Notes: [Auszug] One approach to search for unrecognized hormone response systems is to systematically employ reduced stringency hybridiz-ation to screen recombinant DNA libraries for novel hormone receptors. The DNA-binding domain of the oestrogen receptor was used as hybridization probe in analysis of a AgtlO ...

Notes: Summary In the Far East two types of α-thalassemia genes, namely α-thalassemia1 (α-thal1) and α-thalassemia2 (α-thal2) exist. Definite diagnosis of the α-thal1 and α-thal2 traits is very difficult because their hematological findings are minimally abnormal or normal. This study attempts to characterize the heterozygotes by hemoglobin chain synthesis in reticulocytes from obligatory cases of the α-thal1 and α-thal2 traits. Twelve parents of babies with hemoglobin Bart's hydrops fetalis (obligatory α-thal1 trait) had the mean total radioactivity α/β ratio of 0.76±SD 0.04, while that of 7 normal controls was 1.06±SD 0.04. The α/β globin chain ratios of 16 cases, who were either parents or offspring of patients with hemoglobin H disease, were found to segregate into 2 groups, i.e. 0.78±SD 0.03 (10 cases) and 0.92±SD 0.03 (6 cases), probably representing the α-thal1 and α-thal2 traits respectively. The hematological data of the first group showed definite hypochromic microcytic red cells, similar to thoseof the parents of the hydrops. The second group had significantly higher mean corpuscular hemoglobin than the first group, compatible with α-thal2 trait. Our globin chain synthesis study thus appears to be capable of discriminating normal, α-thal1 and α-thal2 traits.

Notes: Abstract Corynebacterium diphtheriae usually produces an infection limited to the respiratory tract and the organisms rarely invade the blood stream. We report the case of a 6-year-old girl who, 2 months after an unsuccessful repair of a ventricular septal defect, developed septicaemia with nontoxigenic C. diphtheriae. The organism appeared resistant to penicillin in vitro and failed to respond to a course of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole to which it was susceptible in the laboratory. A cure was finally achieved using cephalothin and gentamicin, followed by an additional course of ampicillin and amoxicillin. Twelve previously recorded cases of diphtheritic sepsis and endocarditis are reviewed.

Notes: Abstract An Analytic solution is presented of the problem of turbulent heat transfer in pipes with internal heat generation and insulated wall by applying a recently-developed eddy conductivity model. The results agree closely with available experimental data for a wide range of Prandtl number (0.02–10.5).

Notes: Abstract The problem of laminar, natural convection flow over a slender frustum of a cone is treated in this paper. The governing differential equations are solved by a combination of quasi-linearization and finite-difference methods. Numerical solutions are obtained for Pr=0.7 and for a range of values of the transverse curvature parameter. It is shown that the effect of transverse curvature is of great significance in such flows.

Notes: Summary Persistent infections with Sendai and SSPE virus were established in Vero cells. Sequential passages of these cells were monitored by immunofluorescence and for their sensitivity to the antiviral and antiproliferative effects of interferon (IFN). The cells rapidly developed resistance to the antiviral effect of IFN as judged by the inability of IFN to inhibit the replication of exogenous Sindbis virus. This decrease was accompanied by a reduction in the induction of the 2′–5′ oligo A synthetase. Both cell lines were resistant to the antiproliferative effect of IFN. A decrease or absence of IFN receptors on the surface of the cells was not found to be the cause of their resistance to IFN.

Notes: Summary Asymptotic expansions of displacements in powers of a small parameter related to the shell thickness are re-derived with a view to investigating the way in which the leading terms depend on the thickness coordinate. The outcome of this preliminary study gives a hint concerning possible kinematic assumptions to be used as starting points for constructing thick shell theories. Then the problem of reducing the number of independent generalized displacements by enforcing all or part of the traction boundary conditions on the shell outer and inner surfaces is studied. Several thick shell theories are proposed and compared; the superiority of a certain generalized Kirchhoff-Love assumption is brought out in the particular case of circular cylindrical shells subjected to several types of thermal loadings.

Notes: Abstract Fish stomachs, 1149 for Tilapia zillii and 1698 for Oreochromis niloticus, were collected from April 1984 till April 1985 from a Nile canal in the Egyptian delta. Both species showed a significant overlap of diet (Schoener's index) among individuals ranging from 12 to 17.9 cm standard length. Outside this range differences in the importance of food of animal origin occurred. Macrophytes were the main food of O. niloticus and aquatic insects of the food of T. zillii. This initial diet overlap may have contributed to irregularity in the increase of full stomachs with increasing length, and to a decline of the stomach index (SI = stomach weight × 100/fish weight) with increase in length in O. niloticus. The stomach of either species correlated significantly with water temperature, but with daily photoperiod in O. niloticus only.
