    Notes: Summary Four subjects received 5 mg14C-glipizide orally and3 subjects1 mg intravenously. The average absorption of the oral dose was nearly 100% with peak plasma levels occurring between 90 and 360 min. The apparent half-life of plasma radioactivity was approximatively 3.7 h, the disappearance of radioactivity following complex kinetics due to metabolism of the drug. Extraction with CH2Cl2 and chromatography showed that in plasma 85% of the total radioactivity corresponded to unchanged glipizide, but in urine 98% to more polar and more readily excreted metabolites. The urinary excretion is 68% of the dose. The hypoglycaemic effect of glipizide is comparable to glibenclamide. The administration of14C-glipizide to two patients with renal insufficiency showed that the metabolism of the drug is independent of kidney function, that the rate of disappearance of the unchanged glipizide was approximately the same as in normals, but that the “halflife” of the metabolites was increased to 20 h and more.

    Notes: Summary Peak serum concentrations are reached after about 2 h following oral administration of 5 mg radioactive glipizide, and in the case of intravenous administration of 1 mg radioactive substance they are reached immediately following the injection. The half-life amounts to 36 min (compartment 1) and 3.6 h (compartment 2) resp. The distribution volume of the substance is11, 100 ml. — 5 metabolites were detected in the urine; 2 of them remained unidentified; the same metabolites could partly be detected in the serum. — As regards the insulin levels, two peaks can be seen following oral as well as following intravenous administration; the first peak is reached after absorption or after the injection as the case may be, the second one is reached at midday postprandially. — Of the orally administered substance, the greatest share of total activity eliminated in the urine is observed during the first 24 h, 65.2% of the administered activity are renally eliminated during 48 h. The corresponding value for 120 h being 65.4% after oral and 64.8% after intravenous administration. — These data verify complete absorption following oral administration.

    Notes: Summary The urinary excretion of nortriptyline (NT) and five of its metabolites was studied by quantitative gas chromatography in 22 twins and 7 unrelated healthy subjects after single (1 mg/kg) and multiple oral doses (0.4 mg/kg t.i.d.) of NT hydrochloride. A mean recovery of 62% of the dose was found after both single and multiple doses. The metabolite pattern in the urine was qualitatively and quantitatively identical in the two regimes, but there were marked variations in the pattern of metabolites between individuals. The disappearance rate of NT from the plasma was mainly determined by the metabolism of NT to 10-hydroxynortriptyline, which varied considerably between individuals. The data suggest that in certain rapid NT metabolizers, the upper limit for the overall clearance of NT from the plasma (if extrahepatic metabolism is assumed to be negligible) might be set by the blood flow through the liver.

    Notes: Summary Plasma concentrations of phenobarbital were measured in 18 newborn infants for one to two weeks after birth. The drug had been administered prenatally to the mothers as part of treatment for maternal hypertension or toxaemia. The plasma half-life of the drug in the infants (77–404 h) was inversely correlated with the extent of prenatal exposure to it.     Notes: Summary Five identical (monozygotic) and 6 fraternal (dizygotic) sets of healthy twins between 47 and 53 years of age were given a single oral dose of nortriptyline (NT) hydrochloride 1 mg/kg. The plasma half-life, the apparent volume of distribution, and the plasma clearance of NT were estimated for each subject as well as the urinary excretion rate of conjugated and unconjugated 10-hydroxynortriptyline (10-OH-NT). “Steady-state” plasma levels predicted from the reciprocal single dose plasma clearance rate of NT agreed well with those observed in a previous study of the same twins 2 years previously. In the present study, there was a 5-fold range of the plasma half-lives and 2-fold variation in the apparent volume of distribution of NT (assuming complete availability on oral administration). No correlation was found between the plasma half-life and the apparent volume of distribution. Analysis of variance showed that most of the variability between persons in plasma half-life, apparent volume of distribution and conjugation of 10-OH-NT was genetically determined. The plasma half-life and apparent volume of distribution may contribute independently to the total interindividual variability of the “steady-state” plasma level of NT.

