Notes: We have utilized the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope to perturb a specific local structure (the C defect) of Si(100) at 80 K, and observed the dynamical symmetric(if and only if)buckled transition of the surrounding dimers. The observed large-scale transition implies that the configuration of the dimers is determined by a detailed balance among many elastic long-range forces generated by the surrounding C defects. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Transient spectra following the v=1←0 excitation of the OH stretching mode of Brønsted acidic hydroxyl groups in normal and deuterated mordenite zeolites have been measured by a two-color picosecond pump–probe technique. When the OH and OD stretching bands were excited by resonant IR pulses, transient bleaching of the fundamental band (v=1←0) and the transient hot band (v=2←1) absorption signal were observed. For the OH and OD groups free of adsorbates, the spectral widths of the pump-induced signals were broadened by ∼4 cm−1 due to pure dephasing from the convoluted width of the pump and probe IR pulses. When the OH and OD groups were adsorbed by a Xe atom, the frequencies of the ν(OH) and ν(OD) bands shifted to lower frequency and at the same time the widths of both the transient bleaching and the transient hot band absorption were much broader than those of the isolated hydroxyl groups by the factor of more than three. Actually, the widths of the transient signals were about the same as those of the linear absorption signals. An adiabatic approximation has been employed to interpret the observed broadening/shift of the IR bands by making use of the results of DFT (density functional theory) calculations performed on a model cluster consisting of a Xe atom and an H3Si–(OH)–AlH3 substrate. The result agreed well with the observed spectral features. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: By means of tunable infrared pump–probe experiment, vibrational relaxation rates (v=1→0) of OH stretching mode of Brønsted acidic hydroxyl groups in a mordenite zeolite, which were interacting with noble gases (He, Ar, Kr, or Xe), were measured. The population lifetime, T1, decreased with the increase of the interaction with noble gases, e.g., 170 ps and 58 ps for isolated hydroxyl groups and ones interacting with Xe, respectively. Using a simple linear chain model, the mechanism for the enhancement of the relaxation rate was studied. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The outer- and inner-valence ionization spectra of the Group VI hydrides H2O, H2S and H2Se below the double-ionization threshold were studied by the SAC-CI (symmetry-adapted-cluster configuration-interaction) general-R method. The SAC-CI method quite accurately reproduced the experimental spectra of these hydrides and gave detailed characterizations of the shake-up states. Several unknown satellite peaks were predicted. The shake-up state which includes excitations to the Rydberg orbitals was found to be very important for describing the satellite peaks of these hydrides. A detailed inner-valence satellite spectrum of H2Se is theoretically proposed prior to any experimental observation. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The paper describes the Japanese understanding and practice with regard to wheel rail interface problems and their management. Rolling contact fatigue, especially squat defects, grinding, corrugations and lubrication, have been considered. The understanding has been developed through a combination of theoretical modeling, laboratory-based experiments and field trials. Measures have been introduced to mitigate the detrimental effects of these problems and are resulting in benefits to the Japanese railway companies. However, more work is required to better understand wheel rail interface problems and to provide effective solutions.

Notes: Abstract. Using the G-monopole invariant, we shall show that any anti-holomorphic involution on a closed symplectic 4-manifold is not diffeomorphic to any holomorphic involution. As a corollary, we shall give a way to construct exotic smooth structures.

Notes: Abstract There is little information available regarding the morphological and biomolecular characteristics of mandibular condylar cartilage. The purpose of this study was to determine the age-related changes in the morphology and immunolocalization of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in mandibular condyles. The mandibular condylar cartilages from 4-, 8-, 16-, 32-, and 64-week-old Wistar male rats were examined to verify the localization of chondroitin-4-sulfate (Ch-4S), chondroitin-6-sulfate (Ch-6S) and keratan sulfate (KS) using an indirect immunofluorescent technique with three monoclonal antibodies for glycosaminoglycans, 2-B-6, 3-B-3 and 5-D-4, respectively. Morphologically, the condylar cartilage was a growth cartilage during growing periods, began to differentiate into articular cartilage from the central area of 16-week-old condyles, and became mature articular cartilage at 32 weeks of age. A regional difference was found in the morphological features and distribution of GAGs between the anterior, central, postero-superior and posterior areas of the condyles at each age. The immunohistochemical localizations of these three glycosaminoglycans showed age-related, morphology-dependent changes, from growth cartilage to articular cartilage-like cartilage. Immunoreactions for all of the antibodies decreased progressively with age in the interterritorial matrix, while the pericellular and territorial matrix in the condylar cartilage of the mandible maintained relatively higher immunoreactivity. In conclusion, age-related and regional differences in the localization of glycosaminoglycans Ch-4S, Ch-6S, and KS were found in the mandibular condyles in rats, and these changes are believed to be related to functional and developmental requirements.

