    Description / Table of Contents: Titanium as a material for the chemical industryA synopsis is given of the corrosion behaviour of non-alloyed titanium in pure and polluted inorganic acids, in organic acids and compounds, and in chlorides, based on the results of laboratory tests and practical experience.The corrosion behaviour of normal commercial heat-resistant titanium alloys is compared with that of non-alloyed titanium and of corrosion-resisting titanium alloys with 20 and 30 per cent. Mo and with 0.2 per cent. Pd. The applications of titanium in the chemical industry are surveyed, and photographs of apparatus used in different applications are reproduced.
    Notes: Es wird ein Überblick über das Korrosionsverhalten von unlegiertem Titan in reinen und verunreinigten anorganischen Säuren, in organischen Säuren und Verbindungen, in Chloriden anhand von Ergebnissen aus Laboratoriumsversuchen und Betriebsergebnissen gegeben.Ein Vergleich des Korrosionsverhaltens der handelsüblichen warmfesten Titan und den korrosionsbeständigen Titan-Legierungen mit 20 und 30% Mo sowie mit 0,2 % pd ist angestellt. Es werden ein Ausblick über die Anwendung von Titan in der chemischen Industrie gegeben und Bilder von Apparaturen verschiedener Anwendungsbereiche gezeigt.

    Description / Table of Contents: The corrosion behaviour of steels in contact with mercury and sodium amalgamNon-alloyed steels as well as alloyed steels with a nickel content not exceeding about 20 per cent. are not wetted by mercury even a higher temperatures and are therefore resistant to mercury. In contrast, sodium amalgam has a wetting effect and causes a slight superficial attack through dissolution of the metals in mercury. The degree of corrosion increases with the content, in the alloys, of the metals nickel and manganese which are better soluble than iron. The resistance is increased by a high content of chrome which has an extremely low solubility in mercury. With chromium-soft steels of low nickel content which are least exposed to sodium amalgam attack, the reduction amounts, at 500°C, to about 0.2 gram pr. square metre pr. day or 0.008 mm per annum. If, in addition to sodium amalgam, the material is also exposed to sodium chloride, the corrosion intensity is about three times greater. Alloyed steels are, however, well suited as materials in the amalgam technology whilst non-alloyed steels have not been found satisfactory.
    Notes: Unlegierte sowie legierte Stähle, deren Nickelgehalt etwa 20% nicht überschreitet, werden won Quecksilber auch bei höheren Temperaturen nicht benetzt und sind daher gegen dieses beständig. Natriumamalgam benetzt dagegen und verursacht geringen oberflächenhaften Angriff durch Auflösung der Metalle in Quecksilber. Der Angriff ist um so größer, je höher der Gehalt der Legierungen an den besser als Eisen löslichen Metallen Nickel und Mangan ist. Hoher Gehalt an Chrom, das extrem geringe Löslichkeit in Quecksilber aufweist, verbessert die Beständigkeit. Bei den am wenigsten van Natriumamalgam angegriffenen chromreichen, nickelarmen Stählen beträgt die Abtragung bei 500° C etwa 0,2 g/m2. Tg. bzw. 0,008 mm/ahr. Wirkt neben Natriumamalgam gleichzeitig Natriumchlorid auf den Werkstoff ein, ist der Angriff ungefähr um den Faktor 3 größer. Doch erweisen sich legierte Stähle als Werkstoffe in der Amalgamtechnik als gut geeignet, unlegierte Stähle bewahren sich nicht.

    Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion problems with gas or water cooled reactorsThis contribution deals with the corrosion problems encountered in heterogeneous nuclear reactors cooled by carbon dioxide or water. While in service, the heat exchange medium undergoes a number of changes which are analyzed, and serve as a basis of a discussion of the corrosion conditions.The materials at present mainly used for the compressed carbon dioxide medium are magnesium alloys, beryllium alloys, and alloyed steels. The conventional magnesium alloys of the Magnox type can only be used with temperatures up t o 430-460°C. For higher temperatures, it is necessary to use beryllium, or possibly corrosion-resistant steels. Adequate resistance in water at 300° c is shown by aluminium-nickel alloys, and by zirconium alloy of the Zircaloy and Ozhenit type which, in contrast to the non-alloyed metals, are not attacked by catastrophic corrosion. In water up to a temperature of 360° C, anti-corrosive austenitic steels have been found to be very satisfactory.
    Notes: In dieser Abhandlung wurde die Korrosionsproblematik in heterogenen, durch Kohlendioxyd oder Wasser gekühlten Kernreaktoren zusammengefaßt. Im Laufe des Betriebes erfährt das Wärmeaustauschmittel verschiedene Veränderungen; auf Grund deren Analyse werden die Korrosionsbedingungen beschrieben.Als Konstruktionswerkstoffe für das Milieu des Druckkohlendioxyds werden zur Zeit überwiegend Legierungen von Magnesium, Beryllium und legierte Stähle benutzt. Mit den klassischen Magnesium-legierungen des Types Magnox kann nur bis zu Temperaturen van 430 bis 460° C gerechnet werden. Für höhere Temperaturen müssen Beryllium, eventuell korrosionsfeste Stähle benutzt werden. Genügende Beständigkeit im Wasser bei 300° C zeigen Legierungen von Aluminium mit Nickel Legierungen von Zirkonium des Types Zircaloy und Ozhenit, die im Vergleich mit dem nichtlegierten Metall der katastrophalen Korrosion nicht unterliegen. Sehr gut bewähren sich im Wasser bis zu einer Temperatur von 360° C austenitische antikorrosive Stähle.

    Description / Table of Contents: The electro-chemical behaviour of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide on magnetite electrodesInvestigations have been carried out on the electro-chemical behaviour of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide on magnetite electrodes by of polarisation curves and time/potential curves where the potentials increase and decrease.In alkaline solutions, oxygen is reduced at a potential close to that corresponding to the process \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ H_2 O_2 \mathbin{\lower.3ex\hbox{$\buildrel\textstyle\rightarrow\over{\smash{\leftarrow}\vphantom{_{\vbox to.5ex{\vss}}}}$}} O_2 + 2H^ + + 2e $$\end{document}. Hydrogen peroxide, too, is reduced in concentrated solutions (10-2 M) at the same potential; the electro-chemical process probably concerns the oxygen formed through the decomposition of H2O2. The anodic and cathodic processes are, for H2O2, symmetrical.In neutral solutions, the processes affecting the oxygen and hydrogen peroxide take place with the participation of the redox systems of the iron compounds.The electrode surface is modified during the cathodic and anodic polarisation by means of electron deflections.

Die anodischen und kathodischen Vorgänge sind für H2O2 symmetrisch.In neutralen Lösungen finden die Vorgänge, die Sauerstoff und Wasserstoffsuperoxyd betreffen, unter Teilnahme der Redoxsysteme der Eisenverbindungen statt.Die Elektrodenoberfläche wird während der kathodischen oder anodischen Polarisation verändert.     Description / Table of Contents: The cathodic protection of steel pipes in water and gas mainsMore and more use is being made cathodic protection for underground under-water pipelines. One may choose between protective anodes and protective current. The choice of method depends on the type of pipeline, and on the type of soil. Initially, the application of this method was confined to welded pipelines without branches which had good electric conductivity but could, at the same time, easily be insulated against the soil. Later on, it also became possible to solve the problems militating against the use cathodic protection in the case of ramified pipelines. With the aid of three examples, it is shown that cathodic protection can be used economically with large as well as medium-sized networks, and also f the partial renewal of an existing network.
    Notes: Der kathodische Schutz von unterirdischen oder unter Wasser verlegten Rohrleitungen findet immer weitere Verbreitung, wobei man die Wahl zwischen Schutzanoden und Schutzstrom hat. Die Wahl der Methode ist abhängig von der Art der Rohrleitungen und des Bodens. Die Anwendung war anfänglich auf unverzweigte Leitungen beschränkt, die verschweißt waren und daher gute elektrische Leitfähigkeit mit leichter Isolierbarkeit gegenüber dem Boden vereinigten. Im Laufe der Entwicklung konnten auch die Probleme gelöst werden, welche die Anwendung des Kathodenschutzes im Falle verzweigter Leitungen erschweren. An Hand von drei Beispielen wird dargelegt, daß der kathodische Schutz sowohl bei großen als auch bei mittleren Leitungsnetzen und auch bei teilweiser Erneuerung eines bestehenden Netzes mit guter Wirtschaftlichkeit angewendet werden kann.

