Notes: Nucleophilic Substitutions to Carbonic Acid Derivates. XII. Kinetics and Mechanism of the Reaction of N-Nitro-N-alkyl-urethanes with Primary Aliphatic AminesThe aminolysis of N-alkyl-N-nitrourethanes takes place, as the kinetical studies demonstrate, by means of several consecutive steps. The nucleophilic attack of the amine (first step; reaction B), as well as the proton-transfere (second step; reaction C), are quick pre-equilibres, followed by the slow, rate-determining elimination of the nitramino-group (reaction D).During the deprotonation, an intermediate with two to the nitramino-group antiperiplanar orbitals is formed, providing the necessary mesomeric assistance of the elimination.

Notes: Analysis of Hydrocarbons by Means of the Mass Spectrometry. V. Fragmentation of Monocyclic Hydrocarbons as a Function of the Ring SizeThe E.I.-spectra of the cycloalkanes CnH2n (n = 5 - 14) and of the cycloalkenes CnH2n-2 (n = 5 - 12) exhibit strongly influence of the ring strain energies on the stability of molecular ions. Medium-sized cycloalkanes and cycloalkenes (n = 9 - 11) show exceptional behaviour under the conditions of the electron impact ionization, which is discussed on the base of ring strain effects.

Notes: Studies on UV/VIS Absorption Spectra of Azo Dyes. III. Empirical Absorption Increments Derived from Azobenzenes and their Relationship to Reactivity Constants, Spectroscopic Substituent Constants and Ionisation PotentialsAbsorption increments ∊ which specifically characterize the substituents are derived from the difference in exitation energy between azobenzene and monosubstituted azobenzenes. These increments have been found to predict accurately the effect of substituents of the long wave π → π* band of polysubstituted azobenzenes.Comparison of the ∊ values with HAMMETT-σ reactivity constants reveals direct proportionality between the two sets of constants. There is also a direct proportionality between the increments and spectroscopic substituent constants introduced by BLOOR and COPLEY. Furthermore, a correlation of the ∊ values with the ionization potentials of substituents was found.

Notes: Aluminium Alkyls with Heteroatoms. X. Electron Impact Fragmentation of TrimethylsilylalkanonesIt has been shown that the fragmentation of trimethylsilyl alkanones on electron impact proceeds with a uniform mechanism which differs from that of silicon-free ketones by the fact, that no α cleavage is observed. It consists of a McLafferty rearrangement at the silicon-free alkyl group, followed by a McLafferty-type cleavage involving migration of the silyl group to yield the radical ion of the respective trimethylsilyl enolether.

Notes: The Darzens Reaction with ThiazolaldehydesThe reaction of formyl-phenyl-thiazoles 3-9 with ω-chloracetophenone 1 and p-nitrobenzyl chloride 2 was studied. It is shown that the Darzens reaction occurs easily with the 4-formyl derivates. There is some competition by the Cannizzaro reaction. The structure of isomers 16Z and 16E was established by 1H-n.m.r. spectroscopy.

Notes: Conductometric and Spectroscopic Investigations of the Interaction of Lewis Acids with Halide ComplexesThe interaction of counter ions with Lewis acids has been investigated using mode systems of the type (C6H5)3C⊕ MXn+1⊖ (M = Sb, As, B, Fe; X = Cl, F) by means of conductometrical and UV-spectroscopic methods. The changes of conductivity were strongly dependent on the nature and concentration of the Lewis acid. The results point to 1:1-complexes between Lewis acids and counter ions. The behaviour was found to be complicated by dissoziation resp. assoziation processes. Ligand exchange reactions between Lewis acid and counter ion have also been found.

Notes: Azoperoxides. VI. Selective Decomposition of β-AzoacylperoxidesThe selective decomposition of the O—O-Groups in the azoperoxides 1 and 2 is possible by reaction with dimethylaniline at 35°C. Rate constants were measured and the decomposition products were analyzed. Intermediates are azoalkyl radicals. The radical yield of the amine induced decomposition of 2 in ethylbenzene is 8.2% at 35°C.UV irradiation of the azoperoxides 1 and 2 at 20°C in ethylbenzene results in a quantitative and selective decomposition of the azo groups. Intermediates are C-radicals with intact peroxide groups. The reaction of 1 and 2 with triethylstannane yields reduction products of the O—O-groups and the N=N-groups, respectively.