    Notes: Summary The rate of absorption of thioridazine varied greatly in ten healthy volunteers who took 100 mg in the morning after an overnight fast. The peak level in blood was also variable and it was reached 1 1/4 to 4 h after dosing. Maximal concentrations in the blood varied widely from 0.13 µg/ml to 0.52 µg/ml. No relation was found between the weight or sex of the subjects and the pharmacokinetics of the drug. The serum half life of thioridazine in three healthy volunteers was 9, 10 and 10 h respectively. In a group of 22 patients receiving less than 5 mg/kg body weight a day, there was a strong correlation between the dose and the morning or evening concentration of thioridazine in the blood. A positive correlation was also observed between the age of the patient and the serum level in those who received doses of less than 5 mg/kg body weight.

    Notes: Summary A two-compartment model of 73HNA distribution has been developed for studying sympatho-adrenergic activity in intact man. After infusion of 73HNA at constant speed in resting normal subjects, the decay curves of the plasma concentration and urinary excretion of 73HNA were plotted against time. Analysis of the curves yielded constants and indirect indications about noradrenaline exchange processes in the extracellular environment. Complete evaluation of the neuronal pools and of the pathways of biosynthesis and metabolism was impossible, but it seemed likely that 73HNA entered small neuronal pools that underwent rapid exchange with the extracellular environment, a point of some interest in clinical and pharmacologic investigations.

    Notes: Summary Ten patients with acute myocardial infarction were studied during treatment with either a conventional or a new sustained-release preparation of procaine amide in order to compare fluctuations in plasma concentration and urinary excretion of the drug during “steady state” conditions. Procaine amide in plasma was measured by spectrofluorimetry and the urine concentration of it and its major metabolite, N-acetylprocaine amide, by gas chromatography. The average fluctuation of plasma concentrations was 3.5±0.1 µg/ml during treatment with sustained-release tablets (dosage interval 8 h) and 4.2±0.4 µg/ml during treatment with ordinary tablets (dosage interval 4 h), i. e. it was 20% greater during treatment with the conventional preparation. There was no difference between the two preparations in recovery of the drug from urine (sustained-release tablets 85.4±3.0%; and conventional tablets 90.3±5.4%). Thus, the new sustained-release preparation of procaine amide administered 3 times daily produced the same range of plasma levels as the identical dose of conventional tablets given 6 times a day.

The model has been used successfully to predict steady-state plasma levels of alclofenac after multiple oral doses. One treatment schedule (initial dose 500 mg, maintenance dose 250 mg five times a day) was administered to two volunteers for five days and the plasma levels of alclofenac determined daily. The latter were in good agreement with computer predictions based on the model. It is now possible, therefore, to select the most suitable dosage regimes for this drug.

    Notes: Abstract The concentration of a drug at its site of action will be affected by the ability of the drug to distribute to and pass through various membranes and tissues. Mechanisms of drug distribution are summarized in this paper and include the differences between intracellular and extracellular pH,active transport systems for drugs, distribution of drugs between fat and water in adipose tissues, the reversible binding of drugs to phospholipids and to various macromolecules including proteins, nucleic acid, and melanin. These mechanisms usually tend to decrease the concentration of unbound drugs at their sites of action, but usually not to the extent one would predict on the basis of in vitrobinding studies. The effects of drug distribution in altering the biological half-lives of drugs in the body are discussed as well as the interrelationship between the kinetic volumes of distribution for drugs and blood flow rates through the organs that eliminate these drugs. These concepts are illustrated for corticosterone levels following intravenous bolus injections and infusions into rats.

    Notes: Abstract The present status of pharmacokinetics is reviewed. Pharmacokinetic models and the basic concepts involved in applying models to blood, urine, bile, and tissue levels of drugs and metabolites are discussed. An outline of methods for pharmacokinetic analyses is proposed. Special emphasis is given to the determination of bioavailability of a drug from various dosage forms. Uses of pharmaco-kinetics in determining sites of drug action and in determining a clinical metabolic profile are suggested. The perturbations of magnitudes of pharmacokinetic parameters among individuals challenged with the drug can be used as a diagnostic tool in evaluating the state of dynamic processes, the presence of metabolic diseases and genetic abnormalities, and the failure of physiological functions. The use of pharmacokinetics and the prediction of chronic dosing regimens are reviewed. Typical curves depicting predicted blood levels on repetitive dosing are presented.