    Notes: Der Korrosion der Metalle wird als Funktion zweier unabhängiger Variablen, so z. B. von Konzentration, Versuchsdauer, Temperatur u. a. graphisch dargestellt und mathematisch diskutiert. Dargestellt und untersucht wurden die Fachliteratur: 1. Einfluß der Wassergeschwindigkeit auf die Korrosion des Stahlrohres; 2. Sauerstofflöslichkeit als eine Funktion von Druck und Temperatur; 3.     Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion and scale incrustation problems with the hot water supply of the City of Reykjavik, IcelandIn Iceland, the greatest possible use is made, by the population, of the hot water springs as natural sources of heat. Depending on the origin of the water and its distribution, the pipes show a degree of corrosion, and of scale incrustation on their inside walls, ranging widely from ‚zero‘ to ‚heavy‘.To prevent the damage caused by corrosion and incrustation, the water, corrosion products and incrustations have been thoroughly examined.Insulation is essentially determined by silicates, magnesium constituents and boron compounds. It must also be noted that, in corrosive waters, the content of sulphur in sulphide form is twice as high as in water of low aggressivity. In connection with the research carried out by Mrs. L. Holzapfel, Ph. D., concerning the silica content of plants and the influence on this reaction of FeS, it was concluded that the corrosion of the pipe walls represents a similar process where the sulphur content, in conjunction with the iron, prevents the deposition of the silica in an insoluble crystalline form as it had been found from investigations into the properties of the water and the structure of the incrustations that Icelandic thermal water are able to form protective layers if their incrustations are in crystalline form.When it was found that the protective layers also contained boron compounds, special investigations were carried out which showed that the boric acid content of non-corrosive thermal waters is ten times higher than that of corrosive waters. The formation of a silicate layer is made possible by the fact that these waters have a higher content of boric acid and magnesium constituents whilst the quantity of inhibiting sulphur compounds is greatly reduced.
    Notes: Heißwasserquellen auf der Insel Island werden von den Bewohnern in möglichst großem Umfang als natürliche Wärmequellen ausgenutzt. Je nach Herkunft des Wassers und je nach seiner Verteilung werden in den Rohren starke oder keine Korrosion und keine oder starke Ablagerungen auf den Rohrinnenwandungen mit entsprechenden Zwischenstufen beobachtet.Zur Verhütung der durch Korrosion und Steinablagerung verursachten Schäden wurden eingehende, umfangreiche Untersuchungen der Wässer, der Korrosionsprodukte und der Ablagerungen vorgenommen.Für die Bildung der Ablagerungen sind im wesentlichen Silikate, Magnesiumkomponenten und Borverbindungen von Bedeutung. Zu beachten ist ferner, daß der Gehalt an Sulfid-Schwefel in den korrodierend wirkenden Wässern doppelt so hoch ist wie in denen, die kaum angreifend wirken. Im Zusammenhang mit Untersuchungen von Frau Dr. L. Holzapfel über den Einbau von Kieselsäure in Pflanzen und den Einfluß auf diese Reaktion durch FeS wurde geschlossen, daß im Falle der Rohrinnenkorrosion ein gleichartiger Vorgang stattfindet, wobei der Schwefelgehalt in Verbindung mit Eisen die unlösliche, kristalline Ablagerung der Kieselsäure behindert. Aus den durchgeführten Untersuchungen über die Wasserbeschaffenheit und den Aufbau der Ablagerungen folgte nämlich, daß isländische Thermalwässer Schutzschichten bilden können, wenn ihre Ausscheidungen in kristalliner Form erfolgen.Der Nachweis, daß auch Borverbindungen in den Schutzschichten vorhanden sind, führte zu besonderen Untersuchungen mit dem Ergebnis, daß die nicht korrodierend wirkenden Thermalwässer einen 10fach höheren Borsäuregehalt als die angreifenden Wässer aufweisen. Die Ausbildung einer Silikatschutzschicht wird dadurch ermöglicht, daß diese Wässer einerseits einen höheren Gehalt an Borsäure and Magnesiumkomponenten aufweisen und andererseits die Menge der hemmenden Schwefelkomponenten stark verringert ist.

