    Notes: We compare the superlattice modulation, microstructure, and epitaxy of Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 thin films grown on MgO [100] and SrTiO3 [100] substrates by dc diode sputtering. Films grown on MgO were found to be quite clean with the c axis perpendicular to the substrate. However, no in-plane orientational relationship to the substrate was found. Films grown on SrTiO3, on the other hand, showed very good epitaxy to the substrate despite the presence of second phases. Films grown on MgO also exhibited a longer coherence length of the superlattice modulation than those grown on SrTiO3 under identical conditions.

    Notes: We have found that in situ superconducting Y-Ba-Cu-O thin films can be produced by sputtering without the aid of any external O2 source during deposition. The films were produced by rf magnetron sputtering from a composite target onto MgO(100) substrates heated at 650 °C. Films made in a pure Ar pressure of 24 mTorr and fast cooled in N2 ambient contain the tetragonal YBa2Cu3Ox phase with x estimated to be 6.1. Films made under the same sputtering conditions but cooled in 30 mTorr oxygen after deposition, show a superconducting transition Tc(R=0) at 71 K with an onset at 85 K. The Tc(R=0) rises to 80 K if 0.5 mTorr oxygen was added during sputtering. The experimental results provide conclusive evidence that sufficient oxygen can be incorporated into the films to form the tetragonal YBa2Cu3Ox phase simply by physical sputtering from an oxide target. The films absorb additional oxygen and transform into the orthogonal, superconducting phase when subsequently cooled in partial O2.

    Notes: We have studied the effect of visible and near-infrared light on the electrical properties of superconducting thin films of YBa2Cu3O7−δ. The responses we observe can all be explained in terms of light heating the film to a temperature above the superconducting transition. No evidence that the light directly affects superconductivity was found.

    Notes: We have used a pulsed electron beam in a scanning electron microscope to produce highly localized (∼1 μm) changes in the electrical properties of a heterogeneous thin film of YBa2Cu3O7−δ . The predominant effect of the beam is to locally heat the film, producing a measurable shift in the current-voltage characteristic. In particular, we have precisely located the part of the film responsible for a sharp feature in the current-voltage characteristic corresponding to a single Josephson junction. The technique should also be useful more generally in identifying specific weak links in superconducting thin films.

    Notes: Highly oriented, epitaxial Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x thin films were prepared on MgO(100) by molecular beam epitaxy at a substrate temperature of 550–600 °C. The in situ growth was achieved by incorporating reactive oxygen species produced by a remote microwave plasma in a flow-tube reactor. The epitaxial (001) orientation is demonstrated by x-ray diffraction and ion channeling. In situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction showed that a layer-by-layer growth has produced a well-ordered, atomically smooth surface in the as-grown tetragonal phase of an oxygen stoichiometry of 6.2–6.3. A 500 °C anneal in 1 atm of O2 converted the oxygen content to 6.7 to 6.8. Typical superconducting transport properties of an Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x film 1000 A(ring) thick are ρ(300 K)=325 μΩ cm, ρ(300 K)/ρ(100 K)=2.4, Tc(onset)=92 K, and Tc(R=0)=82 K. The transport Jc at 75 K is 1×105 A/cm2, and increases to 1×106 A/cm2 at 70 K.

    Notes: High Tc superconducting Y-Ba-Cu-O films have been produced by rf magnetron sputtering using single unreacted composite targets of Y2O3, BaF2, and CuO powders. Transport measurements of the films showed a sharp resistive Tc (R=0) at 89 K and a metallic behavior of resistivity versus temperature. The films show preferred orientations when deposited on single-crystal SrTiO3 substrates (100) or (110) and followed by a post O2 annealing at 825 °C.

    Notes: We have used x-ray photoemission spectroscopy to study the core level spectra of 200 A(ring) Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu oxide thin films, in the hope that the importance of the surface sensitivity of photoemission is minimized for these samples, whose thickness is only 6–7 unit cells. The samples were annealed in oxygen at temperatures ranging from 600 to 870 °C, over which temperature range the thin films are converted from an amorphous insulating phase to an ordered superconducting phase with Tc (R=0)=80 K. Regardless of the annealing temperature, the Cu 2p spectra of all films show satellite structure indicative of Cu2+ states. Even the spectrum of an as-deposited film has a satellite similar to those observed for the annealed films, including the superconducting film. The similarity of the satellite structure in the core level spectra for all films suggests that the Cu-O interactions, such as the Cu d-O p orbital charge transfer energies and the hopping integrals, remain similar when the oxides undergo the insulator-superconductor transition through high-temperature anneal. That is, the same local Cu-O interaction exists before and after the superconducting phase sets in. This implies that the Cu valence alone does not determine the properties of high Tc superconductors.

    Notes: A new technique for producing thin films of the high-temperature perovskite superconductors, LnBa2Cu3O7−x, where Ln represents a rare-earth element, using spin-on metalorganic precursors is described. Pyrolysis of the spin-coated films, consisting of mixed metal (2-ethyl hexanoates), leads to black films up to several microns thick whose degree of orientation is a function of the processing temperature and duration. Representative films of YBa2Cu3O7−x on MgO begin to exhibit orientation with the c axis perpendicular to the film plane at heat treatments above 900 °C. The superconducting behavior of a highly oriented film produced at 990 °C is characterized by Tc(onset)=89 K, Tc(R=0)=77 K, and Jc=103 A cm−2 at 65 K.

    Notes: A new, ordered perovskite structure was stabilized as a majority phase in superconducting Y2Ba5Cu7O20−δ'(F/Cl)δ‘ films epitaxially grown on SrTiO3(100). The new phase was formed via fluorination or chlorination introduced during the post-deposition O2 furnace anneal for recrystallization. The structure is determined by x-ray diffraction to be an orthorhombic unit cell [a∼b=3.86(1) A(ring), c=27.24(6) A(ring)] with reflection conditions consistent with a fully twinned A-centered cell. Films containing primarily the new phase show a lower resistivity ρ(300 K)∼177 μΩ cm, a comparable ratio of ρ(300 K)/ρ(100 K)∼3.0, and a lower superconducting temperature of 78–74 K when compared to Y1Ba2Cu3O7.

    Notes: A new technique using ion beams to produce patterned thin films of the high-temperature perovskite superconductor YBa2Cu3O7−x from spin-on metalorganic precursors is described. Spin-coated precursor films are irradiated through a stencil mask with 2.5 MeV He+ ions, developed in solvent to remove unexposed material, and the remaining patterns are pyrolyzed. Black films of YBa2Cu3O7−x with pattern dimensions on the millimeter scale exhibit orientation with the c axis perpendicular to the film after heat treatments of 990 °C for 3 min. The conductivity of a highly oriented, ∼0.4-μm-thick patterned film is characterized by onset of the superconducting transition at 84 K and zero resistivity at 68 K, similar to those of an unirradiated film given the same thermal treatment. Studies on the nature of the ion beam exposed material are discussed.
