Notes: Valence bands of Ga/As/Ge (001) monolayer superlattices (MLSLs) are calculated by Harrison's tight-binding method. The MLSLs have two possible types of growth cycles: a (Ga,As,Ge,Ga,As,Ge) cycle for an antiphase type (AP type) and a (Ga,As,Ge,As,Ga,Ge) cycle for a normal phase type (NP type). Cations and anions in the AP type occupy "antisites'' of the zinc blende structure while those in the NP type occupy only "normal sites.'' The two types have distinct features of the valence bands concerning degeneracy of the bands at the zone boundary, splitting of the valence-band maximum due to the tetragonal symmetry, and valence-band discontinuity in a (bulk Ge)/(the MLSL) junction.

Notes: The spectral quantum efficiencies and reflectances of p-i-n-type Si photodiodes and a Schottky-type GaAsP photodiode were measured in the wavelength region between 105 to 300 nm. These results are compared with an optical model using complex refractive indices. The spectral relative external quantum efficiencies are well interpreted within the model by assuming that the production energy of an electron-hole pair, ε, is wavelength independent. It is suggested that surface recombination of minority carriers occurs in some devices. The internal quantum efficiency for the GaAsP photodiode is shown to be constant in the photon energy range below about 5.4 eV. The recombination loss and the ε value are separately estimated.

Notes: A demountable vacuum window of fused quartz was designed and successfully used for a high-power circular waveguide system combined with 28-GHz gyrotrons for electron cyclotron resonance heating experiments in the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror. The power reflection coefficient is very low (≤0.1%) and it works satisfactorily at the transmitted power level of 120 kW with 60-ms pulse width. No problems are expected up to 200-kW transmission with 0.1-s duration.

Notes: Abstract A CPITN survey was conducted involving 12832 Japanese subjects from 7 to 64 years of age. Subjects under 18 were schoolchildren, and 18-year-old and older subjects represented various social backgrounds, having been randomly selected from both urban and rural Japan. Fifty percent of the 7-yr-old children had signs of periodontal disease, and this percentage increased with increasing age. In those under 14, this increase in periodontal disease was mainly due to an increase in the proportion of children developing dental calculus. Subjects with 6 mm or deeper pockets were observed starting from the 20-29-yr-old age group. In subjects over this age, the prevalence of periodontal disease was higher in men than in women. The percentages of subjects having pathologic pockets had increased remarkably in the 30-44-yr-olds. In the 45–64-yr-old group, almost all subjects had some sign of periodontal disease, and the percentage of those with 4 or 5 mm pockets and 6 mm or deeper pockets were 37% and 21%, respectively

Notes: Summary The lipoperoxide values and glutathione peroxidase activity in blood plasma, along with the glutathione peroxidase, catalase and cupro-zinc superoxide dismutase activities in erythrocytes were investigated in 60 women with Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus and in 71 healthy women. The mean lipoperoxide value and the mean plasma glutathione peroxidase activity in the diabetic patients were significantly higher than those in the control subjects (lipoperoxidep〈0.001, plasma glutathione peroxidase activityp〈0.01). The plasma glutathione peroxidase activities did not, however, correlate with the plasma lipoperoxide values. The erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase activity was approximately ten times higher than that of the plasma glutathione peroxidase activity, nor did they correlate with each other. In contrast to the findings of other authors on the activities of the protective enzymes in erythrocytes against oxidative damage, there were no significant differences of erythrocytes glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase activities between diabetic and control women.

Notes: Summary Using the Southern blot hybridization technique, four cases of the primary malignant lymphomas of the brain, histologically diffuse large cell lymphoma, were examined for the immunoglobulin gene rearrangements. In three lymphomas, the rearrangements were observed in both heavy and light chain genes, providing strong evidence for a B cell lineage of these tumors. On the other hand, in the remaining lymphoma, the rearrangement was observed only in the heavy chain gene. Despite this, immunohistochemical examination revealed positive stainings for heavy and light chain immunoglobulins in tumor cells, suggesting the occurrence of light chain gene rearrangement at the undetectable level. Thus, B lymphocytic differentiation at the gene level was demonstrated in three, or possibly all, of the primary intracerebral malignant lymphomas examined. Since no more than two rearrangements were detected in each immunoglobulin gene, these lymphomas were considered to be monoclonal in nature.

