Notes: A beam chopping system for a cyclotron is in operation at the JAERI cyclotron facility. A combination of a pulse voltage chopper in the injection line and a sinusoidal voltage chopper after the exit of the cyclotron is adopted to produce beam pulses spaced at 1 μs–1 ms intervals from natural cyclotron beams. The chopping system was designed according to a simple formulation of the chopping process in which the multiturn extraction was taken into account. Performance of the chopping system was experimentally proved to satisfy requirements of the design. In actual operation to produce beam pulses at long intervals, however, the number of the multiturn extraction is usually larger than the assumed value in the design because of a large phase acceptance of the cyclotron. Careful tuning of the acceleration phase width or the base magnetic field of the cyclotron is necessary to reduce it. It is essential to strictly define the acceleration phase of injected beams in the central region of the cyclotron to improve this situation. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Nanometer-scale Si quantum dots have been spontaneously fabricated on SiO2 by controlling the early stages of low-pressure chemical vapor deposition from pure silane. The tunneling current through Au/1 nm-SiO2/a single Si quantum dot/1 nm-SiO2/n+-Si(100) double-barrier structures has exhibited the clear current bump or negative conductance at 300 K with a peak current to valley ratio as high as 10. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Sphingomonas paucimobilis SYK-6 is able to grow on a wide variety of dimeric lignin compounds. These compounds are degraded via vanillate and syringate by a unique enzymatic system, composed of etherases, O demethylases, ring cleavage oxygenases and side chain cleaving enzymes. These unique and specific lignin modification enzymes are thought to be powerful tools for utilization of the most abundant aromatic biomass, lignin. Here, we focus on the genes and enzymes involved in β-aryl ether cleavage and biphenyl degradation. Two unique etherases are involved in the reductive cleavage of β-aryl ether. These two etherases have amino acid sequence similarity with the glutathione S-transferases, and use glutathione as a hydrogen donor. It was found that 5,5′-dehydrodivanillate, which is a typical lignin-related biphenyl structure, was transformed into 5-carboxyvanillate by the reaction sequence of O-demethylation, meta-ring cleavage, and hydrolysis, and the genes involved in the latter two reactions have been characterized. Vanillate and syringate are the most common intermediate metabolites in lignin catabolism. These compounds are initially O-demethylated and the resulting diol compounds, protocatechuate (PCA) and 3-O-methylgallate, respectively, are subjected to ring cleavage catalyzed by PCA 4,5-dioxygenase. The ring cleavage products generated are further degraded through the PCA 4,5-cleavage pathway. We have isolated and characterized genes for enzymes involved in this pathway. Disruption of a gene for 2-pyrone-4,6-dicarboxylate hydrolase (ligI) in this pathway suggested that an alternative route for 3-O-methylgallate degradation, in which ligI is not involved, would play a role in syringate catabolism. In this article, we describe the genetic and biochemical features of the S. paucimobilis SYK-6 genes involved in degradation of lignin-related compounds. A possible application of the SYK-6 lignin degradation system to produce a valuable chemical material is also described.

Notes: Abstract  Traces of uranium and thorium in barium(II), strontium(II) titanate ((Ba, Sr)TiO3) ferroelectric materials were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Samples were completely dissolved by a mixture of 1.4% H2O2 and 1.0 mol⋅l-1 HNO3. For a complete separation of the analytes from the matrix elements, a two step separation technique involving leaching and anion-exchange was applied. By the leaching step with HNO3 more than 90% of the matrix can be removed whereas the analytes completely remained in the solution. The anion-exchange step was carried out on a BIO⋅RAD AG1-X8 column with a mixture of 1.0 mol⋅l-1 HF and 0.5 mol⋅l-1 HNO3 as eluent. The content of uranium and thorium was subsequently measured by ICP-MS. The detection limits (D.L.) obtained were 0.043 ng g-1 and 0.035 ng g-1 for U and Th, respectively. The reproducibility was satisfactory with a relative standard deviation of less than 3% (at the 1 ng g-1 level, n=5). The matrix concentrations in the final solution were reduced to the sub-μg ml-1 level which is in the range of the detection limits of USN-ICP-AES (ultrasonic nebulization-ICP-atomic emission spectroscopy). The method was successfully applied to the determination of uranium and thorium in three synthetic (Ba, Sr)TiO3 samples spiked with the analytes at levels of 1, 5 and 10 ng g-1 and three (Ba, Sr)TiO3 ferroelectric samples containing sub-ng g-1 levels of the analytes.

