Notes: An efficient and simple numerical technique is presented for analyzing nonisothermal nip flow of viscous liquids. It has been applied on calendering to calculate the design parameters as well as the interaction effects between roller characteristics, operation conditions, and material properties. Viscous heating is shown to drastically change the mechanics near the nip exit if the rollers rotate at different speeds. Consequences for scaling-up and model experiments are indicated.

Notes: The film theory for gas absorption with chemical reaction has been extended to take into account the release of heat due to solution and reaction. The analysis is applied to the industrially significant sulfur trioxide-dodecylbenzene system, and large increases in interface temperature are predicted during absorption. The enhancement factor behavior is correspondingly complex owing to the interaction of solubility reduction and rate constant enlargement. Some initial experimental measurements with the laminar jet technique confirm the need for and the basic soundness of the theory.

Notes: The solubility of sulfur dioxide in seawater in the range 10° to 25°C and 10-5 to 1 molal is predicted based on a simplified chemical model. Estimates are also given of the resulting pH and the attendant distribution of sulfur and carbon dioxide species. Sulfur dioxide is considerably more soluble in seawater or other naturally alkaline waters than in pure water.

Notes: Particle movement in the core and in the annulus of a semicircular, vertical, spouted bed was examined by high-speed tracer photography. Use of a functional analogy with a free jet establishes an equation correlating core air velocity and relative bed height. Dependence of bed void fraction and particle throughput vs. relative bed height shows good agreement with previous work. Particle mean retention time and air flow distribution in the annulus and the spout were obtained by calcualtional estimates.

Notes: The hydrodesulfurization of gas oil is treated as a sum of parallel reactions taking place in narrow boiling range fractions. The component reactions are approximately first order for fractions with boiling ranges of 20°C and mid boiling points between 250° and 350°C. The experimental procedure involves desulfurization of the gas oil, fractionation of samples of feed and products at various residence times, and determination of sulfur concentration in the fractions. The effect of the particle size of the catalyst and of the viscosity of the oil on the reaction rate can be assessed from Thiele's equation.

Notes: Analysis of single-pore behavior in a porous pellet of reactant is used to develop a new model for predicting the conversion-time relationship for gas-solid noncatalytic reactions. The model accounts for the influence of pore diffusion, diffusion through the product layer which builds upon the pore walls, and surface reaction. By focusing attention on one pore, it is possible to include the effects of the changes in pore geometry that occur during reaction. Thus, both pore-mouth clocure and uniform deposition of product throughout the pellet can be predicted by using appropriate values for the diffusional and physical properties of the reaction system. The key parameters of the model are the effective pore length and effective diffusivity in the product layer. Numerical values of these quantities can be approximated from measurements of the pore volume and surface are of the unreacted and reacted forms of the pellet, or they may be evaluated from a limited amount of conversion vs. time data. The use of the model for predicting conversion-time curves is illustrated with available data for the reduction of nickel oxide pellets with carbon monoxide and for the reaction of sulfur dioxide with calcium carbonate.

Notes: The number of overall liquid transfer units as a function of the total pressure, flow rate, and nozzle height has been measured for the removal of butane and F-22 refrigerants from water for a flat spray nozzle in a vacuum spray chamber. The number of transfer units increases with the flow rate and with the total pressure with the increase proportional to 0.2 power of the Weber number in which the gas density is used. NOL also increases linearly with length, but more than two-thirds of the mass transfer always takes place in liquid sheet attached to the nozzle. Because the rate of mass transfer in a spray chamber is much greater than in a packed column, vacuum spray stripping is recommended for the removal of refrigerants from water and brine in the freezing and hydrate processes for desalination and other slightly soluble gases from aqueous solution in other processes.

Notes: A state space model is developed for an existing nonadiabatic packed-bed reactor which experiences axial and radial concentration and temperature gradients resulting from highly exothermic reactions involving several chemical species. The set of partial differential equations is reduced from three to two dimensions using orthogonal collocation. Further use of orthogonal collocation on the quasi steady state version of the differential equations results in a set of coupled algebraic and differential equations from which a linearized low-order state space model is obtained. The model parameters are estimated from reactor data, and the fitted model is used for design and implementation of a multivariable stochastic control schemes on the reactor. These applications are described in parts II and III of this paper.

