Notes: Two types of spiral growth, single and double spirals, of C60 epitaxial films on a KBr(001) substrate were observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). These single and double spirals were found on films grown at different rates. All spiral islands show the threefold symmetry of the face-centered-cubic (fcc) structure. In the case of single spirals, many fringes were observed in three equivalent [11¯0] directions on the fcc (111) surface. From the AFM images, we concluded that the growth process of these spirals can be explained by the classical crystal growth theory of Burton, Cabrera, and Frank and that screw dislocations form without any direct influence of the substrate. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Human epidermal cells were cultured with pemphigus antibody in the presence of hydrocortisone, methlprednisolone sodium succinate, dapsone and gold. Hydrocortisone and methylprednisolone reduced the production of the enzyme plasminogen activator but dapsone and gold had no effect. These results support the hypothesis that corticosteroids have dual effects on pemphigus through inhibition of plasminogen activator production by epidermal cells and suppression of pemphigus antibody production by B lymphocytes.

Notes: Two patients presented with the unusual condition of multiple warty dyskeratomas on the scalp. Biopsies of affected skin stained positive with human keratin monoclonal antibodies HKN-6 and -7, specific for cortex and inner root sheath of normal human hair, respectively. Multiple warty dyskeratomas are a rare occurrence and their actiopathogenesis remains elusive. Positive immunohistochemical staining of a lesion with antikeratin antibodies HKN-6 and -7, specific for human hair keratin, suggests a follicular origin for warty dyskeratoma.

Notes: We describe a 23-year-old Japanese man with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who developed massive cutaneous mucinosis. He was diagnosed with SLE when he was 11 years old. Prednisolone therapy (30 mg/day) was initiated and reduced to 10 mg/day 3 months later: the SLE had been well-controlled with this dose of prednisolone for 12 years. However, infiltrated erythematous plaques developed on the middle-lateral area of his back at 17 years old and progressed to erythematous and elastic soft tumorous masses over 20 cm in diameter at 23 years old. Biopsies of the lesions on the nape revealed massive mucin deposition. Topical injection with hyaluronidase decreased the lesion. This cutaneous mucinosis can be distinguished clinically and histopathologically from papular and nodular mucinosis associated with SLE. The present case might be an unusual clinical variant of cutaneous mucinosis associated with SLE.

Notes: We report a patient with herpetiform pemphigus(HP)who showed reactivity only with pemphigus vulgaris(PV)antigen but not with pemphigus foliaceus(PF)antigen. Direct and indirect immuno- fluorescence revealed keratinocyte cell surface staining in the lower layers of the epidermis, where desmoglein 3 (Dsg3) is expressed. Immunoblot analysis, using ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid- separated human epidermal extracts, revealed that the patient's serum recognized only a 130-kDa polypeptide which co-migrated with Dsg3. By antigen-specific immunoadsorption studies, using desmoglein 1 (Dsg1) and Dsg3 recombinant protein produced by baculovirus expression system, immunoreactivity of the patient's serum was completely adsorbed by Dsg3 alone, but not by Dsg1. These results indicate that this HP patient produced only anti-Dsg3 autoantibodies and no other autoantibodies against components of the keratinocyte cell surface. HP could be a variant of PV.in addition to PF, with unique clinical and histological features.

Notes: Characlcristic moniliform hairs of monilcthrix were ultrastructurally examined. By scanning electron microscope, nodes and internodes were seen alternating on the affected hair; the nodes were normal in apparance and thickness, while the internodes were thin and showed ridges and flutes. By transmission electron microscope, the cross sections of the internodes revealed wrinkling of the hair coticular cells and a reduced number of the cortical cells. Cross sections of the cortical cells per se showed a similar size and a normal keratin pattern in both nodes and internodes, compared with those of control hairs from normal individuals. From these findings, the internodes seemed to be the pathological portions of the monilifonn hair, and such abnormal thinning of hair shaft might tie caused by a periodical dysfunction of the hair matrix, especially in the hair cortex.

Notes: Five patients with mclanoacanthonia are reported. The skin lesions consisted of a single, round plaque measuring several centimeters in diameter. Histologic findings were characterized by formation within an acanthotic epidermis, of many islands of small basaloid cells and highly dendritic melanocytes. Electron microscopic examination of one lesion revealed a disturbance of melanin transfer from the highly dendritic melanocytes to the neighboring keratinoeytes.

Notes: Summary Responses of ring segments of the isolated canine coronary artery superfused with arterial blood from a donor dog were compared with responses of segments superfused with Krebs-Henseleit (K-H) solution. KCl (1–30 mg) caused contraction in a dose-dependent manner both in K-H solution- and in blood-superfused preparation. However, CaCl2 (1–100 mg) and nifedipine (0.1–30 μg) contracted and relaxed, respectively, only blood-superfused preparation but not K-H solution-superfused one. These results show that even in the same region of the coronary artery, different superfusates result in different responses to contracting or relaxing agents. This difference may be explained by the idea that Ca2+-channels are activated and endow basal tension in blood-superfused preparations, but not in K-H solution-superfused ones.