    Description / Table of Contents: The mechanical properties of metallic materials at low temperaturesKnowledge of the behaviour of metallic materials subjected to mechanical stresses at low temperatures is gaining in importance. Especially in refrigeration technology, e. g. in connection with the liquefaction, storage and transport of gases, one tries to use materials which, while being as inexpensive as possible, retain their strength properties even under unfavourable stress conditions at low temperatures. Under such conditions, both the deformation resistance and the variables characterizing the deformability depend on the crystal structure. It has been possible to achieve a great expansion in the use o f non-alloyed structural steels through the application a1 a special metallurgical treatment of the melts, e. g. through reduction of the quantity of gas dissolved. The range of application of these steels which, depending on the strain and on the possible consequences of fractures, reaches as far as -50° C, is followed by the range of heat-treated alloyed steels which goes down to -120° C. For even lower temperatures, austenitic steels can be used. Because fo their anisotropic behaviour, especially at low temperatures, cast iron/carbon alloys such as cast steel are more fracture-prone than hot-processed materials, unless the irregularities in the stress absorption capacity are largely overcome by suitable annealing treatments. Whilst, in particular, non-alloyed cast iron tends to show, at low temperatures, a reduction in strength when exposed to sudden stresses, both copper and aluminium alloys retain their high impact strength even at very low temperatures.
    Notes: Die Kenntnisse des Verhaltens metallischer Werkstoffe bei mechanischen Beanspruchungen bei tiefen Temperaturen gewinnt zunehmend an Bedeutung. Vor allem in der Kältetechnik, z. B. im Zusammenhang mit der Verflüssigung, Lagerung und Beförderurng von Gasen ist man bestrebt, mit möglichst billigen Werkstoffen, die auch unter ungünstigen Beanspruchungsbedingungen bis zu tiefen Temperaturen ihre Zähigkeitseigenschaften behalten, auszukommen. Bei tiefen Temperaturen sind sowohl die den Formänderungswiderstand sowie die die Formänderungsfähigkeit kennzeichnenden Größen von der Kristallstruktur abhängig. Die Verwendung unlegierter Baustähle konnte durch besondere metallurgische Behandlung der Schmelzen, z. B. durch Verminderung der gelösten Gasmengen sehr erweitert werden. An den Verwendungsbereich dieser Stäuhle, der je nach Anstrengung und Gefährlichkeit eventueller Bruchauswirkungen bis -50° C reicht, schließt sich der der vergüteten, legierten Stähle für Temperaturen bis -120° C; für noch tiefere Temperaturen schließt sich das Gebiet der Anwendung austenitischer Stähle an. Gegossene Eisen-Kohlenstoff-Legierungen sind, wie z. B. Stahlguß, wegen des anisotropen Verhaltens besonders bei tiefen Temperaturen bruchempfindlicher als warmverarbeitete Werkstoffe, wenn nicht durch entsprechende Glühbehandlungen die Ungleichmäßigeiten in der Beanspruchungsfähigkeit des Kleingefüges weitgehend behoben werden Während besonders unlegiertes Gußeisen bei tiefen Temperaturen Zähigkeitsverminderungen bei plötzlich wirkenden Beanspruchungen aufweist, sind sowohl Kupfer-, als auch Aluminium-Legierungen bis zu tiefsten Temperaturen sehr schlagzähe.

