    Notes: A general constitutive model adequate for analysis of the thermomechanical response of composite materials is presented. The model is based on the mixture of the basic substances of the composite and allows the evaluation of the interdependence between the constitutive behaviour of different compounding materials. The behaviour of the each compound is modelled by a general anisotropic thermo-elasto-plastic model, termed the ‘base model’. The different base models for each compound are combined using mixing theory to simulate the behaviour of the multiphase material.

    Notes: A posteriori error estimation has become very popular, mainly in linear elasticity. A robust implementation of the superconvergent patch recovery technique of O. C. Zienkiewicz and J. Z. Zhu is presented for acoustic finite element analyses: the original concepts are extended to complex variables, and both local and global behaviours of the recovery procedure and the error estimation are studied. The numerical tests confirm the improvement of the rates of convergence for the recovered solution and also show the reliability of the error estimator except at frequencies corresponding either to the analytical or to the finite element eigenfrequencies.

    Notes: In the paper a U-shaped bellows is treated as a flexible shell of revolution which consists of circular ring shells and truncated shallow conical shells; then the non-linear problem of U-shaped bellows under the action of axial compression force and internal pressure is solved by means of the non-linear theory of shells and the integral equation method. Numerical solutions obtained are compared with previous theoretical and experimental results. The present theory is more appropriate to the analysis of bellows in the light of real profile shape, and shows that the influence of compressed angle on the characteristic relation and peak stresses is noticeable.

    Notes: A Laplacian smoothing of the mesh velocities with variable diffusivity based on the distance from moving bodies is introduced. This variable diffusivity enforces a more uniform mesh velocity in the region close to the moving bodies. Given that in most applications these are regions where small elements are located, the new procedure decreases element distortion considerably, reducing the need for local or global remeshing, and in some cases avoiding it altogether.

    Notes: A method for determining mass and stiffness modifications to achieve desired natural frequencies is presented. The given data are modal testing results, which consist of a truncated set of natural frequencies and mode shapes. The difficulty arising from the incompleteness of data is overcome by solving an optimization problem rather than seeking an exact solution. The obtained modifications are optimal in a Rayleigh-Ritz sense. The case where the mass and stiffness matrices are interrelated is also considered. Numerical examples demonstrating the various results and the sensitivity of the problem to perturbations are presented.

    Notes: Three different solution methods for the finite-volume discretized incompressible Navier-Stokes equations have been tested: segregated approaches, built around coupling methods such as SIMPLE, SIMPLER and PISO plus a line Gauss-Seidel linear solver; coupled methods, incorporating a penalty formulation to eliminate zero diagonal elements in the coefficient matrices, plus preconditioned GMRES as a linear solver;- and a FAS-full multigrid algorithm accelerating a classical segregated method based upon SIMPLE and the line Gauss-Seidel solver. Results demonstrate that the coupled method compares favourably to the segregated technique at small grid sizes but becomes too expensive for large problems. The FAS-full multigrid algorithm outperforms the other two methods when large numbers of nodes are employed in the simulation.

    Notes: This work describes the implementation of an adaptive procedure for viscoelastic flows. Finite element simulations are conducted using a Taylor-Galerkin/pressure correction scheme. The constitutive equations considered are those for an Oldroyd-B and a Phan-Thien/Tanner model. The adaptive meshing technique is h-refined by grid remeshing, based on a Delaunay procedure. Results are presented for two benchmark problems, namely flow past a sphere in a cylindrical tube and flow in an annular converging tube. It is concluded from the results that the use of an adaptive procedure with mesh regeneration enables an optimized mesh to be devised and a predicted accuracy to be attained.

    Notes: An efficient computational simulation scheme based on non-orthogonal control volume discretization and co-ordinate transformation techniques has been developed for solving the thermal transport phenomena, which involves tracking of the interface between solid and liquid phases (solidification front) and evaluation of the temperature profile during continuous casting operation. Conservation equations are reformulated in differential-integral form in terms of the transformed co-ordinates. All the terms arising from the non-orthogonality of the control volume have been retained in the numerical solution methodology, and a front tracking procedure has been formulated based on an iterative solution scheme. The formulation has been applied to solve the thermal transport phenomena in solidification processing of an A1-Mg alloy cylindrical ingot during continuous casting, which also includes axial conduction of heat. Theoretical evaluation of the solidification front and temperature distribution in the ingot are in good agreement with the experimentally measured data.