Notes: Proton-Catalyzed Disulfide Exchange of S-Alkylthio Cysteine DerivativesAlthough N-unprotected S-alkylthio cysteine derivatives are relatively stable in acid solutions, N-acylsubstituted and N-urethane protected S-alkylthio cysteines react easily by disulfide exchange. As a rule the frequently used tert.-butyloxycarbonyl amino protecting group, present in ethylthio cysteine derivatives can′t be removed selectively without disulfide cleavage, whilst the 2-(p-biphenylyl)isopropyloxycarbonyl and the 2-phenyl-isopropyloxycarbonyl amino protecting groups are removable without any structure change of the alkylthio thiol protecting groups. It is advisable to realize this acid demasking of the amino groups by means of weak deblocking reagents. Comperative experiments in acid solution prove S-tert.-butylthio group to be the most stable protecting function, whilst isopropylthio cysteine derivatives are more stable than the corresponding S-ethylthio compounds. All these results and experiments with addition of different thiols as well as u.v.-spectroscopic investigations indicate, that the observed acid catalyzed disulfide exchange proceeds via a carbonyl neighbouring group effect and formation of thiazolidinium and thiazolinium intermediates, respectively.

Description / Table of Contents: Azomethine-Imines. I. To the Photoreversibility of the System Azomethine-Imine/Diaziridine,Investigated on Pyrazolidone-Azomethine-IminesPyrazolidone-azomethine-Imines of the type 1 with polycyclic aromatic substituents R undergo a photoreversible reaction to diaziridines 2. In the u.v./VIS-spectra of the two forms 1 and 2 the difference of the λmax-values is about 100 nm. Therefore this system is suitable as a new reversible photochromic system. The influence of substituents R′ to the u.v./VIS-spectra of the 1.3-dipolar form 1 is discussed.

Notes: 31P-NMR Investigation of N-Aryl-substituted Iminotriphenylphosphoranes: Hammett Relationship between 31P Chemical Shift and Substituent ConstantsThe 31P chemical shifts of p- and m-substituted N-arylimino-triphenylphosphoranes reflect the electronic influence of the substituents and can be correlated by a Hammett relationship. This new correlation was used for the estimation of σ- resp. σ-values for p-(CH3)2N-, p-C6H5CO- and p-C6H5—N = N-groups as well as for β-naphthyl- and pyridyl(4)-rings. The applicability of a similar Hammett equation for the o-substituted compounds is not possible.

Notes: Reactions of 3-Aroylimino-3H-1,2-dithiolesThe thiolates 3 and 10 prepared from 3-aroylimino-4-aroylthio-5-cyano-3H-1,2-dithioles 1 with bases, react with alkylhalides and acylhalides to the corresponding 4-S-substituted compounds 6, 11 and 7, respectively. Treatment of the thiolates with 1-chloropropanone gives the bicyclic compound 12 by intramolecular cyclization involving the 5-cyano-group. 3,6-Bis-(acylimino)-3H,6H-[4,3-c] [1,2]-dithioles 2 or 8 are prepared from the S-acylated dithioles 1 or 7 and sulphur in pyridine/benzene. 1,2,4-Triazines 13 are formed by the reaction of dithiol es 1 orthiolates 3 with phenylhydrazine. The thiolates give upon protonation the mesoionic dithioliumthiolates 4. Coordination compounds are obtained from the reaction of the thiolates with cations of 3d-elements. On the basis of the chemical behaviour of the new 3-acylimino-1,2-dithioles and the results of spectroscopic measurements a strong bonding interaction between the N-acyl-carbonylgroup and the dithiole ring system in these compounds is supposed.

Notes: Polymerization of Vinyl Compounds in the Presence of Titanium(III)ChlorideThe polymerization of styrene, acrylonitrile and some methacrylates initiated by a titanium(III) chloride dichloroacetic acid redox system was studied. The monomer selectivity of the polymerization in the presence of titanium(III) chloride was found to be affected by a reductive termination reaction. Titanium(III) chloride acts as a retarder in the polymerization of styrene initiated by azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN). The polymerization of polar monomers like acrylonitrile, methyl, ethyl and propyl methacrylate by AIBN is inhibited by titanium(III) chloride.

