Notes: Abstract  In contrast to primary gastric lymphomas of B-cell type, little is known about primary gastric T-cell lymphomas. We describe three cases with remarkably similar features: diffuse growth, epitheliotropism, medium too large cell size, high apoptotic rates, and a CD3+, CD4+, CD8+, CD45RO+ immunophenotype. Clonal TCRγ gene rearrangement was shown in two cases. Epstein-Barr virus infection was excluded in two cases. Taking advantage of fresh-frozen material, we analyzed two cases further, revealing CD5–, CD16+, CD56–, CD57–, CD25+, CD30+, CD103 (αEβ7)+, bcl-2 protein+, CD95+, CD95 ligand(L)–. CD95L, however, was detected in histiocytic and fibroblastoid by stander cells. The lymphomas expressed granzyme B, perforin, and the TIA-1 antigen in various combinations. All three cases had a very unfavorable clinical course characterized by local recurrence and/or dissemination to other epithelial sites, leading to death within 6–12 months after the initial diagnosis despite surgery and aggressive antineoplastic treatment. These data suggest a novel variant of peripheral T-cell lymphoma operationally characterized as primary gastric, apoptosis-rich, CD103+, EBV-, T-cell lymphoma co-expressing CD4, CD8, CD16 and cytotoxic molecules.

Notes: Abstract Background:Mantle-cell lymphoma (MCL) is geneticallycharacterized by the translocation t(11;14)(q13;q32) leading to anoverexpression of cyclin-D1, but additional chromosomal abnormalities appearto be required for MCL pathogenesis. Patients and methods:Deletions involving chromosome 11q, whichwere recently found as recurrent aberrations in MCL, were analyzed at themolecular level in a series of 81 MCL by fluorescence in situhybridization (FISH) with probes from a contiguous set of yeastartificial chromosomes (YACs) spanning bands 11q14–q24. Results and conclusions:Loss of chromosome 11 material wasobserved in 37 of the 81 MCL cases (46%). The consensus deletioncomprised YAC 801e11 containing the ATMgene. The minimal region ofloss was further narrowed with P1–derived artificial chromosome (PAC) probes. This allowed the identification of a deletion confined to the genomic regionof ATM, which, together with intragenic mutations found in the codingsequence, suggests a role of ATMas a tumor suppressor gene in MCL.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Von 32 Elementen wurden im Konzentrationsbereich 1–104ppm (Elementmasse/Elektrodenmasse) relative Empfindlichkeitsfaktoren (REF) für die funkenmassenspektrometrische Multielementanalyse bestimmt.
Notes: Abstract Relative sensitivity factors (RSF) of 32 elements in the concentration range 1–104 ppm (mass of element/ mass of electrode) have been determined for spark source mass spectrometric analysis. Graphite and silver powder was used as conductive material. The RSF of about two thirds of the elements under investigation were found to be dependent on their concentration in the electrodes. This is thought to be due to volatilization at high temperatures whereby the concentration of these elements at the electrode surfaces is diminished. In general RSF's at silver powder electrodes are higher and necessary sparking times are shorter than those at graphite electrodes. Therefore the use of silver powder for determinations of concentrations 〈103 ppm is advantageous although experimental results show greater scatter due to inhomogeneity of the electrode.

Notes: Abstract: A chemically selective laser ion source has been used in a β-decay study of heavy Ag isotopes into even-even Cd nuclides. Gamma-spectroscopic techniques in time-resolving event-by-event and multiscaling modes have permitted the identification of the first 2+ and 4+ levels in 126Cd78, 128Cd80, and tentatively the 2+ state in 130Cd82. From a comparison of these new states in 48Cd with the E(2+) and E(4+)/E(2+) level systematics of 46Pd and 52Te isotopes and several recent model predictions, possible evidence for a weakening of the spherical N = 82 neutron-shell below double-magic 132Sn is obtained.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Für Vergleichszwecke wurden Spurenelemente in Carrara-Marmor nach Überführung des Carbonats in ein Oxid bzw. Fluorid bestimmt.
Notes: Abstract A comparative study of the oxide and the fluoride system in spark source mass spectrometric analysis was made on a sample of marble from Carrara. Two splits of this carbonate were converted into oxide and fluoride and using experimental relative sensitive factors characteristic for the oxide and fluoride systems, the elements Mg, Al, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, As, Rb, Sr, Y, Ba and Ce in these two splits were determined. The deviation of the average analytical results obtained on these two systems from their mean was 〈 20%.

Description / Table of Contents: Surface Composition, Solubility, and the Ion Activity Product of Calcite in Solutions with Auxiliary IonsUsing the method of simultaneous ion and isotope exchange the chemical composition of the surface layer of calcite powder in equilibrium with solutions of varying Me/Ca molar ratios is determined (Me = Mg2+, Co2+, Ni2+, and Fe2+ ions). The ion exchange isotherms show a marked bend in the surface reactivity when a surface molar ration of ∼1 and ∼3 is reached. The solubility of calcite initially decreases on the addition of Co2+ or Ni2+ ions to the solution whereas it increases in the presence of Mg2+ or Fe2+ ions. The activity product of the pseudo compound, CaxMe(1-x)CO3, decreases in the Ni2+, Co2+ or Fe2+ exchange experiments, however, it increases considerably in those with Mg2+ ions.
Notes: Mit der Methode des gleichzeitigen Ionen- und Isotopenaustausches wird die chemische Zusammensetzung der Oberfläche eines Calcitpulvers im Gleichgewicht mit Lösungen verschiedener Me/Ca- Verhältnisse bestimmt (Me = Mg2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Fe2+).