    Notes: The paper presents a penalty-equilibrating approach which is used to enforce the equilibrium constraints to individual hybrid elements so as to optimize the element performance. The approach has been applied successfully to improve the 4-noded hybrid stress membrane element (P-S) by Pian and Sumihara. It turns out that some defects of the P-S element, e.g. the shear locking phenomenon and the inability to pass the MacNeal's bending test, can be overcome and the element performance is significantly improved, without having to add any extra variables to the P-S element or to modify its stress fields.

    Notes: We describe extensions and improvements to the advancing front grid generation technique that have proven useful over the years. The following areas are treated in detail: situations with thin or crossing surfaces, meshing of surfaces defined by triangulations, and ease of user input to define the desired element size in space. The first extension is important if one considers the generation of volumetric grids around shells, membranes, fabrics, or CAD-data that exhibit cusps. Traditional advancing front generators are likely to fail in these situations. We propose the introduction of a crossing environment variable attached to faces and points in order to filter out undesired or incorrect information during the grid generation process. The second extension is required for situations where the surfaces to be gridded are not defined analytically, but via a triangulation. Typical cases where such triangulations are used to define the domain are geophysical problems, climate modelling and medical problems. The third topic deals with the reduction of manual labour to specify element size in space. Sources, element size attached directly to CAD-data, and adaptive background grids are discussed. Adaptive background grids, in combination with surface deviation tolerances, are used to obtain surface triangulations that represent the geometry faithfully, and at the same time enable a smooth transition to volumetric meshes.

    Notes: The paper deals with the symbolic integration of a 4-noded isoparametric finite element for plane elasticity. An efficient approach to generate explicit formulas for computing the elementary stiffness matrix is discussed. The procedure is based on the use of the Derive symbolic manipulation code as well as in a posteriori manipulation of the expressions obtained. The accuracy of the results is tested in extremely distorted and geometrically ill-conditioned elements. Three practical engineering models are presented and the accuracy of the results is discussed. A computer time comparison between both numerical and symbolic integration approaches is also included, showing that relevant CPU savings are obtained when applying symbolic integration.

    Notes: The paper deals with a numerical and an experimental analysis of the humidification process of air in a nearly horizontal tube. The numerical analysis is based on a finite-difference solution of the three-dimensional momentum, heat and mass transfer differential equations within the tube for the evaporation process of a water stream of circular meniscus cross-section counterflowing to an air stream. In order to provide reliable, high-accuracy data to assist in the development of the theoretical model, tests have been conducted using specially constructed apparatus to measure temperature and velocity profiles within the tube. The proposed computer algorithm was validated by evaluating its ability to predict the measurements of temperatures and velocities along the stream's flow. The theoretical predictions agree well with the experimental data. The model may be used to give performance characteristics for a wide range of humidification processes with different working fluids and state conditions.

    Notes: Two curved beam elements with two nodes and three nodes are designed based on strain fields. At the element level, curvature and membrane strain fields are approximated independently and shear strain fields are incorporated into the formulation by the equilibrium equations. The displacement fields are obtained by integrating the assumed strain fields. Two examples are given to verify the formulations and demonstrate the numerical performance of the two curved beam elements. Analysis results obtained reveal that the elements describe the curved beam behaviour correctly and show exceptional accuracy throughout a wide slenderness range.

    Notes: Free vibration of beams with intermediate point supports is studied by the classical Ritz method within the context of Euler beam theory. For the Ritz method, the displacement of a beam is approximated by a set of admissible trial functions which must satisfy the kinematic conditions at the ends and intermediate supports of the beam. To this end, a polynomial is superimposed on the conventional single-span beam vibration functions to form continuous-span or modified beam vibration functions. These modified beam functions are taken as the admissible trial functions for subsequent formulation. Stiffness and mass matrices are formulated using the conventional procedure and the resulting linear eigen-equation can be solved easily. A number of numerical examples are given to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the present method.

    Notes: The advance of powerful software for symbolic and numerical computations such as Mathematica sheds a new light on a paper by Golub and Welsch from 1969. Based on this paper the author describes a Mathematica procedure for determining the weights and abscissae of a Gauss quadrature rule with a user-defined weight function. After a brief description of the algorithm and its implementation examples demonstrate the usefulness of the procedure. The procedure is extremely useful if one has to compute many integrals with the same, possibly weakly singular, weight function. This might happen, for example, in the boundary element method.

