Notes: Ordered and disordered states of potassium ions in (111) tunnels in the structure of cubic KSbO3 have been studied by high-resolution electron microscopy. N-beam calculations for the images of both the ordered and disordered states reproduce well the observed images. The disordered state changes into the ordered state under electron irradiation during the observations. Electron diffraction from the specimens and optical diffraction from the images show diffuse spots due to small domains of the long-range-ordered state, but no other diffuse scattering due to short-range order has been observed.

Notes: The crystal structures of phases, previously designated as 11L, 9L and 16L, which were commonly found in the title systems are suggested from their high-resolution two-dimensional electron-microscope images. Two types of blocks are found which are composed of five and six layers of pentavalent-metal oxide octahedra and are closely related to the pyrochlore structure. The 11L structure is of rhombohedral {\tt ABCABC} stacking of the former type of block, and the 9L structure is of hexagonal {\tt B}_{0}{\tt A}_{0}^{\prime}{\tt B}_{0}{\tt A}_{0}^{\prime} stacking of the latter type of block. The 16L structure is found to be an alternate stacking of the two types of blocks. The method of stacking of the blocks is the same for the three structures and is found to be favorable from the point of view of local charge balance.

Notes: In part I, the preceding paper, structural models were proposed on the basis of high-resolution electron microscopy for phases previously designated as 11L, 9L and 16L, which were found to exist in the title systems. Two types of blocks were found, which are composed of five and six layers of octahedra. In the present paper, various intergrowth phases which are composed of the two types of blocks are described. A new notation is proposed to denote these intergrowth phases as well as the 11L, 9L and 16L structures. Two-dimensional ordering of pentavalent ions in the six-layer block is found, giving rise to diffuse scattering in electron diffraction patterns. Two-dimensional images, calculated on the basis of the proposed model, are found to reproduce the observed images.

Notes: Summary Addition of serum albumin diminished the uncoupling effect of chinoform on oxidative phosphorylation in rat liver mitochondria. Upon increasing the concentration of magnesium ions in the medium, the action of serum albumin was diminished. These results indicate that serum albumin combines with chinoform in competition with magnesium ions.

Notes: Summary The distribution of type A and B monoamine oxidase (MAO) activities in the central nervous system (CNS) of rat and chick was investigated using 5-hydroxytryptamine and β-phenylethylamine as specific substrates. The distribution of type A MAO was similar to that of type B MAO in rat CNS, but quite different in chick CNS. This may be ascribed to the difference in animal species. The major part of MAO activity in the spinal cord was found to be type A.

Notes: Summary Upon injection of β-phenylethylamine (PEA) into the subconjunctival space of rabbit, intraocular pressure increased. This effect went parallel with the amount of PEA transferred into the anterior chamber, which indicates that intraocular pressure was elevated by direct action of PEA.

Notes: Summary The possible mechanism of neuropathic effect of chinoform was investigated using cultured retinal neuroblasts from chick embryos. Retinal neuroblasts completely degenerated by chinoform-ferric chelate within a day. This change, however, was not observed with free chinoform or ferric ion.a-Tocopherol had a potent protective effect on the toxicity of the chelate. From these results, it was concluded that the lipid peroxidation due to ferric ion chelated with chinoform incorporated into the membrane of nerve tissues is the most important step in induction of the neuropathy.

Notes: Abstract Use of the enkephalinase inhibitor phosphoramidon in the in vitro radiochemical assay for juvenile hormone biosynthesis enhanced allatostatin-mediated inhibition of hormone production by corpora allata of the cockroach,Diploptera punctata. Significant increases in inhibition in day 2 virgin female CA by AST 1 (at 10−7 M) and AST 4 (10−8–10−7 M) were observed in the presence of phosphoramidon (10−5M or greater). No significant increases in inhibition were seen in CA from day 6 mated females with AST 4 (10−9–10−7M) and phosphoramidon combined. Phosphoramidon alone had no effect on JH biosynthesis. Analysis of allatostatin content of the CA, as determined by ELISA, revealed that addition of phosphoramidon to the medium increased the endogenous allatostatin conten in CA of virgin and mated females. The similarity in primary structure between allatostatins and enkephalin-like peptides and their similar distribution makes it probable that phosphoramidon acts by preventing breakdown of allatostatins within the CA.

Notes: Abstract Transmission electron microscopy, optical reflection and channeling effect measurements are employed to investigate disorders in 30 keV, high dose (3×1016ions/cm2) and high current (≦5 mA) phosphorus as-implanted silicon with (111), (100), and (110) orientation as a function of temperature rise (100–850°C) by the beam heating effect during implantation. Temperature rise below 400°C results in continuous amorrphous layer formation. This contrasts with results of the recovery into single crystals for temperature rise samples above 500°C, regardless of wafer orientation. Secondary defects (black-dotted defects, dislocation loops and rodlike defects) are formed in singlecrystal recovery samples, having a deeper distribution in (110) wafers and a shallower distribution in (111) and (100) wafers. Rodlike defects observed in 850°C samples are of “vacancy” type and have the largest density in (110) wafers.

Notes: Summary The effects of an opioid receptor antagonist, naloxone (NAL), were studied on the changes in pituitary hormone secretion induced by emotional stress. Male Wistar rats were trained with tone stimuli paired with electric footshocks and tested with the tone and environmental cue signals for emotional stress of fear acquired by learning as described previously (Onaka et al. 1988). Rats received s.c. injected NAL 30 min before testing at doses of 0, 0.2, 1.0, 5.0 and 25.0 mg/kg b.w. Half the rats were injected with 0.5 M NaCl (20 ml/kg b.w.) together with NAL. In these hypertonic rats plasma vasopressin level was slightly increased after NAL. The increment was statistically significant in control groups but not in experimental groups. However the suppression of vasopressin secretion by emotional stimuli was not changed by NAL. Plasma oxytocin levels were extremely high and not significantly different among experimental, unshocked control and untested control groups. NAL further increased the oxytocin level dose-dependently. NAL did not significantly change plasma adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) levels and hence did not modify the augmentative response in ACTH secretion to emotional stimuli. Plasma prolactin level was significantly elevated after emotional stimuli and NAL depressed the prolactin level in each of experimental and control groups. After NAL, the magnitude of the facilitatory response in prolactin secretion to emotional stimuli was decreased. Motor activity and its suppressive response to emotional stimuli were not influenced by NAL. In another half of rats under a normal osmotic condition the vasopressin response to emotional stimuli was not affected by NAL. NAL further augmented potentiation of oxytocin secretion after emotional stimuli dose-dependently. Effects of NAL on ACTH level, prolactin level and motor activity were similar to those in rats under hypertonic conditions. These results demonstrate that endogenous opioids are selectively and differentially involved in hypothalamo-hypophysial responses to fear-related emotional stress.
