Notes: Resonant interaction of an electron beam with a relativistically strong electromagnetic wave of right-hand circular polarization propagating collinearly along a dc magnetic field B0 has been studied analytically. The analysis has taken the full nonlinearity of the relativistic effect into account. The result of the relativistic effect on the resonant interaction is to cause the wave intensity to oscillate at a frequency near (Ω0/2ω)1/2ωp/γ0. It is found that there is an upper bound on the transverse velocity of the electron achievable through the interaction.

Notes: Following the procedure suggested by May, Ibel & Haas [J. Appl. Cryst. (1982), 15, 15–19] for the correlation of transmission data with the level of neutrons scattered incoherently into the full solid angle 4π measurements have been made of the transmission and incoherent scattering intensities of aqueous buffers of different H2O/D2O ratios at temperatures between 280 and 343 K. That it is possible to extend the proposed calibration procedure to absorbing-ions-containing buffers is also shown.

Notes: Small-angle neutron scattering experiments have been performed with aqueous dispersions of binary lipid mixtures. One component was protonated, the other was partly deuterated. By varying the mole fraction of the deuterated species the mean scattering-length density of the lipid lamellas and hence the contrast between liposomes and the solvent was changed. It is shown that this inverse contrast variation has the advantage of (i) a simpler data analysis, (ii) an increased resolution of homogeneous and heterogenous lipid distributions and (iii) a considerably increased sensitivity for the evaluation of phase diagrams in segregated lipid mixtures. Phase boundaries can now be determined to an accuracy of better than 1 mol%.

Notes: Abstract The synthesis of the urea channel inclusion complexes of poly(tetrahydrofuran)) (PTHF) is described. These complexes could be obtained in the form of single crystals forM n ≤ 1700 g/mol of PTHF as the guest, and they exhibit a hexagonal unit cell (a=8.20(2) Å,c=11.05(3) Å) very similar to the wellknown urea-n-alkane complexes. X-ray investigations, elemental analysis and density measurements suggest an all trans zig-zag conformation of the polymer chain. The formation of the complexes was exploited for the purpose of fractionation of PTHF, making use of the correlation between temperature of crystallization andM n of the included polyether chain. The distribution and the molecular weights of the fractions, obtained by extractive crystallization, were determined by reversed phase HPLC analysis and vapour pressure osmometry (VPO). Narrow fractions with Mw/Mn=1.02 were obtained from commercial PTHF samples. Successive fractionation was applied also on product mixtures from oligomer synthesis, as demonstrated for the separation of the dodecamer H-(o-(CH2)4-)12OH.

Notes: Summary We describe a method for the photometric assay of the content of carbonyl iron powder in the blood and discuss a process comparing the in vitro effects of bar magnets on flowing carbonyl iron powder suspensions. We have used this method experimentally on laboratory animals and have induced thrombosis of inner ear vessels with magnetic forces following injections of the carbonyl iron powder.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Queens ofF. polyctena kept with workers in small groups under laboratory conditions laid eggs up to four months. The rate of egg deposition depended on the proportion of queen and workers. At a given size of the growing boxes an optimum was reached at about 100 workers per queen. An increase of the protein content of the artificial standard diet did not noticeably influence the rate of oviposition and the size of the eggs. After a vernalization in the laboratory the queens produced eggs of different sizes as they do after hibernation in the forest nests. But queens kept at constant high room temperature during the whole year laid eggs of similar size only. As in nature after experimental vernalization the queens at first produced big, later on smaller eggs similar to the known w- and s-eggs of the queens of this ant species.

Notes: Summary Nineteen patients with refractory but stable ventricular premature beats (VPB) received 3 medications intravenously at 24-h intervals. Lorcainide (2 mg/kg) and placebo were given double-blind in randomized sequence and the third treatment was 100 mg lidocaine, the standard reference drug. Continuous ECG recordings were made for the first 2 hours after administration to study the antiarrhythmic effect; the stability of the arrhythmia, the absence of residual and of period effects, and the interdrug differences in efficacy were statistically evaluated. Lorcainide significantly reduced the frequency of VPB during the 2-hour period, whereas the effect of lidocaine was more short-lived. The median individual peak reduction in VPB was 96% for lorcainide and 47% for lidocaine. No significant reduction in VPB was observed with placebo. Adverse effects were acceptable with either active treatment.
