Notes: Summary We have investigated whether degeneration of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons is a potential trigger for increased NGF production in the adult rat brain. Electrolytic lesions of cholinergic neurons in the septum-diagonal band and in the nucleus basalis of Meynert induced a transient increase in NGF in the ventral hippocampus (+70%) and cerebral cortex (+125%), respectively. In contrast, selective aminergic denervation of the forebrain by electrolytic lesion of the medial forebrain bundle, did not increase NGF levels in hippocampus and cerebral cortex. Thus, a cholinergic mechanism appears to regulate NGF production in adult rat basal forebrain.

Notes: Abstract Malnutrition can be an important risk factor, especially in patients undergoing major gastrointestinal surgery. With 7–10 days of adequate preoperative parenteral nutrition, we are able to improve the nutritional status of most patients. Concentrations of several parameters of the protein compartment and immunocompetence increase significantly. The effect of preoperative parenteral nutrition on postoperative outcome has been tested in only a few properly designed comparative trials. The results were not unanimous. If the postoperative complication rate was high, preoperative parenteral nutrition significantly reduced it. Improvement in surgical technique limited the value of preoperative parenteral nutrition. However, as long as the postoperative complication rate is not zero, preoperative parenteral nutrition is indicated, especially in patients with cancer of the upper gastrointestinal tract, when a major operation is planned.

Notes: Conclusion This method is characterized by a minimal sample requirement (1 ml of blood) which also facilitates its use in pediatrics. The simple but effective preparation of sample (combination of ultrafiltration with precolumn switching technique) prolongs the life of the analytical column. The low detection limit, linearity of the calibration curve over a wide range of concentration, good recovery and the absence of interference indicates that this method is suitable for routine analysis. A major disadvantage is the relatively long analysis time (30 min).

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die benignen Systemerkrankungen mit Milzbeteiligung umfassen haematologische Krankheiten, Speicherkrankheiten, Kollagenosen, Morbus Boeck, Infektionskrankheiten, Parasitosen und sonstige mit Blutabflußstörungen der Milz einhergehende Leiden.
Notes: Summary The benign systemic disorders with involvement of the spleen are divided into haematologic diseases, thesaurismosis, collagenosis, morbus Boeck, infectious diseases, parasitosis and others. 4/5 of the cases are haematologic diseases of the erythrocytic, the thrombocytic and lymphatic system as well as myeloproliferative and aplastic syndromes. 227 of 1214 splenectomies of the last 20 years were done in benign systemic diseases. The functional and mechanical hypersplenism as a rule is the cause for operation. The specific indications, the medical pretreatment and the combination of surgery and nonsurgical measures are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Quantitative descriptions of environments near the nucleus of comet P/Halley have been developed to support spacecraft and mission design for the flyby encounters in March, 1986. To summarize these models as they exist just before the encounters, we review the relevant data from prior Halley apparitions and from recent cometary research. Orbital elements, visual magnitudes, and parameter values and analysis for the nucleus, gas and dust are combined to predict Halley's position, production rates, gas and dust distributions, and electromagnetic radiation field for the current perihelion passage. The predicted numerical results have been useful for estimating likely spacecraft effects, such as impact damage and attitude perturbation. Sample applications are cited, including design of a dust shield for spacecraft structure, and threshold and dynamic range selection for flight experiments. We expect that the comet's activity may be more irregular than these smoothly varying models predict, and that comparison with the flyby data will be instructive.

Notes: Abstract We have determined effective cross-sections for resonant transfer of excitation energy from state-selected Li2 molecules to ground state Li atoms $$Li_2 A\left( {\upsilon ',J'} \right) + Li2S \to Li_2 X\left( {\upsilon '',J''} \right) + Li2P$$ with two different experimental techniques. Absolute cross-sections were derived from lifetime measurements of 114 rotational levels of theA-state subject to resonant collisions which belong to vibrational statesv′=4, 5, 6, 7 and 11 of6Li2 and7Li2. Cross-sections amount to several thousand Å2 dropping off sharply with a resonance half-width of about 16 cm−1. The resonance behaviour of the collision cross-section inferred from lifetime data could be confirmed by a double resonance technique probing the number of excited atoms with a second laser while the first laser was scanned over the Li2 X−A absorption band. Due to their high reliability our data prove a good basis for the test of theoretical models. In contrast to earlier investigations significant deviations were found to exist between the measured cross-sections and those predicted by the first-order dipole-dipole scattering theory.

Notes: Abstract The hyperfine field (B μ hf ) at the negative muon μ− in ferromagnetic iron was investigated by means of the zero-field μ− spin precession technique. In the temperature range 320–690 K,B μ hf for μ− Fe departs from the magnetization curve of pure iron in the same way as the hyperfine field seen by a55Mn impurity in dilute MnFe measured by NMR. The hyperfine anomaly for μ− Fe relative to dilute (1.5 at.%)55Mn in iron is found to be −0.9(3)% and temperature independent over the temperature range investigated.