    Description / Table of Contents: Properties and corrosion resistance of nickel materials containing molybdenumA fairly detailed description is given of the nickel-cum-molybdenum materials with enhanced corrosion resistance against acids, used for equipment in the chemical industry. The discussion ranges over beat resistance, treatment methods, machining, hot forming, solution treatment, welding methods. The resistance ranges of NiMo30Fe, NiMo16Cr, NiFe22Cr22Mo and other nickel-molybdenum alloys (Ni-0-nel) are plotted in diagrams. Attention is drawn to metallurgical peculiarities and electro-chemical properties, and especially to possible defects with some of these alloys, due to inadequate heat treatment or to welding.
    Notes: Die für den Apparatebau in der chemischen Industrie gebrauchten Werkstoffe mit erhöhter Korrosionsbeständigkeit gegen Säuren auf der Basis Nickel mit Molybdän werden eingehender behandelt: Warmfestigkeit, Methoden der Verarbeitung, spangebende Verarbeitung, Warmverformung, Lösungsglühen, Schweißverfahren. Die Beständigkeitsbereiche für NiMo30Fe, NiMo16Cr, NiFe22Cr22Mo und andere molybdänhaltige Nickel-Legierungen (Ni-O-nel) werden in Diagrammen dargestellt. Auf metallurgische Eigenheiten und elektrochemische Eigenschaften wird hingewiesen, insbesondere auf Fehlermöglichkeiten bei einigen dieser Legierungen durch ungenügende Warmbehandlung und beim Schweißen.

    Description / Table of Contents: The influence of the surface treatment with Fe—C cost alloysThe corrosion of cast steel, malleable cast iron and ordinary cast iron is influenced by the surface of the cast, i. e. the skin, the surface treatment, etc. With the aid of long-time tests extending over 41,600 hours (1733 days), data were obtained from the materials referred to above, indicating the influence of the surface treatment, i. e. the influence of cleansing with quartz sand, hard shot, tumbling barrels, grinding, scrubbing, smoothing, and polishing. It is in this sequence that the corrosion loss was found to increase in the long-time test which was carried out in town water with defined properties.In order to carry out comparisons with steel, reference tests have also been carried out on steel 37, steel 50 and steel 70. The Comparability of the laboratory results with the results obtained from corrosion tests in natural surroundings was specially tested. As far as cast iron 22, malleable iron 40 and 38 and cast iron 50 are concerned, the results were roughly identical.
    Notes: Der Ablauf der Korrosion an Grauguß, Stahlguß und Temperguß wird von der Gußoberfläche, also der Gußhaut, der Putzbehandlung usw. beeinflußt. An Langzeitversuchen von 41 600 h  -  1733 Tg. werden Messungen an obigen Werkstoffen festgelegt, die den Einfluß der Oberflächenbehandlung, also den Einfluß des Putzens mit Quarzsand, Hartschrot, mit Putztrommeln, Schleifen, Schrubben, Schlichten und Polieren ermitteln. In dieser Reihenfolge steigt der Korrosionsverlust im Langzeitversuch, der in einem Leitungswasser bestimmter Eigenschaften angesetzt wurde, stark an.Um Vergleiche mit Stahl durchzuführen, sind die Werkstoffsorten StGS = Stahlguß; GG = Gußeisen; GT = Temperguß; St = Stahl 37, St 50 und St 70 mitgeprüft worden. Eine Kontrolle, inwieweit die Labor-Ergebnisse sich mit Ergebnissen der Natur-Korrosions- Versuche vergleichen lassen. wurde durchgeführt. An den Werkstoffen GG 22, GTW 40, GTS 38 und GS 50 sind ungefähr die gleichen Erkenntnisse ermittelt worden.

    Description / Table of Contents: The adsorption of 147Pm to metal surfacesThe adsorption of 147Pm to different metals and to some plastics has been investigated. It was thus found that the adsorption is completed within a short time already, and that it depends on the type and condition of the solid surface. Moreover, the dependency of the quantity adsorbed of the concentration and temperature of the solution has been determined. With the aid of auto-radiographic exposures of the metal surfaces covered with 147Pm and from other results, it can be concluded that 147Pm occurs in aqueous solution as a radio colloid. Finally, reference is made to the use of the isotope for various investigations.
    Notes: Die Adsorption von 147Pm ist an verschiedenen metallischen Werkstoffen sowie an einigen Kunststoffen untersucht worden. So konnte gezeigt werden, daß die Adsorption schon nach kurzer Zeit beendet ist, und von Art und Zustand der Feststoffoberfläche abhängt. Ferner wurde die Abhängigkeit der adsorbierten Menge von der Konzentration und der Temperatur der Lösung bestimmt. Mit Hilfe autoradiographischer Aufnahmen der mit 147Pm belegten Metalloberflächen kann im Zusammenhang mit den anderen Ergebnissen geschlossen werden, daß 147Pm in wäßriger Lösung als Radiokolloid auftritt. Schließlich wird auf die Verwendung des Isotops für verschiedene Untersuchungen hingewiesen.