    Notes: Abstract The application of pharmacokinetics to the elucidation of polygenic factors involved in drug disposition is discussed in the context of three questions: (a)How extensive is the variation among individuals in rate of plasma clearance for commonly used drugs? (b)If appreciable variation occurs, what are the relative contributions of genetic and environmental factors to its maintenance? (c) What role is played by polygenic factors in maintaining this variation?Large variance in plasma decay rates for phenylbutazone, ethyl biscoumacetate, antipyrine, isoniazid, and nortriptyline is noted throughout the general population. However, these large variations appear to be controlled predominately by genetic rather than by environmental factors on the basis of studies run on identical and fraternal twins. At the present time, an individual's capacity to metabolize drugs and the effects of various conditions in altering that basal, genetically determined capacity seem to be best indicated by measurements of the plasma antipyrine half-life. While the theoretical advantages of obtaining blood concentrations of drugs as a guide to their more rational administration are evident, several practical problems are discussed in this paper.

This version of COMPT is designed to solve the two-compartment open model of intravenous drug administration. Examples of the results of the operational program are presented. The program is modifiable to permit analytical solutions for other types of systems described by nonlinear equations.

    Notes: Abstract A pharmacodynamic model is proposed and equations are developed for the quantitative analysis of dose-time-cell-survival curves produced by the administration of cell-cycle-specific chemo-therapeutic agents. The essential feature of the model is an irreversible, bimolecular mechanism of drug-receptor interaction which serves as the interface between the pharmacokinetics of the drug and the cell-cycle-cell-proliferation kinetics of the normal and neoplastic cells. A preliminary cell system which allows adequate characterization of the experimental data is a two-compartment model where cells are assumed to exist in their proliferative and nonproliferative phases. The chemotherapeutic model was used to analyze dose-time-cell-survival curves found in the literature for the effects of vincristine, vinblastine, arabinosylcytosine, and cyclophosphamide on lymphoma and hematopoietic cells in the mouse femur. Similarity in the values of the “cell-kill” constants for these drugs on the two cell types indicates that, in the cell systems studied, the proliferative state of the cells is the primary in vivodeterminant of selective chemotherapy.

    Notes: Abstract Plasma levels of amphetamine and phentermine have been measured in man in a crossover study of the pharmacokinetics of these agents following oral administration of resin-bound and soluble salt formulations. The one-compartment open model with first-order drug absorption was fitted to the data from each subject by nonlinear regression methods and provided an excellent fit. Relative bioavailability of the two salts did not differ for either drug. In both cases the rate constant for absorption was significantly lower and less variable for the resinated compound.

    Notes: Abstract A specific, sensitive, and accurate assay for diazoxide in human plasma and urine samples was developed utilizing stable-isotope dilution-GC-mass fragmentography. 3-Trideuterodiazoxide (d 3-diazoxide) served as internal standard, and diazoxide was N-methylated with diazomethane prior to GC. Plasma elimination half-lives of diazoxide ranged within 20–53 hr in four severely hypertensive patients, which did not correlate with endogenous plasma creatinine levels. A rapid infusion over 10–15 sec of an antihypertensive dose presumably resulted in a very transient precipitation of diazoxide due to its limited solubility of approximately 380 Μg/ml plasma. Urinary excretion accounted for 4–6% of the dose within 24 hr after administration in the four patients studied and totalled 19% and 22% in two patients. Renal clearance of diazoxide was below 1 ml/min on the first day following administration and increased to 2–3 ml/min on consecutive days. It was concluded that renal excretion of diazoxide is self-limited by antihypertensive doses in severely hypertensive patients. The major route of elimination in these patients may be due to metabolism.

In each case, serum clindamycin bioactivity concentrations were fitted to a one-compartment open model with an initial lag time. Analysis of variance of measured quantities (serum concentrations and urinary excretion) and of derived pharmacokinetic parameters showed that for every comparison except maximum serum concentrations clindamycin-2-palmitate was not significantly different (at p=0.05) from clindamycin hydrochloride. Clindamycin-2-hexadecylcarbonate gave significantly different values from those for the hydrochloride in all cases except the rate constant and half-life for elimination from the serum. The palmitate was the superior ester and was bioequivalent to the hydrochloride in man.

