Notes: Details about the cylindrical implosions using direct-drive irradiation on the OMEGA Laser facility are provided. The experimental configuration, including orientation, construction, and mounting of the targets is described. An attempt to characterize the modulation transfer function of the primary x-ray framing camera diagnostic results in insufficient exposure contrast but relative agreement with other determinations. The x-ray intensity of the titanium backlighter driven by the 2.5-ns-linear ramp of the laser beams is described, and the relative intensity on film is compared to similar Nova experiments. The parallax effects of different length marker layers of high-opacity dichloropolystyrene are measured, resulting in the conclusion that the marker layer length should be matched to the laser drive illumination profile. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A tentative schedule of experiments for the ignition campaign on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) has been developed. These experiments will be used to validate beam pointing and balance, to tune time history and symmetry of drive of NIF hohlraums, and to implode subignition and igniting targets. The initial target diagnostics are designed to validate beam pointing and to demonstrate the properties of the hohlraums. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We have constructed two slightly different high-speed framing cameras for use on NOVA and the OMEGA Upgrade. Both units are based on the gating of a microchannel plate, with one detector having a pore length to diameter ratio half that of the other. We will discuss the factors limiting the temporal resolution of each detector and will compare the results of modeling with gate width measurements taken using a short-pulse laser. We will also compare time-resolved x-ray images recorded using one of these devices with data from an older (∼90 ps resolution) detector. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Current plans call for a system of current mode neutron detectors for the National Ignition Facility for extending the range of neutron yields below that of the neutron activation system, for ion-temperature measurements over a wide yield range, and for determining the average neutron emission time. The system will need to operate over a yield range of 106 for the lowest-yield experiments to 1019 for high-yield ignited targets. The requirements will be satisfied using several detectors located at different distances from the target. Notes: Summary During the regeneration of the rat kidney after lesion by 500 mg folic acid/kg, the ribonucleotide concentrations (ATP, ADP, AMP, UTP, UDP, GTP, GDP) were determined. After 1, 3, and 7 days no significant changes were found, although 1 and 2 h after injection of folic acid a slight decrease in the concentrations of ATP, AMP, GTP, and UTP was measured. Mitochondria which were isolated from rat kidneys 1 and 4 days after application of folic acid showed an unchanged consumption of O2 and phosphate as compared with the controls. In mitochondria isolated 1 h after folic acid, a sharp decrease in O2-consumption and a complete inhibition of the uptake of inorganic phosphate occurred. However, the incorporation of 32P into ATP under in vivo conditions was not reduced. The unchanged synthesis of energy-rich phosphate compounds explains the rapid onset of the proliferation of the kidney. 24 h after injection of 1.5 mg HgCl2/kg, a fall of approximately 50% in the ATP-concentration was found. In the regenerative phase, only a slight increase in protein content of the kidneys was observed. Ligation of the ureter did not cause a significant drop of energy-rich adenine nucleotides. During the regenerative phase a pronounced increase in the protein content of the kidney was found. The injection of folic acid dissolved in 1 M bicarbonate produced no disturbance of kidney function. No increase of dry weight or of protein content resulted. The accumulation and precipitation of folic acid in the kidney tubules are prerequisites for the initiation of the regenerative processes.

Notes: Summary Clinical data of 48 patients with centrocytic, 83 patients with centroblastic/centrocytic and 64 patients with centroblastic lymphoma who had entered a prospective multicenter study of the Kiel Lymphoma Study Group since October 1975 were compared. Advanced (stage IV) disease at time of diagnosis, predominantly due to bone marrow infiltration, was most frequent in centrocytic (69% of patients) and in centroblastic/centrocytic (51% of patients) lymphomas as compared to only 28% of patients with centroblastic lymphoma. High survival probability of patients with localized centrocytic and centroblastic/centrocytic lymphomas after radiotherapy, contrasting with a worse prognosis of corresponding patients with centroblastic lymphoma, is compatible with the classification of these lymphoma entities as neoplasias of low-grade malignancy. However, as shown by this prospective and previous retrospective trials overall survival probability of patients with advanced centrocytic lymphoma was inferior to that observed in corresponding patients with centroblastic/centrocytic lymphoma. These findings suggest the possibility that patients with advanced centrocytic lymphoma occupy an intermediate position between typical low-grade and typical high-grade malignant non-Hodgkin lymphomas.

Notes: Summary We report on a 67-year-old man with Felty's syndrome (FS) complicated by recurrent pneumonia and an infected wound, which was not healing in spite of maximal antibiotic and local therapy. Encouraged by previous experience, we treated him with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF). His total leukocyte count rose, but the patient's pneumonia deteriorated. In addition, a previously known chronic obstructive lung disease (COLD) was exacerbated acutely. These complications finally led to his death. Postmortem examination revealed widespread pneumonia with invasive aspergillosis and a peripheral adenocarcinoma in his left lung.

Notes: Abstract Immunocytochemical investigations of fixed cells are used to enhance diagnostic accuracy in haematology and oncology. The alkaline-phosphatase/anti-(alkaline phosphatase) technique, immunoperoxidase and the avidin-biotin technique are the most important methods in immunocytochemistry. Tyramide-enhanced immunostaining is a new powerful technique. Peripheral blood smears and cytospins of mononuclear blood leucocytes have been analysed with this technique and these methods are also useful for analysis of bone marrow, cerebrospinal fluid, serous effusions and fine-needle aspirates. This review describes the results of immunocytochemistry in patients with B- and T-lymphoproliferative disorders, acute leukaemias and Hodgkin's disease. These methods are also useful for the detection of epithelial malignant cells. Immunocytochemistry supports the morphological analysis of cells in these disorders.

Notes: Summary The concentration of ferritin in the serum of normal males (n=79) was 98 µg/l (geometric mean) with a 95% confidence range of 21–447 µg/l. In nonmenstruating healthy females (n=39), the concentration was 85 (26–279) µg/l. In menstruating females, serum ferritin was 〈30 µg/l only when the duration of menstruation was more than or equal to 4 days. Patients with uncomplicated iron-deficiency anemia had a serum ferritin level 〈20 µg/l. After oral or parenteral iron therapy, serum ferritin was 〉20 µg/l in 7 of 17 patients. Serum ferritin was 〉20 µg/l in 8 of 12 patients with a simultaneous inflammatory or malignant disease. Of patients with iron-deficiency anemia, 86% had a serum ferritin level lower than 40 µg/l. A serum ferritin level 〈40 µg/l was only observed in patients with iron-deficiency anemia and not in patients with other forms of anemia. Of patients with iron-deficiency anemia and a hemoglobin concentration lower than 100 g/l, 80% had a serum iron level 〈13 µmol/l and a total iron binding capacity higher than 70 µmol/l. Anemia of chronic disorders was diagnosed with a sensitivity of 0.93 and a specifity of 0.92 in patients with serum iron 〈13 µmol/l, total iron binding capacity 〈60 µmol/l, erythrocyte sedimentation rate 〉25 mm in the first hour, and serum fibrinogen 〉4 g/l. Somewhat better was the same combination except with the serum ferritin level 〉50 µg/l instead of the iron binding capacity. However the predictive value using both combinations was too low.