Notes: Studies on Sulphochlorination of Paraffins. VIII. Studies on the Hydrolysis of Individual Alkane Sulphochlorides by Sodium HydroxideThe hydrolysis of individual C1—C5 alkane sulphochlorides by sodium hydroxide in dioxane/water (1:1) was kinetically studied at 25°C by means of stopped-flow technique, measuring the change of electric conductivity. The rate constants were influenced by steric hindrance, but in all cases were higher than the rate constant for alkaline hydrolysis of benzene sulphochloride, which cannot react according to the elimination-addition (sulphene) mechanism. The reaction enthalpy of the alkaline hydrolysis of four individual alkane sulphochlorides was determined by a simple calorimetric apparatus; the average value amounts to δRH = -239 kJ mol-1.

Notes: Transformation of dependent variables as, for example, the Kirchhoff transformation, is a classical tool for solving nonlinear partial differential equations. This approach is used here in connection with the finite element method and explained first in case of nonlinear heat conduction problems without phase change. The main applications of the method given in the paper concern a nonlinear degenerate parabolic equation for fluid flow through a porous medium and Stefan (moving boundary) problems.

Notes: Fourier analysis of numerical accuracy has traditionally concentrated on the propagation behaviour of various methods. When systems of equations in more than one unknown are involved, analysis of propagation accuracy alone is shown to be incomplete. A distribution factor is introduced to complement the Fourier analysis in these cases, and application of the concept to two problems commonly encountered in the water resources field is demonstrated. The distribution factor is shown to provide important information which cannot be obtained from the customary analysis of propagation accuracy.

Notes: Efficient solution of boundary value problems for time-dependent inelastic deformation in metallic structures is of great practical importance. These problems are generally solved by finite element methods and separate descriptions for time-independent plasticity and time-dependent creep are normally used. The boundary-integral equation method was recently applied for the first time to such problems. This paper presents a very efficient numerical implementation of the method with a linear description of the relevant variables over each boundary element and a newly developed Euler-type time-integration scheme with automatic time-step control for time integration. Numerical results for plates in plane stress with and without cutouts, under different loading histories, are presented. A combined creep-plasticity constitutive theory with state variables is used to model material behaviour. The results are more accurate and are obtained with much less computational effort compared to a previous attempt with an uniform description of variables over each boundary element and a predictor-corrector scheme for time integration. The computer program developed is quite general and can handle plane stress problems for plates of arbitrary shapes subjected to arbitrary time-histories of loadings. The numerical results presented in the paper are for certain illustrative problems.

Notes: A finite element program capable of analysing finite plane strain deformations of incompressible rubberlike (Mooney-Rivlin) materials has been developed. Two problems, namely a long wall loaded uniformly in two directions and a thick-wall cylindrical pressure vessel loaded internally, have been solved. The computed values of displacements, strains, stresses and hydrostatic pressure agree very closely with their values obtained analytically.

Notes: Several computer codes have incorporated the ‘overlay’ material models: the volume element, which is characteristic of the material, is composed of sub-elements with different kinematic hardening, perfectly plastic or even viscoplastic flow rules and different elastic properties, these sub-elements exhibiting all, however, the same total strain.1,2In this paper it is demonstrated how the simple mathematical framework we first proposed for elastic-plastic structures with kinematic hardening material,3 and we extended to some elastic viscoplastic ones,4 can easily be applied to these particular ‘overlay’ materials. One of the interesting advantages of this approach is a straightforward analysis of structural response under cyclic loadings by applying the linear elastic analysis.

Notes: This paper presents numerical results calculated by the extended field method for the problem of the forced harmonic vibration of two plates - one rectangular and one triangular. The numerical results demonstrate that the extended field method, which is a deflection-based series solution method, is capable of producing converged stress solutions suitable for being bases of comparison for other approximate methods of analysis.

Notes: A numerical Laplace transform inversion technique is described, which is a modification of the inversion method using an exponential series representation. By adding an auxiliary function and using Erdélyi's inversion formula, the proposed technique provides the inverse approximation with improved accuracy near t = 0. Numerical illustrations shows that this procedure also works in cases when the original method of schapery fails to give satisfactory results.

Notes: The post-buckling behaviour of a cantilever column of variable moment of inertia with tip load is studied by means of a simple numerical iterative scheme. The governing equation of equilibrium is formulated using the axial and transverse displacement quantities, and applying linear constitutive and nonlinear kinematic relations. Numerical results obtained by numerical iterative procedure are presented in the form of curves showing the relation between non-dimensional tip-deflection and non-dimensional load for different values of shear correction factors and taper ratios.

