Notes: We have fabricated a multilayer structure consisting of a semiconductor-magnetic hybrid material GaAs:MnAs and GaAs/AlAs distributed Bragg reflectors, that is a one-dimensional semiconductor-based magnetophotonic crystal. Significant enhancement of magneto-optical effect was demonstrated at a controlled wavelength at room temperature. Magneto-optical spectra of this multilayer system were well explained by theoretical calculations, and the mechanism for the enhancement of magneto-optical effect was shown. Also, the required conditions for application to optical isolators are discussed and some potential solutions are indicated. Since our structure is composed of all semiconductor-based materials, the present results potentially lead to semiconductor based magneto-optical devices integrated with III–V-based optoelectronics. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The goldfish optic nerve can regenerate after injury. To understand the molecular mechanism of optic nerve regrowth, we identified genes whose expression is specifically up-regulated during the early stage of optic nerve regeneration. A cDNA library constructed from goldfish retina 5 days after transection was screened by differential hybridization with cDNA probes derived from axotomized or normal retina. Of six cDNA clones isolated, one clone was identified as the␣Na,K-ATPase catalytic subunit α3 isoform by high- sequence homology. In northern hybridization, the expression level of the mRNA was significantly increased at 2 days and peaked at 5–10 days, and then gradually decreased and returned to control level by 45 days after optic nerve transection. Both in situ hybridization and immunohistochemical staining have revealed the location of this transient retinal change after optic nerve transection. The increased expression was observed only in the ganglion cell layer and optic nerve fiber layer at 5–20 days after optic nerve transection. In an explant culture system, neurite outgrowth from the retina 7 days after optic nerve transection was spontaneously promoted. A low concentration of ouabain (50–100 nm) completely blocked the spontaneous neurite outgrowth from the lesioned retina. Together, these data indicate that up-regulation of the Na,K-ATPase α3 subunit is involved in the regrowth of ganglion cell axons after axotomy.

Notes: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with topical 5-aminolaevulinic acid (5-ALA) is a promising new treatment for superficial malignant nonmelanoma tumours, including cutaneous malignant lymphoma. Here, we report a case of cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma effectively treated by PDT with topical 5-ALA in combination with radiotherapy.

Notes: Eosinophilic pustular folliculitis (EPF) is characterized by erythematous patches of large follicular papules and pustules involving mainly the face. Although various treatments have been attempted for EPF, including systemic and topical steroid, diaphenylsulphone, colchicine, minocycline as well as UVB phototherapy, there is no consensus on the first choice of treatment. We report a typical case and summarize 25 patients with EPF treated in our hospital between 1978 and 1998. Indomethacin was most frequently used (12/25) and showed clinical improvement in the majority of the cases (11/12). The effect of indomethacin was usually observed within 1–2 weeks after initiation of treatment. Decrease of peripheral blood eosinophils accompanied the clinical improvement. Thus, indomethacin should be considered as a first choice of treatment for EPF.

Notes: Computer-assisted area measurement of skin lesions would be useful for the assessment of disease severity. Difficulties can be encountered, however, when lesions cannot simply be separated using the normal threshold tool of an image analyser. Owing to body curvature, peripheral sites are usually shadowed. To obtain a well-fitting curved line to account for body curvature-induced glare and shadow, we devised a simple C-programme for averaging neighbouring pixels on the same horizontal line. An image was captured from a colour slide to the image analysis system. C++ was used for programming. Execution of the averaging programme with the original image resulted in a background brightness image file. When this was subtracted from the original image, the lesions were easily detected using the standard threshold tool and the percentage of area involved was calculated. This method is sufficiently accurate for the assessment of disease severity.

Notes: Scomberomorus niphonius juveniles were fed with alternative prey differing in body shape: elongate and laterally compressed (clupeid or gobiid larvae) and deep-framed bodies (paralichthyid larvae) in aquaria. The ratio of prey larvae with elongate and laterally compressed body: prey larvae with deep-framed body in the aquaria was 1 : 1. The juveniles fed almost exclusively on the larvae with an elongate and laterally compressed body.

Notes: Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus larvae established first feeding 3 days after hatching (DAH) at c. 17° C. Non-fed fish reached irreversible starvation at age 5 DAH. Non-fed fish showed similar feeding rate and feeding intensity as the fed fish when they were provided with prey before 5 DAH, after which the starved larvae did not feed even when prey became available. None of the six morphological measurements examined (total length, body height, eye height, head height, gut height and myotome height) showed significant differences between the non-fed and fed larvae until 5 DAH. Normal development continued only in the fed group, and the non-fed larvae showed reverse growth or body collapse after 5 DAH. Owing to the shrinkage and collapse at the top of head due to starvation, head height could be a sensitive indicator of starvation in Japanese flounder larvae. In the fed treatments, high mortality occurred from first feeding (3 DAH) to irreversible starvation (5 DAH), accounting for about two-thirds to three-quarters of the overall mortality (46–52%) throughout the experiments. This mortality was not prey density or larval density dependent. Mortality during the same period in the non-fed larvae accounted for about a third of the overall mortality (100%).

Notes: Starved Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus larvae were characterized by relatively lower levels of RNA content throughout their early life stages. Significant differences in the RNA: DNA ratios were found between fed and starved fish, and appeared to increase as starvation proceeded. Ontogenetic changes in RNA: DNA ratios were clearly observed during metamorphosis, especially decreasing during the period from the late-metamorphic to postmetamorphic stages. The criteria established from these laboratory experiments, were applied to the nutritional condition of wild larvae and juveniles collected in Wakasa Bay, Sea of Japan in 1994 and 1995 by measuring RNA and DNA content. Starved fish were mainly found in stage I (settling stage) fish during the late season of settlement in 1995. This suggests that starvation could be associated with settlement in Japanese flounder.

Notes: Juvenile flounder Paralichthys olivaceus were size-graded into three groups (small, large and mixing of small and large) and social interactions (feeding, aggressive attacking and activity) and growth of the fish were investigated. Growth of the subordinates (small flounder) was markedly suppressed by the presence of the dominants (large flounder). Dominants did not significantly suppress the overall food intake of the subordinates, but exhibited high aggressive attacking on the subordinates and consequently inhibited their activity. Size dominant interactions had little influence on the aggressive behaviour, feeding, activity and growth of the dominants. Results substantiated the hypothesis that the retardation in the growth of the subordinate flounder was attributed to the physiological costs of ‘stress’ by the aggression of the dominants. Individual differences in aggressive behaviour, feeding and activity were at least partly responsible for the growth depensation of the juvenile flounder. The dominants could not effectively defend the food in excess and disproportional food acquisition of the subordinates and dominants was not the primary mechanism responsible for the size hierarchy effect. In culture, size grading of the early juvenile flounder could markedly improve the growth and survival and thus possibly increase the overall biomass production of the flounder.