    Notes: A new model for porous media comprised of monosized, or nearly monosized grains, is developed. In applying this model to a packed bed, the bed is assumed to consist of a series of statistically identical unit bed elements each of which in turn consists of a number of unit cells connected in parallel. Each unit cell resembles a piece of constricted tube with dimensions which are random variables. The problem of flow through each unit cell is reduced, subject to reasonable assumptions, to the determination of the flow in an infinitely long periodically constricted tube. The solution of this flow problem is given in a companion publication. This model, together with the solution of the flow through it, can be used for the modeling of processes which take place in the void space of a bed.As a preliminary test, theoretical friction factor values, based on the proposed model, were compared with experimental ones for two different beds and found to be in good agreement even in the region of high Reynolds numbers where the nonlinear inertia terms are significant.

    Notes: An analytical study was carried out on the effects of mixing on radiation-induced polymerization in which the species initiating the polymerization were not uniformly produced because of a nonuniform dose rate distribution. The analysis is based on the periodic irradiation of fluid elements circulating in a stirred-tank reactor having a high dose rate region and a very low dose rate region. It is shown that the rate of polymerization increases with agitation speed and that the bimodal molecular weight distribution of the polymer formed at low agitation speed moves to a unimodal distribution as the agitation speed increases.

    Notes: A generalized equation of state is developed by combinin a hard-sphere equation with a truncated virial equation and generalizing the reduced hard-sphere diameter as a function of reduced temperature and acentric factor. The new equation quantitatively agrees with Pitzer's table of compressibility factor over wide ranges of gas and vapor states and is always better than the truncated virial equation. Since the terms in the equation are physically meaningful it is capable of being improved systematically by including higher virial coefficients and by using hard-core equations of state for nonspherical cores. The equation is extended to mixtures with well-developed combination rules.

    Notes: Structured design systems are systems which may be represented by generally nonlinear equality and inequality constraints, each of which contains few of the variables in the system. Assuming the existence of an automatic capabity to derive and modify as needed effective solution procedures for sets of structured equality constraints, a two-step strategy for optimizing design systems is presented in the form of two algorithms. An earlier paper presented an algorithm for locating a first feasible point, and this paper presents a companion algorithm based on the strategy known as restriction to optimize the system once feasible.This companion algorithm divides the set of inequality constraints into three sets: the set of those currently being held as equality constraints, the set currently released but being used as search coordinates, and the set of all remaining constraints which are not currently part of the problem. Solution procedures are modified as inequality constraints and are moved from one set to another. Added constraints in the set being held tend to aid the optimization process by reducing the dimension of search space for what is usually a marginal added burden in solving an enlarged set of (structured) equations.The strategy has proved remarkably effective on three relatively simple examples, including a nonlinear 31 constraint, 10 variable alkylation problem.

    Notes: Models are developed to describe sintering of metal crystallites during heat treatment. The growth rate of such crystallites is assumed to depend upon particle migration over the surface of the support as well as on the rate the colliding particles merge (sinter) into a single unit. The theory predicts that the rate of decay of exposed metal surface area S is given as in Equation (1a). The exponent n is related to the assumed size dependence of the diffusion coefficients or of the rate constant of the merging process. It varies from 4 to 8 for diffusion controlled decay and it is less than 3 for sintering controlled decay, that is, when the rate controlling step is the merging of two colliding particles. Diffusion control is associated with strong interactions between the metal and the support, but in sintering control there is a weaker metal-support interaction.

The data can be represented by the equation kT,x = const. σ-λ along the critical isotherm and one near it and by the locus P̂(T). λ was found to be a strong function of x. The divergence of the isothermal compressibility of the mixtures near the critical locus is in conflict with predictions from classical equations of state but in accordance with modern concepts of the critical region.

    Notes: Techniques are developed for using the structural information contained in algebraic equation sets to aid in the study of convergence properties of iterative equation loops.The concept of inverse mapping is applied directly in order to study convergence properties of sequences. For problems in which there exist both a direct and inverse path for the computation of iterative loops, direct substitution techniques will converge via one path and diverge via the other path. When an inverse path existed, the direct substitution method was superior to simultaneous solution techniques for the problems studied. Not all iterative loops have an inverse path. For problems in which inverse paths do not originally exist, rearrangement of the equations of an iterative loop can result in a modified loop for which an inverse path does exist. The digraph representation of an iterative loop aids in deciding whether rearrangements are feasible for a particular problem. When inverse paths cannot conveniently be obtained, direct substitution cannot be successfully used and simultaneous solution techniques such as quasi-linearization are recommended.