Notes: Stable isothermal multiplicities were observed during carbon monoxide oxidation in an integral reactor, filled with alumina supported platinum catalysts. The multiplicities were investigated in the conversion-temperature, conversion-inlet carbon monoxide concentration and conversion-mass flow rate domains. The region of multiplicities was found to widen significantly upon catalyst aging which enhanced the pellets' diffusive resistances.Several intermediate stable steady states were found between the highest and lowest steady states, both experimentally and theoretically. All the above phenomena could be well interpreted by the interactions of the kinetics of carbon monoxide oxidation with intrapellet diffusion resistances.

Notes: Carbon dioxide, oxygen, Freon 114, and butane were stripped from deionized water, sodium chloride solutions, and freshly acidified seawater in a vacuum-spray chamber using three types of hydraulic nozzle. Purely physical desorption was found for each gas/liquid system. For both conical-spray and fan-jet nozzles, the bulk of the gas was shown to desorb from the thin liquid sheet issuing from the nozzle, that is, before droplet formation occurs. Behavior was explained semiquantitatively by a mathematical model of the diffusion in the sheet. This model was also shown to predict well the desorption from the laminar liquid sheets formed by jet impingement nozzles. For turbulent flow in jet impingement nozzles, the fit of the model was again semiquantitative.

Notes: A simulation procedure is presented in this work which can analyze the behavior of any dispersed phase system consisting of particles whose random behavior is specified in terms of probability functions. The procedure distinguishes itself from its predecessors in being free from arbitrary discretization of time or any other parameter along which the system evolves, and its ability to predict the behavior of randomly behaving small populations. Where population balance equations, which describe the behavior of particulate systems, cannot be readily solved, the simulation technique presented herein represents an efficient alternative to the modeling of such systems. Tables and a flow chart are given which would enable the use of the method for any system with specified particle behavior.

Notes: Several approaches are utilized for the estimation of the parameters associated with the normalized vapor pressure equation \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \ln P_R = \alpha + \frac{\beta }{{T_{R^m } }} + \gamma T_{R^7} $$\end{document} to develop a capability for the prediction of vapor pressures consistent with the theorem of corresponding states. In this development, conditions and restrictions associated with the critical point and the normal boiling point were used to establish the vapor pressure parameters α, β, γ, and m. For the evaluation of these parameters, five different approaches were applied, and vapor pressures calculated with each of them were compared with corresponding experimental values presented in the literature. These comparisons were further examined using the results of four other well-known vapor pressure equations available in the literature. This evaluation included 138 substances of all types and involved a total of 7,633 literature reported vapor pressure values to show that improved results are possible through the involvement of the generalized vapor pressure equation of this investigation.

Notes: Models have been formulated and analyzed for photosynthesis by algae in turbulent, channel flow. Analytical and computational for results for different stochastic, kinematic models of algal motion have been obtained for two different rate mechanisms. The results indicate that turbulent mixing can achieve an increase in the rates and efficiencies of photosynthesis by realizing the intermittency effects. Optimum levels of turbulence are shown to exist in turbulent channel flow for the mass cultivation of algae. The methodology of this paper is relevant to photochemical reactions in general.

Notes: A laboratory continuous mixed-suspension, mixed-product-removal crystallizer was used to study the effects of temperature on the kinetics of crystallization of potassium nitrate. A differential refractometer was used to continuously monitor the supersaturation permitting the measurement of supersaturation levels of order 10-3Kg solute/Kg water. The nucleation rate exhibited an inverse relationship with temperature.

Notes: Prandtl's eddy diffusion model was successfully extended to turbulent momentum, energy, and mass transfer in nonisothermal free jets by taking into account the effect of change in volume of traveling eddies. The present model was experimentally confirmed for the high temperature, low velocity, turbulent free jets produced by combustion of methane gas.