Notes: Summary An immunohistochemical study was performed on small lymphoid cells present in frozen tissue sections of seven cases of primary B cell malignant lymphomas of the brain by using monoclonal antibodies to T cell (Leu-1, OKT-11, Leu-3a, and Leu-2a) and B cell (BA-1 and Leu-12) surface markers. In all the seven cases, positive reaction for Leu-1 and OKT-11 was seen in the majority of the small lymphoid cells which were dispersed among the lymphoma cells or clustered around blood vessles. The large neoplastic cells were unstained by these antibodies. Staining for T cell subsets with antibodies to Leu-3a and Leu-2a showed heterogeneous staining in each case. The ratio of Leu-3a+ to Leu-2a+ cells was less than one in six cases, demonstrating a suppressor/cytotoxic phenotype predominance. Most of these small lymphoid cells were negatively stained by antibodies to BA-1 and Leu-12. From these findings, it was shown that the small lymphoid cells observed in primary B cell lymphomas of the brain were of T cell lineage, distinct from the neoplastic cells, and probably reactive in nature. The implications of these findings are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Several live specimens of the blue-ringed octopus Octopus maculosus were collected from the Philippines in November 1985, and from Japan in February 1986, and the distribution of toxicity, along with toxin composition, in the posterior salivary gland and other soft parts were examined. Tetrodotoxin (TTX: 1400 mouse units g-1) was detected in the posterior salivary gland of a Japanese specimen, while not only the salivary gland but other soft parts were toxic in the Philippine specimens. The Philippine specimens contained TTX and anhydrotetrodotoxin, the Japanese specimen TTX, 4-epitetrodotoxin, and an unknown toxin. The posterior salivary gland, intestine and other parts were excised from the Philippine specimens and examined for bacterial flora. Twenty-two dominant strains were isolated and cultured in a 2xORI medium (Ocean Research Institute, Simidu and Tsukamoto 1985) at 20°C for 20 to 48 h. Cells were harvested by centrifugation, and disrupted by ultrasonication. The toxins were partially purified from the cell lyzate by ultrafiltration and Bio-Gel P-2 column-chromatography. Instrumental analyses disclosed that 16 of the 22 strains produced TTX and/or related substances. Six strains which clearly exhibited TTX productivity were identified as Alteromonas (2 strains), Bacillus (2), Pseudomonas (1) and Vibrio (1), based on biochemical and biological characteristics. Of these, one strain each of Bacillus and Pseudomonas produced TTX at a level detectable by the mouse assay.

Notes: Summary We examined the tumor-promoting activity of sodium taurocholate in the remnant stomach of rats. Ninety male Wistar rats, 8 weeks of age, were separated into four groups. In group I, the rats were given N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) at a concentration of 83 mg/l in drinking water for 15 weeks, and distal partial gastrectomy was performed by Roux-en-Y procedure to prevent duodenal reflux into the remnant stomach. Thereafter, a diet containing 0.25% sodium taurocholate was given for 43 weeks. The group II rats were given MNNG and gastrectomy and were then given the usual commercial diet. The rats in group III were given gastrectomy and sodium taurocholate and no previous administration of MNNG. Only MNNG was given to the rats in group IV. The incidence of malignant tumors in the remnant stomach was 40.9% (9/22), 27.3% (6/22), and 0% (0/22) in groups I, II, and III, respectively, while the incidence in the area corresponding to the remnant stomach (control) was 8.3% (2/24) in group IV. The difference in tumor incidence was statistically significant (P〈0.05) between groups I and IV but not between groups II and IV, and not between groups I and II. Six of nine tumors in group I and all six tumors in group II were located in the anastomotic area. These results suggest that sodium taurocholate promotes tumor production in the remnant stomach, and that the surgical procedure may well be associated with this enhanced tumor occurrence.
