Notes: Several halogenated anaesthetic agents have been associated with hepatotoxicity. We report a case of fulminant, fatal hepatic necrosis after uneventful isoflurane anaesthesia in a patient without previous liver disease, who may have been sensitised by previous exposure to enflurane. Although no anti-trifluoroacetyl antibodies could be detected in the patient's serum, isoflurane hepatotoxicity seems very likely to be the reason for fulminant hepatic failure in this patient.

Notes: Abstract PURPOSE: Restorative proctocolectomy is a standard procedure in the surgical treatment of ulcerative colitis and familial adenomatous polyposis. The radical removal of the colorectum with construction of an ileostomy often results in high stoma losses. These may lead to changes in the electrolyte and acid-base balance and to alterations in renal and suprarenal gland function. METHODS: In this study 33 patients who received an ileoanal pouch before and after proctocolectomy were investigated at different time intervals for electrolyte changes, alteration of the acid-base balance, kidney function, and hormonal changes of the suprarenal glands. Measurements were performed before proctocolectomy, ten days after proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis under protective loop ileostomy, before ileostomy closure, and 6 to 12 months after ileostomy closure. Neither acute renal failure nor other vital complications were observed. RESULTS: Statistical analysis showed a significant decrease of urine pH to 5.4±0.22 (before ileostomy closure) and metabolic acidosis (pH 7.32±0.04; base excess −1.3±5.6 (before ileostomy closure)). Likewise, we found a decrease in renal clearance to 86 ml/minute (before ileostomy closure) without signs of tubular damage. The most important change during the phase with ileostomy was a functional secondary hyperaldosteronism with aldosterone levels of 63.2±70.8 ng/dl (before ileostomy closure). In comparison with preoperative levels, there was a ten-fold increase in mineralocorticoid adrenal activity. Additionally, during the period with protective ileostomy, the hepatic synthesis of aldosterone-18-glucuronide was only slightly increased, and the cortisol/cortisone ratio was extremely decreased. CONCLUSIONS: These results show that restorative proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis and protective loop ileostomy significantly influences fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balance. Functional secondary hyperaldosteronism is of central importance for subsequent renal recompensation. Approximately one-half year after ileostomy closure, the endogenous hormones with mineralocorticoid effects returned to normal levels.

Notes: Abstract The electron-capture decay of Gd151 was investigated by means ofγ- andγ-γ-coincidence spectrometry, using scintillation counters. Besides the knownγ-rays of 22 kev, 154 kev, 175 kev, 244 kev and 308 kev additionalγ-transitions with energies of 107 kev and 350 kev could be assigned to the decay of Gd151.γ-γ-coincidence measurements showed the following cascade transitions: (107 kev–244 kev), (154 kev–175 kev–22 kev) and (308 kev–22 kev). TheK-conversion-coefficients of several transitions were determined by comparing theγ-intensities and the previously known conversion electron-intensities, using a direct measurement of theK-conversion-coefficient of the 175 kev-transition by a delayed coincidence-experiment as a normalization of the relative intensities. With the available information a level-scheme for Eu151 is proposed.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine interaction of the 8·42 kev level of Tm169 was investigated using the Mössbauereffect in Tm-ethylsulfate. The hyperfine-splitting is of pure quadrupoletype; its temperature dependance between 6°K and 250°K was measured. The spectroscopic quadrupolemoment of the 8·42 kev level was determined asQ=−(1·1±0·1) barn, leading to an intrinsic quadrupolmoment ofQ 0=+(5·5±0·5) barn.

Notes: Abstract The temperature dependence of the hyperfine splitting of the 8.42 keVγ-ray of Tm169 in oxide crystals was investigated using the Mößbauer-effect. The quadrupole splitting of the first excited state in Tm169 showed a pronounced increase with decreasing temperature. This manifests a contribution of various Stark levels, which are occupied according to their Boltzmann factors, to an average field gradient at the nucleus. It is shown in a model calculation for the temperature dependence of the field gradient that the data can be explained using a maximum splitting of about 400 cm−1 of the electronic groundstate by the crystal field. The emission pattern of the Er2O3-source is broadened below 20° K. This is possibly produced by an interaction with a residual magnetic field from the surrounding Er-ions.

Notes: Abstract From Mössbauer effect measurements the magnetic momentμ=(+1.80±0.08) nm of the 83.4 keV rotational state of153Eu and the ratio of the changes of the mean square charge radiiΔ〈r 2〉 (153Eu, 83 keV)/Δ〈r 2〉 (153Eu, 103 keV)=+0.025±0.008 were determined. The results are interpreted on the basis of mixing of rotational bands by the Coriolis force.

Notes: Abstract The Mössbauer effect of theγ rays from the 74.5 keV state of Dy161 and the 80.7 keV state of Dy162 has been investigated. From hyperfine splitting patterns the magnetic moments μ(75 keV)=−(0.39±0.04) nm, μ(81 keV)=+(0.74±0.08) nm and the quadrupole momentQ(75 keV)=+(1.4±0.2)b have been determined. For the odd neutron nucleus Dy161 an effective spin g factorg s, eff=0.76 gs, free is deduced for the 75 keV level.

Notes: Abstract γ-ray spectroscopic techniques have been applied to measure properties of excited states (E *〈2MeV) in210Pb,212Po, and213At after populating these neutron rich (N=128) nuclei via18O induced few-nucleon transfer reactions on208Pb and209Bi targets. In212Po an isomeric state is located atE *=1,477 keV with a halflife oft 1/2=14.7±0.3 ns. This state is interpreted to be the 8+ yrast level which decays to the ground state via the measured $$8^ + \left( {121.1 keV} \right)6^ + \left( {223.3 keV} \right)4^ + \left( {405.1 keV} \right)2^ + \left( {727.8 keV} \right)0^ + $$ γ-cascade.α-decay (E α≈10.2 MeV) of the isomer is also observed. In210Pb the time spectra for members of the 4+ (297.8keV) 2+ (799.4keV)0+ γ-cascade show a delayed component with a halflife oft 1/2=152±13 ns which is attributed to the known 8+ yrast state atE *=1.27 MeV. For213At first results on theγ-decay of excited states are presented.

Notes: Abstract Cl38m was produced by neutron activation of chlorine containing samples in a pneumatic irradiation facility. The decay of the Cl38-isomer was investigated by various scintillation spectrometer technics. The half-life and the internal conversion coefficient α of the 0.66 MeV isomeric transition was found to beT 1/2=0.74±0.03 sec and α=(5.0±1.2)×10−4. These data suggest aM-3 transition between an isomeric state with the spinI=5− and the ground-state of Cl-38 (I=2−).

    Notes: Abstract Mössbauer experiments were performed to determine the nuclearg-factor of the 82 keV 1/2+ state in Ir191 (g=+1.083±0.009) and the 73 keV 1/2+ state in Ir193 (g=+0.9400±0.0019). TheE2/M1 mixing parameters of the corresponding (1/2+) (E2/M1) (3/2+) transitions were found to be ¦δ¦ (Ir191, 82 keV)=0.80±0.06 andδ(Ir193, 73 keV)=−0.558±0.005.