By introducing two degrees of freedom to describe the elongation in the normal direction of the shell node linked with solid elements, a series of multipoint constraint equations which provide proper connections of solid and shell nodes are raised. It allows the principal directions of the conductivity tensor (anisotropy directions) to be derived from the geometrical shape of the finite element and to change within it.     Notes: The paper considers the problem of laminar incompressible viscous flow through a wavy channel. An artificial compressibility method using the approximate factorization technique is applied to solve the velocity-pressure formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations written in curvilinear non-orthogonal coordinates. The physical domain used was one wavelength of the channel in which appropriate periodicity conditions were applied in order to find a solution independent of entry effects. Flow separation was observed for high Re numbers and/or large wave amplitudes of the channel. The effect of inertia to the velocity profiles was observed, and pressure and shear stress were calculated along the length of the channel. These flows have great interest in industry and medicine such as for the extracorporeal membrane oxygenator.

    Notes: The paper concerns analytical integration of polynomial functions over linear polyhedra in three-dimensional space. To the authors' knowledge this is a first presentation of the analytical integration of monomials over a tetrahedral solid in 3D space. A linear polyhedron can be obtained by decomposing it into a set of solid tetrahedrons, but the division of a linear polyhedral solid in 3D space into tetrahedra sometimes presents difficulties of visualization and could easily lead to errors in nodal numbering, etc We have taken this into account and also the linearity property of integration to derive a symbolic integration formula for linear hexahedra in 3D space. We have also used yet another fact that a hexahedron could be built up in two, and only two, distinct ways from five tetrahedral shaped elements These symbolic integration formulas are then followed by an illustrative numerical example for a rectangular prism element, which clearly verifies the formulas derived for the tetrahedron and hexahedron elements.

    Notes: Together with the finite element method (FEM), the control volume method (CVM) is of particular interest for the numerical solution of partial differential equations. The accuracy of computation of the CVM almost matches that of FEM in contour-adapted co-ordinates or block-structured meshes of a single element type. The CVM is superior to the FEM in terms of physical interpretation and ease of handling. The paper presents an interpretation of the FEM that allows it to be treated like a CVM. This formal CVM, which is based on FEM techniques, combines the advantages of both methods. The method is applied to the discretization of the Navier-Stokes equation.

This approach eliminates the short comings of traditional one-pass and two-pass approaches both from the constraint requirement and solution convergence points of view. Implemented in an updated Lagrangian framework with the Perturbed Lagrangian formulation of Ju and Taylor for non-linear frictional contact, a patch test and typical examples have been worked out to prove the validity of the proposed approach. It is observed that a finer surface discretization of the slave and master surfaces is no longer needed to enforce contact constraint.

    Notes: The fundamental solution of the temperature field in an infinite three-dimensional body under the periodic unit thermal source is given in the present paper. According to the indirect boundary element method (IBEM) with fictitious heat sources, the problem of 3-D periodic heat conduction in a finite body is solved. By use of a quadratic inharmonic element, the problem of the corner region and the indetermination of the normal direction at boundary points can be solved in the numerical process. The validity of the present method is checked with two examples of which analytical solutions exist. It offers a useful method for the actual simulated calculation of the 3-D temperature field in engineering.

In simulations of the migration of a single solitary wave this algorithm is shown to have higher accuracy and better conservation than a recent difference scheme based on cubic spline interpolation functions. Extending the analytic continuation method we derive finite part values for a class of singular integrals which arise frequently in practice.     Notes: Direct methods for computing the pointwise stresses for nearly incompressible elastic materials fail to provide meaningful results when applied to the displacement formulation of the finite element method (FEM). A new extraction method for accurate computation of pointwise stresses for nearly incompressible elastic materials is presented. It is based on the complementary energy principle applied over a local domain in the postprocessing phase in conjunction with the p-version finite element solution. It is shown that accurate pointwise stresses are obtained, that the relative error in the pointwise stresses converges at a rate which is as fast as the relative error measured in the energy norm or faster, and importantly, the extracted stresses are virtually independent of Poisson's ratio. Numerical results for two problems, one having a smooth solution and the other containing a singular point, are provided.

    Notes: The modal superposition method is often used for computing the perturbation of eigenvectors in structural modification and model correction. However, it will bring about significant errors in the solution when the high-frequency modes are truncated. This paper presents a new method, which uses known modes construct a new basis of the N-dimensional Euclidean space (say, the mixed-basis), to calculate the first and second order perturbations of the known eigenvectors. In the present method only the known modes are used. The accuracy of this method not only has no relation to number of the truncated modes but is better than the truncated modal superposition method, in which only the known modes are employed. A numerical example of a truss structure with 36 degrees of freedom is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the method.

