Notes: Three molecules derived from Nocardia opaca bacteria, NDCM, NWSMP, and PG, have been shown to express immunomodulating properties. The present study was aimed al assessing the effects of these derivatives on natural killer (NK) activity. Two experimental protocols were adopted, consisting of incubating whole or Percoll fractionated NK cells in vitro with those substances, and the other in which the derivatives were administered in vivo so mice and the activity assessed later. Incubation of spleen cells in vitro with NWSMP or its precursor NDCM promoted NK activity. This effect could be observed after only 2 h of incubation and continued until day 2. Percoll fractions 1–3, which contain most of the NK activity, were enhanced to a similar extent. Band 4, which is usually devoid of such activity, remained unresponsive even after contact with the N. opaca derivatives. PG was practically ineffective upon all the subsets. The results of experiments in vivo correlated with those obtained in vitro in that NWSMP and NDCM, but not PG, promoted NK activity. Bands 1–3 were similarly enhanced, the effect was observed after short treatment times, and could be partially cancelled by the concomitant administration of anti interferon antibodies (anti-IFN Ab). All these findings suggest that the promoting effects of N. opaca derivatives are mediated through alpha/beta IFN. In contrast to the results observed on spleen NK cells. NK cells from the peritoneum displayed susceptibility mainly to PG, and much less to NWSMP or NDCM. The administration of PG to mice in vivo had a particularly marked promoting effect upon the cytotoxic activity of peritoneal cells. One logical explanation for the difference observed between PG and NWSMP or NDCM may be related to the specific IFN inducing properties of these compounds as well as to die different responsiveness of die NK cells present in the spleen and peritoneal cavity.

Notes: Summary At birth, hepatic ‘active’ and ‘dichloracetate-activated’ pyruvate dehydrogenase complex activities in the newborn of normal, mildly diabetic, and severely diabetic rats were similar. The ‘active’ and ‘dichloracetate-activated’ pyruvate dehydrogenase complex activities increased significantly during the first 2 and 6 postnatal h, respectively in the three groups of neonates (p〈0.05). The greatest increase in both ‘active’ and ‘dichloroacetate-activated’ pyruvate dehydrogenase complex activity was observed in the neonates of mildly diabetic rats. Administration of glucose or insulin at birth to the newborn of normal rats caused a significant increase in the percentage of ‘active’ pyruvate dehydrogenase complex activity within 1 h (p〈0.01). Similar treatment caused no significant increases in the newborn of severely diabetic rats. The transient increases in ‘active’ pyruvate dehydrogenase complex activity in the neonates of normal and diabetic rats were consistent with rapid disappearance of blood lactate during the first hours of postnatal life.

Notes: Abstract Different formulations, composed of the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A, diepoxidized cardanol as reactive diluent, an anhydride as curing agent, and a tertiary amine as curing catalyst, with/without the use of an epoxy fortifier, were analysed. The effect of the fortifier on the diluent was also observed. The overall kinetics of curing was observed to follow a simple Arrhenius-type temperaturedependence, with an activation energy in the range 54–120 kJ/mol, with first-order kinetics up to 85% conversion. An increase in activation energy was observed with an increase of diluent content. The curing reaction was found to follow a three-step mechanism, involving a nucleophilic bimolecular displacement reaction, for which an explanation was offered. Incorporation of the fortifier lowers the curing temperature, but does not alter the final degree of reaction.

Notes: Abstract Five commercially available systems for identification of coagulase-negative staphylococci to the species level were evaluated using 163 clinical staphylococcal isolates. The conventional method of Kloos and Schleifer served as reference method. The API 20GP system showed the highest rate of agreement with the reference method, correctly identifying 98.8% of the isolates. The Microscan system had an overall rate of agreement of 96.3 %, and Staph-Trac, Sceptor and Staph-Ident rates of 88.8 %, 87.6 % and 84. % respectively.

Notes: Summary Three isocoumarins have been isolated from a strain ofStreptoverticillium sp. and all inhibit the calmodulin-sensitive cyclic guanosine 3′,5′-monophosphate phosphodiesterase (EC 3.1.4.17, Boehringer Mannheim). Two of the compounds, 6,8-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-3-methyl isocoumarin and 6,7,8-trihydroxy-3-methyl isocoumarin have previously been isolated fromStreptomyces. The third fermentation product, 6,8-dihydroxy-3-methyl isocoumarin, was also found as a metabolite ofCeratocystis minor, a fungal species associated with the blue stain disease of pine [2,3].

Notes: Summary Field experiment was conducted to show the effect of one irrigation of 10 cm water applied to durum wheat (Triticum durum) at crown root initiation stage, active tillering stage, anthesis stage and compared them with non irrigated plot using A-206, A-28, A-1-8-8-42-1, G.W.-1 and A-23-10 genotypes under the conditions of salt affected areas having shallow saline aquifer, on quality, yield and mottling phenomena in wheat grain. Application of irrigation significantly increased the yield and decreased the per cent mottled grain and the maximum achievement was obtained when water was applied during the stage of anthesis. Non mottled grain contained higher protein than mottled grain and there were no considerable differences in other biochemical constituents. Genotype G.W.-1 stands first in its yield performance and low mottled grain.

Notes: Abstract Methods for the preparation and analysis of a new renal radiopharmaceutical,99mTc-thiodiglycolic acid (TDGA), are reported. The kit for Tc-TDGA contains a lypophilized acidic (pH 2.5) mixture of 5 mg TDGA and 0.05 mg SnCl2·2H2O. Acetate buffer has been found to be a suitable solvent for paper chromatography of99mTc-TDGA. The results of the quantitative organ distribution studies in rats and rabbits indicated the characteristics of99mTc-TDGA to be intermediate to the renal tubular agent131I-Hippuran and the GFR agent99mTc-DTPA.