Notes: This paper evaluates the relative merits of the band-schemes over the frontal-routines in the solution of the linearized algebraic equations resulting from a nonlinear structural analysis. Through examples it is shown that the use of the former in the nonlinear analysis programs results in considerable savings in computer time. This is especially so when the structure under consideration is subject to dynamic loads due to earthquakes or simulated ground motions.

Notes: A concise and efficient algorithm is presented for deriving finite element shape functions from an arbitrary set of independent functions. Based on special one-dimensional interpolatory schemes derived via the algorithm, a variety of two- and three-dimensional interpolatory schemes are developed which are useful for modelling singular behaviour. The methodology presented is general and may be fruitfully applied to the development of ‘special’ finite element shape functions for a variety of other situations.

Notes: This paper presents isoparametric finite element formulation for special classes of elements referred to as ‘transition elements’ for axisymmetric stress analysis. The transition elements are necessary for applications requiring the use of both axisymmetric solids and axisymmetric shells. These elements permit transition from the axisymmetric solid portion of the structure to the axisymmetric shell portion. The element properties are derived and presented in detail. Numerical examples are also presented to demonstrate the accuracy and applications of such elements.

Notes: Hybrid elements for the representation of elastic media are based upon extended variational principle. In the discretization process the hybrid deformation model requires an expansion of the displacement field as well as of the Lagrange multipliers at the boundary. Using an extension of the common shape function concept, these hybrid elements can be reduced to the basis of the simple minimum principle of potential energy with only one expansion of the displacements. An application to plate elements is given and a discussion about some consequences of the approach.

Notes: The structural design problem is acknowledge to be commonly multi-criteria in nature. The various bases for multi-criteria optimization methodologies are outlined and a computationally viable method for generating Pareto optimal solutions is adopted for the structural design problem where the criteria may be non-commensurable. A numerical example on optimal truss design illustrating non-commensurable criteria is given.

Notes: We describe a dual linear programming algorithm for solving the discrete Chebyshev (or l∞) approximation problem subject to any type of linear constraints. The numerical results provided here indicate that the present algorithm is an efficient extension of the Barrodale and Phillips Chebyshev algorithm, to which it reduces in the absence of constraints.

Notes: A frontal-skyline method is presented which allows for compact skyline storage while using the frontal method. It is shown that the method requires the same minimum core storage as the frontal method and fewer transfers to and from disc than the blocked-skyline method. Subroutines necessary for its implementation with finite element codes are given.

Notes: A quadratic method is presented for solving the eigenvalue problem of a structural system having a large number of degrees-of-freedom. The eigenproblem is reduced to a smaller problem by condensing the system stiffness and mass using Guyan reduction. Application of a set of corrective displacements to the reduced system subsequently leads to an eigenproblem of quadratic form involving an additional mass term. To obtain the solution to the reduced problem, inverse iteration with spectrum shifts based on the eigenvalues of the Guyan problem is used. The resulting eigenvalues and mode shapes represent a corrected Guyan approximation to the solution of the unreduced system. In addition, it is shown that the amount of improvement over the Guyan solution can be approximated by employing a first-order error analysis procedure. Numerical examples of vibrations of a bar, a beam and a plate demonstrate that the solutions obtained from the quadratic reduction procedure are very accurate and require relatively little additional computational effort in comparison with the solutions of the corresponding linear eigen-problem. The relationship of the present method to that proposed by Przemieniecki is illustrated by an example.

Notes: This paper presents isoparametric formulation for the three-dimensional transition finite elements. The transition finite elements are necessary for applications requiring the use of three-dimensional isoparametric solid elements and the curved shell elements. These elements provide proper connections between the two portions of the structure modelled with three-dimensional solids and the curved shell elements. The element properties are derived and presented in detail. Numerical examples are also presented to demonstrate the accuracy and the applications of such elements in three-dimensional stress analysis.

