Notes: Using a high Tc superconducting grain boundary Josephson junction, harmonic mixing experiments in the mm waveband were carried out, aiming at as large a harmonic number and as high a signal frequency as possible. The dependencies of intermediate frequency output on dc bias, harmonic number, frequency of local oscillator (LO), and other parameters were carefully studied. Until now, our best result was the mixing between the signal at 95 GHz and the 105th harmonic of LO at about 900 MHz. Preliminary experiments using a high Tc harmonic mixer and phase-locking loop were tried to stabilize the frequency of a mm wave source.

Notes: A relatively simple direct current sputtering deposition scheme has been employed to deposit 1000 A(ring) tantalum oxide thin films at low temperature. At (approximately-equal-to)190 °C substrate temperature, without further annealing, tantalum oxide films with a dielectric constant of 21–22 and a leakage current density as low as 10 nA/cm2 at 0.5 MV/cm electrical field strength (∼5 V of applied voltage) are obtained. These properties are achieved over a wide range of O2/Ar ratios when the total flow rate is kept constant. XPS measurements reveal that these films are nonstoichiometric with a composition of TaOx where x(approximately-equal-to)1.5. These low temperature, high dielectric constant thin films have potential applications as decoupling capacitors in very high speed electronic circuits and packaging.

Notes: The bonding structure of an amorphous fluoropolymer, AF 1600, with Al, Ag, Au, and Cu were examined using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. 100 A(ring) thick films of AF 1600 were deposited on various metal films. AlF3 was found at the AF 1600/Al interface. F detached from the −CF3 functional group of the AF 1600, diffused into the Al/Al2O3 matrix and formed AlF3. The diffusion depth of F is estimated to be (approximately-greater-than)150 A(ring). An Al film was evaporated onto an AF 1600 film. The Al film was then mechanically peeled off and the remaining polymer surface examined. AlF3 was again found. For the spin-on AF 1600 film on Ag, Au, and Cu, no chemical reaction between the metal and the polymer were found.

Notes: Novel nonlinear composite thin films containing 4-dialkylamino-4'-nitro-stilbene (DANS) and Teflon AF 1600 have been deposited by vacuum evaporation techniques. Pure DANS thin film, due to its centrosymmetric crystal structure, does not exhibit any electro-optic effect. However, composite thin films of DANS and Teflon AF 1600 with a DANS concentration of 5%–25% (by volume) do exhibit an electro-optic effect after poling. Their electro-optical coefficients are measured to be as large as 2.4 pm/V. X-ray diffraction shows that these composite thin films are in an amorphous state as-deposited as well as after poling. It is argued that the DANS molecules are in their molecular form embedded in the Teflon AF amorphous matrix, thereby allowing the effect of their large molecular hyperpolarizability to be detected. The characterization of the thin films using scanning electron microscopy is also presented.

Notes: A 24-year-old Chinese woman who has undergone staged surgery for craniofacial deformity secondary to β-thalassemia major is presented. Local clusters of Gaucher-like cells were found in the periosteum of the mandible. The histologic and ultrastructural features of these cells are described and the pathogenesis and differential diagnoses discussed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of Gaucher-like cells occurring outside the lymphohematopoietic system in thalassemic patients.

Notes: Abstract Large strain fixed-end torsion of circular solid rubber bars is studied semi-analytically. The analyses are based on various non-Gaussian network models for rubber elasticity, some of which were proposed very recently. Results are presented in terms of predicted torque vs. twist curves and axial force vs. twist curves. In some cases, the predicted stress distributions are also given. The sensitivity of the second-order axial force to the employed models is considered. The predicted results are compared with experimental results found in the literature.

Notes: Abstract The monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) inhibitorl-deprenyl, widely used to treat Parkinson's disease, has frequently been studied in animal models. We have examined the effects of several variables on activity levels of MAO-A and B in rat brain and liver following chronic (3 wks) treatment withl-deprenyl. Significant effects were observed for sex (females showed lower overall MAO-B activity in the liver), dose (MAO-A and B inhibition increased with dose, with females exhibiting greater sensitivity), route of administration (subcutaneous injection was more efficient than oral dosing), and dosing interval (MAO-B was significantly inhibited when dosing interval was increased to as long as 168 hours). Our results thus indicate that the effectiveness ofl-deprenyl in vivo is dependent on several factors and that these must be taken into account in studies involving the benefits or risks of this drug.