Notes: Gas holdup and the ratio of the turbulent regime mechanical power consumed in aerated compared to that in nonaerated aqueous phases were measured in two laboratory sized tanks. Standard six-blade turbine (D/T = 1/3), six-blade paddle (D/T = 1/3), and four-blade paddle (D/T = 2/3) impellers were used over a wide range of impeller rotational speed and gas sparging rate. For all systems, the power ratio results were found to fit a semitheoretical correlation (derived from dimensional analysis) involving the impeller Weber number, the aeration number, and the ratio of dispersion and liquid densities. Empirical correlations for gas holdup in water, aqueous solutions of nonelectrolytes, and an aqueous electrolyte solution are given. The overall results lead to the conclusion that power ratio and gas holdup correlations are highly specific to a particular impeller type and are also dependent on the tank size and the liquid phase physicochemical properties.

Notes: An algorithmic-evolutionary approach to the systematic synthesis of minimum cost networks of exchangers, heaters, and coolers is proposed. The new approach is easy to apply by hand calculations, requiring no special mathematical background and computational skill from the user. In addition to generating many cheaper networks for sample problems ranging in size from 4 to 10 streams as compared to previous studies, the proposed method provides an explicit theoretical guidance on the optimal exchange among hot and cold streams and on the optimal locations of heating and cooling utilities in the network. It also has a provision for the use of stream splitting and for generating a cyclic network. The new method is particularly effective in the synthesis of minimum cost networks for industrial crude unit preheat recovery.

Notes: A group contribution molecular model is developed for the thermodynamic properties of polar and nonpolar liquids and their solutions, including energy of vaporization, ρVT relations, excess properties, and activity coefficients. The model is based on the cell theory in which the repulsive forces of molecules are expressed with a modified cell partition function derived from the Carnahan-Starling equation of state for hard spheres. The attractive forces are made up of group pair interaction contributions. Group and interaction properties have been determined for methyl, methylene, hydroxyl, and carbonyl. Extensive comparisons are made of predictions of the model with data for pure liquids and their solutions.

Notes: Diffusional mass transfer across membranes with uniform but low pore densities was studied experimentally as a function of stirring rate and pore area fraction. The results were analyzed in terms of a stagnant film boundary-layer model specially formulated for a heterogeneous membrane containing discrete pores. The overall membrane diffusional resistance is linearly related to the inverse of the pore area fraction of the membranes for a constant stirring rate. An equivalent boundary-layer thickness can be defined which is independent of membrane properties but a unique function of stirrer speed. These experimental boundary-layer thicknesses are greater by a factor of 3 than those predicted by a published Sherwood number correlation determined for homogeneous surfaces, but the stirring rate dependence is in excellent agreement with this same correlation.

Notes: The effect of the ratio of the molecular solute diameter to the pore diameter and adsorption equilibrium on the liquid phase effective diffsivity for different hydrocarbon solutes was studied in two alumina pellets. A semiemprical correlation based on the relative dimension of the solute molecule with respect to the average pore dimension, the equilibrium partition coefficient, and the porosity is proposed for a variety of binary hydrocarbon systems. The correlation shows that the effective diffusivity is strongly influenced by both the adsorption coefficient as well as the ratio of the solute molecular size to the average pore size.

Notes: Diffusion rates of nitrogen and methane have been measured across ten porous solids at 35°C and 1 atm by a steady state flow method. The porous plugs used were cylindrical in shape, with diffusion occurring in the direction of the axis. Diffusion data were taken with porous cores either dry or saturated with liquids. Water and n-heptane were used as saturating liquids. The rather complex internal structure of porous solids were indirectly characterized through some auxiliary measurements. These included porosity, permeability, and electrical resistivity factor (yet another indirect measurement of tortuosity). The effective diffusion coefficients were correlated for the gas phase diffusion as a function of porosity. The ratio of effective diffusion coefficient to the open space diffusion coefficient (De/Do) was correlated for dry cores using the properties approximately characterizing the pore structure.

Notes: The rates of absorption of pure sulfur dioxide into aqueous sodium bisulfite, sodium hydroxide, and sodium sulfite solutions with and without a surface active agent were measured at 25°C using a liquid jet column. For the sulfur dioxide-sodium hydroxide system, the rate of absorption into the solution without surface active agent was higher than that into the solution with surface active agent, indicating the existence of the interfacial turbulence. The absorption rates obtained for the present system under the conditions of no interfacial turbulence were in good agreement with the theoretical predictions based on the penetration theory.

