    Notes: Reaction-rate oscillations in CO oxidation over heterogeneous platinum thin-film catalysts were studied at atmospheric pressure where spatial coupling is due to gas-phase diffusion of reactant concentration gradients. The catalyst was perturbed locally by the introduction of CO directly above the surface, while the resulting spatiotemporal behavior was monitored using infrared imaging. The transient response of the system was studied in both the steady-state and oscillatory regimes, and comparisons are made between the observed behavior and predictions from models for the oscillations. Using these perturbations, global behavior was initiated using a localized effect. Similarities and differences between the induced oscillations and those occurring naturally are discussed, as are tests to vary the phase of the oscillatory cycle. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A two-dimensional clinical intravenous coronary angiography system, comprising a large-size view area produced by asymmetrical reflection from a silicon crystal using intense synchrotron radiation from a multipole wiggler and a two-dimensional detector with an image intensifier, has been completed. An advantage of the imaging system is that two-dimensional dynamic imaging of the cardiovascular system can be achieved due to its two-dimensional radiation field. This world-first two-dimensional system has been successfully adapted to clinical applications. Details of the imaging system are described in this paper.

    Notes: Endo-1,4-β-mannanase was purified to homogeneity from the culture supernatant of Bacillus subtilis KU-1 by ammonium sulfate precipitation, DEAE-Toyopearl, phenyl-Sepharose and FPLC Mono Q column chromatography by 810-fold with 39% yield. The molecular mass of the enzyme was estimated to be 39 kDa by SDS-PAGE and 40 kDa by gel filtration. It had a pI of 4.5 with maximum activity at pH 7.0 and 50–55°C. It was stable for 48 h between pH 4.5 and 9.0, and for 1 h up to 60°C. The enzyme activity was strongly inhibited by Hg2+, Ag2+, Cu2+, Mn2+, and Cr2+. The amino acid composition of the enzyme was in the order Asx〉Glx〉Leu〉Try〉Ser.

    Notes: Abstract We analyzed the natural course of fistula in ano (FIA) and/or perianal abscess (PAA) in 97 children (male: 90, female: 7) and recommend conservative management in infants. Nearly one-half of these children had no recurrent episodes, and 80% of the infants recovered spontaneously within their 1st year of life. A radical operation was required in only 6 children after 2 years of age. Two-thirds of the children with a PAA did not develop fistula. Of the children who developed FIA, 42% had no recurrence. Although the duration of FIA was relatively longer than that of PAA, 55% of the children were cured within 1 year. PAA and/or FIA in infants is likely to be a period-limited disorder that occurs mainly in infancy and spontaneously resolves within 1 year of life. Fistulotomy or fistulectomy should be avoided in infants.

    Notes: Abstract Esophageal hiatal hernias (EHH) are probably caused by congenital, traumatic, or iatrogenic factors, although the etiology remains unknown. EHHs may develop after abdominal wall closure for omphalocele or gastroschisis due to the increased intra-abdominal pressure, however, there have been few reports in the literature. We present a case of EHH developing after abdominal wall closure.

    Notes: Summary  Among 155 cases of hemifacial spasm (HFS), the authors found two cases of atypical HFS (1.3%) in which spasm started with the orbicularis oris and buccinator muscles, and gradually spread upward to involve the orbicularis occuli muscle, whereas the reverse process is usually seen in cases of typical HFS. The compression site in cases of atypical HFS is the posterior/rostral aspect of the facial nerve (FN), whereas it was the anterior/caudal aspect of the FN in all cases of typical HFS except for one. The meatal loop of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) compressed the FN when the vessel passed between the FN and the eighth cranial nerve (8th N). These findings suggest that the topographical organization in the FN in the cerebellopontine cistern may be reversed to a peripheral distribution: the fibres on the posterior/rostral side of the FN innervate the lower part of the facial muscles, and those in the anterior/caudal side of the nerve innervate the upper part of the facial muscles. When examining patients with HFS, we must very carefully determine whether patients have typical or atypical HFS, to determine whether blood vessels (usually the meatal loop of the AICA) between the FN and the 8th N as well as at the root exit zone of the FN are to be decompressed.

    Notes: Summary  Forty-three surgical cases were retrospectively analyzed to establish diagnostic criteria and operative indications for vertigo and tinnitus due to neurovascular compression (NVC) of the eighth cranial nerve (8th N). Many NVC syndromes were mistakenly diagnosed as Ménière's disease or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. NVC was confirmed in 31 of the 43 patients. Neurovascular decompression (NVD) resulted in complete recovery or marked improvement of subjective symptoms in all 19 cases with vertigo (100%), and in 19 of 29 patients with tinnitus (65.5%). Multiple factor analysis revealed that abnormal caloric responses have high diagnostic value for vertigo due to NVC. Vertigo due to NVC is of short duration (a few sec to a few min.) in the early phase of the disease, which becomes longer and hearing becomes impaired as the history of NVC lengthens. Low pitch pulsatile and high pitch continuous tinnitus are probably due to NVC and are cured by NVD if hearing is still preserved. Tinnitus associated with hemifacial spasm is strongly indicative of NVD. Decompression of the 8th N should be performed in the early phase of disease, since cochlear and vestibular functions are irreversibly impaired if NVC continues for a long period of time.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation of development of the collateral circulation to the liver during hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) with the presence of hepatic tumours adjacent to the hepatic surface, and with pretreatment occlusion of aberrant hepatic arteries. In 102 patients with unresectable malignant hepatic tumours treated with HAIC using an implantable port system, development of collaterals to the liver was assessed with CT arteriography using the implantable port and pre- and postoperative angiography. Aberrant hepatic arteries, if present, were occluded prior to treatment for hepatic arterial redistribution. Collaterals to the liver were seen in 29 patients, who had 35 areas with collateral perfusion: 22 areas were in the right posterosuperior area, 6 in the left peripheral area and 7 in the right or left lobar area. Collaterals were revealed more frequently in patients with hepatic tumours adjacent to the hepatic surface than in those without hepatic tumours in peripheral areas in the liver (p 〈 0.0001). In addition, collaterals developed more frequently in patients with an aberrant hepatic arterial anatomy compared with those with conventional anatomy (p = 0.0007). Our results indicated that patients with hepatic tumours adjacent to the hepatic surface and with pretreatment occlusion of aberrant hepatic arteries had the potential to develop collaterals to the liver during HAIC.

    Notes: Summary.  The genome of the broad bean necrosis virus Oita-isolate (BBNV-O) [RNA1 (6.0 kb), RNA2 (2.8 kb) and RNA3 (2.4 kb)] was cloned and sequenced. Computer analysis indicates that methyltransferase, helicase and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) motifs are present in RNA1. The viral capsid protein (CP) cistron is located at the 5′ terminal end of RNA2 and the Mr of CP (20 K) is close to that determined by SDS-PAGE analysis. An ochre codon (UAA) in the CP cistron is thought to be partially suppressed to produce a large readthrough protein. RNA3 possesses typical motifs of triple gene block proteins, which are also reported in several other plant viruses. The furovirus genome organization and phylogenetic analysis using RdRp and CP amino acid sequences suggest that BBNV is closely related to potato mop-top virus (PMTV), but is relatively distantly related to other furoviruses. The data also suggest that the genus Furovirus should be separated into several genera: the prototypical genus Furovirus, which excludes the following viruses: the PMTV group including BBNV; the beet necro- tic yellow vein virus (BNYVV) group; and the peanut clump virus (PCV) group.