    Description / Table of Contents: A rapid method for examining the dissolving rate of metals in corroding solutionsThe aqueous corrosion solution is applied to the metal surface to be investigated by means of a porous carrier, e. g. filter paper. After a certain reaction time, the carrier is removed and the quantity of metal dissolved is determined by means of a special polarographic method. Owing to the high sensitivity of the detection method and the very small volume of liquid, it is possible to determine the concentration of the dissolved metals after a very short time already.
    Notes: Die wäßrige Korrosionslösung wird mit einem porösen Träger - z. B. Filtrierpapier - auf die zu untersuchende Metallfläche gebracht. Nach einer gewissen Einwirkungszeit wird der Träger abgehoben und das gelöste Metall mit Hilfe einer speziellen polarographischen Methode bestimmt. Die hohe Empfindlichkeit der Detektormethode und das sehr kleine Flüssigkeitsvolumen gestatten nach sehr kurzer Zeit die Konzentration des gelösten Metalls zu bestimmen.

    Description / Table of Contents: A method for the laboratory testing of the mould resistance of electrotechnical materialsIt was found that the conditions under which electrical insulating materials have so far been tested in laboratories for mould resistance are much more exacting than, and not really comparable with, natural conditions in a humid tropical or subtropical climate. Usually, the insulating materials are exposed, for 21 days, to a laboratory climate with a constant temperature 30°C and a constant relative humidity of 95 per cent. which corresponds to the optimum conditions for the growth of mould fungi. In a natural humid tropical climate about three to four times a year. In view of this fact, the testing conditions for mould resistance tests have been modified as follows: The 21-day period has been divided into two periods. During the first period, extending over 18 days, the infected samples were exposed to a climate with a relative humidity of 75 per cent. and a temperature of 28°C. In this deterioration so that, as under natural conditions, their mould resistance was lowered. Subsequently, the materials were exposed for three days to a climate with a relative humidity of 95 per cent. and a temperature of 28°C. The results obtained from these tests are in much better agreement with the results of tests carried out under natural conditions.
    Notes: Es wurde festgestellt, daß die Umwelt bei bisherigen Laborschimmelpilzprüfungen von Elektroisoliermaterialien bedeutend strenger und unbervleichbar berücksichtigt wird als bei den natürlichen Bedingungen in den feuchten Tropen und Subtropen. Die Isolaten sind gewöhnlich 21 Tg. hindurch in einer Umwelt mit konstanter Temperatur von 30°C und konstanter rel. Feuchtigkeit von 95% exponiert, d. s. die optimalen Bedingungen für das Wachstum von Schimmelpilzen. In den feuchten tropischen und subtropischen Atmosphären kommt es in der Regel zu einem Verschimmeln der Materialien innerhalb 3- bis 6tägiger Perioden unter optimalen oder diesen nahekommenden Bedingungen für das Wachstum von Schimmelpilzen, die sich erfahrungsgemäß in den feuchten Subtropen jährlich 1- oder 2mal, in den feuchten Tropen 3- bis 4mal ereignen. Mit Rücksicht darauf wurde das Prüfprogramm bisheriger Schimmelpilzprüfungen folgendermaßen umgestellt: die 21tägige Prüfungsdauer wurde in zwei Perioden aufgeteilt. In der ersten 18 tägigen Periode wurden die infizierten Muster in einer Umwelt mit einer rel. Feuchtigkeit von 75 % und einer Temperatur von 28°C exponiert. In dieser Umwelt kam es zur teilweisen Zerstörung der Materialien, so daß sie - ähnlich wie unter natürlichen Bedingungen - für den Schimmelpilzbefall empfänglicher wurden. Hierauf wurden die Materialien auf drei Tage in eine Umwelt mit einer rel. Feuchtigkeit von 95% und 28°C gebracht. Die Prüfergebnisse nach dieser Methode stimmen viel eher mit den Ergebnissen der Prüfungen unter natürlichen Bedingungen überein.

    Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion protection with the German Federal RailwaysWith the use of light-weight steel construction, which reduces the quantity of steel, the application and maintenance of protective coatings aye greatly facilitated. Red lead is the only primer capable of continually supplying oxygen available for activation. In particularly exposed surroundings, even bituminous coatings call for a red lead primer. The top coatings should be applied as soon as possible. Quick drying primers can only be recommended in special cases. Red lead “V 40” can be used in many applications. Carriageway surfacings and paints made from modern yaw materials are continuously examined for their economic use.
    Notes: Durch die stahlsparende Leichtbauweise wird das Aufbringen und die Unterhaltung der Schutzüberzüge wesentlich erleichtert. Bleimennige liefert als einziges Grundiermittel fortlaufend “aktivierbaren” Sauerstoff. Auch bituminöse Anstriche machen in besonders gefährdeter Umgebung die Bleimennige-Grundierung erforderlich. Auftrag der Deckanstriche soll stets baldmöglichst erfolgen. Schnelltrocknende Grundierungen sind nur in besonderen Fällen empfehlenswert. Bleimennige „V 40“ ist vielseitig verwendbar. Fahrbahn-Beläge und Anstrichmittel aus neuzeitlichen Rohstoffen werden fortlaufend auf ihre Wirtschaftlichkeit geprüft.

    Description / Table of Contents: Potential measurements on molybdenum and a nickel-iron-molybdenum alloy in sulphuric acidPlates consisting of molybdenum, a nickel-iron-molybdenum (60/20/20) alloy, and nickel are subjected to anodic stress in sulphuric acid, and the potential against a calomel electrode is measured. The increase of the potential ∊K (m V) as a function of the current density i (m A/cm2) can be described by Tafel's equations ∊K = ∊l + b · log i. The equation ∊l = ∊ + K · log n (where n is the acid normality) also applies. The potentials of the nickel-iron-molybdenum alloy lie between those found for molybdenum and nickel, respectively. The value also depends on the type of heat treatment.
    Notes: Bleche aus Molybdän, einer Nickel-Eisen-Molybdän(60/20/20)-Legierung und aus Nickel werden in Schwefelsäure anodisch belastet und das gegen eine Kalomelelektrode sich einstellende Potential gemessen. Die Zunahme des Potentials ∊K (mV) mit der Stromdichte i (mA/cm2) läßt sich durch Tafelsche Gleichungen ∊K = ∊ + b · log i beschreiben. Weiterhin gilt ∊l = ∊ + K · log n (n = Säurenormalität). Die Potentiale der Nickel-Eisen-Molybdän-Legierung liegen zwischen den fur Molybdän und Nickel gefundenen. Ihr Wert wird außerdem durch die Art der Glühbehandlung beeinflußt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Deterioration of timber in cooling towers. Possible causesTimber in cooling towers is always exposed to exacting working conditions and shows many signs of deterioration. In order to clarify two specific cases of deterioration, the timber of cooling towers (redwood and fir) has been subjected to mechanical tests for loss of mechanical strength whilst the cooling water and circulating water have been analyzed. It was found that alkaline water with iron content causes a marked loss of mechanical strength and that the impregnation of the wood with tar oils has a very great protective effect as it inhibits the corrosion caused by iron nails.
    Notes: Holz, das durchgängig in Kühltürmen harten Betriebsbedingungen ausgesetzt ist, zeigt vielartige Schäden. Zur Aufklärung zweier Schadensfälle wurde das Holz von Kühltürmen (Redwood u. Fichte) mechanisch auf Wertminderung (Steifigkeits-Einbuße) sowie das Kühlwasser und das Umlaufwasser analytisch untersucht. Festgestellt wurde, daß alkalische, eisenhaltige Wässer zu starkem Steifigkeitsverlust (Schwächung) führen und, daß Imprägnieren des Holzes mit Teerölen in hohem Maße zerstörungsschü;tzend wirkt, da dies auf die Korrosion eiserner Nägel inhibierend wirkt.
