    Notes: We have performed a detailed analysis of the low frequency 1/f noise in YBa2Cu3O7−δ and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x grain boundary Josephson junctions (GBJs) fabricated on SrTiO3 bicrystal substrates. The normalized fluctuation of the critical current, δIc/Ic, and the normal resistance, δRn/Rn were found to be almost independent of temperature and the misorientation angle. Furthermore, the magnitude of the fluctuations is very similar for both high-Tc cuprates. Correlation experiments showed that the fluctuations of Ic and Rn are anti-correlated. Our analysis strongly suggests that the source of 1/f noise in high-Tc bicrystal GBJs are localized defect states in an insulating grain boundary barrier with fluctuating electron occupation. The effective charge trapping time within single traps was found to decay exponentially with increasing bias voltage. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have fabricated Josephson vortex-flow transistors (JVFTs) based on asymmetric parallel arrays of YBa2Cu3O7−δ bicrystal grain boundary junctions. The critical current Ic and the voltage V at fixed bias current Ib were measured as a function of the control current Ictrl through a control line inductively coupled to the array. For JVFTs with an asymmetric in-line geometry a high current gain g=∂Ic/∂Ictrll ranging between about 20 at 40 K and 14 at 70 K was achieved. This current gain is much higher than that obtained for symmetric devices and results from the self-field effect of the electrode currents. In contrast to the current gain the transresistance rm=∂V/∂Ictrl of the JVFTs could not be enhanced by an asymmetric device structure. The current-voltage characteristics of the asymmetric JVFTs show pronounced step-like structures caused by the self-field of the electrode currents. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The critical current Ic of YBa2Cu3O7−δ bicrystal grain boundary Josephson junctions (GBJs) have been measured in high magnetic fields up to B=12 T. Even at the highest applied magnetic fields, Ic varied periodically with varying magnetic field. By comparing the envelope of the measured Ic(B) dependencies to model calculations we obtain information on the spatial distribution of the supercurrent density jc on a length scale down to below 1 nm. Our analysis gives clear evidence that jc has spatial inhomogeneities on all length scales down to 1 nm with a probability distribution p(a) for the characteristic length scale a of the inhomogeneities. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract An automated method for the restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis for the differentiation of mycobacteria to the species level is described. After polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of a sequence of the gene encoding the 65-kDa surface antigen common to all mycobacteria the product was investigated by RFLP analysis. For accurate determination of fragment sizes the asymmetrically fluorescein-labelled PCR product was partially digested with restriction site enzymes BstEII and HaeIII. The fragments obtained were analysed electrophoretically using an automated laser fluorescence DNA sequencer. Determination of fragment sizes revealed a deviation of ±1 base pair (bp; 0.6%) when compared to expected sizes. The validity of this approach was confirmed by analysing mycobacterial DNA obtained from pure cultures of Mycobacterium (M.) tuberculosis and alcohol-fixed smears as well as paraffin-embedded sputa of patients with culture-proven tuberculosis. Additionally a diagnostic algorithm was established by investigation of cultured M. bovis, M. bovis bacille Calmette-Guérin, M. avium, M. intracellulare and M. fortuitum. The method allows the identification of restriction enzyme sites which are only 40 bp apart. Partial restriction enzyme digestion of asymmetrically fluorescence-labelled PCR products will presumably lead to the discovery of new restriction enzyme sites.

    Notes: Abstract The rheological behavior of biodegradable blends of starch and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVOH) was measured as a function of temperature, shear rate, and moisture content using a capillary rheometer. An excellent correlation was found with a rheological model which was used as a means to characterize the influence of starch/PVOH content as well as a qualification of the viscosity for simulation studies. This model consisted of a power law dependence on shear rate, an Arrhenius dependence on temperature, and an exponential dependence on moisture.
