Notes: Abstract Near threshold photoproduction ofη-mesons from the proton has been measured at the MAMI accelerator with the TAPS spectrometer. The mass of theη-meson was deduced from the threshold energy forη-photoproduction. The result of m η =(547.12 ± 0.06 ± 0.25) MeV supports the low value of theη-mass reported from a dp →3Heη measurement at SATURNE in 1992. Theη-decay branching ratio Γ3π0/Γγγ was measured to be (0.832±0.005±0.012).

Notes: Abstract Following median nerve stimulation, several monophasic peaks were recorded at the scalp in the 15–18 ms time range. Source analysis, using three different methods, modelled a source near the centre of the head with an orientation towards the activated hemisphere and a peak activity at 16 ms post stimulus. Magnetic recordings detected no signal in this time range, which confirmed a subcortical location of the source. From dipole localization it was not possible to assign the exact origin of the P16 source to either the subthalamic level or the thalamo-cortical radiation, because of the limited spatial resolution at the centre of the spherical head model. An estimate of the conduction velocity of the medial lemniscus pointed towards a subthalamic origin. The P16 source was preserved in two patients with a lesion of the thalamo-cortical radiation and the ventral thalamus. Further evidence for a subthalamic location of P16 was derived from the physical mechanisms generating far-field potentials.

Notes: Abstract Modern microsystem application is concentrated on the development of microstructured sensors and actuators in integrated devices. Examples of that approach are microoptical components for endoscopic surgery, sensors and micropumps in integrated liquid analysers for pollution measurements. Often microsystems replace normal systems like commercially available piston pumps by silicon made liquid pumps in the hope of reducing costs but there is a lack of finding new applications. In contrast our approach of combining special developed microcompartments constructed with transparent membranes or microsieves and microdosing systems based on the ink jet principle together with optical devices like CCD cameras allow to overcome a real bottleneck in the new field of evolutionary biotechnology, the problem of screening a huge number of samples at a reasonable price. The goal of this approach is to design new molecules like enzymes by means of Darwinian evolution i.e. mutation and selection. In applying the selection principle to self amplifying entities like cell populations, viruses or self-replicating molecules under controlled selection pressures there is an absolute need to process large numbers of these entities in parallel. Preferentially this can be done in arrays of different microstructured compartments. The selection process is designed that it leads to products which are optimized in regard of specific applications. Within the scope of this approach chemical products are deterministically synthesized in spatially adressable compartments by multihead microdrop systems.

Notes: Abstract The present work discusses the optimal placement of sensors in truss structures in order to obtain best possible information regarding the distortions of the structure. The estimation goal is to reconstruct the deformed shape of the structure, at the controlled degrees of freedom, from the sensor readings. A basic assumption is that the structure is subjected to a parametric disturbance field. We distinguish between disturbances which cause uniform or arbitrary distortions of the structure, and disturbances which cause structured distortions. Uniform distortions can be construed as white noise, that is, distortions which have no characteristics. Structured distortions are chromatic, they have some characteristics which can be helpful in estimating the shape. Although the disturbance in either case is random it is assumed that its magnitude is confined to a hyper sphere. The estimator is based on the least squares method, hence the estimated shape is the one with least RMS displacement for the given sensor readings. To evaluate the performance of each set of sensors a measure is derived based on the concept of the worst case distortion. The measure is the largest possible error between the estimated and the actual displacements, at the CDOF. For small number of sensors all possible arrangements can be generated and compared. Larger trusses with a moderate number of sensors generate prohibitively large number of possible configurations, hence heuristic search techniques are employed. The theory has been applied to 2D and 3D flexible trusses. Results show that for reasonable shape estimation a relatively large number of sensors is needed. It is also shown that when using sensors which measure mainly the distortions of the controlled degrees of freedom, significant improvements in the shape estimation can be obtained.

Notes: Abstract Results of a pion interferometry analysis are presented for the reactions S+C, S+S, S+Cu, S+Ag, S+Au and O+Au at 200 GeV per nucleon. Correlation functions were measured for pairs of negative pions in narrow windows of transverse momentum and rapidity, as a function of the three components of the momentum difference vector in cylindrical coordinates. The measured two-pion correlation functions suggest a space-time evolution of the system which proceeds in the following way for central nucleus-nucleus collisions. After interpenetration of the incident nuclei, the pion source expands in a boost invariant way along the collision axis. Estimates for the proper time interval between the onset of expansion and pion decoupling, as well as for the duration of pion emission are ∼ 4 fm/c and 〈2 fm/c, respectively. Thek T dependence observed forR S is consistent with the effect of resonance decays, alone or combined with slow transverse expansion. A linear dependence of the decoupling volume on the multiplicity is observed and indicates pion decoupling at a constant particle density. Presently available model predictions are briefly discussed