    Notes: Particle size measurements of chromium hydrous oxide sols using electron microscopy and light scattering techniques were in excellent agreement. Comparison was based on the most probable diameter and width of the distribution. The normal, lognormal, and zero-order logarithmic density functions provided good first-order approximations to the particle size measurements. The chromium hydrous sols were less than 0.5 μm in size.A closed wet cell specimen holder in an electron microscope was developed to observe, in situ, the chromium hydrous oxide sols. The colloidal particles had a uniform spherical shape with a narrow size distribution. Observation of the particle formation process in the closed wet cell qualitatively supports the mechanism that basic polymeric sulfates act as embryos in the formation of these particles.

    Notes: Gas-liquid chromatography is used to measure polymer-solvent interactions in polymer solutions where the solvent is at infinite dilution. Experimental data are presented for 24 binary polymer-solvent systems in the temperature range 50° to 150°C. A simple relation exists between the experimental retention volume data and the infinite dilution volatility; this volatility can be used to calculate the solvent vapor pressure over the polymer solution up to about 0.1 weight fraction solvent. Using concepts from the Prigogine-Flory theory of polymer solutions, Flory-Huggins X parameters for some polymer-hydrocarbon systems were correlated with the hydrocarbon's normal boiling temperature.

    Notes: Cyclic Polyethers acting as mobile carriers in facilitated transport can cause changes of as much as three orders of magnitude in the fluxes of various cations across liquid membranes. The cyclic polyether dibenzo-18-crown-6 (2,3,11,12-dibenzo-1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadeca-2,11-diene) was used in this work to achieve such a large selectivity. The results show that a primary factor leading to the selectivity is the ratio of unsolvated cation radius to polyether central ring radius. The implication is that by selecting a polyether with a desired central ring radius, any two cations of slightly different radius can be separated efficiently.

    Notes: Atactic polystyrene was molded at pressures up to 3000 atmospheres, and the effects of this pressure history were studied by permeability measurements using helium, neon, and argon as probe molecules. The permeabilities were significantly reduced by molding at higher pressures. The diffusion coefficients decreased monotonically with molding pressure, reflecting more extensive interchain cohesion. In contrast, the solubility coefficients showed a broad minimum around a molding pressure of 1000 atm, indicating that changes in local order were induced by higher pressures. These changes were shown to affect permeation, mechanical characteristics, and other properties. An optimum molding pressure somewhat below 1000 atm is indicated for polystyrene.

    Notes: The Marker-and-Cell numerical technique has been adapted to develop a method of solution for three-dimensional, unconfined, isothermal flow of a highly viscous, Newtonian fluid in a region bounded by two, nonparallel traveling surfaces. Results are reported only for plane and elliptical surfaces, but the analysis is general enough to handle any shape of interest.A computer program was developed which can be used to generate and plot the flow and pressure fields. Numerical results were obtained for the special case of symmetrically opposed convergent surfaces for a wide range of conditions.

    Notes: Molar volumes were measured and partial molar volumes were calculated in the supercritical region, including the vicinity of the critical locus, lor compositions of 1.8 to 20 mole % n-heptane. Molar volumes can he represented, to a reasonable approximation, by the Flory-OrwollVrij (FOV) reduced equation of state. A better fit of the data is possible if the three exponents in the FOV equation are adjusted The irodified FOV equation or the Redlich-Kwong equation, with parameters idjusted to fit the critical locus, can in general represent the partial molar rolumcs adequately along the critical locus only. The prediction of the imposition-dependence of the partial molar volumes is only qualitatively successful at best.