Notes: A mathematical model of combustion in a utility type of pulverized, coal fired furnace is developed by dividing the furnace into a number of isothermal zones. The method dovetails the combustion rate data available for single char particles with a gas flow pattern to predict local combustion heat release rates and local radiation absorption coefficients, which are used as input to a zoned heat transfer model. The furnace heat transfer is shown to be insensitive to combustion related parameters such as coal rank and coal fineness. For carbon in ash, local gas temperature, and to a lesser extent local heat flux, significant variations are predicted. It is concluded that for calculation of radiative heat transfer, combustion data are adequate. Further research activity on ignition and combustion stability, together with the radiative properties of fly ash, is recommended.

Notes: A flow type of apparatus is built to give equilibrium gas and liquid samples at elevated pressures and temperatures while minimizing thermal decomposition. Saturated vapor and liquid compositions and K values are determined with this apparatus for the binary system hydrogen/tetralin (1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene) at four temperatures from 189.6° to 389.1°C, and seven pressures from 20 to 250 atm. Vapor pressures of tetralin are determined with the same apparatus, and values are reported at the four temperatures of this work.

Notes: Completely developed and entry region mass transfer rates in turbulent pipe flow of drag reducing polymer solutions were studied experimentally using electrochemical techniques. The percent change in the fully developed mass transfer rate at a given volumetric flow was found to be greater than the percent change in the pressure gradient. The data are interpreted by using the law of the wall, valid for Newtonian fluids at large Schmidt numbers, whereby K+ is related to Sc-0.74. The proportionality constant is correlated with percent drag reduction and is found to decrease with increasing drag reduction. The use of an analogy between momentum and mass transfer predicts a somewhat greater mass transfer reduction than was observed.

Notes: Previous studies of copper-ion catalyzed ascorbic acid autoxidation have indicated zero-order, first-order, or Michaelis-Menten dependence of rate on ascorbic acid or copper concentrations and first- or half-order dependence on oxygen concentration. A simple mathematical model of gas-liquid mass transfer with liquid phase reaction accounts for the various behaviors. Use of an experimental technique that eliminates the mass transfer step shows that the oxidation rate dependence is first order in copper, half order in oxygen, and Michaelis-Menten in ascorbic acid concentrations.

Notes: The chromatographic method has been used to study the sorption and diffusion of methane, ethane, propane, and cyclopropane in 5A molecular sieve. Both the equilibrium isotherms and the time constants for zeolitic diffusion, obtained from the chromatographic peaks, agree well with the values obtained previously by the gravimetric method, thus confirming the validity of the experimental technique. The results obtained in several previously reported chromatographic studies are reviewed, and it is shown that the apparent discrepancies between chromatographic and gravimetric data arise mainly from differences in the way in which the micropore diffusivity is defined. The relative advantages and disadvantages of the gravimetric and chromatographic methods are briefly considered.

Notes: The influence of surface active solutes on the stability of fluids during phase transformation is examined both experimentally and theoretically. Experiments on the interfacial stability of triethanolamine as it steadily evaporates into a partial vacuum verifies that for high surface tension fluids, spontaneous convection induced by differential vapor recoil is stabilized by the addition of surfactants and that the degree of stability increases with the surface activity of the surfactant. The hydrodynamic stability of surfactant solutions undergoing phase transformation is then examined using linear stability analysis. Results reveal that surfactants have a marked stabilizing effect on the differential vapor recoil mechanism but have essentially no effect on the fluid inertia and moving boundary destabilizing mechanisms. Consequently, the maximum stabilizing effect of surface active solutes on liquids evaporating under vacuum is determined by the criterion for fluid inertia instability.

Notes: Flow regimes for nonfoaming and foaming two-phase downflow through catalyst beds are correlated in terms of the superficial volumetric gas-to-liquid ratio and a force ratio relating inertia plus gravity forces to viscous plus interphase forces. In the pulsing flow regime, the frequency of pulses leaving large (29.2 cm) and small (6.58 cm) diameter beds is correlated with the flow map coordinates.

