Notes: Summary Following thyroidectomy, monoamine oxidase (MAO) activities toward tyramine decreased significantly by 20% in the nucleus periventricularis and the nucleus arcuatus among the 3 hypothalamic nuclei of the rat, while MAO activity toward serotonin decreased significantly by 10% only in the nucleus periventricularis. It is suggested that thyroidectomy induced selective changes on the multiple forms of MAO in the discrete circumventricular nuclei.

Notes: Summary Seneciphylline, one of the hepatotoxic pyrolizidine alkaloids, induced, as do also monoclotaline, etc., a marked arterial and arteriolar hypertrophy of the lung of young Wistar rats a month after a single s. c. injection of 50–80 mg/kg. Cor pulmonale with leftward shift of the ventricular septum was also noted.

Notes: Summary Light and electron microscopic studies were made on the anterior horn cells in a case of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Eosinophilic inclusions of Bunina type were observed almost selectively in the motor neurons of spinal cord, as well as of brain stem, at the light microscopic level. Fine structural study revealed the presence of two types of cytoplasmic inclusions. The first, mainly corresponding to the light microscopic inclusions, were homogeneous, electron-dense, round- or oval-shaped bodies with vesicular or tubular rims and ribosome particles, about 2–5 μ in diameter, which contained filaments or other cytoplasmic components in the clear areas within them. The second were lamellar structures (laminated cytoplasmic bodies, Morales) which appeared to be originating from endoplasmic reticulum. There was no distinct transition in these two types of inclusions and the relationship to each other is not clear. The significance of Bunina body is unknown, but some manifestation of a primary disorder, e.g., protein metabolism, rather than a secondary degenerative change in the motor neurons in amyotorophic lateral sclerosis.

Notes: Ammonia formation activity was studied on the Ru/(MgO-CeO2) catalyst loaded on aAg-Pd hydrogen permeable membrane. The ammonia formation rate for the membrane reactor wasmore increased than that based on the conventional flow-type one due to the high reactivity ofatomic hydrogen supplied from the Ag-Pd membrane. In addition, other on-site hydrogengeneration type membrane reactor was also constructed, where the Ag-Pd alloy membrane was notonly atomic hydrogen supplier but also an electrode for water electrolysis. Ammonia waseffectively formed even at 373 K on this membrane reactor with the electrodeposited Ru metalpowder catalyst

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wurden normale Skeletmuskelspindeln von Menschen histochemisch untersucht. 1.
Notes: Summary Normal muscle spindles of human skeletal muscle were studied histochemically. 1) Four histochemical types of intrafusal muscle fibers were classified by ATPase stain: Bag I fiber, Bag II fiber, Chain I fiber and Chain II fiber. Moreover, two types of nuclear bag fibers were classified by NADH Tetrazolium Reductase stain and PAS stain: Bag I fiber and Bag II fiber. 2) Three kinds of fusimotor endings were verified by the cholinesterase technic: en plaque, en grappe and diffuse endings. 3) Two kinds of fusisensory endings were verified by NADH TR stain and also electron-microscopically: primary and secondary sensory endings.

Notes: Summary Pathological changes of the fusimotor endings in parkinsonism, motor neuron disease and myasthenia were examined by the acetylcholinesterase technic on serial sections. In parkinsonism, the diffuse endings, which are thought to be supplied by the static gamma nerve fibers, showed remarkable enlargement, while en plaque and en grappe endings were atrophic. In motor neuron disease, en plaque and en grappe endings, which are thought to be innervated by the beta nerve fibers and dynamic gamma nerve fibers respectively, revealed marked atrophy. However the diffuse endings were normal. In myasthenia gravis and myasthenic syndrome (Eaton-Lambert syndrome), en plaque and en grappe endings were atrophic, though only the diffuse endings were spared. The significance of these changes in the fusimotor endings is discussed.

Notes: Summary Dry seeds of rice, Oryza sativa L., containing about 13 percent moisture, were exposed to 60Co gamma raysat extremely low temperature (−196°C). M1 damage on survival rate, seedling height and seed set were found to become much smaller in the cooling treatment than in the not-cooled control. Chlorophyll and heading date mutation frequencies in the M2 generation were not affected by the decreased M1 damage caused by the cooling treatment, and the mutation frequencies could be significantly increased by applying higher doses combined with the cooling treatment. Frequency of sterile or semi-sterile mutants in the M2 generation was found to be significantly lower in the cooling treatment than in the not-cooled control. It is assumed from the experimental results that extremely low temperatures during irradiation could reduce the amount of physiological damage and gross chromosome aberrations. This results in an increased efficiency of producing minute deletions and/or point mutations.