    Notes: The diffusion coefficients D of n-hexane and of naphthalene in a series of hydrocarbon liquids with viscosities μ from 5 · 10-4 to 5 kg m-1 sec-1 (0.5 to 5000 centipoise) have been measured at 25°C with a one Savart plate wavefront-shearing interferometer. This apparatus allows direct determinations at effectively infinite dilution. The values obtained suggest that for a small solute diffusing in a large solvent \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \begin{array}{*{20}c} {D\mu ^{2/3} } & = & {{\rm constant}} \\ \end{array} $$\end{document} a result consistent with earlier studies. The exponent of 2/3 may be rationalized on the basis of the Eyring rate theory.

    Notes: Liquid molar volumes and excess volumes have been experimentally determined for some methane-rich binary and ternary mixtures containing ethane, propane, isobutane, and nitrogen between 91 and 115 K. A gas expansion type system calibrated against pure methane densities was used to make the necessary pure fluid and mixture measurements.The best of the available density correlations predicts the experimental methane-ethane molar volumes within ±0.2%, while larger systematic deviations are found for the methane-propane and methane-isobutane systems. Molar volumes for methane-nitrogen and ternary mixtures containing nitrogen diverge strongly from the correlation predictions at 108 K and higher temperatures. An empirical scheme is proposed for predicting molar volumes of methane-rich liquefied natural gases using reported methane-ethane and methane-nitrogen excess volumes. This method predicts all binary and ternary molar volumes from this investigation within ±0.1%.

    Notes: Multicomponent vapor condensation in the presence of noncondensing gas has been analyzed using numerical solutions to a set of linearized rate equations that describe the simultaneous heat and mass transfer to the condensate film. For specific examples of methanol and water and ethanol and toluene condensing from turbulent air streams in vertical tube and on horizontal tube condensers, it is shown that the alcohol concentrations in both the liquid and gas phases increase as condensation from initially superheated, alcohol-rich gas phases progresses; the liquid phases also become richer in alcohol. The mass fluxes of the vapors vary with their respective mass transfer coefficients and local concentration driving forces. In the vertical tube condensers, the flux of the alcohols go through maximums. Gas phase saturation is approached as the mixtures cool and the final traces of vapor become more difficult to condense. Interface properties are computed from limited VL equilibrium data, heat of solution data, and a predictive equation. The techniques of solution and analysis have general application to the design of cooler-condensers in either vertical or horizontal configurations.

    Notes: Quasi-elastic light scattering techniques have been employed to measure the mutual diffusion coefficient DAB as a function of concentration in eight binary mixtures and the thermal diffusivity x in nine pure liquids and two binary mixtures. The mass diffusivities obtained are typically accurate to 3% while thermal diffusivities are known to be accurate to 5%; both types of values are in substantial agreement with the available bulk values. Under most circumstances light scattering is found to offer distinct advantages over the standard techniques for determining mass and thermal diffusivities.

    Notes: Theoretical models for computing velocity profiles and friction factors for sinusoidally pulsing laminar flow in linearly elastic tubes were derived from the Navier-Stokes equations, a modified Fanning equation, and the pressure-tube wall movement relationship. The theoretical results were checked experimentally for NRe and λ = ωR2/v values up to 2000 and 57, respectively. It was found that the theoretical friction factors predicted the experimental values to within less than 13%. Also the results showed that the energy losses in elastic tubes were greater than in rigid tubes.

    Notes: The thermoelectrogravitational electrophoresis column without reservoirs has been conceived following the principle of the Clusius-Dickel thermal diffusion column. The transport equation approach in thermal diffusion developed by Jones and Furry to explain the behavior of a conventional thermogravitational thermal diffusion column has been applied to describe the electrophoretic separation in the thermoelectrogravitational electrophoresis column. Equations have been established for a system in which one single or one hypothetically single component is mobile and the other species are at their isoelectric points.Theoretical calculations for the velocity profiles, temperature distribution, and the steady state batch separation factors have been made with field strength, temperature difference, membrane spacing, and electric mobility as variables, and expected trends of the results are discussed using the steady state solution of the transport equation for batch operation.

    Notes: The physical and mathematical characteristics of carrier-facilitated transport in a liquid film are examined for a reaction scheme of the form A + B ⇄ AB, in which A is the permeating species and B and AB are diffusable species which are constrained not to leave the film. For thin films, a solution is developed as a perturbation from purely physical diffusion and is expressed as a second-order power series. For thick films, a solution is developed as a perturbation from a state in which the species concentrations at any one point within the film are related by an equilibrium constraint. This development utilizes the techniques of matched asymptotic analysis. Taken together, these solutions provide an excellent estimate of the facilitation for a film of any thickness, as shown by comparison with numerical results.

