Notizen: Measurements of hydrogen loss and luminescence as a function of annealing temperature in porous silicon suggest that luminescence is attributable to electron-hole recombination in SiOx surface layers with an intensity that is dependent upon the surface hydrogen content. The luminescence is composed of three Gaussian bands similar to those found in amorphous SiO2. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy show porous silicon has SiOx on the surface, which is comprised of many particles of about 10 nm size. Collectively, the data strongly support the previously proposed quantum confinement/luminescence center model. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The vapor deposition of Bi on Pt(111) at 110 and ∼600 K have been characterized by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), thermal desorption mass spectroscopy (TDMS), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and changes in the work function (Δφ). At 110 K Bi growth follows a layer-by-layer mechanism. At ∼600 K Bi fills the first monolayer (θBi(approximately-equal-to)0.56) relatively uniformly, followed by 3D island growth. Bi desorption is characterized by a large, coverage-dependent desorption energy, Edes =(81−34.2 θBi ) kcal mol−1, in the first monolayer, and zero-order kinetics with constant activation energy (Edes =53–56 kcal mol−1) for the multilayer. Many LEED patterns are observed within the first monolayer for both cold and hot substrates. Structural models for these are proposed which are consistent with coverages obtained by AES. Annealed structures show continuous compression of hexagonal Bi overlayers with increasing coverage, subject to mild substrate constraints. At 110 K and θBi 〉0.33, uniaxial compression is instead seen, due to an unsurmounted energy barrier. Weakly repulsive lateral Bi–Bi interactions (due to dipole repulsions) dominate submonolayer growth. These results for the semimetal Bi are intermediate in behavior between alkali and transition metal overlayers on Pt(111). This is consistent with the relative strengths of the surface dipole of these adsorbed metals.

Notizen: [Auszug] Ascomycetes are the largest group of true fungi, and characteristically produce their sexual spores in a sac-like structure called the ascus. They include medicinal agents (such as ergot), plant pathogens (Dutch elm disease is caused by an ascomycete) and yeasts used in ...

Notizen: [Auszug] SIR - We describe here the oldest unequivocal fossil lichen, from thin sections of Early Devonian (400 million years old) Rhynie chert. Lichens are symbiotic associations between a fungus (mycobiont) and a green alga or cyanobac-terium (photobiont) which range from mutualism to controlled ...

Notizen: Abstract In Resonant Laser Ablation (RLA), material is related and selectively ionized by a low-energy pulse from a tunable laser. The selectivity and efficiency allow detection and quantitation at very low concentrations. We demonstrate that RLA has potential use in profiling thin layer and multilayer structures. Quantitative results are reported on the analysis of 20 and 100 Å copper thin films on Si(110) surfaces. Removal rates range from 10−3 to 10−2 Å/shot. Prospects for interrogation of dopants and impurities are also evaluated.

Notizen: Silicon nitride powders have been thermally oxidized between 700 and 1200°C in a high-purity N2-20% O2 gas environment. The powders were subsequently analyzed by x-ray photoelectron and Auger electron spectroscopies for evidence of oxynitride surface states. Measurements were made on the Si 2p, O 1s, N 1s, C 1s, F 1s and Si KLL transitions, the latter being obtained using bremsstrahlung radiation from the Mg x-ray source. As a function of increasing temperature the data show a clear progression of spectral binding energies and peak shapes that are indicative of more advanced surface oxidation. However, definitive analysis of these data rests on the combined use of both Auger and photoelectron data to define the oxidized surface states for a system that involves two electrically insulating end states: silicon nitride and silicon dioxide. Curve fitting the Si 2p and Si KLL transitions as a function of oxidation, coupled with the use of Auger parameters for the starting silicon nitride and final silicon dioxide, reveals no measurable evidence for an interphase oxynitride in the thin oxide scales of this study where the silicon nitride substrate is detectable. Possible incorrect assignment of oxynitride bonding, from shifted Si 2p states in the carbon referenced spectra, is attributable to band bending as the transition is made from incipient to fully formed silicon dioxide. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