Notes: Performance of flush drains in gas-liquid separators has been evaluated under conditions of variable gas flow and pressure, liquid height and flow rate, and drain diameter. For the two-phase flow regime, liquid flow rate is found to be independent of vessel pressure or gas flow rate. Transition from weir control to orifice control of liquid flow rate occurs over the range of H/D ratios from 0.4 to 1.5. In this range, simple orifice equations do not apply. Revised design equations for use to determine minimum liquid height for maintenance of single-phase downflow in gas-liquid separators are presented.

Notes: New measurements are presented on the influence of Schmidt number on the rate of mass transfer between a turbulent fluid and a pipe wall. It is found that for large Schmidt numbers the fully developed mass transfer coefficient is related to the friction velocity and the Schmidt number by the equation The experiments are accurate enough to rule out the Sc-2/3 or the Sc-2/3 relations commonly used, deduced from plausible limiting expressions for the eddy diffusivity close to a wall. It is argued that these expressions arevalid only over a vanishingly small portion of the concentration field as Sc → ∞.

Notes: This work involves a quantitative comparison between diffusion (or electrical conduction) and fluid flow occurring in the principal directions of certain simple anisotropic porous media, namely, clusters of parallel circular (or elliptic) cylindrical fibers. The degrees to which the observed macroscopic properties, permeability, and effective diffusivity (electrical conductivity) depend upon the direction of flow are determined analytically. Systems of parallel fibers are shown to be considerably more anisotropic with respect to fluid flow than with respect to diffusion (or electrical conduction), this effect being very pronounced with flattish fibers. It would not appear that any general analogy exists between diffusion (electrical conduction) and fluid flow occurring within anisotropic porous media.

Notes: The droplets that appear in annular gas-liquid flows are formed by the eruption of wavelets from the surface of the wall layer. Ninety per cent of the volume of this dispersed liquid is carried by only about 10% of the drops. We find, as suggested by Wicks and Dukler, that the distribution of drop sizes can be characterized by an upper limit, log normal function with only one of the three parameters, the volume median diameter, a strong function of flow conditions. A method for predicting the average diameter is suggested which is consistent with a theoretical interpretation based on a Kelvin-Helmholtz mechanism, whereby the destabilizing force is the pressure variation over the wavelets.

Notes: The kinetics and product distributions of the thermal cracking of binary and ternary mixtures of ethane, propane, n- and i-butane were determined in a pilot plant under conditions of residence time, temperature, total pressure, and dilution as close as possible to those prevailing in industrial operation. The kinetics and yields observed with ternary mixtures were compared with those obtained with binary mixtures and with pure components. The experimental selectivities were compared with those which would be obtained from separate cracking and subsequent addition of the product streams. The deviations between the two can be predicted by means of the so-called global kinetics selectivities, which are based upon the selectivities obtained from the pure components cracking and upon the global rates of cracking of the feed components in the mixture.

Notes: This paper shows how the rigorous critical state criterion enunciated by Willard Gibbs can be used with a recently formulated two-parameter equation of state to obtain an analytical solution to the problem of predicting the critical properties of defined multicomponent mixtures. Comparisons are made between predicted and experimental values for several systems containing paraffin hydrocarbons and related materials.

Notes: The geometrical parameters of injection devices are shown to have almost no effect on the resulting two-phase flow, while they influence the pressure drop owing to its formation. The predominant hydrodynamic parameter is the ratio of the mean superficial velocities. A simplified analysis leads to good agreement with experimental results. The different causes of pressure drops are quantified.

Notes: A model is described which accounts for partial segregation in continuous stirred-tank reactors by considering packets circulating within a completely micromixed continuous regime. The packets have a nonideal residence time and concentration distribution. Mass transport occurs between these packets and the continuous phase of uniform composition in proportion to their concentration gradients. Laplace transformed tracer responses establish the diffusion and mixing parameters. Over 90% of the system is segregated in unstirred aqueous solutions. Addition of polymer increases segregation by over 40% at a 100 rev/min stirrer speed.