    Notes: A new method for computing the deformation of thin-walled beams with closed cross-section under warping torsional loading is presented. In comparison to the classical theory (Umanski), the hypothesis of no deformation of the contour of the cross-section of the beam is maintained and the assumption of no distortion of the cross-section plane is modified. The new approach gives better results than the classical theory when both are compared to a standard finite element technique (using shell elements). The central idea of the new approach lies in the usage of a new finite element called a macro-element, which is especially well suited for thin-walled beam computations.

    Notes: In this paper, an example problem is presented that illustrates the importance of strong objectivity in kinematic algorithms for large-deformation finite element applications. The example problem involves cyclic simple shearing of a hypoelastic material, wherein the increments of stretch and of rotation are of comparable magnitude. It is demonstrated that two kinematic algorithms that are in common use, and which are only weakly objective, give rise to an accumulative error in the normal stress components. The error is surprisingly large, even for very small strain increments. This behaviour arises due to a coupling between the stretch and rotation increments that is exhibited by weakly objective algorithms, and is perhaps especially serious in the context of models for jointed rock and other frictional materials, in which the shear response may depend strongly on the normal components of stress.

Three new formulations are presented by following an approach similar to that used in the previous method. Their numerical efficiency is compared with the previous method. The results indicate that these new formulations are substantially more efficient than the previous method. In particular, the new formulation in which the same sampling points for all n values are used is the most efficient. This new formulation remains highly efficient even when the field point is as close to the panel surface as 0·1 per cent of the panel diagonal.

    Notes: The identification of materials rheological behaviour in the non-linear range is based on experimental tests. When using direct identification methods, one faces the problem of the interpretation of the experimental tests, which requires the assumption of deformation homogeneity and therefore the use of approximation methods. Since this assumption is often not satisfied in the case of non-linear behaviour, material parameters are not assessed precisely. In the paper, an inverse identification method is proposed to avoid the problems raised by interpretation of the experimental tests and to determine material parameters more accurately. The algorithm developed consists of both an optimization method and a finite element method. This method is applied to the inverse identification of viscoplastic parameters of an aluminium alloy, with an investigation on the effect of the initial guess and errors in experimental data on the identified values.

    Notes: The paper deals with the discretization of any given multi-connected curved surface into triangular elements with straight sides. The method evolves from an initial rough triangular mesh generated from a set of input points which describe the geometry of the problem domain. Interior nodes are distributed according to user-established node-spacing functions of pre-specified spacing control parameters, and they are linked using the advancing front technique. Particular attention is paid to obtaining good distribution of interior nodes in the vicinity of the domain limits. Surface geometry representation is established using triangular Bézier patches with G1 continuity. This approach ensures a geometrically well-defined working platform for the subsequent discretization of the problem domain. The proposed method requires minimum input from the user and allows mesh gradation and remeshing to be carried out in a straightforward manner. Furthermore, problems associated with variations in the domain geometry as a result of local remeshing are eliminated with the aid of the geometrically pre-defined discretization platform. Results are presented for a range of both curved and planar surfaces, typical of those which might be encountered in hydrodynamics modelling involving flows with a free surface. The presented results demonstrate the flexibility and power of the technique.

    Notes: The goal of the paper is to bring to the attention of the computational community a long overlooked, very simple, acceleration method that impressively speeds up explicit time-stepping schemes, at essentially no extra cost. The authors explain the basis of the method, namely stabilization via wisely chosen inner steps (stages), justify it for linear problems, and spell out how simple it is to incorporate in any explicit code for parabolic problems. Finally, we demonstrate its performance on the (linear) heat equation as well as on the (non-linear) classical Stefan problem, by comparing it with standard implicit schemes (employing SOR or Newton iterations). The results show that super-time-stepping is more efficient than the implicit schemes in that it runs at least as fast, it is of comparable or better accuracy, and it is, of course, much easier to program (and to parallelize for distributed computing).

