Notes: Abstract The male Bengalese finch,Lonchura striata, has two types of song behaviour (directed song, DS and undirected song, US). DS and US share a basically identical syllable repertoire, sequence pattern and tempo, but differ in the time course of appearance during the maturational process. In order to examine whether this results from a difference in testosterone (T) dependency, we studied developmental changes in the fecal T level and the amounts of DS and US during the 2–4 month period (N=7). DS appeared between 83 and 94 days of age, 4–16 days after a rise in the fecal T level. In contrast, US appeared earlier and at high frequency even when T was still at a very low level. These results suggest that DS is more dependent on the T level than US, and is not activated until the T level rises during the maturational process.

Notes: Abstract We investigated the hippocampal region in six patients diagnosed with possible Alzheimer's disease (AD), eight patients with probable AD, and eight agematched controls, using a high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging technique. Coronal T1-weighted images were used for area measurements of the hippocampal formation (HF), parahippocampal gyrus (PHG), and temporal lobe (TL), normalised to cranial area. Both the normalised HF and PHG were significantly smaller in both AD groups than in the controls, but did not differ between patients with possible and probable AD. The normalised TL was significantly smaller in patients with probable AD than in those with possible AD and controls, but did not differ in patients with possible AD and controls. We conclude that hippocampal and parahippocampal atrophy occurs in early AD, and is more useful than neocortical atrophy for early detection of the disease. At a more advanced stage, the neocortical area is involved.

Notes: Abstract Eighty-four patients were examined for blood coagulability during the acute phase of Bell's palsy. Abnormally high levels of thrombin-antithrombin III complex (TAT) and α-2 plasmin inhibitor-plasmin complex (PIC) were found, with these increases statistically significant. Values tended to be higher in patients within 3 days after occurrence of the palsy when compared to values in patients 4 days or more later. Abnormal TAT and PIC levels in the acute phase then tended to become normalized during the convalescent phase of the disease. These findings indicated that activation of intravascular coagulability had occurred, with patients entering a temporary clot-forming state. Among the several hypotheses for the etiology of Bell's palsy, our findings support a circulation disorder as an influential factor.

Notes: Abstract The residual stress induced in the bonding glass bonded to a ferrite substrate was measured with a photoelastic method. The permeability and the head output showed a maximum at a specific compressive stress. This behaviour was explained by the change of induced anisotropy caused by the magnetoelastic effect.

Notes: Abstract Monodispersed TiO2 particles were used to prepare a uniformly packed green compact with a high relative density by slip casting. A suspension consisting of monodispersed TiO2 particles, solvent and binder was cast in the mould. The sintering behaviour of the green compact was investigated. The green compact could be sintered to a relative density of 〉 99% by treatment at 1050 °C for 120 min. The average grain size of the sintered body was 1.26 μm without abnormal grain growth. The green sheet cast on a glass board could be densified with no grain growth. The experimentally obtained relation between densification rate and grain size indicated a volume diffusion mechanism according to Coble's equation.

Notes: Abstract Transient response curves for exposure to several gases are observed using zinc oxide (ZnO) thin-film gas sensors. It is found that an aluminium-doped ZnO (ZnO∶:Al) sensor exhibits a high sensitivity and an excellent selectivity for amine gases. In order to discriminate between gas species such as trimethylamine (TMA), dimethylamine (DMA) and other gases pattern recognition analysis using a neural network is carried out using parameters which characterize the transient responses of the sensor for exposure to gases. The recognition probability of the neural network is 90% for TMA and DMA with constant concentration and is 100% for TMA and DMA with different concentrations, except for a concentration of 1 p.p.m.