Notes: An isotropic, homogeneous packed-bed reactor is modeled as an array of sinusoidal periodically constricted tubes (PCT). The effective asymptotic bed-Sherwood number has been calculated for mass transfer at large Péclet number with a constant wall concentration and creeping flow hydrodynamics. The bed friction factor has also been calculated. The results for these macroscopic bed quantities depend upon two ratios of the microscopic PCT period length, average radius, and sinusoidal amptitude.

Notes: An analysis is performed to obtain an exact solution to the problem of thermal entry region heat transfer in a circular tube with an arbitrary circumferential wall heat flux for pseudoplastic fluids using the power law constitutive model. The solution is expanded in a power series form, with expansion coefficients and related constants obtained numerically. A simple result is presented for a cosine heat flux distribution around the periphery of the tube which illustrates the simultaneous influence of circumferential wall heat flux variation and non-Newtonian fluid behavior on heat transfer.

Notes: The dual enzyme sequential reactions that decompose arginine to ammonia were investigated experimentally to determine appropriate rate equations and to test predictions of optimal distribution of the two enzymes (arginase and urease) immobilized in a packed-bed reactor. The kinetics of this system were experimentally found to be of the kind that calls for a bang-band control with a well-defined switching point between the two immobilized enzyme catalysts. At low values of reactor residence time, the optimum switching point is shown to approach a limiting position which depends on the kinetic order of the second reaction. In the higher ranges of residence time, the switching point moves into the latter half of the reactor, but exceptions to this generalization are found when Michaelis-Menten kinetics are applicable to both reactions. For the special circumstance where the two reactions are of zero and first order, respectively, the optimal distribution of the two catalysts is independent of the first rate constant. The experimental results are, in general, consistent with these expectations, and secondary deviations are discussed. A suboptimal policy alternative is also treated analytically and tested by experiment.

Notes: A model is proposed for the hopping mechanism of surface diffusing molecules, adsorbed on porous solids, which allows a simple calculation of the mean hopping distance as a function of surface coverage.Surface permeabilities calculated with this model are compared to new experimental data. A satisfactory agreement is obtained, and the values of the parameters involved turn out to be very reasonable.

Notes: Recently reported varieties of photoassisted heterogeneous catalysts are summarized. A cylindrical, light carrying, optical fiber coated with a catalyst layer is evaluated as a novel configuration for all such light assisted catalysis. Equations are obtained which describe the light intensity in the fiber and its surrounding catalyst layer. A dimensionless group of the form Φ = (4αcβcdL)/(df) [d = dc for dc 〈 λ, d = 0(λ) for dc 〉 λ] determines the relative influence of light loss by all absorption and scattering to light transported in the fiber length. An effectiveness factor ηI for heterogeneous photoassisted catalysis is determined for reactions which are first order in intensity and without mass transport limitations. Asymptotic forms of ηI are ηI = 1.0 (Φ ≪ 1.0) and ηI = Φ-1 (Φ ≫ 1.0).

Notes: Current literature describes forced convecting, boiling heat transfer as primarily convective heat transfer. The original evidence for this concept, reported by Dengler and Addoms, was reexamined and found misinterpreted. Nucleate boiling data, instead, correlate with their data. Subsequent use of the concept in correlations and models now requires close scrutiny.

Notes: A method is suggested for a complex statistical treatment of the material balance of a chemical reactor, based on the stoichiometric characteristics of reactions taking place in the reactor. Statistically adjusted values of the balance variables are obtained, and the hypothesis that the material balance data do not contain gross errors is tested. The calculation procedure is demonstrated by an illustrative example of the material balance of a fermentation process.

Notes: Control of sustained limit-cycle instability in crystal size distribution (CSD) was simulated for a class II (high yield) crystallizer equipped with a fines destruction system and product classifier. Control was simulated by proportional control of nuclei density using fines destruction rate as the manipulated variable. The control constant necessary to eliminate instability was theoretically predicted and agreed with the constant found via simulation. Poorer control of CSD (inability to completely eliminate limit cycles) was predicted using slurry density and slurry withdrawal rate as the measured and manipulated variables, respectively. Development of techniques for fine crystal population measurements to estimate nuclei density are necessary for implementation of the former control scheme. The suggested nuclei density control scheme is effective both in minimizing CSD transients and for elimination of instability.
