    Notes: Abstract. The interrelationships of leaf diffusive conductance, tap root cell turgor pressure and the diameter of the tap root of sugarbeet were studied. The study was conducted on well-watered plants growing in pots under artificial light in the glasshouse. In a typical experiment, on illumination (400 μmol m−2 s−1) leaf conductance increased from 0.6 to 7.4 mm s−1. Cell turgor pressure in the tap root decreased from 0.8 MPa to 0.45 MPa and the root diameter (9.0 cm) contracted by 145μm. Removal of light resulted in the reversal of each of the above parameters to their previous values. Quantitively similar results were obtained when sugar beet plants were uprooted and the response of each of the parameters was measured. The sequence of events however was different. On stimulation by light, changes in leaf diffusive conductance preceded the turgor and root diameter changes (which were simultaneous) by some 15–20min. In contrast, on uprooting the simultaneous changes in root turgor pressure and diameter preceded the changes in leaf conductance. The lag times between changes in diffusive conductance and turgor pressure in the root were between 20 and 30 min.Tap root turgor pressure and diameter correlated strongly and permitted the calculation of an apparent whole root volumetric elastic modules (55–63 MPa). The small changes in tissue volume relative to the transpiration rate suggest that the tap root is not a significant source of transpirational water during the day.

    Notes: This work is part of a larger study carried out at Murray Royal Hospital, Perth, Scotland. The study was concerned with staff morale under two distinct management approaches towards the care ofthe elderly patient with dementia. In one ward a dynamic, high stimulation approach was adopted including reality orientation, reminiscence therapy and socialization therapy. This was run in a well-structured manner by the ward staff and other agents. The other ward had no such structure imposed and was left to carry out ‘traditional’ nursing care to a high standard. The tool used to collect the data was a precoded questionnaire developed by Jones & Galliard. The hypothesis on which the study was based was as follows, ‘that morale is increased in nursing staff involved in a high stimulation ward environment for the hospitalized elderly patient with dementia’. The findings ofthe study appear to indicate that the hypothesis is supported. It appears that the imposition ofthe structured high stimulation management approach was responsible for such an outcome and that nursing staff respond well to such an approach.

    Notes: Abstract Osmotic potentials and individual epidermal cell turgor pressures were measured in the leaves of seedlings of Suaeda maritima growing over a range of salinities. Leaf osmotic potentials were lower (more negative) the higher the salt concentration of the solution and were lowest in the youngest leaves and stem apices, producing a gradient of osmotic potential towards the apex of the plant. Epidermal cell turgor pressures were of the order of 0.25 to 0.3 MPa in the youngest leaves measured, decreasing to under 0.05 MPa for the oldest leaves. This pattern of turgor pressure was largely unaffected by external salinity. Calculation of leaf water potential indicated that the gradient between young leaves and the external medium was not altered by salinity, but with older leaves, however, this gradient diminished from being the same as that for young leaves in the absence of NaCl, to under 30% of this value at 400 mM NaCl. These results are discussed in relation to the growth response of S. maritima.

    Notes: Abstract Excision and subsequent incubation of the apices (1 cm) of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seedling roots in simple media severely reduced elongation from 28 mm·(24 h)-1 in intact roots to a maximum of 2 mm·(24 h)-1 in excised roots. The reduction in growth was accompanied by a loss of cell turgor in the growing zone but was correlated with a hardening of the cell walls in this region. Rheological properties were measured as percent extensibility (both plastic and elastic) using a tensiometer, and as instantaneous volumetric elastic modulus (ε i) using the pressure probe. Excision decreased plastic and elastic properties with a half-time of some 60 min. Plastic extension was reduced from 2.5% to 0.9% and elastic from 4.8% to 2.6% for an 8-g load. By contrast, ε i was increased by excision. The observed reduction in root elongation rate was accompained by a reduction in mature cell length from 240 μm to 40 μm and a shortening of the zone of cell expansion.

    Notes: Summary K/Na ratios have been determined in the leaves of salt-treated plants of 14 disomic substitution lines in which each of the D-genome chromosomes replaces the homoeologous A- or B-genome chromosome in the tetraploid wheat variety Langdon (AABB genome). Aneuploid lines of hexaploid bread wheat (cv Chinese Spring) having a reduced or an enhanced complement of chromosome 4D have also been examined. These investigations show that the gene(s) determining K/Na ratios in the leaves of wheat plants grown in the presence of salt is located on the long arm of chromosome 4D.

    Notes: Summary In the first part of this review the main features of salt tolerance in higher plants are discussed. The hypothesis of intracellular compartmentation of solutes is used as a basis for models of tolerance mechanisms operating in roots and in leaves. Consideration is given to the implications of the various mechanisms for the yield potential of salt-tolerant crop plants. Some work on the more salt-tolerant members of the Triticeae is then described. The perennial speciesElytrigia juncea andLeymus sabulosus survive prolonged exposure to 250 mol m−3 NaCl, whereas the annual Triticum species are severely affected at only 100 mol m−3 NaCl. In the perennial species the tissue ion levels are controlled within narrow limits. In contrast, the more susceptible wheats accumulate far more sodium and chloride than is needed for osmotic adjustment, and the effects of salt stress increase with time of exposure. Two different types of salt tolerance are exhibited in plants capable of growing at high salinities. In succulent Chenopodiaceae, for example, osmotic adjustment is achieved mainly by accumulation of high levels of sodium and chloride in the shoots, accompanied by synthesis of substantial amounts of the compatible solute glycinebetaine. This combination of mechanisms allows high growth rates, in terms of both fresh and dry weight. At the opposite end of the spectrum of salt tolerance responses are the halophytic grasses, which strictly limit the influx of salts into the shoots, but suffer from very much reduced growth rates under saline conditions. Another variation is shown in those species that possess salt glands. The development and exploitation of crop plants for use on saline soils is discussed in relation to the implications of these various mechanisms.

    Notes: Abstract We have considered the problem of data capture in the critical care area. Review of previous work on the use of alternative input devices for speed and accuracy of data entry yields conflicting information but suggests that requirements depend on input task, data type and skill of the user. We have performed comparative studies of the QWERTY keyboard, cursor control keys, mouse and graphics tablet for data entry in two intensive therapy unit (ITU) environments. The graphics tablet proved overall the best of the devices studied. We report the potential applications of this type of input device.

    Notes: Rats were treated daily for 9 days with 100, 50, or 25 mg/kg phenytoin i.p. This treatment resulted in a significant increase in the thickness of the connective tissue capsules of the liver, spleen, and pancreas, and of the subepithelial connective tissue of the mesentery but not the epicardium or visceral pleura of the lung where exposure to the drug was via the vascular route. Many areas of connective tissue growth exhibited obvious proliferation of fibroblasts and in some areas contained seemingly large numbers of macrophages and an increase in vascularity. It was demonstrated by electron microscopy that the macrophages occasionally were seen in intimate contact with the fibroblasts.Our observations clearly showed that intraperitoneal exposure of visceral connective tissues of the rat to phenytoin rapidly resulted in a dose-related proliferation of that tissue. The presence of numerous macrophages leads to the suggestion that macrophage-derived growth factor could be responsible for the increased growth.