Notes: For the case of free edges which are loaded, follower forces remaining normal to the middle surface of a shell throughout the deformation history do not have a load potential. In finite element analysis, this results in an unsymmetric pressure stiffness matrix. Depending on the structure of the available computer program, implementation of an equation solver permitting solution of unsymmetric simultaneous systems of algebraic equations may be a tedious task. This explains the significance of the topic of symmetricability of pressure stiffness matrices, turning out to be of special importance in the case of static buckling under the assumption of a linear prebuckling path.At first, incremental equations for tracing the nonlinear load-displacement path are derived. Thereafter, the buckling condition is deduced. Then, it is demonstrated that symmetrization of the pressure stiffness matrix is admissible if the so-obtained ‘buckling pressure’ differs ‘very little’ from the ‘buckling pressure’ resulting from an alternative symmetric ‘buckling matrix’, as is shown to be the case for a simply supported cylindrical shell with a free upper edge, subjected to hydrostatic external pressure. The alternative symmetric ‘buckling matrix’ is a consequence of deleting the virtual work term, causing the unsymmetry of the pressure stiffness matrix, in the expression for the external virtual work. A mechanical interpretation of this virtual work term is given. It is shown to be equal to the difference of virtual work of the original pressure load and of a ‘substitute pressure-field’, of the form of a Fourier series of the former. This explains why, normally, the buckling coefficient resulting from the ‘substitute pressure-field’ represents a good approximation to the buckling coefficient stemming from the original pressure load.

Notes: The two-dimensional Poisson equation is solved by the finite element method which uses rectangular elements and the bilinear shape function. Two kinds of weighting functions are employed, which correspond to the Galerkin method and the control-volume method. The results for three test problems, for which exact analytical solutions are available, show that the control-volume method leads to errors that are about one-half of the errors given by the Galerkin method. Incidentally, the five-point finite difference method is found to give errors which are nearly equal to those for the Galerkin method.

Notes: The method of initial strain is replaced by a method of initial displacements and applied to simple four-noded membrane and shell elements. The thermal stresses in nodes are improved for quadrilaterals and hexahedrons, which have a discrepancy between interpolation functions for temperature (linear) and strains (constant). To get initial displacements, the singular element stiffness matrix has to be inverted. Minor changes in subroutine MINV3 (enclosed version STDMNV) were made to do this.

Notes: This paper discusses the Bossak-Newmark algorithm, which is an extension of the well-known Newmark algorithm1 for the numerical integration of the equations of discretized structural dynamics problems. The extra parameter introduced here enables the method (when used on the test equation ẍ = -ω2x) to be simultaneously second order, unconditionally stable and with positive artificial damping.Comparisons are made with another modification of Newmark introduced by Hilber, Hughes and Taylor2.

Notes: This paper is concerned with the optimal shape design of plane or axisymmetric structures in order to minimize the stress concentration factor along the boundary. This boundary is described by straight lines and circles. The structure is analysed using the finite element method, and the optimization procedure is based on an extended interior penalty function. Three example problems are reported.

Notes: The problem of optimal design of the shape of an internal or external boundry of an elastic bar in torsion is formulated by assuming the boundary shape is described by a set of prescribed shape functions and a set of shape parameters. The optimization procedure is reduced to determination of these parameters. For constant volume or material cost constraint, the optimality conditions are derived for the case of maximizing of torsional rigidity of elastic bars of linear material. The optimal shape problem is next formulated by means of the finite element method and the interative solution algorithm is discussed by using the optimality crieria. Several simple numerical examples are included.

Notes: A method is presented for solving field problems using a finite element formulation, to be executed with the aid of a micro-computer. In order to reduce the requirements regarding memory space, the coefficients of the matrix defining the system of equations are not stored, but calculated when they are needed, in a modification of the usual finite element procedure. The method is applicable to all problems for which Gauss-Seidel iteration converges, and can handle problems involving more than 100 degrees-of-freedom on a computer with 8,000 bytes memory. Computing time may run up to several minutes per cycle of iteration, but on a small, personal computer, this is still acceptable.

Notes: Geometric programming is a powerful technique and its application to mechanism synthesis has not been fully explored. In this paper, slider-crank mechanism is chosen since the objective function consists of a large number of terms while there are only two design variables. Thus the degree of difficulty is more and does not lend itself to easy application of the geometric programming. Here, modification of the objective function is suggested so that the degree of difficulty reduces to zero even when the working space constraint is imposed. This results in a near optimum solution. Application of signomial geometric programming is illustrated through a numerical example.

Notes: A finite element formulation for the adhesive of a lap joint is presented. The element is based on the assumptions common to the theories of Goland and Reissner and Ojalvo and Eidinoff. Deficiencies of the lap joint theories of those workers and of a previous finite element formulation of the adhesive are pointed out and the covergence of the new formulation to their results is discussed. Experimentally determined extreme fibre strains in the adherends are compared with those determined numerically using the new finite element formulation.

