    Theoretical study on the excitation spectrum and the photofragmentation reaction of Ni(CO)4 (1995)

    Notes: The ground and excited states of Ni(CO)4 are studied using the symmetry adapted cluster (SAC)/SAC-configuration interaction (SAC-CI) method. The experimental absorption spectrum is well reproduced by the present calculations. All the peaks observed in the range of 200∼350 nm are assigned to the electronic allowed 1T2 excited states. The third peak is assigned to the 3 1T2 and 4 1T2 states. Next, the potential energy curves of the ground and the low-lying excited states are calculated by the same method and utilized to clarify the mechanism of the photofragmentation reaction of Ni(CO)4 by a XeCl laser (308 nm). A reaction pathway involving several excited states is proposed for the photofragmentation reaction into the excited Ni(CO)3 and CO. The calculated emission energy from the former agrees well with the observed luminescence spectrum. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract The porcine antral follicles, 3–6 mm in diameter, were dissected from the ovaries of mature pigs, and then granulosa and cumulus cells were isolated from each follicle. In atretic follicles, high activity of neutral Ca2+/Mg2+-dependent endonuclease and DNA ladder formation, estimated by electrophoresis, were noted in granulosa cells but not in cumulus cells. Extremely low activity of the endonuclease and no DNA ladder formation were observed in both types of cells obtained from healthy follicles. Moreover, apoptotic cells were observed histochemically among granulosa cells only. A good correlation (r=0.987) between the endonuclease activity of granulosa cells and the progesterone/estradiol ratio of follicular fluid in each follicle was found. These results suggest that apoptosis occurs in granulosa cells but not cumulus cells in the atretic antral follicles in pigs.

    Notes: Summary The rat R-Y121B cell line is a unique cell line which has ornithine carbamoyltransferase (OCT, EC 2.1.3.3) and can be continuously cultured in a serum-free medium which lacks arginine but is supplemented with ornithine. The OCT gene expression was examined in R-Y121B cells and their parental H4-II-E cells. OCT activity in R-Y121B cells was about one-tenth of that of the adult rat liver while it was not detected at all in H4-II-E cells. Southern hybridization using an OCT cDNA probe containing the entire coding region showed that the OCT gene structure was apparently not different in R-Y121B cells, H4-II-E cells, or rat liver cells. Northern hybridization using the OCT cDNA probe detected a hybridizing signal in R-Y121B cells but not in H4-II-E cells. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) showed that an expected size of the OCT cDNA fragment was amplified in R-Y121B cells but not in H4-II-E cells. The amplified fragment was confirmed to be a real rat OCT cDNA by the digestion of this fragment with two restriction enzymes and by the nucleotide sequencing of the fragment. These results indicated that OCT mRNA was present in R-Y121B cells but not in H4-II-E cells. Amino acid analysis showed that arginine was not present in the culture medium but was present in the hydrolysate of R-Y121B cells. The present experiments indicate that transcription, translation, and processing of OCT proceeds normally and the resultant OCT functions in R-Y121B cells, whereas the transcription does not occur in parental H4-II-E cells even though these cells have the normal gene.

    Notes: Abstract Among 36 neonates with intestinal perforations (IP) between 1975 and 1996, 5 had necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC IP) and 10 had focal IPs (FIP). A histologic review of the bowel near the perforations was made to see if there was any difference between cases of NEC IP and FIP. In 1 case of NEC IP, a defect in the musculature was found in addition to disappearance of the mucosal villi and dilated vessels or hemorrhage in the submucosa. Thinning or absence of the intestinal musculature and short villi in the mucosa was observed in 3 cases of FIP, but the acute ischemic changes in FIP were much less than in NEC IP. Hypothesizing that the defective musculature in FIP may be acquired by a vascular accident either before or after birth, we examined the histology of the latest consecutive infants diagnosed as having meconium peritonitis (MP) due to in-utero volvulus and perforation. In the tissue near the perforation, there was an identical focus of thinning and interruption of the musculature while the acute ischemic changes were minimal. We speculate that thinning or absence of the intestinal musculature in FIP may be a result of a transient ischemic event occurring in-utero and that FIP may develop in the damaged intestine after birth when it is fully dilated.

    Notes: Abstract As clinicopathological features may not be sufficient to predict the progression of thymoma, we have carried out what we believe to be the first immunohistochemical study describing the relationship between the different types of thymoma and the tumour stage, on the one hand, and the expression of epidermal growth factor (EGF), EGF-receptor (EGFR), p53, v-erb B and ras p21, on the other. The positive rates versus histological types and Masaoka's clinical stages in the 47 cases were as follows: p53 (non-invasive thymoma: 41.7%; malignant thymoma category I: 82.4%; malignant thymoma category II: 83.3%), EGF (non-invasive thymoma: 4.2%; malignant thymoma category I: 11.8%; malignant thymoma category II: 33.3%) and EGFR (non-invasive thymoma: 8.3%; malignant thymoma category I: 35.3%; malignant thymoma category II: 66.7%); p53 (stages I and II: 51.7%; stages III and IV: 77.8%), EGF (stages I and II: 3.4%; stages III and IV: 22.2%) and EGFR (stages I and II: 13.8%; stages III and IV: 44.4%). These data suggest that p53 may be implicated in the initial stages of tumorigenesis and that increased expression of EGF and EGFR may play a role in thymoma progression.

Daily dietary intake was 10 |gmg for Cd and 22 μg for Pb as geometric means, of which Cd and Pb in rice accounted for 34% and 1.4% of daily Cd and Pb intakes, respectively. The counterpart values for blood were 1.11 ng/ml and 44.5 ng/ml for Cd and Pb, respectively. International comparison with recently published data suggests that the exposure to Cd in Tainan should be among the lowest in the world.

    Notes: X-ray dynamical diffraction phenomena at a Bragg angle near π/2 are studied. The X-ray transmissivity as well as the reflectivity from the (991) lattice plane of a silicon thin plate is observed. It agrees fairly well with the diffraction pattern calculated on the basis of the Darwin approach. The possibility is discussed whether a set of two crystal plates arranged face to face, in which the diffraction condition with a Bragg angle near π/2 is satisfied, may be used as a very high resolution monochromator.

    Notes: Abstract Two rare cases of small intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma with marked hypervascularity are reported. Dynamic computed tomographic and magnetic resonance images of the two cases revealed strong enhancement of the whole tumor on the early phase and prolonged enhancement on the late and delayed phases. In both cases, the tumors turned out to be well-differentiated tubular cholangiocarcinoma that contained a large number of tumor cells and few interstitial fibrous tissues. These results suggest that some intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma should be differentiated from other hypervascular hepatic tumors, especially hepatocelluar carcinoma, and that prolonged enhancement of the tumor on late and delayed phases of dynamic images could be of diagnostic value.

    Notes: Conclusions The patients group had hippocampi that were 40–43% smaller than those of the control group, but the TL excluding HF did not differ between the two groups within one month after cardiac arrest. Our previous MR imaging study (Stroke. 1994;25) showed diffuse brain atrophy in the chronic stage after cardiac arrest. We speculate that the hippocampus decreases in size earlier and/or more markedly than the other TL structures due to its greater vulnerability to ischemia.
