Notes: Structural analysis of the cross section of gold/Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) polymer film/gold sandwich structures was performed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the obtained results were complemented by electron transport investigations of the sandwich structures. The polymer film consisted of four to ten LB monolayers of a nonconducting polymer. TEM analysis of the sandwich cross section revealed a number of gold particles, 2–5 nm in size, formed during the fabrication process within the LB film close to the top electrode. Low temperature dc-transport measurements showed current-voltage (I-V) characteristics with equidistant steps that are not expected if the polymer film is thought to form a single laterally extended tunneling barrier between the metal electrodes. This feature can be understood, however, on the basis of the Coulomb blockade model applied to cluster-like metallic inclusions acting as an island separated from both Au electrodes by tunneling barriers. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The effect of Cu on the magnetic properties of slowly cooled Nd60−xFe20Al10Co10Cux (0≤x≤10) bulk amorphous alloys has been studied by room-temperature magnetic measurements. Ferromagnetic bulk amorphous Nd60Fe20Al10Co10 cylinders of 3 mm diameter and 50 mm in length with a coercivity of 298 kA m−1 were obtained by copper mold casting. The addition of 1 at. % Cu into the Nd60Fe20Al10Co10 alloy causes an increase in coercivity to 321 kA m−1. Further addition of Cu by replacing neodymium, however, results in an abrupt decrease in coercivity to 41 kA m−1 for alloys with x=10 due to the precipitation of a Fe-rich magnetically soft Nd(Fe, Co, Al)2 phase. The improvement of the hard magnetic properties by the addition of 1 at. % Cu for the cast Nd60Fe20Al10Co10 based bulk amorphous alloys may be attributed to an enhanced clustering of Nd–(Fe, Co) pairs in the amorphous alloys. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Description / Table of Contents: The use of free buccal mucosal grafts in the treatment of urethral strictures has become very popular. In 1996 and 1997 we harvested free buccal mucosal grafts up to 7 cm long and 4 cm wide from 12 patients who underwent urologic surgery for urethral strictures. In 2 patients the donor site was closed primarily by sutures. Four patients received Lyodura and another 4 patients received Syspurderm as temporary wound coverage. In 2 patients Ethisorp patches were used. Donor site pain was judged by the patients on a visual analogue scale during the first postoperative week. The 2 patients who received the Ethisorp patches complained of more intense pain, probably caused by the rigidity of the material. In all patients regeneration of the donor site mucosa was good. During the follow-up period of 4–18 months scar formation at the lower vestibulum was noticed as the only complication. Permanent limitation of mouth opening, stenosis of the parotid duct or hypesthesia did not occur.

Notes: Abstract. Production methods for carbon nanotubes are now well established and allow their synthesis on a scale of grams per day. For many potential applications of this unique material, its purification still remains a crucial problem. In this article various purification methods for single- and multi-wall carbon nanotubes are reviewed. These methods are compared in terms of their capacity, efficiency, and effects on the tubes. In addition, the use of Raman spectroscopy for monitoring the chromatographic purification of single-wall nanotubes is described.

Notes: Abstract. The pressure dependence of the high-energy Raman modes in single- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes was measured in the range 0–10 GPa. We found the pressure coefficient to be linear in both materials but 25% smaller in MWNT. Given that the curvature effects on vibrational properties of the rolled-up graphene sheets are small, we can explain this difference simply with elasticity theory.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Hypothermia has a considerable protective effect during brain ischemia. On the other hand small increases of brain temperature have a remarkable effect on the exacerbation of neurological damage following an ischemic event. Hyperthermia of the brain tissue after severe head injury is described. The effect of acutely increased intracranial pressure on cerebrovenous blood temperature is not described yet. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between temperature in the cerebrovenous compartment (Tcv) and changes of the CPP in an animal model of raised intracranial pressure. Methods: A thermocouple was inserted in the sagittal sinus in 9 pigs under general anesthesia. By stepwise inflating a supracerebral and infratentorial placed balloon catheter intracranial pressure (ICP) was increased and CPP concomitantly decreased. The central body temperature was measured simultaneously in the abdominal aorta (Ta) with a second thermocouple. Results: In our model th Tcv was lower than Ta at the beginning of the ICP increase. The mean difference between Ta and Tcv, (ΔTa-cv) was 0,86° C (±0,44) prior to ICP increase and 1,19° C (0,58) at the maximum ICP increase. Thus, ΔTav increased during CPP reduction. This relation was represented by an adjusted R(square) of r2=0.89 (p〈0,001). Conclusions: The CPP decrease, caused by an increasing ICP, results in changes of the cerebrovenous blood temperature. Interpreting the present results the experimental situation of a relative colder cerebral compartment in comparison to the central body temperature has to be considered. However, the results imply, that simultaneous temperature monitoring of the central body temperature and the cerebrovenpus blood temperature is an additional source of information about relative changes of the CBF.

Notes: Abstract Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the sensitivity of a newly applied transoesophageal ultrasonic Doppler sensor for detection of air with the traditional precordial ultrasonic Doppler sensor in clinical use. Methods: We studied 16 patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures in a sitting position. Two ultrasonic Doppler devices were compared as to their ability to detect venous air embolisms (VAE): transoesophageal (ODM II, co. Abbott) versus a precordial ultrasonic Doppler sensor (Parks Medical Electronics Inc.). After establishing general anaesthesia and endotracheal intubation, we applied an ultrasonic Doppler sensor to the right sternal border of the patient’s chest and inserted an ultrasonic Doppler probe into the oesophagus. With the patient in the sitting position, microparticularly d-galactose was injected to verify the efficacy of both ultrasonic Doppler devices. Results: Using ODM II by positioning the probe toward the azygos vein, a dosage of 1 ml microparticularly d-galactose was dedected in every patient. When adjusting the ODM II-probe on the right myocardial wall or using the precordial ultrasonic Doppler sensor, the administration of microparticularly d-galactose was detected by the devices in only 11 patients. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that a transoesophageal ultrasonic Doppler sensor (ODM II) is more efficient than the precordial ultrasonic Doppler sensor for monitoring patients who are at risk of VAE by sonification of the azygos vein.

Notes: Abstract. Recent developments in the application of scanning force microscopy in nanotube science are reviewed. The non-destructive character of this technique allows the structural characterisation of (chemically modified) single- and multi-wall nanotubes deposited on substrates for further investigations such as electrical transport measurements. Furthermore, SFM is now an established tool for manipulation of nanotubes, which allows position control and determination of elastic constants such as the Young’s modulus. Finally it is shown that very sharp and stable probes for scanning force microscopy can be made from nanotubes due to their excellent stability and aspect ratio.