Notes: A general analytical and numerical procedure, based on the linear theory, is outlined for the elastic stress and deflection analysis of complex shells of revolution with arbitrary stiffness and density distributions, under arbitrary static and dynamic loads. The equations of motion admit shear deformation and rotary inertia. A numerical solution is obtained by recourse to Fourier expansion for the circumferential direction, to finite differences for the meridonial direction, and to Houbolt's method for the time domain. Numerical results are presented.

Notes: Finite elements with polynomial interpolation functions of a degree higher than 2 are used comparatively little on large FEM systems, except in shell elements. However, the author has had several years' experience in the use of the so-called ‘isoparametric, reduced Hermitian element’,4 Which has behaved excellently in an industrial as well as an educational environment. The reason for the interest in the Hermitian concept is that the overcompatibility of the element reduces the number of unknowns, the solution time and the discontinuities in stresses between elements.Explicit formulae for the family of interpolation polynomials of order q and degree p = 2q + 1 are given and hierarchical Hermite elements are introduced. The families of Hermite and serendipity elements are isomorphic and the latter may thus be extended to arbitrary high order. For some problems the equidistant node configuration in Lagrange elements of degree 3 and higher is not optimal with respect to smoothness, and a new type of element, the ‘Lobatto element’, is introduced. The methods consistently produce results of an accuracy which is above the requirements of usual engineering applications, but in graphics smoothness of curves is important for a convincing representation. The methods are of particular interest in industries working with structures composed of almost linear materials with well-known properties.

Notes: An assessment of flat triangular plate bending elements with displacement degrees-of-freedom at the three corner nodes only is presented, with the purpose of identifying the most effective for thin plate analysis. Based on a review of currently available elements, specific attention is given to the theoretical and numerical evaluation of three triangular 9 degrees-of-freedom elements; namely, a discrete Kirchhoff theory (DKT) element, a hybrid stress model (HSM) element and a selective reduced integration (SRI) element. New and efficient formulations of these elements are discussed in detail and the results of several example analyses are given. It is concluded that the most efficient and reliable three-node plate bending elements are the DKT and HSM elements.

Notes: The identification (or ‘calibration’ or ‘inverse’) problem with in this paper, can be outlined as follows. The ‘real system’ is a deep rock formation which can be regarded as isotropic and elastoplastic. A mathematical-numerical model, intended for the analysis of its response to excavations, rests on the assumption of an elastic-perfectly plastic Mohr-Coulomb constitutive law and of a homogeneous isotropic initial (in situ) stress state. The values of cohesion, friction angle and initial stress to be introduced in this model are identified by minimizing a measure of the discrepancy (error) between theoretical and experimental relationship (pressure vs. average diameter increase), concerning a standard pressure tunnel test carried out well inside the nonlinear range. For the error minimization process, two very general ‘search techniques’ are adopted and discussed from the computational standpoint: the flexible polyhedron (modified simplex) strategy and the alternating variable strategy in the Rosenbrock version. Both are found to be adequate for solving this inverse problem, when the mathematical model has to be use as a ‘black box’ in a purely numerical identification process.

Notes: This paper is concerned with the mechanics and computation of the performance of a high energy chemical laser of the HF type. The analysis requires solving the-viscous, compressible supersonic flow equations which are coupled to the chemical and optical characteristics of the flowing gas media. A finite element method is chosen for performing the computation. The physical system simulated in the work consists of the supersonic mixing of the two flows; one flow consists of hydrogen gas where as the second flow is rich in fluorine gas. Perpendicular to the flow, an optical cavity provides for reflection and amplification of radiation characteristic of the output of the HF laser system. The HF system achieves a population inversion of the HF molecule as a result of the chemical reaction between H2 and F. This reaction also provides heat which couples with the fluid mechanics as an influence on the flow field. This paper will discuss the nonlinear nature of the problem, will present the finite element method used to solve the problem, and will compare results with others who have used finite difference methods for solution.

Notes: In order to break the present deadlock of finite element non-linear analysis in solid mechanics, the importance of consideration of slip phenomena in inelastic problems is pointed out and a series of new simplified elements are introduced which may be powerful in the discrete analysis of highly non-linear problems.

Notes: Numerical experiments on the stepwise smoothing of non-uniformly-spaced-two-dimensional arrays of data by a simple and computationally inexpensive method have been performed. The method can readily be extended to more than two dimensions and the degree of smoothing can be improved by iteration. The method appears to be most efficient when the orientation of the reference axes is close to that of the curves which the data follow.

