Notes: [Auszug] Four strains of A. tumefaciens were examined. Two strains, IIBV7 and C-58, are virulent and have been shown to harbour a large plasmid which is associated in some way with virulence8. The other two strains IIBNV6 and NT1, are avirulent and do not contain the plasmid. Strains C-58 and NT1 are very ...

Notes: [Auszug] The conduction velocity of the action potential of the isolated giant axon has been measured over the temperature range - 1 to 4-40 C. The action potentials were recorded by two glass microelectrodes filled with 3 molar potassium chloride (resistance 10-20 MQ) inserted into the axon so that they ...

Notes: [Auszug] THE fate of nuclear material and cellular structures in keratinizing cells is uncertain1. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) disappears during keratinization, but it is not known whether the degradation products are retained by the keratinized cells, resorbed into the animal, or lost as epidermal detritus ...

Notes: Summary Quantitative trace-enrichment of cytokinins from a plant source (xylem sap from the Douglasfir, Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) has been achieved by adsorption onto octadecyl-silica columns followed by elution with ethanol. Adsorption is rapid and efficient and allows complete recovery of cytokinins at the nanomolar level. Douglas-fir sap contains at least four compounds having cytokinin activity, one of which co-elutes with zeatin and another with ribosylzeatin.

Notes: Abstract Temperatures and temperature gradients for the outer corona are obtained from brightness gradients of EUV lines that were measured with the spectroheliograph on OSO-7. Brightness gradients show considerable deviations from isothermal model calculations that include collisional excitation and photoexcitation. A negative temperature gradient that gives both positive and negative ion abundance gradients appears to be able to account for the discrepancy. For λ284 of Fe xv, perhaps the strongest line from the outer corona, measurements during 1972 appear to be consistent with (i) a temperature near 2.3×106K near the equator at ϱ = 1.3±0.1 solar radii from the solar center; (ii) (ϱ/T) dT/dϱ values near -0.7 that extend from as low as ϱ = 1.2 to about ϱ = 1.8. Temperatures from strong lines of Fe xiv and Fe xvi indicate that variations of about ±0.2×106K exist along lines of sight where emission is appreciable. There appears to be some agreement between these results and temperature measurements from ion abundances in the solar wind and Doppler width of λ5303.

Notes: The γ-radiation-induced free-radical copolymerization of ethylene and CO has been investigated over a wide range of pressure, initial gas composition, radiation intensity, and temperature. At 20°C., concentrations of CO up to 1% retard the polymerization of ethylene. Above this concentration the rate reaches a maximum between 27.5 and 39.2% CO and then decreases. The copolymer composition increases only from 40 to 50% CO when the gas mixture is varied from 5 to 90% CO. A relatively constant reactivity ratio is obtained at 20°C., indicating that CO adds 23.6 times as fast as an ethylene monomer to an ethylene free-radical chain end. For a 50% CO gas mixture, the above value of 23.6 and the copolymerization rate decrease with increasing temperature to 200°C. The kinetic data indicate a temperature-dependent depropagation reaction. Infrared examination of copolymers indicates a polyketone structure containing —CH2—CH2— and —CO— units. The crystalline melting point increases rapidly from 111 to 242°C., as the CO concentration in the copolymer increases from 27 to 50%. Molecular weight of copolymer formed at 20°C. increased with increasing CO, indicating M̄n values 〉20,000. Increasing reaction temperature results in decreasing molecular weight. Onset of decomposition for a 50% CO copolymer was measured at ≈250°C.
