Notes: We have grown Li-doped ZnO films on silicon (100) using the rf planar magnetron sputtering method. The surface charges induced piezoelectrically by defect and by polarization can be observed by electric force microscopy. The Li-doped ZnO films have been proven to be ferroelectric. The Raman spectra of ZnO and Li-doped ZnO films have been measured. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The influence of flux on the growth of ripples on Si(111) under bombardment of oblique, 1 keV O2+ beams was investigated. We found that a low flux leads to a significantly higher ripple growth rate per ion than a high flux. This effect is attributed to a reduction in the viscous flow of the amorphized material. At low fluxes, the viscous flow is reduced because there is more thermal annealing of the radiation damage. Current models of surface roughening remain valid if the flux dependence of the viscous flow is taken into account. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Generations of efficient blue light at 447 nm and red light at 671 nm were achieved by frequency doubling and tripling of a diode-pumped, Q-switched 1342 nm Nd:YVO4 laser with a periodically poled LiTaO3 (PPLT). The blue light at 447 nm was generated by sum-frequency mixing of the fundamental at 1342 nm with the generated second harmonic at 671 nm. The first-order and third-order reciprocals of the PPLT compensated the phase mismatches of second-harmonic and sum-frequency processes, respectively, making them quasiphase matched. The resulting averaged blue light power of 51 mW and red light power of 207 mW under the averaged fundamental power of 500 mW indicate that the PPLT may be used to construct an all-solid-state blue and red dual wavelength laser. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Structural planar defects in the SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) films with 10 mol % excess Bi grown in Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates by metalorganic deposition have been observed by high-resolution electron microscopy. It was found that these stacking defects were planar defects with extra Bi–O planes normal to the c axis. These structural defects are expected to effectively improve the ferroelectric response and fatigue-resistance characteristics of SBT films because of the extra Bi–O planes having higher strucutral flexibility and alleviating the mechanical stresses and strains as well as injected-charge problems. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A phase-field model for predicting the coherent microstructure evolution in constrained thin films is developed. It employs an analytical elastic solution derived for a constrained film with arbitrary eigenstrain distributions. The domain structure evolution during a cubic→tetragonal proper ferroelectric phase transition is studied. It is shown that the model is able to simultaneously predict the effects of substrate constraint and temperature on the volume fractions of domain variants, domain-wall orientations, domain shapes, and their temporal evolution. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: With Bi3TiNbO9 (BTN) ferroelectric samples, in situ electrical-field-induced growth of ferroelectric thin films was demonstrated to control the films' microstructure and manipulate their ferroelectric properties. BTN films on Ti/SiO2/Si substrates were grown at a relatively low temperature (650 °C) with a biased electrical field during pulsed-laser deposition. The (001) orientation of the films, which makes no contribution to their polarization, was effectively reduced by the in situ electrical field of strength of 70 V/cm. This results in a large increase of remnant polarization from 1.1 to 6.2 μC/cm2, and reduction of the coercive field from 70 to 50 kV/cm, comparing the films grown freely under the same condition. Furthermore, the films showed an excellent fatigue-free property of up to 1010 switching cycles. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The administration of indometacin to rats increases intestinal permeability and induces inflammatory pathology of the small bowel. This represents a potential model for Crohn’s disease.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aims:To analyse the pathogenic role of T cells, tumour necrosis factor and bacterial flora in indometacin-induced changes in small bowel permeability and inflammation.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:Rats were given indometacin, 13 mg/kg, on day 1 and day 2. The effects of antibiotic (metronidazole, aztreonam and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid), anti- tumour necrosis factor and interleukin-10 therapy were evaluated. The parameters used were weight change, serum haemoglobin, chromium-51 ethylenediaminetetra-acetate permeability and macro-and microscopic score on day 5. Results in conventionally harboured rats were compared with those in T-cell-free rats. Additional in vitro experiments were carried out to test the effect of metronidazole on tumour necrosis factor production.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:Indometacin administration resulted in small bowel ulcers and inflammation, independently of T cells. Metronidazole was more potent than amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and anti-tumour necrosis factor in improving the indometacin-induced small bowel inflammation. Only part of the efficacy was through improvement of increased intestinal permeability. Aztreonam and interleukin-10 had no effect. Metronidazole also suppressed in vitro lipopolysaccharide-induced tumour necrosis factor production, suggesting a therapeutic effect of this drug through the inhibition of tumour necrosis factor.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:These data implicate anaerobic bacteria and tumour necrosis factor production, but not T cells, as essential elements of the pathogenesis of indometacin-induced small bowel inflammation. Tumour necrosis factor is also involved in the change in intestinal permeability. Metronidazole was the most efficacious drug in this model, probably because it suppressed anaerobic bacteria and directly inhibited tumour necrosis factor production.

Notes: In order to develop genie male-sterile lines with a blue seed marker, male-sterile plants, controlled by a dominant nuclear gene Ms2, were used as female parents against a 4E disomic addition line ‘Xiaoyan Lanli’(2n= 44, AABBDD+4EII) as the male parent to produce monosomic addition lines with blue seed. Male-sterile plants from the monosomic addition lines were pollinated with durum wheat for several generations and in 1989 a male-sterile line with the blue grain gene and the male-sterile gene Ms2 on the same additional chromosome was detected and named line 89-2343. Using this line, the blue seed marker was successfully added to a short male-sterile line containing Ms2 and Rht10. The segregation ratios of male sterility and seed colour as well as the chromosome figurations of different plants indicated that the blue grain genes, Ms2 and Rht10 were located on the same additional chromosome. Cytological analysis showed that the blue marker male-sterile lines in durum wheat and common wheat were monosomic with an additional chromosome 4E. The inheritance ratio for blue seed male-sterile plants and white seed male-fertile plants was 19.7% and 80.3%, respectively, in common wheat. The potential for using blue marker sterile lines in population improvement and hybrid production is discussed.

Notes: Abstract: We propose a method to simulate a-Si and a-Si:H using an ab initio approach based on the Harris functional and thermally-amorphisized periodically-continued cells with at least 64 atoms. Hydrogen incorporation was achieved via diffusive addition. In preparing samples that may simulate the distributions of atoms in the amorphous materials, simulated annealing calculations were carried out from given starting conditions using short and long time steps. The different time-steps led to samples having distinctly different topological disorder. The radial distribution functions (partial and total) of the resulting samples were calculated and compared with measured distributions; the agreement is very good. These comparisons allowed some tentative conclusions to be made as regards the kind of disorder prevailing in the real samples. In addition, we studied the effect of the topological disorder on the electronic densities of states of the samples; the passivating effect of hydrogen can be observed.

Notes: Abstract. A differential cluster variation method (DCVM) is proposed for analysis of spinoidal decomposition in alloys. In this method, lattice symmetry operations in the presence of an infinitesimal composition gradient are utilized to deduce the connection equations for the correlation functions and to reduce the number of independent variables in the cluster variation analysis. Application of the method is made to calculate the gradient energy coefficient in the Cahn-Hilliard free energy function and the fastest growing wavelength for spinodal decomposition in Al-Li alloys. It is shown that the gradient coefficient of congruently ordered Al-Li alloys is much larger than that of the disordered system. In such an alloy system, the calculated fastest growing wavelength is approximately 10 nm, which is an order of magnitude larger than the experimentally observed domain size. This may provide a theoretical explanation why spinodal decomposition after a congruent ordering is dominated by the antiphase boundaries.