Notes: The purpose of the paper is two-fold: Firstly, we develop stream function--vorticity and primitive variable finite element models of two-dimensional barotropic equations that satisfy the conservation of mean vorticity, mean squared vorticity (or enstrophy) and mean kinetic energy, and scondly, we present a comparative study of a number of numerical schemes for their accuracy in phase speed as well as in amplitude calculations for a two-dimensional, time-dependent, stream function--vorticity equation for periodic fluid motion in a channel. A circular vortex is placed in a uniform channel flow of a constant velocity (U) as an initial condition. An analytic solution exists for the problem such that the vortex moves with a constant speed U conserving the shape of the vortex: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ \begin{array}{*{20}c} {\psi \left({x,y,0} \right) = - Uy + \psi _0 \exp \left[{ - a^2 \left({x^2 + y^2 } \right)} \right] \equiv F\left({x,y} \right)} \hfill \\ {\psi \left({x,y,t} \right) = F\left({x - Ut,y} \right)} \hfill \\ \end{array} $$\end{document} where U, ψ0 a are constants. This example makes it easier to identify the cause of phase speed error, either due to linear or non-linear processes, and furthermore, to find a satisfactory scheme for time integration. The numerical schemes compared include: Arakawa Jacobian,1 Arakawa-Matsuno scheme, Galerkin finite element, Lax-Wendroff, leap-frog, and Crank-Nicholson. The effect of a variational adjustment (see Sasaki16) is also studied. Computational time, RMS errors in stream function and vorticity, and the conservation of the mean kinetic energy and enstrophy are compared at the end of 120 (one period) and 240 (two periods) time steps. The study indicates that the numerical scheme that employs finite elements in space (same as Arakawa Jacobian) and Crank-Nicholson in time is the most accurate among the schemes studied.

Notes: A dual load method of truss analysis is presented that allows highly nonlinear member behaviour to be followed. In particular, a brittle type of strut behaviour is considered. The method assumes that the inelastic strut response is known and that piecewise linearization of the behaviour is acceptable. An example is given to illustrate the type of problem that can be handled. The example involves negative stiffness of the members and consequently attention must be given to the equation solving procedure for the structure. A comparison is made with some observed test results.

Notes: Studies of the convergence and performance of the mixed finite element method in plane elasticity are reported. A completeness criterion is proposed, and convergence rates for stresses and strain energy, as predicted elsewhere, are quoted. An eigenvalue analysis of the mixed element matrix is carried out for various combinations of interpolations for displacements and stresses in a triangular and a rectangular element, and the results are discussed in relation to the completeness criterion. Finally, a triangular element with linear interpolations for stresses and displacements is formulated and its use is demonstrated on several numerical examples.

Notes: A simple, efficient finite element method has been presented for the solution of a variety of scalar field problems in two dimensions. It is based on the mapping of the physical problem domain into an ‘image’ domain in the w-plane. The governing equation(s) and the boundary conditions in the physical plane are also appropriately transformed into the w-plane. The processes of standard finite element analysis are then implemented to obtain a solution in the w-plane.The method has been explained in detail, with illustrative examples where appropriate; it has several important advantages over the standard finite element method, particularly for the solution of infinite or semi-infinite domain problems. The method has been demonstrated to be simple, efficient, economical and potentially capable of dealing with a large repartoire of two-dimensional problems, including non-homogeneity, nonlinearity, etc.

Notes: This article presents the derivation of a very straightforward approximate procedure for the analysis of a continuous flexible member. Since very large deformations are anticipated, a shooting method is utilized along with Newton-type iteration for improved estimates. The resulting computer program is used to compare with exact solutions for a new examples.

Notes: The notion of thermodynamic consistency of a finite difference scheme is introduced in connection with steady compressible flow simulation. This concept requires that the finite difference scheme must lead to solutions which are consistent with the Second Law of Thermodynamics, whatever the grid sizes employed. Thus, in addition to the usual consistency with the conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy, the solutions of the finite difference equations must satisfy thermodynamic restrictions. The scheme proposed by Singhal and Spalding for the computation of plane, isentropic flow is generalized in a thermodynamically consistent way to handle inviscid, adiabatic but non-isentropic plane flow. Numerical solutions are obtained for a model problem using both the original and the extended methods. The results are compared with analytical predictions of shock-expansion theory. The effectiveness and the thermodynamic consistency of the new formulation is demonstrated.