Notes: Abstract Poly-N-acetyllactosamines provide backbone structures for functional modifications such as sialyl Lewis X. To understand how the biosynthesis of poly-N-acetyllactosamines is regulated, two branched oligosaccharides of the structure Galβ1,4GlcNAcβ1, 6(Galβ1,4GlcNAcβ1,2)-Manα1,6Manβ-octyl 1 and 2 were synthesized in which one of the terminal galactose units was selectively radiolabeled. Hexasaccharides 1 and 2 were assembled from the chemically synthesized pentasaccharide precursors GlcNAcβ1,6(Galβ1,4GlcNAcβ1,2)-Manα1,6Manβ-octyl3 and Galβ1,4GlcNAcβ1,6(GlcNAcβ1, 2) - Manα1,6 Manβ-octyl 4 respectively, through treatment with UDP-1-[3H]-Gal and β1,4 galactosyltransferase. Compounds 1 and 2 were subsequently incubated with UDP-GlcNAc and the UDP-GlcNAc: Galβ1-4Glc(NAc)β1,3-N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase (i-GlcNAc transferase) resulting in a partial conversion to a mixture of heptasaccharides which were purified by HPLC. The branch selectivity of the addition of N-acetylglucosamine to compounds 1 and 2 was then characterized by endo-β-galactosidase digestion of the heptasaccharides, followed by isolation of the resultant pentasaccharides on C18 reverse-phase silica cartridges. Comparison of the amount of radiolabel to a control reaction lacking endo-β-galactosidase indicated the favored site of GlcNAc addition to be the lower β1,2-branch over the β1,6-branch by a 3:1 ratio.

Notes: Abstract We present ab initio calculations of electric field gradients (EFGs) at impurity sites in ionic crystals TiO2, Al2O3 and CaCO3. The electronic structure was calculated self-consistently by the KKR method in the framework of the local spin density approximation of the density functional theory. The system with a single impurity was simulated by the super cell method. It was found that EFGs for the transition metal impurities (Sc, Nb, Cd and Ta) in TiO2 were well reproduced by the calculations if the charge state of them in TiO2 was taken into account. The present method was applied to the determination of the implantation sites of N and O nuclei in TiO2. The calculation of EFGs at a Si impurity in Al2O3 and at Ca site in CaCO3 were used to derive the quadrupole moments of 27Si and 39Ca from their quadrupole coupling constants.

Notes: Abstract The electric quadrupole interaction of 19O(Iπ=(5/2)+, T1/2=27.0 s) in TiO2 single crystal was studied in detail by means of the β-NQR to determine the electric quadrupole moments Q of short-lived β-emitting nuclei 19O and 13O(Iπ=(3/2)-, T1/2=8.6 ms). Two implantation sites were found for the implanted O nucleus and the quadrupole coupling constants of 19O at these sites were determined. We observed FT-NMR of the enriched stable isotope 17O in TiO2 and obtained the electric field gradient (EFG) at the oxygen substitutional site. With this knowledge, we have determined Q(13O)=11.0 ± 1.3 mb and Q(19O)=3.7 ± 0.4 mb. The present results are compared with the theoretical values calculated by the shell model code, OXBASH and by the Hartree–Fock calculation with the realistic potential.

Notes: Abstract The sign of the quadrupole coupling constant eqQ of 8B in ZrB2 is determined to be positive through the β-delayed α-ray anisotropy measurement combined with the spin manipulation technique by use of the β-NMR. According to the theoretical calculation of the electric field gradient in ZrB2, the sign of the quadrupole moment of 8B is deduced to be positive.

Notes: Abstract The degrees of nuclear spin polarization of 8,12B, 9C, 12N, 13O, 20,21F, 23Mg, 27Si and 39Ca produced in the high energy 12,13C, 16O, 22Ne, 24Mg, 28Si and 40Ca ions on Be collisions have been measured systematically, for the technical developments of the nuclear moment studies as well as the hyperfine interaction studies by means of β-NMR technique. The fragment momentum dependences were well reproduced by the simple kinematical model. Incident energy dependence and the mass dependence as well as the reaction angle dependences were qualitatively explained by the mixing of the near and far side collisions.

Notes: Abstract The spin manipulation technique by use of the β-NMR is further refined, based on the recent thorough studies of hyperfine interactions of 12B and 12N in Mg. By using this technique, the alignment correlation terms in the β-ray angular distribution of the A = 12 system are precisely measured, so that the axial charge is singled out to be y = 4.66 ± 0.06 (stat.) ± 0.13 (syst.) which shows clear mesonic enhancement over the impulse value.