    Notes: The wave function of a system may be expanded in terms of eigenfunctions of the N -1 electron Hamiltonian times one-particle functions known as generalized overlap amplitudes (GOAS). The one-electron operator whose eigenfunctions are the GOAS is presented, without using an energy-dependent term as in the one-particle Green function or propagator approach. It is shown that this operator and the extended Koopmans' theorem (EKT) one-electron operator are of similar form, but perform complementary roles. The GOA operator begins with one-electron densities and total energies of N -1 electron states to generate the two-matrix and total energy of an N-electron state. The EKT operator begins with the two-matrix of an N-electron state to generate one-electron densities and ionization potentials (or approximations thereto) for N -1 electron states.     Notes: Interactions of DNA bases frequently involve the DNA base amino groups. In contrast to the empirical force fields, the ab initio calculations predict nonplanar DNA base amino groups. The same conclusion also follows from the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Both local and nonlocal density approximations were used. Optimized geometries of two other molecules with nonplanar amino groups (aniline, formamidine) are presented for comparison. The influence of nonplanar DNA base amino groups on the conformational variability of DNA is discussed. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The conformational behavior and the stability of thiazolium and thiamin diphosphate (ThDP) adducts formed by the C2 addition of the substrates pyruvate and glyoxylate to the corresponding thiamin systems are investigated within the force-field version PIMM90 as well as the semiempirical AM1 and PM3 methods. Moreover, the reaction coordinate of the decarboxylation process of the adducts with respect to the C2α(SINGLEBOND)COO- bond are calculated by PM3 and AM1. The calculations on the key intermediates of the Breslow mechanism are performed in order to study the steric aspects of both substrate adducts that show a different pathway in the catalytic cycle. The alternative structural findings for the decarboxylation products are compared with first 6-31C* studies on the corresponding thiazolium model systems. Especially, the PM3 calculations show that the elimination of CO2 is favored if the arrangement of the carboxylate group is nearly perpendicular to the plane of the thiazolium ring. These results support the least-motion maximum-overlap mechanism in the enzymatic decarboxylation reaction, proposed by Kluger. The most stable conformers of the ThDP adducts and its decarboxylation products are characterized by V-like structures and the formation of a significant intramolecular hydrogen bonding under participation of the 4′-aminopyrimidine ring. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Many biological processes are characterized by an essentially quantum dynamical event, such as electron or proton transfer, in a complex classical environment. To treat such processes properly by computer simulation, allowing nonadiabatic transitions involving excited states, we recently developed a density matrix evolution (DME) method [H. J. C. Berendsen and J. Mavri, J. Phys. Chem, 97, 13464 (1993)] which simulates the dynamics of quantum systems embedded in a classical environment. The formalism of the method is presented and an overview of the applications ranging from collisions of a quantum harmonic oscillator with noble gas atoms to proton tunneling in a double-well hydrogen bond is given. The methodology for treatment of proton-transfer processes with inclusion of excited states is presented. Future application of the method on biologically interesting processes, such as proton transfer in enzymatic reactions, is discussed. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: One is often led, in quantum mechanics, to a perturbative solution of an eigenvalue problem, which is defined by a given Hamiltonian. The perturbative series for the energy which results will be a function of a coupling constant which appears in the Hamiltonian. In this article, the perturbative series for the energy of a state of a cyclic polyene ring which are valid for the small and large coupling limit of the model are used to construct algebraic functions. These algebraic functions are defined in terms of polynomials which are given as a function of the energy variable and coupling parameter and can be solved to give the energy as a function of coupling. It is found that relatively small polynomials give very good agreement with the exact values and that the accuracy of the results increases rapidly as the degree of the polynomial increases. The final goal of this and subsequent articles is to study energy levels in PPP models of planar conjugated hydrocarbons. In this article, we test an interpolant technique on the case of the one-dimensional Hubbard model, where an exact solution can be obtained by solving a system of nonlinear equations. In the case of the Hubbard model, the correlation effects are overestimated. Therefore, if the technique works for the Hubbard model, it is reasonable to assume that the technique would work even better for the PPP model. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The Ising, small-bipolaron (ISB) theory is a strong-coupling theory of cuprate superconductivity which is based on the negative-U, Hubbard Hamiltonian. Its ground state is composed of (small) bipolarons and (small-bipolaron) holes with a vibronically induced, bipolaron-hole exchange interaction, JBH, between them. The energy gap, Δ(0), is taken to be equal to the dissociation energy of a small bipolaron and which, since it is defined spectroscopically, is not an order parameter. The application of the Ising mean-field theory to the highly degenerate ground-state yields a second-order phase change with kTC/2 = JBH and a real order parameter, Ω(T), which is valid over the entire temperature range from zero to TC. Near TC, the Ising free-energy functional takes the same form as does the Landau. In the presence of an electromagnetic field, the Ising functional is a generalization of the Ginzburg-Landau functional which employs a complex order parameter and which is invariant under the electromagnetic gauge transformation. The breaking of the gauge invariance yields the London theory of superconductivity. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The solvent shift of the π* ← n transition of acetone in water, acetonitrile, and tetrachloromethane was calculated in a combined quantum mechanical - classical mechanical approach, using both dielectric continuum and explicit, polarizable molecular solvent models. The explicit modeling of solvent polarizability allows for a separate analysis of electrostatic, induction, and dispersion contributions to the shifts. The calculations confirm the qualitative theories about the mechanisms behind the blue shift in polar solvents and the red shift in nonpolar solvents, the solvation of the ground state due to electrostatic interactions being preferential in the former, and favorable dispersion interaction with the excited state, in the latter case. Good quantitative agreement for the solvent shift between experiment (+1,700, +400, and -350 cm-1 in water, acetonitrile, and tetrachloromethane, respectively) and the explicit solvent model (+1,821, +922, and -381 cm-1) was reached through a modest Monte Carlo sampling of the solvent degrees of freedom. A consistent treatment of the solvent could only be realized in the molecular solvent model. The dielectric-only model needs reparameterization for each solvent. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: In density functional theory (DFT), a many-electron problem for the electron density in atoms may be reduced, according to the Kohn-Sham scheme, to a one-electron problem. In the present work, a variational model is proposed which leads, within some assumptions, to the set of equations describing the change of the electron density ρ and energy ε during the ionization process. It is shown that the one-electron density contributions are not necessarily spherically symmetric, but assume the symmetry which depends upon the symmetry of the positive field. A few nonspherically symmetric potentials are studied in the present article. The nonlinear differential equation for density r is formulated and solved for Coulombic, Fues-Kratzer, and Hartmann potentials. The solutions and some particular examples are presented. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The mathematical concept of uniform boundedness is used to give a characterization of the capability of {ρn} to reproduce the asymptotic behavior of the true electron density ρ and it is shown by means of numerical examples how a sequence {ρn} that does not reproduce the correct asymptotic behavior is not uniformly bounded and can give divergent expectation values of one-electron operators s(r) not relatively form-bounded by the Hamiltonian. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: We report on an isolated cluster approach to determine local electronic structures of TiO2 surfaces before and after formation of intrinsic defects, i.e., oxygen vacancies, at different crystallographic sites. In particular, isolated oxygen vacancies at bridging sites, isolated oxygen vacancies at in-plane sites and aggregated oxygen vacancies at bridging sites have been treated which lead to changes in the coordination of the adjacent Ti atoms. We find that electronic band gap states are only formed in the presence of fourfold coordinated Ti surface atoms. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The quantum dynamics of prototypical three-level metastable system under external perturbations, both time-independent and time-dependent, are studied numerically as well as analytically. The regular Rabi oscillations generated in the system under a monochromatic perturbation are shown to develop additional features when the system has a metastable state. The autocorrelation function of ψ(t) reveals nondecaying, almost quasiperiodic, behavior in such systems. The Rabi oscillations turn more complex when a bichromatic perturbation with two incommensurate frequencies is allowed to interact with the three-level system, irrespective of the presence or absence of a metastable state. A rapid decay in the autocorrelation function of the wavefunction [ψ(t)] is observed in such cases. © 1996 Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The present knowledge of the monotonicity properties of the spherically averaged electron density ρ(r) and its derivatives, which comes mostly from Roothan-Hartree-Fock calculations, is reviewed and extended to all Hartree-Fock ground-state atoms from hydrogen (Z = 1) to uranium (Z = 92). In looking for electron functions with universal (i.e., valid in the whole periodic table) monotonicity properties, it is found that there exist positive values of α so that the function go(r; α) = ρ(r)/rα is convex, and g1(r;α) = -ρ′(r)/rα is not only monotonically decreasing from the origin but also convex. This is, however, not the case for the function g2(r; α) = ρ′(r)/rα. Additionally, the conditions which specify values for β such that the function gn(r; β) = (-1) ′ρ(n)(r)/rβ is logarithmically convex are obtained and numerically calculated for n = 0,1 in all neutral atoms below uranium. The last property is used to obtain inequalities of general validity involving three radial expectation values which generalize all the similar ones known to date, as well as other relationships among these quantities and the values of the electron density and its derivatives at the nucleus. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
