Abstract The basic equations for the heat transfer by free convection of water in a shallow cavity with differentially heated end-walls can be solved by the aid of the method of matched asymptotic expansion. By setting up an ingenious defined reference velocity one obtains an asymptotic solution, even if the curvature of the density-temperature-function must be taken into account because of the density maximum of water at 3.98 °C. This solution is called extended Boussinesq-solution because only the density in the volume force term of the momentum equation is taken into account by a quadratic temperature function whereas in all other terms it is considered as constant.