    Notes: Adsorption from liquid mixtures can be predicted from the adsorption isotherm of the pure unsaturated vapor, measured for each component of the liquid mixture. The theory gives analytical expressions for adsorption from liquids corresponding to Type I (finite capacity) and Type II (multilayer adsorption) vapor isotherms. The free energy of immersion of the adsorbent in the pure liquid adsorbate is the essential parameter for either type of adsorption. Predictions based upon the assumption of an ideal adsorbed solution are compared with experimental data on adsorption from liquid mixtures.

    Notes: The hydrodynamics of countercurrent flow of liquids with a high density difference cannot be predicted reliably from correlations developed with data on fluids having low densities (usually water and organic solvents). Dispersed-phase holdup, flooding rates, and pressure drop during countercurrent flow of mercury and water were studied with several packing materials. Results show that, for a given packing, flooding rates and holdup can be correlated in terms of a single parameter, the superficial slip velocity. For the mercury-water system, this parameter is shown to be proportional to the packing diameter and packing void fraction for Raschig rings and solid cylindrical packing.

    Notes: Structured design systems are systems in which the equations representing the equality and inequality constraints are sparse and highly precedenc orderable. An algorithm has been developed for such systems which is guaranteed, under certain assumptions, to arrive in a finite number of steps at a feasible point (that is, one which satisfies all the constraints) or to identify a subset of the constraints for which no feasible point can be found. The algorithm can be applied to a system with only inequality constraints or to a system with both equality and inequality constraints.The algorithm uses an indirect approach. It hypothesizes that a subset of constraints has no feasible region and then attempts to verify this conjecture. If successful, the subset is identified as infeasible and obviously no feasible point exists. If unsuccessful, either a new hypothesis can be generated or the algorithm has indirectly found a feasible point.Limited computational experience with the algorithm indicates that the number of steps required to find a feasible point for a system of constraints has been of the same order of magnitude as the total number of constraints in the system. For linear constraints, the efficiency of the algorithm has been comparable to phase one of the Simplex algorithm of Linear Programming.

    Notes: Two forms of a generalized Benedict-Webb-Rubin Equation, BWR24 and BWR44, are proposed for dense gases which represent an improvement by a factor of about three in calculated pressures compared to reduced forms of this relationship in the literature. The method is also tested for accuracy in predicting enthalpy departures for pure components and mixtures. The proposed methods are marginally better than the best of other methods tested. Major advantages for the proposed equations are their relative simplicity, low computer storage requirements, and generality. No mixture interaction constants are required other than those already available in the literature.

    Notes: A generalized analytic correlation is presented for activity coefficient. osmotic coefficient, enthalpy, and heat capacity of single and multicomponent strong aqueous solutions. A good correlation for each salt to an ionic strength of six is obtained by assigning a single parameter “B” value to each salt. These B values are well approximated by assigning two parameters for each ion. Values presented for the common ions at 25°C allow the estimation of activity and osmotic coefficients of many unmeasured salt solutions.

    Notes: Diffusion coefficients of binary solutions can be measured accurately by observation at long times of isothermal diffusion in a vertical cell closed at the ends (restricted diffusion). The present analysis, which accounts for the effects of solvent flux and variable solution properties, demonstrates that the experiment yields a well-defined, differential diffusion coefficient, even in concentrated solutions.Observation is effected by Rayleigh interference optics, and results for aqueous potassium chloride solutions confirm the accuracy of the method.

    Notes: The theory of adsorption from binary liquid mixtures on solids is extended to an arbitrary number of components. An equation for the surface excess is derived in terms of the free energy of immersion of the adsorbent, the capacity of the adsorbent at saturation, and activity coefficients in the bulk and adsorbed phases.Experimental data are reported for adsorption from binary and ternary liquid mixtures of benzene, ethyl acetate, and cyclohexane on activated carbon at 30°C. These systems exhibit nonidealities in the adsorbed phase. The theory provides accurate estimates of adsorption from the ternary mixture using data for adsorption from binaries.
