Notes: We have studied the growth and the properties of (t)a-C:F films prepared by the deposition of mass separated 12C+ and 19F+ ions as a function of the F concentration. The films are always strongly F deficient due to the formation of volatile F2 and CFx molecules during the deposition process. A maximum F content of about 25 at. % is obtained for an ion charge ratio of C+:F+=1:1. The observed mechanical, optical, electrical, and structural properties as well as the thermal stability of the films are strongly influenced by the F content. A three step progression of the film structure is evident for increasing F concentration: the amorphous three-dimensional network of tetrahedrally bonded carbon atoms of pure carbon films (ta-C) with diamondlike properties is doped for very low F concentrations (ta-C:F). A further increase of the F content results first in transformation to a graphitelike amorphous structure (a-C:F) before the deposited films become porous and to a polymerlike one for the highest F content. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Boron carbide thin films were grown by mass selected ion beam deposition using low energy 11B+ and 12C+ ions at room temperature. The amorphous films exhibit any desired stoichiometry controlled by the ion charge ratio B+/C+. Films with a stoichiometry of B4C showed the optimal combination of a high mechanical strength and a low electrical resistivity for the coating of atomic force microscopy (AFM) silicon cantilevers. The properties of such AFM tips were evaluated and simultaneous topography and Kelvin mode AFM measurements with high lateral resolution were performed on the systems (i) Au nanoparticles on a p-WS2 surface and (ii) conducting/superconducting YBa2Cu3O7−x. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This paper describes the expression analyses of the AtSTP3 gene of Arabidopsis thaliana, the functional characterization of the encoded protein as a new monosaccharide transporter, and introduces the AtSTP gene family. The kinetic properties of the AtSTP3 protein (for sugar transport protein 3) were studied in a hexose transport deficient mutant of Schizosaccharomyces pombe. AtSTP3 represents a new monosaccharide transporter that is composed of 514 amino acids and has a calculated molecular mass of 55·9 kDa. Kinetic analyses in yeast showed that AtSTP3 is a low affinity, energy-dependent H+ symporter with a Km for D-glucose of 2 mM. RNase protection analyses revealed that AtSTP3 is expressed in leaves and floral tissue of Arabidopsis. This expression pattern of the AtSTP3 gene was confirmed in AtSTP3 promoter-β-glucuronidase (GUS) plants showing AtSTP3-driven GUS activity in green leaves, such as cotelydons, rosette and stalk leaves and sepals. Wounding caused an induction of GUS activity in the transgenic plants and an increase of AtSTP3 mRNA levels in Arabidopsis wild-type plants. Polymerase chain reaction analyses with degenerate primers identified additional new AtSTP genes and revealed that AtSTP3 is the member of a large family of at least 14 homologous genes coding for putative monosaccharide-H+ symporters (AtSTPs).

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bei der Lösung quasilinear-impliziter ODEs mittels Rosenbrock-Typ-Methoden können trotz guter Stabilitätseigenschaften (A- bzw.
Notes: Abstract The solution of quasilinear-implicit ODEs using Rosenbrock type methods may suffer from stability problems despite stability properties such as A-stability or L-stability, respectively. These problems are caused by inexact computation of artificial introduced components (transformation to DAE system). The paper investigates the source of the numerical difficulties and shows modifications to overcome them.

Notes: Abstract A 4-year-old girl presented with recurrent infections. Immunoglobulin deficiency (serum and secretory IgA, serum IgG3) neutropenia and neutrophil dysfunction (defective spontaneous migration and chemotaxis) were found. T-lymphocyte counts were normal and they responded to phytohaemagglutinin but were not stimulated by Concanavalin A, pokeweed mitogen and microbial antigens in vitro. Delayed cutaneous hypersensitivity testing to purified protein derivative and candidin was negative. Despite bacille Calmette-Guérm vaccination and candidiasis, near normal β-2-microglobulin and human leucocyte antigen (HLA) class I concentrations were detected on mononuclear cells and phytohaemagglutinin-induced lymphoblasts. HLA class II antigens (HLA-DP, −DQ, −DR) were not expressed. These observations indicated a bare lymphocyte syndrome (BLS) type II. This is the first time neutrophil dysfunction has been noted in association with BLS.

Notes: Summary.  Two new classical swine fever virus (CSFV) isolates obtained from naturally infected swine were found to exhibit a cytopathogenic (cp) phenotype. According to their reactivity with monoclonal antibodies (mabs) the isolates cpBW1 and cpMVP1 were classified as antigenic types “Lothringen’92” and “Flandern’90”, respectively. In Northern blot analyses and PCR assays CSFV RNA of subgenomic length was detected in infected cells indicating the presence of defective interfering particles. Nucleotide sequencing of cDNA fragments obtained by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR allowed to localize in the genomes of the cpMVP1 and cpBW1 DIs deletions of 4,764 and 4,746, respectively. From the latter isolate a noncytopathogenic (noncp) biotype was obtained by cloning in cell culture. CSFV cpBW1 and a noncp isolate were used separately for infection of pigs. Viremia occurred much quicker after infection with cp virus and clinical signs were more prominent compared to animals infected with noncp virus.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A sample of 1'838 school children of Basle, aged 8 to 14 years, who were examined by dentists of the school dental health service, attended at the same time a 24 hour recall interview on nutritional habits. The data show that absence of caries (among 448 or 24,4% of all) is more frequent within those children who prefer fruits instead of sugar containing sweets with and especially between the meals. Since schoolchildren are not able to distinguish well between sugar- and nonsugarcontaining sweets and drinks, health education on such subjects is emphasised.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In a joint study by the school health and the school dental health service 4386 children were examined and their nutritional habits recorded. Analysis shows that mainly the consumption of sweets between regular meals and Insufficient dental hygiene are responsible for the presence of caries. While health education for dental hygiene is presently given at school nutrition education is still a neglected subject.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Caries prevention is a significant feature in preventive orthodontics. 1. Maintaining the deciduous molars intact diminishes the problem of secondary crowding. For this purpose prevention must begin very early — immediately after the eruption of the deciduous molars. Possible methods include: water fluoridation (Basle), daily fluoride supplements, information to and motivation of the parents about proper diet and oral hygiene instruction. 2. Avoiding the extractions of the first permanent molars provides a foundation on which to perform any necessary orthodontic correction. All the same preventative measures apply here with the addition of topical fluoride application and pitfissure sealants.
Abstract: Résumé A Bâle, on a mis en pratique les mesures prophylactiques suivantes: 1. 2.
