximation is shown to be the zeroth-order small-perturbation type of solution of the energy equation.

    Notes: Optimal feedback control has been implemented on a fifteen tray pilot scale rectifying column. The results show that excellent control is obtained in spite of major upsets in the feed flow rate and for large changes in the controller set point. Design and implementation costs for the optimal control system should be competitive with those for standard control systems.

    Notes: The Benedict-Webb-Rubin Equation of State has been generalized by expressing the eight constants as functions of critical pressure, critical temperature, and acentric factor. An evaluation of the resulting generalization against the observed P-V-T data of thirteen hydrocarbons and carbon dioxide shows 0.3 to 2.0% average deviations of the calculated pressures from the observed, as compared with 0.2 to 1.4% when using the individual (that is, nongeneralized constants for each component). Standard errors of estimate for 1,464 experimental data points were 0.0089 for the proposed generalization vs. 0.0084 for the original B-W-R Equation.

    Notes: The dependence of extraction efficiency on flow distributions and droplet boundary-layer behavior was investigated in a specially designed sieve-tray extractor. Flow patterns and drop trajectories were obtained from residence-time distributions and photographic observation. Extraction efficiency and continuous phase residence times were determined by a pulse technique.For most runs, flow behavior could be adequately described by the assumptions of perfect mixing in the continuous phase and plug flow of the drop phase. However, drop velocities were higher than predicted by single drop correlations, and the flow pattern was sensitive to minor changes in operating conditions. Observed extraction efficiencies were in good agreement with predictions based on observed flow patterns and the two film, surface stretch, mass transfer model of Angelo and Lightfoot. Approximately 90% of the stage mass transfer effectiveness appears to be due to the drop rise period, and essentially all the remainder to drop formation for the stage geometry selected.The greatest obstacle to reliable prediction of extractor performance is uncertainty as to the effect of operating conditions on flow distribution.

    Notes: In many present day solids-liquid contacting processes and slurry transport systems, the attrition rate of the solid particles is of primary technical and economic concern. Particle size degradation in a transport pipeline may make the delivered solids entirely unsatisfactory for the intended use, or separation of fines from the liquid phase and makeup of attrited solids may be so costly that an otherwise attractive process becomes unacceptable.Pilot scale tests to measure attrition in a slurry system are often costly and very time consuming. For this reason small scale tests have been developed for screening candidate systems prior to pragmatic pipe-loop or pilot-plant tests. Two of these test methods, crushing tests on individual particles, and annulus flow in a rotating cup apparatus, appear to give useful data on the relative attrition resistance of various solids and to provide a basis for estimating the attrition rate to be expected in a flowing system.Results obtained by using these test methods with silica gel in hexane and with molecular sieve particles in kerosene yielded some information as to the predominant mechanisms of attrition for these two types of solids. The brittle, glasslike silica gel appears to fail through impact fracture of small to medium size chips from the large particles, while attrition of molecular sieves results from surface abrasion, probably due to failure of the binder material, and yields only extremely fine products of attrition.This paper, which is based on a rather limited amount of preliminary experimentation, has been prepared in the hope that it may stimulate additional work on the development of useful standardized procedures for evaluating attrition resistance of solids.

    Notes: The vapor phase dehydration of ethanol to diethyl ether, as catalyzed by ion exchange resin, has been studied experimentally and theoretically for the transient state period following a step increase in flow rate. A mathematical model is developed to account quantitatively for the effects of adsorption and surface reaction on the product distribution in the effluent of a tubular reactor. The solution of the model is in good agreement with the experimentally observed behavior.

    Notes: The stationary state hypothesis, commonly used for intermediates in complex kinetics in batch reactor studies, is analyzed in a tubular flow photoreactor. For practical values of the rate constants for the chosen kinetic sequence, it appears that the hypothesis is valid over all but a short entrance region of the reactor for both streamline and plug flow models. Even though the stationary state is quickly achieved, for the normal range of diffusivities, the conversion to product may be affected by radial diffusion and velocity profiles.In the course of the analysis the pertinent dimensionless parameters establishing the behavior of the reactor were identified. These arose from the differential equations expressing the conservation of radiant energy and mass in the system.