Notes: Abstract Aims/hypothesis. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) participate in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. We reported earlier that OPB-9195, a synthetic thiazolidine derivative and novel inhibitor of advanced glycation, prevented progression of diabetic glomerulosclerosis by lowering serum concentrations of advanced glycation end products and reducing their deposition in the glomeruli. Here, we examined their contribution and that of growth factors, such as transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), to the progression of diabetic nephropathy. We also investigated the expression of type IV collagen in the kidneys of Otsuka-Long-Evans-Tokushima-Fatty (OLETF) rats, a Type II (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus model, after treatment with OPB-9195. Methods. Using northern blots and immunohistochemical techniques, we determined the renal expression of TGF-β and type IV collagen mRNAs and proteins in OLETF rats. We also examined OPB-9195's effects on renal expression of VEGF mRNA and protein. Results. Concomitant increases in TGF-β and type IV collagen expression were observed at each point in time in OLETF rats not given OPB-9195. In contrast, OPB-9195 treatment greatly suppressed the renal expression of TGF-β, VEGF and type IV collagen mRNAs and proteins to that seen in non-diabetic rats. Conclusion/interpretation. Since OPB-9195, an AGE-inhibitor, prevented the progression of diabetic nephropathy by blocking type IV collagen production and suppressing overproduction of two growth factors, TGF-β and VEGF, in diabetic rats, this compound warrants further investigation. Notes: Abstract Objective: The interaction between carbamazepine and bromperidol was studied in 13 schizophrenic inpatients. Methods: Before carbamazepine addition, the subjects were taking bromperidol 12–24 mg · day−1 for 1–20 weeks. Carbamazepine 400 mg · day−1 was coadministered for 4 weeks, and blood samplings were performed before carbamazepine addition and at weekly intervals after the addition. Plasma concentrations of bromperidol and its reduced metabolite were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. Results: Carbamazepine significantly decreased plasma concentrations of both bromperidol and reduced bromperidol for all weeks. On average, the plasma concentrations of bromperidol and reduced bromperidol at 4 weeks were 37% and 23% of the corresponding precarbamazepine values. Despite these decreases in plasma concentration, the Clinical Global Impression scores decreased slightly but significantly after carbamazepine addition. Conclusion: The present study suggests that carbamazepine decreases plasma concentrations of bromperidol and its reduced metabolite by inducing the metabolism of these compounds. Nevertheless, adjunctive carbamazepine may be useful for schizophrenic patients treated with bromperidol.

Notes: Summary.  New antigenic variants of B/Yamagata/16/88-like lineage which appeared in the season of 1997 as a minor strain tended to predominate in the following season. Also, we could observe for the first time, three peaks of activity caused by H3N2 virus and two variants of B influenza virus. Antigenic and phylogenetic analyses revealed that B/Victoria/2/87-like variants appeared again in Japan in 1997 after a nine-year absence. Influenza B viruses evolved into three major lineages, including the earliest strain (I), B/Yamagata/16/88-like variants (II), which comprised of three sublineages (II-(i), II-(ii), II-(iii)), and B/Victoria/2/87-like variants (III). Evolution of influenza B virus hemagglutinin was apparently distinguishable from that of influenza A virus, showing a systematic mechanism of nucleotide deletion and insertion. This phenomenon was observed to be closely related to evolutionary pathways of I, II-(i), II-(ii), II-(iii) and III lineages. It was noteworthy to reveal that the nucleotide deletion and insertion mechanism of influenza B virus completed one cycle over a fifty-year period, and that a three nucleotide deletion was again observed in 1997 strains belonging to lineage II-( iii). It was evident that amino acid substitutions accompanying nucleotide insertions were highly conserved.
